We are live at 5 00 and take a look at the skies over downtown cleveland. Very active. It is a storm rolling and over the lake and video from the last few minutes. Park of course now downtown people can hear the thunder. We have thousands of people without power at this hour. We want to get straight over to betsy who has been keeping an eye on these storms. How serious is this . A lot of people are looking at this and social media is blowing out. It is a very impressive looking storm and it is a seve first energy is reporting more than 32,000 customers in tioga county alone without power. Here is the thunderstorm as it continues to march to the east. Torrential rain coming with this as it continues eastbound. 5 16 garfield heights, 5 22 for you click, 5 32 for east lake and this would be a heads up to move to the east. It is beginning to weekend a little bit and i do say a little bit, we are probably getting some hail. Take a look right now, this is hail potential. It was over an inch and a half and it is now down to one and possible hail. The star of this show and as the storm continues i mentioned the possibility of some went just as well. Here is the went we are looking into the thunderstorm as far as the rain is moving and as we take a look at some of these pixels and you can see a 60 mileperhour wind gusts. This is all off the ground. Within the thunderstorm what it is propelled by gravity. That was yesterday. A lot of rain came down in a small area. It will continue to ease with the storm as well. The winds will likely do the most damage. Rocky river including is fantastic and you see downtown cleveland is picking up some wind gusts. This is not a twisting when. This is Straight Line and i command was impressive, but keep in mind scary looking clouds do not immediately mean tornadoes so this is not a tornado threat at this point this is high winds whole lot of heavy rain and also lightning and thunder with the possibility of hail. You can see the lightning strike. I will query this and we will get a count because we have seen some unbelievable lightning. This is a sign that this 10 minutes ago or 15 minutes ago when this world in the downtown cleveland. Impressive low hanging clouds. The current number of strikes within the last 15 minutes, 628 strikes. We still have the storm go very as that happens that could be when the down burst went becomes a big threat we could have a high wind threat with this particular storm. This is also going to be impacting traffic quite a bit. We have cameras throughout and i want to get a quick scope of downtown midland traffic. You can see the road and how slow it is right now not only on 90, but also 71 at four 480. Im going to try and grab some sky cam. This is i71 and clark. You can see the very heavy rain and backed up traffic. This is just before the 490 split. We also come closer to we will take a look at this. We have a very heavy rain and this is west 25th so you can see that traffic is running pretty slow. This particular lane as always problematic and you can see the spray that is coming off. See that big splash . Very heavy rainfall and that can be slow to drain f this is only one thunderstorm. We have a number of thunderstorms that are ongoing. Any thunderstorm today will produce torrential rain. You cannot help but feel at and we have a lot of heat as well. Heat and humidity get left in the atmosphere anytime you have listing you have the potential for rain and thunder. The thunderstorms will concentrate the humidity and rates today at times for upwards of 4 in. h so if the thunderstorm sits in one area and lays down the rain it would put 4 inches of rain. That would cause flooding and that is why southern portions of Ashtabula County are under a flashlight morning. That is from earlier thunderstorms and they have the next batch coming in. We have thunderstorms firing up heads up for southern Geauga County. You have a rest of thunderstorm from cleveland and these are going to continue to move to the northeast as well. It will be a threat or heavy rain and could cause localized flooding. Burton would also be an there. Those thunderstorms are in lets go farther south the very heavy rain that is coming down. This thunderstorm has been holding its own and is not been fading so i think we are just going to have to keep an eye on it to see if this starts to get some growth. As of right now the leading s wadsworth that would cross over into madonna county. You would have to raise a red flag for places like norton and copley, fairlawn, bastion, Cuyahoga Falls and akron as that continues to move to the north. The southern flank blowdry and seville is into wadsworth and you get into Summit County unfortunately this same process that we saw today will be repeated tomorrow. I dont think we will have the dramatic shot out pictures, but certainly this heat and humidity is not going anywhere. The Bigger Picture is fighting this out, going on. This is very important because this is the cold front that will come through this weekend and as this cold front comes in it will help to focus the humidity and rain and unfortunately it is going to be slowmoving so the incredible humidity that is producing very heavy rain right now, you add a cold front that is moving slowly and we will have widespread potential for several instances already and other races of the country where they have been inundated and flash flooding has been the result and this is basically the scenario that is setting up now and for tomorrow and into the weekend. Incredible to see that shelf cloudy coming in this afternoon and it is literally going up social media. Keep in mind, clouds can look scary and it doesnt mean anything necessarily. In this case i explained the whole thing and and asked Facebook Live facebook. I explained some things and pointed out storm structure. These thunderstorms that are coming in are coming over areas that are still cleaning up from the thunderstorms we had in the past couple of days. We will have a live report essentially from the east side and in the meantime we will we are a far cry from real, they have been enjoying a great day of games. We have all of your coverage coming up through the 5 00 hour and six, seven and 11 00. The games have been very exciting. I know we have some good news for our athletes are from northeast ohio we are getting a live update from sarah in a minute. There is a live look at the olympic torch. Halfway through the first week. Cuyahoga county is bearing the brunt of this right now, some very heavy lens. We will be back with her in just a minute. The story and rio, we have not had a great batting average for our local olympians. Today we have some good news to share on that front as well and some new ti and rio. An exciting day for us as the first olympic medal winner and the taste of gold. That is always great news. Two more ohioans are on the verge. Sarah is in rio and we will have her in a moment. We will take some time out because the weather that is happening is superseding our story and rio because the radar continues to be incredibly active over the most densely populated part of our viewing right in the heart of Cuyahoga County, as we came on air we heard thunder and we saw the shelf cloud emerged. Take a look at exactly what that is. The thunderstorm is still in Cuyahoga County and the thunderstorm warning has expired and that does not mean that we dont still have a strong storm. This is a far cry what the radar has looked like. This has just fallen apart. As we go back in the last hour this is when it fired. This is in westlake, we started to get a lot of reports of trees down and that storm started to build down toward the strongsville area and Middleburg Heights and continued east through parma right through downtown cleveland and lakeville. You can see how it is falling apart somewhat. A couple of cool things to white house as this is kind of an evolving. As this falls apart you can see that we are getting a little bit of growth on the leading edge. Right here in the eastern part of the county. You can see how it begins to pop up and that is the shelf cloud. What happens is you get the cold air coming out of the thunderstorm and it raises out ahead of the thunderstorm and it becomes a mini cold front and begins lifting the air. And we get popups and thunderstorms very quickly. These are along that shelf cloud and that will continue to move out to the east. Two things to remember through the evening. Thunderstorms that we get will have torrential rain and the thunderstorms will be coming and going settling down later tonight and we get to do the whole thing all over again tomorrow. Like the hokey pokey. And it gets right at rush hour. Lets reporter it has been an exciting day here because ohio finally has a metal and guess what, it is gold. Kayla harrison i told you about her yesterday a twotime olympian. In just the last hour or so she defended her 2012 olympic judo gold and won her second gold she finished on top in four matches today and now she is getting the chance to enjoy it. I have been fighting number one for a while and i have been dealing with that pressure and at the end of the day this is what i wanted. I wanted to be number one, i wanted to be champion. The only pressure is the pressure i put on myself. Reporter we got to talk to map and he said she told him the second one was even better than the first. We will keep following this and ill send it back to you. That is the kind of news you want to work. Speak we were sitting her yesterday showing you video about the downed trees and people without power they barely had time to clean up and todays storms it. It was worse on east side of Cleveland Heights and there will be more people climbing the tree and trying to get through this. A reporter is live. Reporter we are on yellowstone road in Cleveland Heights in the middle another storm through after tuesday night the storm knocked out power. People down the street have not had power for close to 48 hours and southwest of here in parma they are feeling the effects of recent storms your dozens of fans attempting to drive things off at the School District a sewer backed up and water had no place to go but inside the building. We are told the water was 12 inches high in some parts and three quarters of the building had some kind of water damage. They are assessing and the rest of the week they will check for mold and monitor air quality. The Central Offices will be closed for the rest of the week. Employees have off tomorrow and school sign up will resume on monday. Back here in you can see behind us there are crews working to restore power and put the lines back to normal. Hopefully people will get their power back before another storm like this closed through and causes some potential damage. A lot of my friends on the west side say they are without power and have trees down crews are out there helping. Whenever this happens, betsy, during the rush hour it has a domino affect. If you are expecting to be home by 5 30 it might be a little later. Things are backing up as the storms continue to roll. There is a look at the radar and you can see this is the storm that caused all the albums and that storm has triggered more storms and when we have humidity any little bump will get the storm going and the storms that are firing are producing a lot of heavy rainfall. You can see this line that is forming alongside 71 and that will continue to move to the east and this might trigger some more storms. Areas farther to the west, this could help a little bit. Our friends at Progressive Field that are watching and hoping to get a weather update, that is the best i can tell you is there is nothing due west. Storms. Lets zoom in on eastern county. It is getting into the manner, will it be Willoughby Hills and toward chardon we will start to get some of this heavy rain. Chagrin falls you are in the line of fire. This thunderstorm that we just had it really collapsed and now you can se lightning that is holding together. That will continue to move to the east and we will have the concern for hail and high wind. I just checked first Energy Update and there are more than 48,800 customers without power just in biotech county. As the storms continue to move to the east we are trying to get it solidified. This could be a sign that it humid. Big heads up, things can get a little cantankerous and a farther east the southern part of the county is under a Flash Flood Warning from storms earlier today. Southern portions of Geauga County right along the county line we are still seen those thunderstorms up to the northeast. Farther south wurster getting rain as that move up through orville and midstill into wadsworth, deville and Summit County. This will continue to grow and intensify moving to the east. Have to point out that the big picture shows the cold front that will bring an end to this is clear out here in the plains. We have exactly the same set up for tomorrow that we had today. The exact thing will happen. Temperatures of around 90 tomorrow and rain and storms likely saturday with flooding the good news is we will try to cool and dry things next week. Time for access to tonight summer game schedule. Brought to you by ohios number one hospital Cleveland Clinic. Tonight on prime time we crown a womens does gnostics all around champion. Swimming with the finals in the mens 200 m individual meter finals. That is sure access to tonight summer game schedule. Providing you with ss the number one taher anytime thank you for being with us. We want to keep you informed and save as we have severe storms rolling through. About an hour ago we started to get the reports of very Severe Weather. We have our twitter friends who sent us some pictures. This is one of that shelf cloud rolling through rocky river. That is one a viewer sent in and you can going so wild about this and excited. You can see where that line of storms came from. We were talking about Cleveland Heights and today it is the downtown area seeing a lot of this. Folks might be heading to sure way and looking out over the lake was the most dramatic image. One of our viewers captured this from one of the high rises and this is just the first of a firing up moving from the southwest to the northeast throughout the viewing area and we look at stuff through mansfield all the way to the state line. We love to see what things look like in your backyard. You can post them on our Facebook Page or twitter account. Betsy is tracking it right now. We have over 47,000 customers without power. Lorain county is repog in this hot and humid weather that is a big concern for a lot of folks. You cant cool off very quickly. Here is the complex now and it is kind of an evolving into a bit of a complex as it moves to the east. You can see it being propelled east and as it does so we see at firing up and using the heat and humidity in the area. We also saw this line that fired in northern portage to the northeast and at that juncture where we have the outflow from the previous storm and the boundary we have a core that is forming and that would be an area that we would keep an eye on for the next round of storms as far as hail potential. You can see that the lightning is going strong. You know we will have torrential rain, also high wind gusts. That will be a big heads up fo track that for you and get zoomed in. A look at exactly where it is. You can see along to 71. We are getting this huge accumulation of lightning and that will continue to move on to the east. We will put a track on this. As this is going to continue to move to the northeast it could flooding and also the wind gusts. That will continue eastbound out toward areas around burton and the middlefield area getting and on all of that. Lets move farther to the south as we have more of these thunderstorms that are going farther to the south as well. As far as the winds go we are not seeing anything to high speed. 45 mileperhour winds up. I mentioned farther south you can see this line extends down to ridgefield and sharon township and the wadsworth, load i and into creston and wayne county. That continues to propel to the east and we are starting to see some lightning firing up. A heads up along that. Out to the west if you have coming. That will scam right across the peninsula so we could have some ride stoppage. I mentioned that all of this is just starting, more to come, moisture streams and there is a cold front to the west that will be here this weekend. That is a major concern because it will be very slowmoving and we have a lot of moisture in the air. That could be the combination to get the very heavy rainfall amounts. That would mean flooding. The forecast has us up around 90 degrees for tomorrow. We will continue with the 80s on sunday with storms in the forecast. It will be cooler and we will try to dry things out next week. The star of the show from the weather perspective was the very impressive shelf cloud that moved through downtown. We got a lot of pictures that came through on social media and of course our own employees page and it is about five minutes and that we take a look at that cloud and go through some of what it is. A lot of worry folks. We have not had any tornadoes, this is not a tornado day, but certainly this type of cloud structure gets a lot of peoples attention and you can literally see the clouds lifting into the storm as it moves and. This is the cold air coming out from the thunderstorm and that humidity to left and we have so much moisture that it keeps it in perspective and you can see it lifting and condensation taking place and that feeds into the storm and becomes a perpetual motion. As that continues to the east and the storm continues to be fed that will then cause more thunderstorms and that is exactly what we had happened here in downtown cleveland with the thunderstorms that fired up and moved through. Traffic because i think we have a lot of roads that are probably having big problems and the folks on the lake maybe they are back and. As i said, we get to do it all again tomorrow and we have to keep an eye on the weekend for greater flooding potential. That humidity it seems like the rain was inevitable. Betsy has been on it. Thank you. As you saw the west side got clobbered first. It has been breaking up as heading east. We have a live picture from the lake metroparks. You can see where that shelf cloud it has been breaking u
