This is the 36 hundred block of wiggins street. Off dearborn drive in durham. You can see shell casings littering the street. Durham police say eyewitnesses didnt get a good look at the shooters car. Investigators are still on the scene tonight. This newscast. Or abc11dotcom. Now to matthews aftermath. And a family trying to shield their grandmother from the destruction caused by the hurricane. Good evening, everyone. Im steve daniels. Diane sandy is just one of the thousands of people who lost nearly everything in the flooding. And im tisha powell. Diane lived in erwin. On avery tenants road. And her home is now in ruins. Shes now staying with family and looking for somewhere new to live. Angelica alvarez is live in erwin with her story. Angelica . Of her home. Its now condemned. You can see the water took out the back of the home. Inside. Things are tossed around. Sandy says this area usually floods during a good rain. But says this time. The water was almost to the roof here. My deck floated away, but they got just a few minutes longer i wouldnt be here. The gravity of what diane sandy went through still hitting her hard. She was inside of this mobile home on avery tenants road when rain from Hurricane Matthew swelled a nearby creek. Sending water rushing through her home. When i got scared, really scared, is when i saw water coming under my front door and under the wall by my front door and it was just rushing in there just like you turn on the bathtub. She says by the time a rescue boat was at her door. Water was up to her shoulders. I was really lucky, i was lucky tha sandy escaping with just the clothes on her back. But she says the impending storm and evacuating. Wasnt the first thing on her mind that day. It happened on october the 8th, and i was already upset because that was 35 years to the day that i buried my oldest son. Thinking of him. She was able children. And found it safe and sound when the water went down. My son went in there and he saw where i stuck my portrait and he got it. Unfortunately. The receding waters also showing not much else left behind. Her home torn apart. And completely torn off its porch. Now sitting across the yard. Still. Sandy is thankful she made it out and has family to lean on. Its my fault, i didnt get out sooner, but i just kept thinking, you never want to think the worst. She is staying with family and is looking for a new place to live. Only one condemned here. Weve seen another mobile home with a no trespassing sign. And across the creek. Surviving homes are also dealing with damage. sad news from the Robeson County flood zone. family members tell Eyewitness News the body of Barbara Feldman was found in her car today. On highway 211 in lumberton at the height of the storm. Her husband david was rescued. The feldmans were traveling from south florida to new york for his fathers funeral. 26 stormrelated deaths have been reported in North Carolina, so far. A show of unity from princeville town leaders as the Community Faces the task of rebuilding from devastating flood waters for the second time in a two decades. Leaders walked with members of the national guard. As they surveyed the damage for the fit the guard has been here for a week pumping water out of princeville. Parts of the town was under as much as ten feet of water. And at least eight out of ten homes are damaged. A major road is back open in one eastern North Carolina city thats still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. Business owners along the us 70 bypass in kinston were able to get to their businesses today. The highway closed last wednesday as the neuse river covered it with water. Lionel stapleford owns stapleford marine. And says he cried a little bit when he saw the damage up close for the damage. And significant losses to his business. A gain for a horse rescued from flooding in cumberland county. You may remember bob. The countys Swift Water Rescue Team had to move bob from the countys livestock pen. When it started filling with water. Bob was moved through deeper waters before reaching higher ground. Tonight were happy to report bob has a new forever home. A shelter attendant adopted bob. And now hell spend his days giving rides to crusader youth camp in dunn. H way to those families in our local communities who lost so much in the flooding thanks to your generosity. You amazed us by your donations to our abc11 together Hurricane Relief food drive in raleigh. Durham and fayetteville today. We filled 15 trucks. And collected a lot of cash too. This uhaul arrived in front of our downtown raleigh newsroom with a truckload of love from siler city. Our Community Just wanted to be a blessing to some of the flood spread the word and got 30 people at new Beginnings Ministry to fill the truck. Sometimes we just take things for granted and we just wanted to do a small portion this is just a collection for two days. All day long people lined up on fayetteville street dropping off food. Cleaning supplies and other necessities. Joey dean collected a truckload of donations from two raleigh neighborhoods woodcrest and Belvedere Park inside the beltline. I was sitting in my house without power for four days and moaning and i was down east and i was like i had to do something, i cant be moaning about not having power, when these people have nothing, i mean nothing. An amazing sight at our Downtown Durham studio. Long lines of of people on liberty street stoppingby with donations. Durham firefighters and volunteers from trosa loading the trucks and keeping all that traffic moving. And in the crowd jeff and jackie johnson. I woke up last thursday and i told my husband, i need to do something. So jackie started surfing the internet. I said oh local news they should that you all were collecting. They own jj deli in herndon, virginia. They put out an appeal for donations on facebook. And this morning they made the five hour drive to durham. My goal was were not driving down unless its loaded, so sure enough we had tons and tons of canned goods. At our downtown fayetteville newsroom people donated well into the evening. I think people are in need, especially if youve lost everything you had. Every little thing helps. Roseanne johnson knows the feeling tornado 15 years ago. It just lifts your spirit to know that the rest of the Community Cares about you. And with the huge outpouring of donations we were grateful to have people like Raleigh College student david chayko recognize our need for help. Im actually on fall break for school and i was reading this book on siddhartha and its about helping people in ways, so i decided it was my turn. And when Yolanda Scott stopped by our raleigh newsroom to donate food. She trucks. I was here i was like why not go ahead and volunteer and they said sure so i just jumped in and started helping. Its really nice to see people coming together to help others. You also donated cash 130 thousand dollars by calling our phone bank. One caller said she was making a donation from her Social Security check. And couldnt wait for her next check to arrive so she could donate more. New tonight a 20 yearold raleigh man accused of abusing a baby died. Raleigh Police Say Officers were called out to a home in the 800 block of suffolk boulevard sunday night. The call involved a 10month old baby girl. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Marcus alston. Is charged with felony child abuse and murder in connection with the little girls death. Hes in the wake county jail. A guy with a long rap sheet including three dwi convictions now accused of a hitandrun crash in cary that sent two bicyclists to the hospital. Christopher moore.
