activities. organizers of the big fishing derby scheduled for the second weekend in february are holding out hope that the lake freezes over so everyone can be safe. >> typically, we would have four to six inches of hard ice. it' s typically safe for people to fish and small groups of people on the ice. suzanne: even though the signs are posted warning people of thin ice, the question is what ice? the record warm temperatures in december have left most of new hampshire lakes wide open. >> usually it takes several nights between zero and -10, no wind and long cold nights for the ice to form on the large lakes. suzanne: something fish and game officials say is unlikely to happen any time soon. outdoor enthusiasts haven' t given up hope though, while others are being cautious. >> oh, we will. it' s supposed to be close to zero monday night which will probably start closing up these bays here. >> i' m hoping, hopefully in the it would be nice. we have the pond hockey classic coming up in the beginning of february. it' s the biggest one in the country, i guess. and then, the ice fishing derby is right after it so we kind of need it. >> i haven' t sent in my derby ticket yet, just in case. suzanne: state officials say even though the waters are still open, it' s against the law to fish from a boat in most lakes. >> just use caution, be patient. eventually, it will get cold enough to fish. suzanne: fish and game officials say if you see ice on a lake and you think it is safe, at this point it probably won' t be able to hold your weight. in meredith, suzanne roantree, wmur news 9. jean: there might not be ice, but there is snow on the slopes. after a slow start to the season, today was a good day to strap on the skis and take a few runs. it was a busy new year' s day at gunstock. >> this is unbelievable. we finally got the colder temperatures. you can' t beat the fact that in the middle of vacation week. we finally got our first snow storm, getting over eight inches here, and now with all the we are able to make more snow. jean: more snow means more open trails and they are also working to get their tubing hill back in running. josh: with the arrival of the new year comes new laws. tonight, wmur' s shelley walcott takes a look at some of them, plus the hot topics of the next session which starts wednesday. shelley: many of the more than 200 new new hampshire laws that go into effect today apply to the roads. failing to yield to an emergency vehicle will now cost you $150, up from $100. passing a stopped school bus will lead to a $500 fine and a 30-day suspension of your license. speeding in a 70 mile-an-hour zone could cost you up to $400. and new hampshire residents convicted of drunk driving for the first time will still have their license suspended for 45 days, but they now have a chance to get their license restored earlier than the average six to nine months. and installation of an ignition interlock system that stops a vehicle from starting if the driver has been drinking. as for the new legislative session, key bills up for debate include prohibiting the shark fin trade and whether new hampshire should have a registry listing convicted heroin dealers, similar to the one that now exists for sex offenders. i' m shelley walcott, wmur news 9. josh: a happy homecoming this afternoon in manchester as 120 citizen soldiers returned home. jean: after spending nearly a year in the middle east, they were overwhelmed with emotion as they reunited with loved ones. wmur' s heather hamel was there and has more. heather: tears and many hugs and kisses. families could hardly contain themselves when the bus rolled in and 120 soldiers got off, heading straight into the arms of those who missed them so much. >> this is tristan. he is two months old tomorrow. heather: his dad was there for his birth last year and his mom says this january 1 reunion is just another blessing. >> it' s going to be fun for because he is two months old and babies do a lot of growing in two months. he' s going to be surprised. heather: elizabeth and tristan were two of many who waited patiently for their beloved soldier to arrive. [applause] and when they walked in, the emotions ran wild. >> i missed you, too. i love you so much. >> this is my second employment -- deployment so i kind a new what to expected. heather: these men and women were deployed to the middle east in february for a u.s. army training mission. some say the anticipation overwhelming. >> the whole bus was going crazy . >> once the wheels are on the s s exactly what it was like for me. heather: it really set in when he saw the beautiful face. the mother says a she was longer. >> everything. we anticipate all of that. we know we don' t want to because we know it is farther away. heather: and they both say this is priceless. >> i want him to go away again but it was great to have them, home. -- have him come home. heather: this isn' t the only homecoming for the new hampshire army national guard this week. tomorrow morning, another 100 soldiers will be returning to the state. reporting live, heather hamel, wmur news 9. josh: next at 6:00 -- putting your candidate knowledge to the test. >> how about the guy with the glasses in the center? >> no. josh: you don' t recognize him at all? you' ve never seen him? >> no, i don' t have cable. >> we know ted cruz, mike huckabee. jim gilmore. josh: man, you got them all. high-five. you are from new hampshire. nice hat. she did good. for a lot of voters, now is when they really start paying attention. so, if you' d like to brush up on the candidates, you can do so by wmur.com. jean: she earned that hate getting all of them -- hat getting all of them. mike: we haven' t figured out for now. that was funny. weather-wise, maybe not so funny because we have the coldest of the season so far. you got people working incredibly long hours. median family income today -- $4,000 less than it was in 1999. the bottom line of this economy is that it is rigged. what this campaign is about is to demand that we create an economy that works for all of us rather than a handful of billionaires. if you work 40 hours a week in america, you should not live in poverty. i'm bernie sanders, josh: new hampshire welcomed its new year' s babies today. jean: one of the first arrivals was at elliot hospital in manchester just two minutes after midnight just across the city, and minutes later, catholic medical center welcomed its first baby. wmur' s kristen carosa introduces us. kristen: celebrating the start of a new year is an exciting time, but this year was extra special for several families in the state as they welcomed new additions to their families. >> the mom couldn' t wait any longer for the baby to come out. kristen: angel vega of manchester is the proud father of one of new hampshire' s first >> we weren' t planning it. it just happened like that. kristen: his name is phoenix angel vega bolduc, born six pounds, 14 ounces at 12:02 a.m. he says mom is tired, but doing just fine. >> after she gave birth, they tears. kristen: an hour and a half later at catholic medical center in manchester, eloise steeves came into the world. >> she is very healthy, very happy. she likes being close. kristen: she was born to proud parents joelle and stephen steeves of milford at 1:38 a.m. >> went into labor a little earlier than planned which was exciting. kristen: joelle says she remembers watching the ball drop on new year' s ee and then shortly after going into labor. >> i can' t even express it. it' s unbelievable. kristen: she says she couldn' t have gotten through it without the help of her husband. >> he let me squeeze his hand as much as i wanted and i almost ripped his arm off a couple of times. kristen: eloise came 10 days early and it just happened to land on new year' s day. >> we always thought that she would be ready for the camera, and little did we know that right when she came out, she' s ready for the camera. kristen: and now that she' s >> i can' t wait to take her home and have her sleep in her crib for the first time and everything. there is nothing that i am not kristen: we spoke to several staff members that assisted with both families. they say this process is just as special for them. reporting in manchester, kristen carosa, wmur news 9. announcer: now mike haddad with your storm nine watch forecast. is not that bad with temperatures above the norm. at newfound lake, the clouds winning the battle over the sun. you also noticed a lot of open water still on the lakes region. weekend. starting early next week, things change. how about a recap of 2015? the highest temperature last year was 96 back on july 29. some like it cold -- that is ridiculous. after a quiet start, we saw a lot of this -- snow and a lot of cold in january and february before the slow recovery in march. temperatures somewhere in between with snow showers moving through parts of the state. most of them are lining up in the lakes region through the mount washington valley and the heart of the white mountains. we could see maybe an inch between now and 8:00. a little bit more of accumulation in the white mountains overnight into early tomorrow morning. temperature wise, still a little above the norm. anywhere from the low 30' s north. overnight tonight, still above the average. clouds and snow showers will keep temperatures up at least in the low 20' s in the great north woods between 20 and 26 big changes in our temperature over the next few days. right now, cool across a good part of the northeast while the real cold stuff, the coldest so far this season, is off to the north and west. slowly it goes in our direction and gets here by sunday afternoon. by sunday night, monday and tuesday, we get an arctic chill with temperatures below the norm for a change. but, notice the rest of the country warming up again. there it goes. the arctic air out of here by wednesday, thursday and friday. next weekend, seasonably cool air. there will be a disturbance to the south that we have to track friday and saturday of next week. in the short term, no big storms to watch. we have some snow right now in parts of northern and central new hampshire. could be some flurries in some southern zones. the arctic front will approach on sunday. another round of snow showers cannot be ruled out. monday and tuesday. 18 to 26. not that cold tonight. a pleasant weekend with temperatures in the upper 20' s and lower 30' s north. the best shot of snow showers will be on sunday, although there could be lingering once tomorrow up north. monday and tuesday, the coldest of the season. no 20 south -- low 20' s south but they get out of here by early next week. josh: the bruins got embarrassed today. jim: the nhl winter classic. announcer: now news nine sports. jim: a classic matchup for the winter classic. today, gillette stadium hosted the rival boston bruins and montreal canadiens. close to 70,000 enjoying the mild winter afternoon. but for the mostly bruins fans, that turned cold real quick. first period, montreal scores one minute, 14 seconds after the puck drop. david desharnais swings it in from mid-air -- 1-0, canadiens. second period, two minutes in, paul byron puts the canadiens up 2-0. he cuts in front and scores. by the time it was 3-0, boston finally started applying offensive pressure. ryan spooner almost gets the b' s third period, boston scores its only goal of the game. adam mcquaid fires from the right wing circle. matt beleskey tips it home. the bruins go on to lose, 5-1. clearly, not happy with their performance on the big stage. >> it is embarrassing. really disappointing. yeah, an embarrassing loss. >> i think everyone is really disappointed, really frustrated with the way we showed up tonight or today. you know, i cannot pinpoint a reason why. jim: unh hockey fans have to be excited for the second half of the season as the calendar turns. the wildcats are undefeated in their last six games, including a 7-0 win over maine wednesday night in manchester. the team had a prolific offense, a really good goalie, and now, the struggling defense is starting to come together. unh plays at vermont saturday >> we got some players back. they were missing for about a month. getting them back will help us on defense. jim: last night, the manchester monarchs won in overtime. they beat the greenville swamp rabbits, 3-2. gasper kopitar scored the game-winning goal in ot -- a proper transition to the new year' s fireworks. this was the 15th annual new year' s eve hockey game at verizon wireless arena, but the first for the echl monarchs. head coach richard seeley spoke more about the win. guys. puck possession is the game. trying to keep the shifts short as we can. i think we had them for a while net. jim: trophies night is tomorrow. jean: thank you. josh: right now on wmur.com, is dieting your new year' s resolution?
