republican side. we are waiting on him to make a statement tonight. good evening, i' m tom griffith. shelley: i' m shelley walcott. shelley: here are the latest republican numbers from iowa. ted cruz is the winner at 28% with nine precincts reporting in. marco rubio has 23% and in carson is at 9%. they are followed by rand paul, jeb bush, john kasich and carly fiorina. mike huckabee, chris christie, rick santorum and jim gilmore are at the bottom. tom cole it for the democrats with 93% of the precincts reporting, hillary clinton and bernie sanders are within just a few votes of each other. both hovering in at 50% apiece. shelley: wmur political director josh mcelveen has been reporting from iowa since saturday and joins us now live. josh: there' s no shortage of drama in iowa tonight. caucus-goers turned out in record numbers. it was thought to benefit both bernie sanders and donald trump. bernie sanders is given -- giving hillary clinton everything she can handle, but it' s ted cruz and not donald trump as the choice of iowans tonight. the reality is that this point, donald trump is in danger of finishing in third place here in iowa which would be a disaster for his campaign, behind marco rubio. that would be a big victory for him. they both spoke to their supporters not long ago. text this is the moment they said would never happen. >> we are leaving tonight and tomorrow afternoon we will be in new hampshire and that will be something special. it' s going to be a great week and were going to be appeared next week and i think we will be we will go on to get the republican nomination and we will go on to easily beat hillary or bernie or whoever they throw up there. josh: a lot of candidates on their way to new hampshire tonight. a very tight race on the democratic side, a virtual tie between bernie sanders and hillary clinton. for bernie sanders, if he wins tonight, then heads into new hampshire after winning iowa suddenly the complexion of the race begins to change and it becomes very interesting. still a large hill for bernie sanders to climb but it definitely will make the race very interesting to watch. it could be a late night for both those candidates. malley and mike huckabee have said that they have suspended their on to new hampshire. ted cruz wins the republican i will caucuses and the democratic call. out there. outside of the front runners, did anyone else outperform or underperform tonight? josh: you could say that ben carson did pretty well, but he is another nonestablishment pick . he was expected to finish somewhere near the bottom of the pack and he is in fourth place. for tonight, a pretty good performance for ben carson. shelley: joining us to take a closer look at tonight' s results, political analyst scott ted cruz the big winner tonight, but let' s talk about donald trump. a lot of his campaign was based on the premise that he would bring home the big win. he did not win tonight. scott: does he have to organization to pull off a big victory in iowa? it' s a bit of a republican reset button for new hampshire. shelley: what does it mean for hampshire? scott: remember the last two i will caucus winners, huckabee and rick santorum could not parlay that into a victory here in new hampshire. it doesn' t necessarily mean crews will do well here. shelley: and a big night for marco rubio. >> he is the establishment pick among the four republicans running. he' s had a very good night and will make a lot of headlines. malley is out along with huckabee tonight. let' s talk about hillary clinton, still too close to call in that race. what does it mean in iowa? scott: they split the state in half and they are still at the starting gate, if you will. new hampshire gets too may be redefined the race. bernie sanders has the lead in the polls right now so we will see what happens. in south carolina, hillary clinton is very strong and not expected to lose their a matter what. shelley: scott spradling, we really appreciate it. it remains to be seen what happens in the general election, but in the last 4 decades, iowa hasn' t had a strong track record picking presidents. only 3 caucus winners have gone on to win the white house. jimmy carter in 1976, george w bush in 2000, and barack obama in 2008. tom: tonight the focus is already shifting to the granite state as a trio of republican candidates get a head start on 9. jeb bush, chris christie and , john kasich are all here to stay for the next 8 days. they were here today as well. wmur political reporter adam sexton joins us now with a wrap up of the day on the first in the nation campaign trail. adam: as former senator judd gregg said tonight in manchester s time to pick presidents. and the candidates here morning and caps off the day in hampton. while bernie sanders is holding two rallies keene in the afternoon, claremont at night. and like groundhog day the candidates will get up and do it again, day prerecorded political messages for granite stater' s who are on the national do not call list. it also applies to calls initiated by live callers. the attorney general' s office is reviewing a complaint against the john kasich campaign by an amherst man who is on the do not call list. this week in the republican candidates will meet on stage one last time before the primary. wmur and abc s mike cronin was there. from concord. mike bobcat hunting was outlawed : in new hampshire more than 20 years ago because the animals were nearly wiped out. but now the state says the population has rebounded. a state plan to establish a bobcat hunting and trapping season in new hampshire brought strong emotions to conquer. >> stop hunting for cats. mike: hundreds of people went to the statehouse monday night to voice their opinions on fish and game' s proposal to issue 50 bobcat permits through a lottery process. bobcat hunting hasn' t been legal in the granite state since 1989. opponents of the plan call it inhumane. >> they do not deserve to be trapped, set there for days, no shelter, no water, no food, and have other animals attacking them because they are vulnerable. >> i don' t think the time is we are premature in our efforts to try and manage a population that is just getting back on its feet. mike: supporters say there are enough bobcats to support a limited hunt. they also argue that neighboring states have bobcat seasons. >> we hope that you pass this so we can start taking cats and quickly show the public that there' s a lot more cats out there than they realize. >> we, as sportsmen, feel you have an obligation to vote yes, in favor of having a bobcat season. a vote no would be a vote against the very principles that died for. mike: if approved the proposal would with a woman. in one acquired by tmz sports, hernandez says he has a t.v. in his cell, watches every game, and is still a patriots fan. he wrote that he will love tom brady to death, and called rob
