Lines and lots of waiting. Kentucky is just one of several states where voters are letting their voices be heard on what s being called super saturday. Good evening everyone and thanks for joining us. I m courtis fuller. The polls closed at 4 00, but not before some chaotic scenes throughout Northern Kentucky. We have Team Coverage tonight, of the kentucky caucuses. Jenell walton is in boone county. But first lets go to todd dykes, he s live in kenton county. Todd . Reporter voters waited in long lines this afternoon, but there were eager to weigh in on the race for the white house. Based on state Republican Party rules, each of the big 3 counties boone, campbell and kenton had just one caucus site each. The voting started at 10 00 this morning and ended at 4 00. Because of the uniqueness of this day and because part of today leading republican strategists told me beforehand they thought turnout out would be low. But as you can see, there were plenty of people who put the democratic process ahead of everything else. A real democracy in action. People are fed up. They re looking for change. They want to return to godly principles in the country. And they really feel strongly about that. They want honesty out of our government. They want honesty out of our businesses, and they want love for all citizens. And it s time to stand up and be counted and boy they re doing it here today. Reporter there was a lot of passion on display today. Today s caucus happened because former candidate rand paul wanted to run for the white house while also having a chance to keep his u. S. An unexpected turnout of voters. Parking lots packed and hour long waits. Wlwt news 5 s Jenell Walton continues our Team Coverage tonight. Jenell . Reporter there was such a large turnout here in boone county the sheriff s department had deputies here, directing traffic into and out of the Church Parking lot. Some people said they actually waited up to an hour to caucus. Some people said they tried to have a strategy when they saw the long lines. There were some voters who said they actually tried to caucus earlier in the day but left and came back hoping there wouldn t be as long of a line to park. However, caucus Officials Say the crowds just kept coming. The caucus chair says there was a steady crowd for the first two hours. One voter said she came in hopes of keeping trump from winning the caucus in kentucky by voting for senator ted cruz. Another voter said just the he wants to see change, and that s why he supported trump. The republicans who turned out say it was exciting to see such a large turnout for their first ever president ial caucus. My strategy was to go to the Grocery Store and come back and then the line exiting here and the line exiting north and south i75 were just totally backed up all day, just really bad. It was a really bad decision, just to have this at one place. It was really bad for this large of a county. Reporter the polls were scheduled to close at 4 00 p. M. , entryway. Senator ted cruz has just been declared the winner of kansas. The remaining candidates for president are campaigning hard today, trying to get voters out to the polls in five States Holding caucuses and primaries. For republicans, it s the first chance to gauge the mitt romney effect, whether the former s broadside against donald trump convinces voters to s frontrunner. In kansas, trump fired back. Trump mitt romney was a disaster as a candidate. No energy, no life, no nothing. He was a stiff. Chris florida senator marco rubio kept up his attack on trump, criticizing him for skipping an annual gathering of conservatives in washington, implying the trump isn t one. Ohio Governor John Kasich still refuses to engage in the gop s war of insults. Focusing instead on the one prize that could breathe new life into his bid for the nomination. A reading man is now accused of holding his girlfriend at gunpoint and hurting her 10monthold son. Swat responded to the apartment complex on maple drive last night. 35yearold neal royal is being held on a 350,000 dollar bond charged with assault and kidnapping. His girlfriend says royal stepped on her son and hit him in the face inside her apartment. She says he then pointed a gun at her and told her not to leave. The landlord says the girlfriend called police when royal went back to his own apartment in the same complex and barricaded himself inside. In mount washington, a house after flames broke out just before 11 00 last night on eagles ridge lane. Firefighters say flames were seen coming from the roof. They knocked it out fairly quickly.
