now to the top stories. we have the police officer in baltimore seriously hurt after he was shot in an attempted robbery. we have been following this all morning long. he was shot on his way home on high gate avenue in northwest baltimore. investigators say the officer was leaving work about to walk into his home when two men tried to rob him. gunfire was exchanged and he was hit several times. >> never had anything -- anything like this since i have been here, i have been here seven years, nothing like this. i don't trust anyone. if you don't live here i don't trust you. i'm very observant. a spokesperson said officers are talking to two people of interest. they will hold a news conference. we will be there. there will be a update on the case. doctors are optimistic that the officer will recover. the police department is mourning the loss of one of their own. officer jason simon died in a car crash yesterday. he was driving into work when he lost control of his truck. his truck slammed into the guardrail and flipped over trapping him inside. you worked in the towson precinct. he was 32 years old. kick backs, shakedowns, wire taps a plot out of the wire but it happened and it involved a veteran police officer. and detective mark mumford stole and getting kick backs. the fbi arrested him. the detective after the informant recorded conversations. it alleged that he may have used city money in order to carry out his plot. the 20-year veteran has been suspended without pay. he will be in court next month. and a 13-year-old girl is in the hospital with h1n1 virus. she is in the 8th grade and fos to northeast baltimore. she got ill at school on monday and she went to the hospital. the baltimore sun said she is getting stronger, the school said the building will be cleaned according to the health dependent's procedures. schools had planned the day off today. senior center in park height is empty after being dedicated back in june. a there was a need for a center and they had the vision they brought the project to light. it happened then there was a dedication. the city and the sorority have. have to work out a lease agreement. >> there are parties involved, they're at the table making sure that, you know, it is going to operate smoothly. >> and we're trying to open it up. >> and the city center says they should be open by november. loyola college is no long ter is loyola college is loyola university. today the school celebrates the change to university. students considered university more prestigious. and the president said the new title will be >> they were excited to see them. they were happy to have the birds here in maryland. when they're not going to games they will be out on exhibit. they will be out every purple friday and we'll take them out and use them for school programs. i'm surprised how big they are. are they heavy? >> they way a pound and a half. this is fine i can tell you on sunday i'll have raven arm for a day or two. >> not the other raven arm on the field. >> so, when you -- what else can you tell us about them. they are from alabama, they came from a breeder in alabama. they were young so we could hand raise them and bond with the trainers. that helps withen we take them out to situations and crowds. they're very comfortable with us. >> they are comfortable around crowds, we wanted to make sure they would be used to that and not be stressed out. >> you take them to the game on sunday. is there a place that, do they hope they see them? >> we will be from 10 to 11:30 then out on the side lines during the pregame. >> wow! that's -- you are going to do this every game. >> for all home games. they will be out every purple friday. they will be on exhibit at the zoo and if people check out the web site they can see when they are on exhibit. >> and is this the only animal that you take around or do you do a bunch of them. >> reduce he have 70 ambassadors that are busy or it is about the ravens now. and those are used for pr, they're used for school programs. they're all, woulding animals. >> i have to tell you i'm impressed with them. they're fascinating to work with i should check them out. what is with the beek. they are very -- i cannot think of any other way to describe it but for intense. >> they have beautiful eyes and the beak serves a person. they were saf skapblg any food they can find. that's for tearing the feet apart. >> have they torn nick apart that surprised you, my hand. that's why we do lots of training. >> anything else that are they pick it. ky at all, will they eat anything? the ham. that will, now you can use regular bacon fat or a ham hock. i like the italian ham because of the flavor of it. and it all depends. and the pepper will give it a quick. it is smoked peppers. what i want to do is get the flavors. you have the red onions. peppers and tomatoes. you want to get that together. that will make the soup have the kick to it. >> it smells fantastic. you don't put oil in the fan. >> it has fat in it. >> now i'm impressed with you. because you can cook. it is ambitious. but you are doing this now i'm thinking i could do this at home. >> most people think there is a lot to it. there is not. if you are doing chicken noodle. it depends on the cook or the chef's interpretation. it is soup or this or that. >> it smells good. what is that. >> it is the flavors from the fat. and it is where the peppers and onions. once you finish sauteeing them. they are pretty much cooked at the same time. i' going to stir it up. we have a minute. we're good. >> and water and trying to find it. and. >> i have to ask you if there is one thing i willnd up doing it. what don't you want to do don't add a lot of salt. >> and i have some for you to taste. >> little chive on top. >> you like teaching at the college. >> i love. it i have been into the and like that and have an opportunity to teach what i love doing it is something that i have enjoyed doing so having the chance to get it back to what i learned. >> they're lucky to have you. we'll be right back. and that's how verizon fios works. any questions?
