WMUR News 9 At Five December 5, 2015

No one covers New Hampshire like we do. Now, wmur news 9 at 5 00. Adam we start tonight with commitment 2016 coverage. Right now, democratic president ial candidate Bernie Sanders is speaking at a town hall at plymouth state university. Good evening, i m adam sexton. Stephanie and i m stephanie woods. Earlier today, the vermont senator held another town hall at a different school. About 1100 people packed the Redfern Arts Center at Keene State College this afternoon. Sanders spoke about a Political Revolution, doing away with the establishment economy, politics, and media, and reviving democracy. Income inequality and threats to Social Security a major problems facing our country according to the democratic hopeful. Sanders said that he spoke in keene because he s running for president and wants students support, but he also wants more. What the Political Revolution is about is that i need you, up to the election. We need you the day after the election. [applause] and the reason for that is that the powers that be in this country, a nation which is increasingly moving toward an oligarchic form of society both economically and politically, the reason we need a Political Revolution is we cannot bring about the kinds of fundamental changes we need unless millions of people are prepared to stand up to wall street, corporate america, and Large Campaign donors. Stephanie mike cronin is covering his speech in plymouth and will have more later tonight. Adam a day after making a headlinegrabbing speech before the republican jewish coalition, senator Lindsey Graham is back on the firstinthenation in the wake of the terrorlinked mass shooting in california, he says it s time to take action before it happens again. So i always talk about national security. Mike even at a women s Initiative Forum in manchester, senator Lindsey Graham stays on message. While addressing topics ranging from the heroin epidemic to domestic violence, he still managed to tie issues back to safety, security, and foreign policy. He tells news 9 he s eager for more information about the woman involved in the San Bernardino shooting, who reportedly pledged allegiance to isis before the attack. The one thing i want to know, was she radicalized before she married this guy . I ve always been concerned about isil recruiting women to marry them off to get into the United States. Adam graham says if this was a socalled terroristarranged marriage, then it s time to reexamine the u. S. Visa system. These people had thought about what they were doing. They had made bombs. They had planned. And they had a sixmonthold child. If that doesn t tell you about nothing will. Adam as far as what more can be done on the homefront, graham is pointing the finger at two of his colleagues and competitors. Our n. S. A. Capabilities have been reduced. Senators cruz and paul combined their efforts to neuter the data mining system. Adam even though polls show graham at the bottom of the pack, Top Republicans like House Speaker shawn jasper, who has yet to endorse a candidate, say the senator is worth a look from voters. But he also thinks the size of the g. O. P. Field is both a blessing and a curse. That s part of the problem. When you look at the frontrunner, he s at 30 of the vote. That means 70 of the people who are planning on voting are with somebody else. Adam on the local front, the senator promised to assist local efforts to fund a Stabilization Center in manchester for heroin users who are seeking help taking the first steps from addiction to recovery. Fellow republican candidate Ohio Governor john kasich was also in New Hampshire today. Governor kasich started his day rally in claremont. He told people there that he thinks the u. S. Needs to lower the cost of health care coverage. The governor also went on to say that he thinks it is important to help rehabilitate people with addictions. Kasich also held a town hall in and you can find the latest political news by heading over to our website, wmur. Com politics. Dozens of people stood on main Street Holding signs and listening to speakers, some of them from the immigrant community. Wmur s Kristen Carosa was there and joins us live with more. Kristen today s rally was peaceful, a chance for people to unite in their support for refugee resettlement. Dozens gathered around the state house Holding Signs saying we welcome refugees and we welcome the stranger. Many of them there today say after the terror attacks in paris, there is an increased fear of people from other countries. They say while the fear of terrorists is understandable, they should not associate s rally, sharing stories and support for their fellow neighbors no matter what their background. Arnie alpert i think what we need to do is to be working at being peacemakers, which means to some extent dealing with our fear, but also looking at the root causes of some of the conflicts that we are seeing. Will hopkins i am an iraq war vet. And if i learned anything during my year in iraq, it was that an iraqi child is no different than an american child. They are just as human, they are just as innocent, and they have just as much right to live in peace and safety. Kristen will hopkins organized the event.
