the pension backlash. the growing anger over sheila dixon's gen rouse pension -- generous pension. what the next mayor is saying and the pushing reform. >> here's what people are talking about this noon. in just a few hours, a protest is expected at city hall, over the outgoing mayor's pension. and even the mayor-to-be, stephanie rawlings-blake is pushing reform. mike hellgren is following this controversy for us. good afternoon, mike. >> reporter: good afternoon, don. good afternoon, everybody. i just caught up with ms. rawlings-blake who reiterated what she said yesterday that she is looking into reform and has many doing the same. many are wondering why mayor dixon gets to keep her pension. that's because she is doing something that will give her no criminal record in the future. and that's why she gets to keep it. many believe it's not right. >> soon to life to- -- soon-to- be mayor stephanie rawlings- blake is looking into the controversy. >> i am looking at the legislation, as well as our pensions for elected officials. i think the nature of this transition lends itself to that type of examination. >> reporter: there's been outrage over dixon getting to keep her pension, valued at more than $80,000 a year. despite an alfred plea on perjury charges, and a guilty verdict against her on embezzling gift cards meant for the needy. >> everything about this process is awkward. >> reporter: a group started on facebook is planning a protest at city hall tonight at 4:00, part of the backlash over the pension deal. it also brought to light concern over the city's ethics law. it says that dixon failed to report expensive gifts that she received from developer ron lipscomb while she was voting on his project. the prosecutor said that his investigation was meant to send a message to all elected officials. >> politicians don't get the message that if you commit a wrong, you will lose your job and lose quite a few perks. there is nothing i can do about that. i would hope it would send the message. >> reporter: of course, one perk mayor dixon will not lose is her pension. the facebook group now has 1400 members. we'll see what the turnout is for their rotest in just -- protest in just a few hours. reporting live, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> should be interesting. stay with wjz for complete coverage of the transition at city hall. and remember, wjz is always on. for constant updates and the complete background on this story, go to wjz.com. right now, police are asking for information about a deadly hit-and-run on the beltway near catonsville. police say the truck broke down on the beltway. someone pulled over to check it out. a black honda accord struck and killed him but did not stop. police need help tracking that driver and the damaged car. anyone with information is asked to call. amtrak train strikes and kills a baltimore county teenager. ann marie fickle was killed. her mother says those tracks were frequently eis used by other people. [ audio breaking up ] >> reporter: flight 1669 was pushing back from the gate in milwaukee when the pilot told passengers, there was a security problem. a gun dealer on board had alerted flight attendants, he had mistakenly carried on live ammunition. >> scnt give you a warm and fuzzy feeling. >> reporter: the passenger says the dallas-bound jet immediately returned to the gate. the unidentified passenger told the transportation security agency he had forgotten that he had shotgun shells in his carry- on. he was rescreened ask then allowed to reboard the plane, which took off for dallas. the security breach comes on the heels of umar farouq abdulmutallab's indictment in the airline bound for detroit on christmas day. >> we just had a gentleman with explosive in his underwear two weeks ago from detroit. and they were supposed to up the security. and here a guy walks in with shotgun shells in his carry- ons. >> reporter: hehad texted his concern to his wife before he boarded the plane. >> i was like, you have got to be joking me. >> they are investigating how they got past the security. and midwest airlines has declined to comment. after the bombing attempt on christmas day, president obama ordered enhanced screening and more bomb-sniffing dogs at airport. but the security breach in milwaukee has passengers wondering what it will really take to secure the nation's airports. karen brown, wjz eyewitness news. >> the tsa says the bag containing the ammunition did go through an x-ray machine and is investigating why the shells were not detected. local lawmakers are being urged to make safety changes. anna marie sickle was killed on january 5th, when she took a shortcut to school across the tracks. her mother says those tracks are frequently used by others. she's now asking lawmakers to build a new bridge, called anna's bridge, giving students a safe place to cross. the request was made in the form of a letter to congressman dutch ruppersberger. and a possible third wave of the h1n1 virus. maryland is watching national influenza vaccination week this week. part of the effort to vaccinate everyone. officials are urging the possible not to become complacent, even though the number of cases has dropped. they're renewing their advice that everyone should get the vaccine. yet another cold day. but not quite as frigid as it has been. take a a little bit out there. because the winds are back up again today. clouds also in place. that's because a cold front went through. there were showers with that cold front. now pushing out to the southeast. clouds breaking up a little off to the north. we will see some sunshine mix in as we head through the afternoon here. with the storm going through, i want to show you out west, we have a winter weather advisory in effect. just a sliver here in allegheny county. it's going to be a few inches of snow piling up on the northwest wind. temperature-wise, 30 degrees right now in baltimore. you can see it's 28 in cumberland. 33 to the ocean. and when you factor in that wind, it feels like it's in the teens. cold air is still in place at least for now. after we get through today, we're going to see a warmup kicking in. so we're getting rid of this front right now. then high pressure will build in. it's going to settle in everything down there. you can see everything going on in the mountains at this point. we'll see more sunshine coming along with this high pressure. here's how it comes along from the front. since it's coming from the west not the north, it is going to bring milder air with it. you also notice a front passing by to the nort. this -- north. temperatures are going up the next few days. over the weekend, though, they will start to come back down, however not to the point that we've seen them recently. the forecast comes together like this. out on the waters, bay temp, about 35 degrees. we have a small craft advisory in effect. today, brisk and chilly, getting up to 36 degrees. that's about it. some sunshine mixing through though this afternoon into tonight. clearing down to 20. tomorrow, up to 40. now, the average temperature is 41. we're going to be close to maybe still slightly below average tomorrow. but we're going above it the next few days. we'll have your five-day coming up. it is going to feel like 60. >> it is going to feel amazing. procedure is in place to protect patients from spine injuries, of course. but researchers say it could actually put patients at twice of risk of dying, compared to those who are rushed immediately to the hospital with no brace. the study found fewer than one patient in a thousand reportedly benefits from being immobilized. the institute of medicine wants to put public health officials on hepatitis b and c. the viruses affect up to five times as many as a.i.d.s. and in the next jeer will kill up to 150,000 people in the u.s. alone. the institute is calling for better screening, education and research, as well as wider use of the hepatitis b vaccine. and researchers say they found a genetic mutation that helps predict which men will get aggressive prostate cancer. men with the genetic
