This exclusive video shows two Good Samaritans on the roof, trying to save their neighbors from a raging house fire. Freddie simple is one of those impede samaritans. If youre sleeping and you have somebody crying for help, what are you going to do . Freddie simple told us he ryed to save his neighbors. He woke up to this raging fire nextdoor. A family inside was trapped, so he grabbed a lard dder. I put the hook ladder there and i tried to climb up there and she was saying something that didnt make no sense to me, because she was so much in a panicky state. Reporter freddie and to reach one woman, but they couldnt reach octavia kennard. I couldnt push my head in the window because the smoke was so strong. Reporter octavia and her husband were killed. Freddie suffered smoke inhalation from his rescue attempt. It feels like a knife going in your chest. For hours i was going through that pain this morning. Reporter investigators say the power sparked from a power strip in the dining room. The home had no working smoke detectors. The fdny and the red cross came to the scene to hand out free smoke detectors and batteries to people in the neighborhood. And after seeing this tragedy up close, neighbors are taking the message to heart. I always have the battery checked, make sure theyre working properly. Reporter and tomorrow morning, we learned that Brooklyn Bureau president eric adams and the fdny will continue some outreach. Theyre going to hold a fire safety session for people here in the neighborhood and continue to hand out smoke detectors. Theyre hoping to prevent tragedies from like this happening again.
