folks, we got to wake up. we cannot elect somebody that doesn't know how toceo the job. >> this is the man that was a managing general partner at lehman brothers when it went dok wn the tubes. and h said oh, i'm never going to attack. but then his poll numbers tanked. that's why he is on the end. >> then the two candidates from florida, governor jeb bush and marco bio. bush questioned rubio's commitment to his current senate seat. >> what it is, a french workweek? you get three days where you have to show up? >> someone has convinced you that attacking me is going to help you. >> former hewlett-packard chief carly fiorina was asked about her leadership record and the company's decline under her tenure. >> i had to make some tough calls in some tough times. i think people are actually looking for that in washington now. and yes, i was fired over a disagreement in the boardroom. >> reporter: none of the questions up until this point were up to senator ted cruz's liking, and he led the moderators know. >> ben carson, can you do math? marco rubio, why don't you resign. jeb bush, why have your numbers fallen. how about talking about the substantive issues people care about. >> reporter: the moderators then asked about senator rubio's finance. >> you accidentally intermingled campaign money with your personal money. you faced foreclosure on a second home that you bought. >> reporter: and if he would be able to lead the american economy. >> i didn't inherit any money. my dad was a bartender. my mother was a maid. they worked hard to provide us a chance at a better life. i'm not worried about my finances. i'm worried about the finance of everyday americans. >> reporter: and he didn't really give an answer there. governor chr chrivtie noticeably mum tonight. the next debate amongst republicans is in november. and keep in mind we're now less than 100 days out from the iowa caucus. things are sure to heat up even more. in the newsro, iar ray villeda. chuck, back to you. >> all right, thank you. republicans are poised to elect wisconsin congressman paul ryan as our next house speaker. ryan was nominated today. the official vote is scheduled for tomorrow. the nine-term congressman spoke earlier, saying that his party has lost its vision in the past few years. despite that harsh assessment, ryan praised john boehner as serving as speaker for his abrupt resignation last month. a military blimp is finally back on solid ground tonight after it broke free from its tetter in maryland, then traveled more than 100 miles. randy gyllenhaal from our sister station in philadelphia has the latest from anthony township, pennsylvania. >> it's going down. >> reporter: it descended down from the clouds above, seemingly out of nowhere. the white giant military blimp on the loose over rural pennsylvania. >> i look up into the sky, and i see this white thing that looked like a goodyear blimp at first. proceeded to follow it around my house, watching it pull down the power lines and hearing the loud zapping noise and things like that. >> reporter: witnesses watched the blimp fly over homes, hovering close to the ground, its long metal tether flying across fields, knocking down power lines. finally it crashed into woods into two pieces near the town of muncie, just west of bloomsberg, pa. >> we saw the trees. >> what did you see? >> it look likes a big white tarp. >> wow. this is the reason our power is out. >> reporter: local police and the national guard secured the scene around the crash site. the blimp is an expensive and secretive piece of military hardware used for surveillance along the eastern seaboard. the public is being asked to stay away from this crash site. >> the next step is wait for the military to arrivet it's their piece of equipment. and they will take care of the retrieval and recovery of the blimp itself. >> reporter: the blimp began its journey more than 100 miles away. it's now deflated on the woodeutn whilltop and rngidents can't fathom the fact that it ended up here. >> this is crazy. i mean, we're a small town. 365 days of the year. and today we have the spotlight from the nation. >> reporter: it is unclear exactly how long this cleanup and removal will take. that is all going to be handled by the military. and since this is such a cretive piece of technology, that removal process will be handled with a lot of care. in montour county, randy gyllenhaal, nbc news. well, the mets came up short in game two of the world series. they lost to the kansas city royals 7-1 tonight. >> john chandler is on the upper east side where mets fans are still optimistic. john? >> reporter: yes, they are, even though johnny cueto and the royals took control tonight of this series with a 7-1 win by taking control of the mets' bats. a much different feeling from last night in that 14-inning marathon. this one, this one was over degrom struggled. remember, tara collins hinted that he could be fatigued going into the world series. even with that mets fans still holding out hope though their team is now in a 2-0 hole. mets fans were back at it for game two. like any good ace, working on short rest. >> i've been nervous all day at work. i can't concentrate. i'm not oing anything. >> i'm a little tired. but this comes around once every 20 years. so you got to be upcfor it. >> reporter: steve eckert wouldn't have missed it. he and his daughter katy have watched the entire play-offs at bar coastal, from this same table. >> the dodgers series, we had a good outcome. now we're here for the world series. we'll have the same outcome. >> he has always inspired us to be mets fans and told us stories where he would be at game six of the 1986 world series. you know what? i'm going -- i'm going to share the same passion. >> reporter: and in game two that passion was tested. the royals got to jake degrom for four runs. >> they're a team that can be very frustrating at times. but hen they're good, they're really good. and that team is special. long time. >> reporter: and that's why october, even as the odds turn against them. >> have i confidence. they're going to win in five. >> jake degrom win in five? they lost game one. >> i know. they're going to win in five. >> that means they're going to sweep the rest. >> reporter: obviously that gentleman's math is adjusted now after the loss. he tells me before he left here that they're still going to sweep the rest of the four games that they have to win. but the mets are in an 0-2 hole to the kansas city royals team. i'll leave you on this note. >> one of our brothers died in the line of duty. he deserved somebody to stand out there. >> reporter: back inside grieving family members were presented with the flag. officer holder died trying to catch an armed man with a long criminal history. mayor de blasio praised holder's heroism and called for tougher gun laws. >> but we have changes to make. so we don't lose more good men and women like officer holder. >> reporter: in jamaica, queens, michael george, news 4, new york. coming up on news 4 new york, the fallout from a video gone viral. a south carolina officer caught on video slamming a student, learns his fate. and the federal investigation now under way. plus a manhattan high school student dies after a collision on the soccer field. tonight his family speaks to news 4. and the accidental lottery winner. how a clerk's mistake led to one in new jersey, authorities say they have taken down a major international luxury car ring. from benteys to bmws, some of the vehicles recovered worth more than $4 million. 21 people are charged tonight with scouting out wealthy establishments and homes. in som cases they would carjack their victims. in others they would take advantage of owners who left their cars running. the cars were then resold in west africa for two to three times the street value. a new york city marching band leader is accused of duct taping a 9-year-old student's and his excuse for doing it has some parents outraged. 39-year-old kenyot hughes said he wanted to teach student a elesson about slavery. hughes pleaded not guilty to assault and child endangerment charges. a judge released hughes because he has no criminal history, but asked him to stay away from the 9-year-old victim. the south carolina sheriff's deputy caught on camera slamming the studentto the floor has been fi fired. the viral video lit up social media. it hows deputy sheriff and school resource officer ben fields flipping a teenaged student over in her desk, and then dragging her across the classroom. fields told police that the student was being disruptive and refused to leave the classroom. his boss says the response was excessive. the boss is investigating whether the student's civil rights were violated. a community is mourning the loss of a new york city h gh school student. 16-year-old thomas jakelich was at a sophomore at loyola school. against the un school when he collided with another player. his family was told it wasn't a hard hit, but he looked pale and had pain in his side. they took him to the hospital where he died from internal bleeding. family and friends say students have been sharing stories about how thomas helped them, include one clasheate who just moved into the area. >> he was eating lunch by himself, and thomas came up and said why don't you have lunch with me. >> he alwa spent the time to make sure that all the children around him were -- were included. >> those who knew thomas say he was a phenomenal soccer player with college scholarship potential. his family says there is no one to blame for his death. they say it was just a tragic accident. for all of you people out there who hate getting candy crush invites on face ok, this one is for you. mark zuckerberg is making it his mission to put a stop to those invitations. the issue was brought up during a town hall meeting today in delhi. the facebook founder said shutting down the pesky invites was never a priority for the company this the past, but it will be now. am i the only one who has never played that game? >> i haven't either. >> you haven't either? >> so there are three of us. >> patiently it's addictive, though. >> we may be the wrong age group. >> no, i see people all the time on the trains. just playing. it doesn't matter how old they are. >> it's for everybody. all right. so we're tracking rain out there. and even some thunderstorms out there tonight. maybe you heard some thunder, saw some lightning in your neighborhood. we 're still not quite done with all the rain just yet. but in a matter of hours, it will be moving on. but right now, still coming down in spots. this is a live view on rockefeller plaza. the rain in the city is on the light side right now. but there are some heavier showers around and some downpours here and there. and look at this temperature. 68. i do believe this is the high temperature for the day. because it's been rising steady since about 5:00 or 6:00 this evening. that's because a warmer air mass moving in behind the warm front that came earlier today with all the rain. so until midnight, the coastal flood advisory still in effect. middlesex, monmouth and ocean counties for high tide cycle. after that things should be fine. this is for minor flooding. wind gusts to 50 miles an hour. still likely over western ulster county until midnight. the advisory remains in effect there. although we've een some wind gusts almost as high in other spots already. this flood advisory is from the rain. not from the coastal flooding, from orange county down to union county. you've had some very heavy rain come through. look at the rainfall totals from new jersey today. almost 2 inches in summerville. some spots have had close to 3. you'll end up with that by the time this is over. central park with over an inch. newark with 1.3 inches. across northern sections, 1.82 in white plains and almost an inch in monticello in terms of the rain. long island not quite as much. but you're going see some heavier rain overnight that may add up to an inch or more. temperatures right now are generally in the 60s across long island, from middle village all the way out to the hamptons. close to 70, and 70-degree temperatures on the map too. long branch, bridgewater very mild out there. 71 in poughkeepsie. winds are gusting up around 30 miles per hour in spots like in white plains. so gusty winds still an issue across the area until tomorrow morning. and the rain, of course. now this heavy batch moving through west chester county right now and back to the west we see those thunderstorms up towards the catskills, and still some more rain waiting this the wings to come through later on tonight. still some drenching thunderstorms. by the time we get to tomorrow morning's commute, though, most of that should be moving east of the city. and a warm breeze kicks in. and we'll see temperatures in s. during the day tomorrow, it clears out. we'll have the sun. cooler temperatures on friday. going into the weekend it does cool down, but it's nice and dry marathon. and tomorrow morning on today in new york, we'll have the latest through the area. >> at least the weather is going to shape up. >> it's going to be great for that, yeah. >> maybe good for the mets game in three. >> let's hope so. bruc is live in kansas city right now with another world series loss from the mets tonight. >> sibila, one night after a world series game for the ages, the mets and royals played a one-sided affair. coming up in sports, the royals take an early stranglehold on the fall classic. we'll tell you all about it in a few minutes, live from kansas the centers for medicare recently asked patients to rate the quality of over 3,500 hospitals. t fewer than 10% received 5 stars. r among them was cancer treatment centers of america in philadelphia. a store clerk's mistake led to a $380,000 bonanza for one customer. >> that customer was named pat tucker. he walked into a 7-eleven store in california wanting to playu the mega millionn, but the clerk accidentally pressed the wrong button, the one for the $2 pobowerball ticket instead. the order couldn't be canceled, so tucker reluctantly took that powerball ticket. while he wasn't really happy then, he is certainly happy now. >> a mega million. and he say i can't cancel now. take it. so he take it. and he won. >> the powerball ticket didn't match all five numbers. >> but missed the powerball number. ticker says the extra cash from that generous win will go toward renovating his house. hopefully the clerk gets a little something too. >> 380,000 bucks for that ticket. not too bad a mistake. >> not bad. >> we'll be right back with the verizon fios sports desk is brought to you by verizon fios. leave slow internet behind. get fios. >> back to kansas city and bruce beck where the mets are down two games in the world series. but they aren't out of it. bruce? >> no, they're not, chuck. but we went from an epic game to a blowout here in kansas city. the mets try to get things going, but jacob degrom and his teammates were outplayed and outclassed in game two of the world series. at kauffman stadium. let's take a look at the highlights. with no score in the top of the fourth, and two men on base, lucas duda singles to left, and daniel murphy races home with the first run of the ball game. the royals erupted in the fifth off jacob de orom. they score four runs highlighted by this two-run single off the bat of eric hosmer. kansas city pounded out five hits in the inning to send degrom to the showers. the mets hitters were in a funk all night. johnny cueto had something to do with it. he dazzled the amazins, tossing a complete game. the right-hander allowed just one run and two hits. the royals hold serve impressively and take a 2-0 lead in the best of seven game world series, 7-1 the final. here is manager terry collins. >> we our starting pitching. when they struggle, we're going to struggle. that's what happened. can sit here and it's easy to make excuses that it's the work load, it's the days off, it's the youth, you know on the big stage. i'm not going to say. look, the royals have a good team. we got to make better pitching and we got to play better. >> in the nba, it was opening night for the locals. let's start with the knicks in milwaukee. and it was good effort. newcomer derrick williams stole the show. the former number two pick of n the draft had a game-high 24 off the bench. and then it was christoph porzingis siding. the rookie who got the starting nod poured in 16. return from knee surgery as the knicks get off on a winning note, 122-97 the final. the nets host the bulls in brooklyn and chicago ran roughshod over the home team in the third quarter, breaking the game wide open. lionel holland's reaction says it all. the nets open the season with a dud as the bulls roll, 115-100. well, one day after rejoining the giants, jason pierre-paul was back on the practice field for big blue. the the defensive end was back for the first time since his fireworks mishap on july 4th. jpp worked out off to the side during the team portion of practice. he won't play this sunday in new orleans, but he could travel withy he team to the big easy. so the royals hold serve. but the mets are back home at city field for game three on friday. billy joel will sing the national anthem, and the mets and their fans should be in a new york state of mind. chuck and sibila, i know the mets are down 2-zip, but there is still hope. back to you. >> always hope, bruce. thanks. behave for uncle pete.
