>> as one of the most successful writers of military and political the thrillers of all time, tom clancy kept readers on the edge of their seats. news of his death at just 66 years old, has shocked fans. >> it's a huge fan base, especially male readers reader of action and techno, they're going to be feeling a sense of sadness. >> reporter: clancy became a minor owner in the orioles. >> when i get involved in something, i get involved in it. that's my team there. i have to go and watch and make sure they do everything right. >> tom, a proud baltimorean was a devoted marylander, treasured friend, and valued partner and adviser in the orioles ownership group. we are deeply saddened by tom's passing. he will be missed but long remembered. tom clancy was born in baltimore, attended loyola blakefield. >> what an honor for us to have this literary icon also be called a loyola don. >> and then commencement speaker at loyola college in 1986. clancy was a former insurance agent, who went on to write 28 novels. >> the whole point is to get people to think. >> reporter: clancy's books were turned into hollywood blockbuster films, including "the hunt for red october." clancy also made his mark in the video game world, like ghost recon. and well before that, politika, the board game, novel. he said it was the project he was most proud of. what we're trying to do here has never been done before. it's completely new. >> all of this made clancy a very wealthy man, but he lived very private. he lived on the ritz carlton, comin booing six condos into one. and he continued to write. his latest novel, planned authority, is planned for release december 3rd. and the newest jack ryan movie is scheduled for release on christmas. denise? >> thank you very much, mary. clancy was involved in several charities in baltimore, including raising millions for johns hopkins pediatric oncology. it's day 2 of the government shutdown. and there appears to be no end in site. more on how it's affecting the u.s. naval academy and annapolis. but first, we go to danielle nottingham. with more on how lawmakers are trying to break the impasse. >> reporter: president obama called congressional leaders to the white house on day 2 of the partial government shutdown, to to look for a way to end it. >> i think it's important that he listen to what mcconnell and boehner have to say. he knows how pelosi and i feel. >> reporter: on capitol hill, the battle over legislation to fund the government and the blame game continues. >> president obama and harry reid think that this shutdown is the best thing that ever happened to them politically. >> reporter: we in this house must end this shutdown. >> reporter: democrats want a spending bill without any strings attached. republicans want a delay in the president's health care law to be part of the deal. >> reporter: hundreds of thousands of federal workers spent another day at home without pay. the director of national intelligence told lawmakers that includes about 70% of his civilian work force. >> this is extremely damaging. and it will increase so as this shutdown drags on. >> reporter: director clapper says employees not receiving a paycheck are prime targets for foreign governments wanting to gain state secrets. on capitol hill, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> there's been much made of the closing of the world war ii memorial in washington, as veterans travel to visit it. the president of the republican committee announced it would pay to keep that monument open for the next 30 days. wjz live at navy marine corps stadium in annapolis. derek valcourt with more on how the shutdown may force the cancellation of the highly anticipated navy-air force game. >> reporter: online rumors were flying all day that the game was, in fact, a go for saturday. navy officials say that is not the case. those rumors were not true. they say the decision was not made yet. but the decision should be made by noon tomorrow. >> reporter: tents are already going up outside of navy marine memorial stadium. even though the state -- fate of the game hangs in limbo, no one more surprised than the players. >> that would be crushing i mean, it's a huge game we all look forward to very much. >> i watched the video of how it would affect you. and i never thought it would get anywhere near football. >> reporter: it's not just football or any navy sport. the entire naval academy, already impacted by the shutdown, with 930 civilian faculty and staff already furloughed. classes where military instructors aren't able to substitute have been canceled. >> some of us showed up and studied. others were told not to go to class. >> reporter: tickets to saturday's big game have sold out more than 40,000 people expected here in this stadium. thousands of them coming from out of town. and that means a lot to the local economy here in annapolis. >> reporter: hotels and restaurants, like bella italian near the stadium, were banking on the business, arranging to be fully staffed for what they anticipate would be huge crowds before and after the game. >> if they don't play, we lose a lot. >> for now, all the team can do is wait and practice and see if the show will go on. >> at this point, they say it's not going to happen. we gotta prepare. >> a lot of folks at the naval academy waiting for that decision if the game does not happen on saturday, officials are looking at the possibility that they can reschedule it by december 7th. in annapolis, derek valcourt. >> going to be a lot of disappointed people. complete coverage of the shutdown. we'll bring you the latest on the impact here in maryland. more breaking news. this time out of tennessee, where a bus and tractor trailer collide, leaving eight people dead. linh bui is in the newsroom with the latest on this crash. >> the crash involved a bus, tractor-trailer and suv. according to the department of home land security, the charter bus crossed the median, clipping an oncoming suv and hitting the tractor-trailer, which then burst into flames. the bus, which was heading eastbound flipped over. in all, 14 people were hurt. denise? >> thank you, linh. the cause of this crash is under investigation. just moments ago, baltimore city police announce a new public enemy number 1. christopher goode is wanted for attempted murder and domestic violence. last month, goode stabbed the mother of his child 12 times in the neck. the mother did survive. goode is believed to be in south baltimore and is considered armed and extremely dangerous. anyone with information on goode is asked to call city police. >> and still more breaking news to tell you about. a jury has reached a verdict in the wrongful death trial of michael jackson. the verdict is expected to be in court next half hour. sued concert promoter, aeg, saying the company hired dr. conrad murray, the man convicted in jackson's death and that makes the company responsible. aeg contends jackson hired murray himself. we will bring you the verdict as soon as it is announced. a $189 million mega million jackpot. and the only ticket sold is here -- winning ticket was sold here in maryland. christie ileto has more. >> reporter: the winner has yet to come forward to claim his or her prize. while we have a mystery winner, it's no mystery, where this winning ticket was sold. hundreds of thousands of tickets printed. but only one ticket is a winner wednesday. maryland loty officials say it sold at a dash inn. >> this is not the first time someone saw this. i am so excited to see who won the lottery. >> reporter: the store gets money for selling the winning ticket. >> when you found out this was the store that sold the winning ticket. what ran through your mind? >> reporter: that man actually told officials he also had a detonator. all of that turned out not to be true. >> reporter: tense moments at the jacksonville airport, after 39-year-old gelto cosavix claims to have a bomb. >> he didn't claim to have security. and one of the tsa agents asked him to come back and check in. and he didn't want to do that. >> reporter: within minutes, authorities had the man in custody, as the bomb disawd moved -- squad moved in to having. >> it they did a device that was rendered to be safe. >> reporter: two suspicious packages were found. neither of them explosives. cosavick is now charged with making a frawls report about -- false report about planting a bomb and presenting a hoax bomb. but no one is laughing. >> they are stuck in the planes. and they moved further and further away from the airport. >> reporter: passengers are immediately evacuated from the airport and taken to a nearby hotel as an aggressive sweep was conducted. >> passed us until about 11:00 last night. >> reporter: little is known about cosavick, a u.s. citizen, from bosnia. and leaving hundreds of passengers to wait. >> reporter: and the jacksonville international airport is back open. flightsflights from jacksonville to baltimore came in with no problem. i'm rochelle ritchie, live tonight. wjz eyewitness news. >> rochelle, thank you. as of right now, the fbi is still investigating. some more breaking news out of anne arundel county, at this hour. a car has gone into a home in glen burnie. captain jeff long is in sky eye chopper 13 over the scene. captain jeff? talking about tonight. motorcycle mayhem. caught on tape video. the caught on tape video is frightening. and one of the people arrested in the violent attack appeared in court in manhattan. alison harmelin reports. >> reporter: 28-year-old christopher cruz was charged with rec little driving -- reckless driving. >> my client had nothing to do with this gentleman. and he does not know the people who beat this gentleman up. >> reporter: another biker recorded the incident on his helmet camera and posted it on the internet. police say cruz purposely slowed down in front of range rofer ver, causing it to clip his bike. >> i wouldn't say that he purposely did it. >> reporter: the driver hit the gas and mowed down another driver -- biker, breaking both of his legs and possibly paralyzing him. after a two-mile chase, police say several bikers sparked the -- smashed the window was of the suv and slashed at the driver. his wife and 2-year-old daughter were notjured. >> reporter: police were prepared that the motorcycle gang might show up here at the courthouse to support cruz. but only his mother and girlfriend showed up at his arraignment. >> reporter: prosecutors decided not to charge another person seen punching the windows of the suv. the biker suicide is said to be cooperating in the investigation. riders blocked traffic so they could perform stunts. police say on the day of the attack, they received more than 200 calls about the bikers driving recklessly. alison harmelin, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, the driver of the suv did need some stitches. he has not been charged. no new trial. an appeals court turns down form penn state coach jerry sandusky. >> the supreme court is the next and final chance for sandusky. an appeals panel volted famsly -- voted unanimously today, that sandusky doesn't deserve a gnaw trial, after being convicted of sexually abusing 10 boys. sandusky argued his attorneys didn't have enough time to prepare for the trial and that the judge made an error in instructing the jury. >> sandusky's attorney said he plans to file for supreme court view. new details tonight about the massacre at a mall in kenya that left 67 people dead. unreleased surveillance video shows four armed surveillance videos at the attack. two more were found under the rubble last night. the terrorist group said there will be more violence, unless or tomorrow. people have time. right now, there's lots of unexpected bottlenecks and delays. >> reporter: the maryland health connection saw 1,000 hits a minute at times when it went online yesterday. >> reporter: tried to correct those glitches, combined with the fact that people will realize they have six months to sign up, is expected to make the whole process go smoother in the next couple of school is under investigation tonight. sky eye chopper 13 was over the scene at catonsville high school. the school principal says an adult male tried to lure a female student into the woods on bloomberry avenue. officials say the girl ran towards an apartment complex. she did get away. today, counselors and teachers talked with students about the incident. anne arundel county police released new images they hope can help them catch a robber, who hit the same bank twice in a month. in one of the robberies, the female suspect fled in this four-door black sedan. police say she held up the bank of glen burnie on september 13th, and then again the 28th. both times, she got away with cash. anyone with information is asked to call police. time now for a quick look at the baltimore fix it up pretty soon. >> expensive trip for nothing. >> reporter: with tourists being turned away from the capital, some are expecting a boost in visitors. >> see if they can explore something different with all of the facilities shut down in d.c. >> reporter: jane valentine says she's been inundated with calls from schools in maryland, virginia and other states that planned on going to the national zoo but are coming to the baltimore zoo snead instead. >> rather than cancel the trips, they're looking for another venue. >> reporter: the zoo is already seeing a boost in visitors because of all of the federal workers out of work. >> fun because i get to spend the day at the zoo. but the lack of pay may not be fun. so hopefully we get batock back to work soon. >> i needed to get away from the tv. i've been watching it nonstop. and it's just too much. >> reporter: too soon to tell how many people may head north because of the shutdown. but with u law makers going -- with lawmakers [ pop ] a frightening chain reaction accident, involving a school bus and two trucks is under investigation in washington state. brtion are. >> reporter: . >> reporter: state troopers say one bus driver bumped into a pickup truck in tacoma, then rear-ended another bus. there were no children on board and no one was hurt. the female bus driver was ticketed for negative bus driving. investigating whether she was wearing her seat belt properly. in tonight's wjz healthwatch other a new study shows many intensive care patients who survived the life- threatening illness may leave the hospital with problems similar to alzheim are's. marlie hall reports for wjz. >> at just 46, lisa uribe struggles with her memory. her problem started with a long stay in intensive care after developing sepsis. >> being lost. being somewhere and not knowing why they're there. >> reporter: research shows many patients like lisa, with memory problems with leave the hospital with long-term cognitive impairment. researchers looked at long-term icu patients. they found 34% made nem more likely to end up in the hospital. >> what nobody has shown before is that 32 our r out of four people are leaving the hospital with profound impairment that looked a lot like alzheimer's disease or traumatic brain injury. >> delirium is common for patients who are confused or critically ill. they suggest a change in icu care, including weaning off sedatives earlier. >> have patients more alert in the icu and walking. >> it's been a year and a half for lisa. >> the hardest part forever me is having expectations on myself. every day, i wake up, thinking this is the gay day i'm going to about being -- this is the day i'm going to go back to my normal life. >> reporter: in new york, marlie hall, wjz eyewitness news. >> doctors are recommending cognitive rehabilitation for lisa. and they've prescribed a drug to treat alzheimer's disease, to keep what brain function she has. an ancient discovery is made underground in central london. check this out. workers found about 20 of these romany skulls. more than 10,000 ark logical fighters have been found. i wonder how they know they're roman? >> as one of the most successful writers of military and political the thrillers of all time, tom clancy kept readers on the edge of their seats. news of his death at just 66 years old, has shocked fans. >> it's a huge fan base, especially male readers reader of action and techno, they're going to be feeling a sense of sadness. >> reporter: clancy became a minor owner in the orioles. >> when i get involved in something, i get involved in it. that's my team there. i have to go and watch and make sure they do everything right. >> tom, a proud baltimorean was a devoted marylander, treasured friend, and valued partner and adviser in the orioles ownership group. we are deeply saddened by tom's passing. he will be missed but long remembered. tom clancy was born in baltimore, attended loyola blakefield. >> what an honor for us to have this literary icon also be called a loyola don. >> and then commencement speaker at loyola college in 1986. clancy was a former insurance agent, who went on to write 28 novels. >> the whole point is to get people to think. >> reporter: clancy's books were turned into hollywood blockbuster films, including "the hunt for red october." clancy also made his mark in the video game world, like ghost recon. and well before that, politika, the board game, novel. he said it was the project he was most proud of. what we're trying to do here has never been done before. it's completely new. >> all of this made clancy a very wealthy man, but he lived very private. he lived on the ritz carlton, comin booing six condos into one. and he continued to write. his latest novel, planned authority, is planned for release december 3rd. and the newest jack ryan movie is scheduled for release on christmas. denise? >> thank you very much, mary. clancy was involved in several charities in baltimore, including raising millions for johns hopkins pediatric oncology. it's day 2 of the government shutdown. and there appears to be no end in site. more on how it's affecting the u.s. naval academy and annapolis. but first, we go to danielle nottingham. with more on how lawmakers are trying to break the impasse. >> reporter: president obama called congressional leaders to the white house on day 2 of the partial government shutdown, to to look for a way to end it. >> i think it's important that he listen to what mcconnell and boehner have to say. he knows how pelosi and i feel. >> reporter: on capitol hill, the battle over legislation to fund the government and the blame game continues. >> president obama and harry reid think that this shutdown is the best thing that ever happened to them politically. >> reporter: we in this house must end this shutdown. >> reporter: democrats want a spending bill without any strings attached. republicans want a delay in the president's health care law to be part of the deal. >> reporter: hundreds of thousands of federal workers spent another day at home without pay. the director of national intelligence told lawmakers that includes about 70% of his civilian work force. >> this is extremely damaging. and it will increase so as this shutdown drags on. >> reporter: director clapper says employees not receiving a paycheck are prime targets for foreign governments wanting to gain state secrets. on capitol hill, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> there's been much made of the closing of the world war ii memorial in washington, as veterans travel to visit it. the president of the republican committee announced it would pay to keep that monument open for the next 30 days. wjz live at navy marine corps stadium in annapolis. derek valcourt with more on how the shutdown may force the cancellation of the highly anticipated navy-air force game. >> reporter: online rumors were flying all day that the game was, in fact, a go for saturday. navy officials say that is not the case. those rumors were not true. they say the decision was not made yet. but the decision should be made by noon tomorrow. >> reporter: tents are already going up outside of navy marine memorial stadium. even though the state -- fate of the game hangs in limbo, no one more surprised than the players. >> that would be crushing i mean, it's a huge game we all look forward to very much. >> i watched the video of how it would affect you. and i never thought it would get anywhere near football. >> reporter: it's not just football or any navy sport. the entire naval academy, already impacted by the shutdown, with 930 civilian faculty and staff already furloughed. classes where military instructors aren't able to substitute have been canceled. >> some of us showed up and studied. others were told not to go to class. >> reporter: tickets to saturday's big game have sold out more than 40,000 people expected here in this stadium. thousands of them coming from out of town. and that means a lot to the local economy here in annapolis. >> reporter: hotels and restaurants, like bella italian near the stadium, were banking on the business, arranging to be fully staffed for what they anticipate would be huge crowds before and after the game. >> if they don't play, we lose a lot. >> for now, all the team can do is wait and practice and see if the show will go on. >> at this point, they say it's not going to happen. we gotta prepare. >> a lot of folks at the naval academy waiting for that decision if the game does not happen on saturday, officials are looking at the possibility that they can reschedule it by december 7th. in annapolis, derek valcourt. >> going to be a lot of disappointed people. complete coverage of the shutdown. we'll bring you the latest on the impact here in maryland. more breaking news. this time out of tennessee, where a bus and tractor trailer collide, leaving eight people dead. linh bui is in the newsroom with the latest on this crash. >> the crash involved a bus, tractor-trailer and suv. according to the department of home land security, the charter bus crossed the median, clipping an oncoming suv and hitting the tractor-trailer, which then burst into flames. the bus, which was heading eastbound flipped over. in all, 14 people were hurt. denise? >> thank you, linh. the cause of this crash is under investigation. just moments ago, baltimore city police announce a new public enemy number 1. christopher goode is wanted for attempted murder and domestic violence. last month, goode stabbed the mother of his child 12 times in the neck. the mother did survive. goode is believed to be in south baltimore and is considered armed and extremely dangerous. anyone with information on goode is asked to call city police. >> and still more breaking news to tell you about. a jury has reached a verdict in the wrongful death trial of michael jackson. the verdict is expected to be in court next half hour. sued concert promoter, aeg, saying the company hired dr. conrad murray, the man convicted in jackson's death and that makes the company responsible. aeg contends jackson hired murray himself. we will bring you the verdict as soon as it is announced. a $189 million mega million jackpot. and the only ticket sold is here -- winning ticket was sold here in maryland. christie ileto has more. >> reporter: the winner has yet to come forward to claim his or her prize. while we have a mystery winner, it's no mystery, where this winning ticket was sold. hundreds of thousands of tickets printed. but only one ticket is a winner wednesday. maryland loty officials say it sold at a dash inn. >> this is not the first time someone saw this. i am so excited to see who won the lottery. >> reporter: the store gets money for selling the winning ticket. >> when you found out this was the store that sold the winning ticket. what ran through your mind? >> reporter: that man actually told officials he also had a detonator. all of that turned out not to be true. >> reporter: tense moments at the jacksonville airport, after 39-year-old gelto cosavix claims to have a bomb. >> he didn't claim to have security. and one of the tsa agents asked him to come back and check in. and he didn't want to do that. >> reporter: within minutes, authorities had the man in custody, as the bomb disawd moved -- squad moved in to having. >> it they did a device that was rendered to be safe. >> reporter: two suspicious packages were found. neither of them explosives. cosavick is now charged with making a frawls report about -- false report about planting a bomb and presenting a hoax bomb. but no one is laughing. >> they are stuck in the planes. and they moved further and further away from the airport. >> reporter: passengers are immediately evacuated from the airport and taken to a nearby hotel as an aggressive sweep was conducted. >> passed us until about 11:00 last night. >> reporter: little is known about cosavick, a u.s. citizen, from bosnia. and leaving hundreds of passengers to wait. >> reporter: and the jacksonville international airport is back open. flightsflights from jacksonville to baltimore came in with no problem. i'm rochelle ritchie, live tonight. wjz eyewitness news. >> rochelle, thank you. as of right now, the fbi is still investigating. some more breaking news out of anne arundel county, at this hour. a car has gone into a home in glen burnie. captain jeff long is in sky eye chopper 13 over the scene. captain jeff? talking about tonight. motorcycle mayhem. caught on tape video. the caught on tape video is frightening. and one of the people arrested in the violent attack appeared in court in manhattan. alison harmelin reports. >> reporter: 28-year-old christopher cruz was charged with rec little driving -- reckless driving. >> my client had nothing to do with this gentleman. and he does not know the people who beat this gentleman up. >> reporter: another biker recorded the incident on his helmet camera and posted it on the internet. police say cruz purposely slowed down in front of range rofer ver, causing it to clip his bike. >> i wouldn't say that he purposely did it. >> reporter: the driver hit the gas and mowed down another driver -- biker, breaking both of his legs and possibly paralyzing him. after a two-mile chase, police say several bikers sparked the -- smashed the window was of the suv and slashed at the driver. his wife and 2-year-old daughter were notjured. >> reporter: police were prepared that the motorcycle gang might show up here at the courthouse to support cruz. but only his mother and girlfriend showed up at his arraignment. >> reporter: prosecutors decided not to charge another person seen punching the windows of the suv. the biker suicide is said to be cooperating in the investigation. riders blocked traffic so they could perform stunts. police say on the day of the attack, they received more than 200 calls about the bikers driving recklessly. alison harmelin, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, the driver of the suv did need some stitches. he has not been charged. no new trial. an appeals court turns down form penn state coach jerry sandusky. >> the supreme court is the next and final chance for sandusky. an appeals panel volted famsly -- voted unanimously today, that sandusky doesn't deserve a gnaw trial, after being convicted of sexually abusing 10 boys. sandusky argued his attorneys didn't have enough time to prepare for the trial and that the judge made an error in instructing the jury. >> sandusky's attorney said he plans to file for supreme court view. new details tonight about the massacre at a mall in kenya that left 67 people dead. unreleased surveillance video shows four armed surveillance videos at the attack. two more were found under the rubble last night. the terrorist group said there will be more violence, unless kenya removes its troops from somalia. healthcare website are still seeing delays. political reporter pat warren. >> it appears that maryland's website is a victim of its own success. >> reporter: all >> reporter: tried to correct those glitches, combined with the fact that people will realize they have six months to sign up, is expected to make the whole process go smoother in the next couple of school is under investigation tonight. sky eye chopper 13 was over the scene at catonsville high school. the school principal says an adult male tried to lure a female student into the woods on bloomberry avenue. officials say the girl ran towards an apartment complex. she did get away. today, counselors and teachers talked with students about the incident. anne arundel county police released new images they hope can help them catch a robber, who hit the same bank twice in a month. in one of the robberies, the female suspect fled in this four-door black sedan. police say she held up the bank of glen burnie on september 13th, and then again the 28th. both times, she got away with cash. anyone with information is asked to call police. time now for a quick look at the baltimore national zoo but are coming to the baltimore zoo snead instead. >> rather than cancel the trips, they're looking for another venue. >> reporter: the zoo is already seeing a boost in visitors because of all of the federal workers out of work. >> fun because i get to spend the day at the zoo. but the lack of pay may not be fun. so hopefully we get batock back to work soon. >> i needed to get away
