If this was the strongest storm on record, why didnt it cause widespread wind damage and so em a im rolling back the clock and you can see where the eye of the storm is as it kind of rolled on shore and thats where it made landfall, not only why it weakened so quickly, but the bigger question, why it didnt do much damage. It moved into an area that wasnt populated and just like a skater, you know, a figure skater pulls her or his arms in to spin around quicker, the actual scope of the hurricane winds were small, indicated by that very small area there. As a result, once the storm moved over land, it lost all of its energy and kind of spun out spinning down. So, even though the wind now and the rain covers a much larger area into texas, that windfield is significantly weakened. By the way, that wind and rain field comes here for later on in the week. There are two reports out on New Hampshire economy saying job and the country and also a b welcome to New Hampshires business. Im fred kocher. One of the pillars of the economy are jobs. Hampshire is lagging in the growth of jobs. Were going to talk about that with my two guests who wrote the reports. Dennis, welcome from the center for Public Policy in New Hampshire. He is the senior economist there. Nice to have you. Good morning. And charlie arling house, good to have you. Great to be here. You two guys agree there is a lag . I think we do, yeah. Even though your reports phrase it a little differently. Charlie, you say were lagging behind massachusetts and thats different than in the past when New Hampshire really has led the region of new england in economic recovery from a recession. So, just whats your report really say . Our thought has always been that New Hampshire is an economic engine and boston is sort of this difficult backwater and thats reversed itself. When we found out we were one of the ten worst states in the country in job growth postrecession we decided to compare ourselves to massachusetts and massachusetts is growing a lot faster than we are, post recession. If we had matched their growth which is almost the rate of ours wed have 27,000 more jobs than we do. We use it as a jumping off point, is New Hampshire as competitive as it used to be and i think the answer is no. Dennis, your report came out and you and the new england economic partnership, which our viewers, it tracks all of the economies in the six states, you were slightly bullish. Youre saying that, yes, theres a lag and 2016 is going to be a good year. First of all, i dont agree with a lot of the things that charlie said we have lagged behind massachusetts. I think a lot of the reasons for that are the mix of jobs and industries that we have here in New Hampshire relative to massachusetts. A lot of the recovery came in in health care. And massachusetts is a higher percentage of jobs in those sectors than New Hampshire does. I think Going Forward though, year. 2016. I think that New Hampshire is going to do very well in 2016. I think its going to do massachusetts. The massachusetts model manager has a slightly lower growth rate than i do for New Hampshire. And next year. And i think that theres a couple of reasons for that that i think are important. One is this reduction in Energy Prices that weve seen over the last couple of years has been a big boon, especially for New Hampshire. And when gasoline prices dropped by a dollar a gallon. That puts 700 million into the back pockets of businesses and New Hampshire and thats a big boost. And a lot of the recovery came from the Financial Services industry and we know what happened to the Financial Services industry this year, especially in august. So the outlook for massachusetts, i dont think, in the next year or so, was not quite as positive as it is New Hampshire. You may catch up . In your report, i think you said, youre losing our competitive advantage. Dos that have something to do with it . We used to be seen as strongly competitive in a lot of different areas. I think there are a lot of areas where were not. One is taxes which gets a lot of attention, one that gets lots of attention, the highest in the country massachusetts are, too, but competing with tennessee and north carolina. We pay 50 above the National Average for our energy costs. And thats businesses and individuals of 500 Million Dollars a year every year. We have thousands of people day. Yeah, we have about 90,000 people in New Hampshire, residents, that are paying a yeah. So that means theyre paying income on jobs they have in massachusetts, its about one force. And the massachusetts minimum january. Ours is 7. 25, thats going to stay that way. How does that factor into this . I think there are fewer of the compute commuters are minimum wage jobs. The real commute and then the 16, 17 of the work force who leaves the state mostly to massachusetts is from other reasons. We did a calculation a few days ago, looking at the Educational Attainment of people, of the adults in New Hampshire and 47 of the adults in New Hampshire have an Associates Degree or better. If you look at the jobs in New Hampshire that require that kind of education, its only about 27 , so, that to me could mean that you have highly educated advantage of our quality of massachusetts. In ten seconds, how do we get job growth back to a normal level . Cut energy costs, cut taxes and more aggressively recruit companies. Not so easy. No. Charlie arlinghouse, and policy. Information. If you want to listen to that again or missed part of it go to wmur. Com, click on news and then click on project economy. Forecast. Morning than it was at this time yesterday and a lot warmer than it will be at this time tomorrow. Thats because of cloud cover and an approaching cold front. Ahead of it, milder air. Temperatures on the 40s to near 50 at the moment. Lets look at whats rolling through, thats rain and rain showers and thats not going to last that long. The solid back edge is starting to work through the Connecticut River valley and will be out of eastern areas by 9 00. The back edge of the clouds, pretty soon thereafter, too, were not going to have a bright and sunny day, we should have a drab day. Theres that afternoon cheering, followed by cooler weather, and you noticed it tomorrow and tuesday, nice and bright, but it will be cooler. Not terribly below normal, but not as mild as today. Then we turn our attention to the south and thats where we have the remnants of what was once Hurricane Patricia, five to ten inches more of rain and lets track that on futurecast as we work sunday into monday and works from texas into dixie and then eventually from dixie into the ohio river valley or right on its doorstep as we move into tuesday. And it really starts to rain anywhere from saturday through West Virginia and Western Areas hampshire. Wednesday, through wednesday night and early on thursday. Thats not to say that we may not have some rain showers ahead of it, but the main event of the storm system with that heavy rain and wind will be here mainly wednesday night. So, for the day today, showers in the morning, some afternoon sun, it will be a breezy and milder day, mainly thanks for the start weve had in the 40s to near 50. It will he be end up 50 near 60. Overnight tonight. Its going to cool out again. Its october, clearing up north, 20s. And most of us in the 30s and mid 30s, manchester and the coast and to start off the work week for many of us for many of us on monday, it will be noticeably cooler. Youre looking far and wide, its going to be nice and sunny and cooler. Temperatures in the mid 40s up north to the highs. Mid to upper 40s, through the lower 50s. Manchester, nashua, out to the seacoast. Here is your next five day forecast, featuring the milder day today, with the afternoon sunshine, at least a little bit. Clouds and sprinkles and showers will hang tough in the white country and lows drop back to the 20s and 30s tonight. Tomorrow is cooler, 52 degrees, but i mean bright, very, very bright. And almost equally as bright, lows in the 20s and highs in the low to mid 50s. High clouds built late in the day and now theres actually a warm front that comes in before the remnants of patricia, that comes in wednesday morning, some clouds and fog and maybe a few showers. Then between that and the main event which comes in mid to Late Afternoon and evening in New Hampshire. Breaks of sun, a milder day, too, on wednesday, and then a lot of rain, and a lot of wind, we could be talking one, two, possibly three inches of rain overnight into thursday, not as bad as texas is seeing as because the storm is going to yank in so much tropical air with it, with any sunny breaks at all on thursday afternoon, albeit windy, mid to upper 60s, it does cool off for the end of the week and halloween proper on saturday. Well, certainly, its a question many parents struggle with. Some worry about being overprotective that it will make their child nervous or insecure. Theyve adopted a style of child rearing called free range parenting, an approach that forced a mother into the National Spotlight earning her the nickname, americas worst mom. Shelley walcott has more. Three, two, one. The main goal of most parents is to watch their children soar, theres a growing debate how much supervision do our children really need . I definitely hover. I do, i hover now and its hard for me to let go. Jennifer admits to whats being referred to often as a helicopter parent. Keeping track of every move throughout the day. You just dont know whats out there. Youre afraid or im afraid, i dont know who is interacting with my child or who might approach my child or how hes going to react so i dont know whats going to happen. I dont know if hes safe. Some parents are more hands off, a style often referred to as free range parenting, a phrase coined by a writer. She wrote a newspaper column about allowing her nineyearold son to ride the new york city subway alone. The Story Went National and within two days, she became known as americas worst mom. Well, after being sort of raked over the coals on all of these talk shows, i wanted to start a blog that weekend that explained that i love safety. Im not an evel knievel type. Im a nervous parent and so, i came up with the name free range kids and trademarked it and thats where it began. She says that free range parents believe their child is not in danger every second theyre unsupervised. However, in you live in a dangerous neighborhood where theres drug deals at the local parks and dryby shootings, you cant send your kids walking to school look you can in the suburbs. And its skepticism about the idea that everything is going to hurt our kids. Still, some parents arent down with the free range Movement Even though many remember their unencumbered childhood. When i was a kid, parents said, basically if you want to go play and i remember riding my bike, two, three towns down. Now days, again, my kids, i would never let them do the same thing that i did. Why do so many parents feel this way . I think the fact that we have access to so much more information, you know, the fact that you can go online and just open your phone and go on the news site and see something that happened. University of New Hampshire sociologist says that theres no one size fits all method to raising kids. The conversation about free range kids and helicopter parents is happening in conversation between upper middle class parents who in my view have a selective memory about their own childhood. The doctor says the most common fear among parents is that their child will be abducted. He says statistics show that probably wont happen and he points out many parents are more free range than they realize since many kids are now just a cell phone call away. I actually think the evidence suggests that because kids have cell phones that can tie them to parents, that parents actually give kids today some more leash than they did before because they know that they can always be in touch with them. Its a combination of techniques two says is her approach. I think it depends on the child. There are some children that need more support and some that take the independence at an earlier age. Doctor agrees with. I dont think that there are rules that one should have for children in general. Its really about the dance between the childrens needs and the situation that theyre in. And hes not going to be coming back to temperatures like this, i do not believe. In fact, this time of year and this time of day is not usually in the mid 40s north and its not usually in the lower 50s south. Thanks to some cloud cover that moved in overnight and a southerly breeze. Cloud cover along with showers, rapidly moving off to the east and in fact, the steady rain for all intents and purposes for south New Hampshire. You can see the back edge of the clouds showing up in northern and central areas of new york state. That moves through here later on this afternoon. And get back to sun with afternoon clearing. Now, there is cooler weather here, but it waits until tonight to filter in. Youll definitely notice it by tomorrow morning by this time and really all day tomorrow, and tuesday, it will be cool and bright, too. And focus our attention off to the south, we have the remains of Hurricane Patricia, i mean, parts of eastern texas, the same story could be seen in louisiana and arkansas, as it moves into dixie and the ohio river valley the next 24 hours, that comes here, Late Wednesday, wednesday night and on thursday in a much weakened form. And certainly not the flooding, you know, feet of rain theyre seeing off to the south. Showers this morning, some afternoon sun, breezy, milder. 40s and 50s, not going to take us a lot for clouds and left over sprinkles. Mid to upper 60s in New Hampshire with at least partly sunny skies, for overnight tonight, you know, it couldnt last, its late october. Clearing north, mostly clear lows in the 20s and thursday, its late october. Its time to realize this is the norm. Elsewhere in the low to possibly mid 30s, now for the day tomorrow. Ok, its going to be cooler, it will be in the mid 40s in places like the North Country, upper 40s, monadnock region and lower 50s elsewhere, but its brighter than its been for the past few days, plenty of sunshine, in fact, hard to find a cloud in the sky tomorrow. Not much more, and high clouds come late in the day after a chilly start and temperatures in the low 50s, there could be fog and morning rain. Thats not the remnant of patricia, thats a warm front working in advance of it. So i call for Late Afternoon rain because the rain of note really comes in mid to Late Afternoon, afternoon evening, up in the North Country. Thats when it could pour in here with enough tropical air left over, mid to upper 60s and 70s, before cooling back off to norm or slightly below, friday 50s. That. And no help from mother nature. If you ever dreamed of owning a mansion steeped in history. This is a manchester beauty its on the market. Chris 20 bedrooms. Whoever buys it needs more than belongings. Adam sexton has the story. A piece of New Hampshire history is now on the open market. An ornate victorian. 20,000 square feet of living space and level of craftsmanship never heard of in modern buildings. And for a good part of the century, it was the home to the bishop and then a convent moved in. Assessed value of the property is more than 600,000. For the list price, the owner is willing to go lower than that. Its shocking, but its 29,900. Greg barrett says that there is just one catch. Once you buy this home, you cant keep it here. It must be moved to a new location, that will give the parish easier access to worship. Its a difficult situation, but the church is attempting to be very sympathetic to the historical significance of this home. Barrett estimates that moving the home locally could cost 2 to 300,000, but says since the listing went up sunday night, calls from come in around the country, meaning if the price is right, one of the most significant Architectural Properties in the queen city could be on the move. Coming up in New Hampshires business, there are two reports out this month on New Hampshire economy saying job growth is lagging massachusetts and the country. 2016. Welcome to New Hampshires business, im fred kocher. One of the pillars of any Strong Economy are jobs. There are two reports out saying that New Hampshire is lagging in the growth of jobs. And were going to talk about that with my two guests who wrote those reports. Dennis, welcome, from the center for Public Policy in New Hampshire. He is the senior economist there, nice to have you. Good morning. And charlie, from the Josiah Center for Public Policy. Good to have you. You agree theres a lag, right . I think we do, yeah. Even though your reports phrase it a little differently. Charlie, you say were lagging behind massachusetts and thats different than in the past when New Hampshire really has led the region of new england in economic recovery from a recession. So, just whats your report really saying . Our thought has always been, New Hampshire is an economic engine and boston is sort of this difficult backwater and thats reversed itself. When we found out that we were one of the ten worst states in the country in job growth postrecession we needed to compare ourselves to massachusetts and massachusetts is growing a lot faster than we are post recession. If we had matched their growth, which is almost double the rate of ours, we would have 27,000 more jobs than we do and we use it as a jumping off point to say is New Hampshire as competitive as it used to be . And i say no. And charlie has that the same, and that report came out and you and the new england economic partnership, as our viewers, it tracks the economies in each of the six states. You were slightly bullish, youre saying yes, theres a lag, but 2016 is going to be a good year. First of all, i dont disagree with a lot of things that charlie said that we have lagged behind massachusetts. I think a lot of the reasons for that are the mix of jobs and industries that we have here in New Hampshire, relative to massachusetts. A lot of the recovery came in the hightech sector and the Financial Services sector, and in health care. And massachusetts is a higher percentage of jobs in those sector than New Hampshire does. I think Going Forward though, 2016 is going to be a very good year. Youve been bullish on 2016. I think that New Hampshire is going to do well in 2016, massachusetts. The massachusetts model manager has a slightly lower growth rate than i do for New Hampshire and next year, and i think that theres a couple of reasons for that that i think are important. One is this reduction in Energy Prices that weve seen over the last couple of years has been a big boon, especially for New Hampshire. And when gasoline prices dropped by a dollar a gallon, that puts about 700 million into the back pockets of businesses and households in New Hampshire and thats a big boost, and also, sass as i said, a lot of the recovery come from the Financial Services industry and we know what happened to the Financial Services industry this year, especially this august. So, the outlook for massachusetts, i dont think, in the next year or so was not quite as positive as it is for New Hampshire. So we may catch up . Charlie, in your report, i think you said were losing our competitive advantage, does that have something do with this . I think it does. We used to be seen as strongly competitive. A lot of areas, one of which is taxes which gets a lot of attention. One which gets less attention energy costs are highest in the country. Were competing with places like tennessee and north carolina. We pay 50 above the National Average for our energy cost, thats a penalty to New Hampshire consumers and businesses and individuals, of 500 million a year every year. We have thousands of people commuting to massachusetts every day . Yeah, we have about 90,000 people in New Hampshire, residents, that are paying a massachusetts income tax. Yeah. So that means theyre paying its about one out of seven people in the labor force. And the massachusetts minimum wage is at 9 00, going to 10 in january and ours is going to stay that way. I think that fewer of the commuters are minimum wage job except maybe right at the border, salem to methuen or Something Like that. 16, 17 of the work force who leaves the state mostly from massachusetts is for other reasons. We did a calculation looking at Educational Attainment of people, the adults in New Hampshire. About 47 of the adults in New Hampshire have an Associates Degree or better, but if you look at the jobs in New Hampshire that require that kind of education, its only about 27 . Yeah. So, that to me could mean that you have highly educated people that are residents of New Hampshire and want to take advantage of our quality of life, but working in massachusetts. In ten seconds, how do we get level . Cut energy costs, cut taxes companies. No. Charlie from Bartlett Center of Public Policy. Dennis, New Hampshire center for licy. Thank you. If you want to listen to that again, go to wmur. Com and click economy. Forecast. Chris hey, folks, chris with you this morning in for josh for one last morning. Josh back next weekend, he misses you all and i bet he misses temperatures in the 40s, actually considering where he is, he probably doesnt. This is pretty much how its supposed to be now. 27 to 36, i know and for those that like it, hey, youre in your glory. For the day tomorrow, had a little cooler than average, i must say, but temperatures in the 40s, lower 50s in the sun though, it will be milder and we will have plenty of sun from sunup to sundown, and its going to be nice and clear. Not terribly windy tomorrow, either. Here is your next five days. Featuring bright and cool weather for tomorrow, after the mild one today. Bright and cool weather for tuesday. Wednesday morning, we have a few showers in the morning, some fog, thats not the leftovers of patricia, thats a warm front that works in before and then we get a mid day sun. Mid to Late Afternoon into the evening when that rain shield moves in, it could pour here. Were talking not feet of rain like in texas, but maybe one to two inches of rain, then it clears, or at least it looks to clear late on thursday, and morning into the afternoon, and that gets us into the 60s before cooling back off for the end of the week and upcoming weekend.
