after an army veteran is found dead. how they' re using his story to reach out to others who are struggling tonight. 27-year-old aaron berns had been missing since the first of the year. evening, im courtis fuller thanks for joining us. berns, went missing after authorities say he started a fire at a morrow home and jumped in to a river to elude them. tonight, his family says while they' ve gotten closure they hope his death means more. wlwt news 5' s tammy mutasa spoke to his parents and joins us live with more. tammy? reporter: courtis. even though aaron' s body was found yesterday, the family wanted to still have the vigil today. not just for their son but for other people with ptsd. the vigil had already been planned for sunday but the closure came the day before. >> it felt like it was meant to be. reporter: aaron berns' body was found in the little miami river day. let' s -- >> it' s been a long two months, very long time. reporter: deputies say the 27-year-old jumped into the river while on the run from deputies. investigators say he set a morrow duplex on fire. >> it' s a nightmare the first two days police did a very intensive search near the river where he went missing the river was 8 feet above it' s normal level. reporter: before his death, berns was an army veteran. he went to combat on two tours in iraq. >> he did bring a lot of joy to the people he met over in iraq . he went around with the generals and he was the soldier on their side. reporter: but back home, his family says he struggled with post traumatic stress disorder. >> maybe this will wake up somebody somewhere to say we need to do something before young people come home and find out they can' t adjust. t find the peace he longed for maybe with this vigil someone else will. what -- >> i just hope that there are many other people out there maybe that are searching for peace that will be helped instead of finding an end such as this. berns' family said he had a tough childhood too. but he loved judo, martial arts and serving his country. reporting live tammy mutasa wlwt news 5. courtis: thanks a lot. the family continues to organize search parties for the past seven weeks throughout warren county. also new tonight. two people suffered minor injuries after a crash sent one car into an apartment in walnut hills. investigators say a car ran a red light at gilbert and nassau and collided with another car. the driver who ran the light hit the emery village apartments. a passenger in the car hurt -- suffered injuries to a hand. a girl inside the apartment taken to the hospital to be checked out. neither driver was hurt. police are looking for the person who shot someone in the stomach near a white castle. -- in avondale restaurant on reading road. police took the shooting victim to u.c. medical center. they haven' t released the person' s condition tonight. police say it' s unclear exactly where the shooting took place. or if the shooter knew the victim. an argument in westwood ended with a shot fired. it happened about 1:30 this morning in the 3,000 block of bracken woods lane. police say a family was drinking, when two people got into an argument, someone took out a gun and fired a shot, a bullet grazed one person. but they should be o.k.. happening tomorrow. cincinnati' s mayor and police chief will host their final forum about reducing violent crime. past sessions have suggested more development and job you can offer your ideas to deal with the violence at the college hill community center. the forum starts at 6:30 tomorrow night. tomorrow, the community will say goodbye to a west side legend. price hill chili owner chris beltsos died of cancer at the age of 47. today we found a long line of mourners outside the meyer and geiser funeral home waiting to pay their respects. beltsos' funeral takes place tomorrow. >> we heard some noises, you don' t really think much of it. you hear noises all the time. and then i heard it hit the siding and that is when i looked out the back window and saw a car speeding off. courtis: police in kalamazoo michigan arrested a man who went on the shooting spree. he shot a people, six of them died. >> more than 24 hours after shots were fired, people imprint. 45-year-old jason dalton. the shooting began on saturday just before 6:00 at it eight apartment complex. >> i checked out the back window and saw a car driving off. i looked out here and assault a woman laying down. the victim lay mother of three is in serious condition. the shooting continued for more than four hours. 64 killed including tyler smith and his father richard shot shopping for a new car. mary jo nine spent the evening in a play. seven hours after the shots were fired, police apprehended jason >> we found evidence that each one of these car crime scenes. reporter: dalton was a driver for uber. one man claims that he rode with them before he was arrested. >> icon us said jokingly to the driver, you are not the shooter, are you? reporter: they do not know why. >> we do not know what the motive is. our common denominator is nothing. reporter: community and did not have a criminal record. courtis: in the midst of this tragic incident, among the victims was a 14-year-old girl that was taken to the hospital and reported dead but was written rush to surgery -- was a squeezed her mother' s hand. two men suffered serious injuries after crash in center was. it happened on the 1600 block of poplar street. police believe that the driver was impaired. he is listed in critical condition tonight. the driver of the other car is in serious condition. in westwood. a building is boarded up tonight. after police say a driver crashed into it and took off. owners of a t.v. repair shop had to bring in structural engineers after the crash to make sure the building wouldn' t collapse. this was what the scene on harrison looked like early this morning right after the driver hit the building. a major milestone for a local athelete one of those moments caught on camera wlwt news 5' s elise jesse is in the newsroom to explain. elise: the simon kenton girls basketball program has had a they beat highlands thursday night on a buzzer beater from the other end of the court. derek forrest caught up with the team this week . derek: thanks a lot elise, i am here at grant county high school as simon kenton prepares for their district round matchup with grant county on monday night. but more specificially i am here to talk about their sopohomore guard ally niece who just broke the 2,000 point mark. >> i think i attack more than i shoot outside which is probably why i get a lot of my points. from attacking the rim and staying aggressive is probably my biggest thing. >> she can put the ball in the hole. and like she said, her strength is getting to the basket. but don' t let that fool you. because ally has chosen not to take that outside shot. and that is something we worked with her on. as far as shooting the ball from the perimeter. derek: and just when i thought my story was headed in one direction with ally, it headed in to another. evolving around the topic of her hitting this 3 quarters court shot thursday night versus highlands. >> we shoot sometimes, half anything back there and i never make them. so it wasn' t like i was like planning to make it or anything. derek: do you think after practice you can hit that shot for me? >> no, we can try. derek: and then this happened on her very first attempt. somebody else, it' s pretty special. courtis: they westchester teenager who suffers from asp burgers syndrome is showing everyone that nothing can stand in the way of doing something for others and making a difference for our youth. >> it was a really hard decision but i knew it was the right thing to do. courtis: meet 13-year-old kassidy, to say she loves her stuffed animals would be an uinderstatement, in fact she has about 500 stuff animals. that' s why her decision to bring many of them here to the west chester fire department is an important lesson about giving. t have stuff animals because of fires, well they' re homeless most of them so i decided to give up some of my stuff animals i really don' t play with anymore. >> it' s really great she' s really a special kid. she donates anything she can to anybody when she can. i never thought she would part with her sutff animals she' s had them for a while. she had 500 stuff animals they all had names, all had personalities and now they are getting good homes. courtis: now kassidy wants other children to donate stuff animals you might say this has become her mission, to share the joy those toys bring her, with other children who might be going through a rough time in their lives. >> mostly we see donations from the hospital or corporate donor but for an individual to give up her toys fior somebody else it' s pretty special. kassidy cleaver: when kids are scared and nervous they can have things to attach to like my first stuffed animal. she just turned 13 last month. by the way asperger' s is a condition that delays the development of many basic skills most notably the ability to socialize with others. courtis: a picture perfect weekend for weather now over. saturday was just gorgeous with pressure moving its way from the north. it will keep our weather on the quiet side and start to cool us off a little bit. overnight tonight we were going to drop into the lower 30' s. most of it is going to be new the freezing level. upper 20' s. nothing earth shattering. but we do have another big weather maker heading our way for the metal the week aaron that might bring up some milder weather us rain at first on wednesday. it' ll will be on that beside. thursday morning, that snow, we could see some snow showers here even some light accumulations. but it will be windy as we head into thursday. we' ll see snow back in the forecast. amateurs will plummet from the highs on the 50' s on wednesday. your forecast tonight is down to 32 degrees. partly cloudy skies and turning a little bit colder out there. maybe a little frost on the windshields. by the afternoon it' ll be 46, cooler with some sun and some clouds. a few more clouds on tuesday, wednesday is mild but rainy. than those temperatures fall all day thursday bringing snow showers a could even be slick in spots during the afternoon as temperatures drop below freezing. friday and saturday, some flurries. i can winter. so soak up the next couple of days. courtis: new video tonight of of a megabus fire in iliinois. despite the damage, no one was hurt. firefighters say the bus was fully engulfed by the time they arrived on scene. passengers say they smelled rubber from the start of their trip in chicago. at one point they heard a loud pop and then a big explosion. >> when i heard the first boom, i was in the bathroom and i came out to a lot of smoke. i could barely get off the bus because it was full of black smoke. and as i got off to catch my breath started walking down the highway the bus blew up again and fire came from everywhere. courtis: the cause of the fire is still under investigation tonight. hundreds of people huffed and puffed their way to healthier lungs today. the annual fight for air climb made its way up and down carew tower. racers ran or walked all 45 stories of the tower. and the ones taking on the vertical mile, climbed the 804 steps more than 10 times. american lung association. and it attracts many people, who lost family members to lung disease. >> i' ve watched what happens with people that don' t take care of themselves. so i climb the stairs for them. i
