Officers witnessed some sort of criminal activity. They attempted to stop the vehicle. The vehicle did not yield to the officers. As the honda accord fled from police, it broadsided the jeep at northern parkway. Reporter the collision had back in this intersection. The force of the impact was so severe, it sent both vehicles, flying down this slope, where they came to rest. Reporter wjz spoke with paul black, who watched and recorded rescue crews, pulling the woman out. Jeeps passenger seat. She died are as died issue as did two men in the honda accord. They fell like right here. He was dazed. He didnt know what was going on. Reporter police now trying to determine if their undercover officers were chase a suspect in violation of the departments restrictive pursuit policy. We have a lot of questions right now. And unfortunately, we have more questions than answers. Were told the driver of that jeep is in critical condition. Police have not released the names of the three victims who died in the crash. Causing backups and delays. Trying to update the breaking news we have been following. Rescue efforts continue right now, after a trench collapsed. Meghan mccorkell joins us with the developing situation by phone. Denise, more and more rescue workers continue to arrive here on the scene, where i man has been caught in a trench since about 3 10 this afternoon. This happened on eagles head drive on new market. Near lake linganore. For people familiar with the intersection. Again, it happened around 3 10 this arch. This afternoon. A construction worker got trapped in a trench filled with water and mud. Were told that his legs and feet are trapped in that mud. His upper body appears to be out of the mud. At this point, rescue workers are still trying to secure the ground around him. We know that Frederick County, Howard County, and montgomery county, rescue crews have all been called in here to the scene. At this point, we do not know the condition of the man that was trapped. Officials are telling us that this is going to be a prolonged rescue effort. I just got through to one firefighter. He told me this is going to be a very long night. Were learning more about how the Washington Navy yard shooter was able to get a secret level security clearance, despite several brushes with the law. Mary is in the newsroom with more on this. They say he is wanted in connection with a shooting on liberty high in woodlawn. He is also facing charges of assault and using a firearm during a felony crime. If you have any information about his location, youre asked to contact Baltimore County police. It is official, Maryland Attorney general doug gansler announces his candidacy for governor. There are new development negligence the harassment suit against former Anne Arundel County executive john leopold. Wjz has learned, the county has agreed to settle with leopolds former assistant. Wjz is live. Monique griego has more on how much is being paid out. Monique . Reporter well, denise, back in january, leopold was convicted in a criminal case against him. The civil case was still pending. But now the county has agreed to pay more than 100,000 to his accuser. Reporter 8 months after being found guilty of criminal charges, a harassment suit against form Anne Arundel County executive john leopold is coming to an end. It has been very difficult. It has been very emotional. Its been a very long, hard battle. Reporter karla hamner, leopolds former assistant today reached a settlement, in which the county will pay her 110,000, plus her legal fees. In her suit, she accuses leopold of making unwanted sexual advances, saying when she complained, she was fired and prevented from getting another job with the county. Really, theres no amount of money that you can attach on what ive been through to make everything okay. Reporter in january, a judge found leopold qualitiy of misconduct. He resigned from office and spent 30 days in jail. In both the civil and criminal cases, former employees called leopolds office a toxic environment. It was terrifying. And after a while, it was so demeaning that it was almost intolerable. The way he treated women in the office. Reporter wjz tried to contact leopold but were only able to reach his attorney, who said they were appealing his conviction. Laura newman said, we are pleased that this case has been resolved and we can put it behind us. Reporter and despite what hamner said she had to go through, she does not regret coming forward. Its been worth it to see the truth come out about someone who was so corrupt and so took advantage of people. Now, the county is responsible for paying out the entire settlement. Because leopold was a county employee at the time. Monique griego, wjz Eyewitness News. Leopold has filed an appeal against his criminal conviction and has said he would like to run for office again. His attorney told wjz the appeals hearing is set for january. Also in Anne Arundel County, police are looking for the suspects who opened fire on a house. It happened last night in the 600 block of cad bury drive in odenton. Police say the suspects fired shots through the front window. A man, his wife, and three Young Children were inside at the time. Although they were not hit by bullets, glass did cut one of the children. Witnesses saw a red, Ford Crown Victoria flee the scene. Anyone with information is asked to call police. 10 middle schools in Baltimore County received a lifesaving donation. It comes in a small, red box. But for a student athlete, it is a big help, if something goes wrong with their heart. Reporter each year, 3,000 young people, mainly student athletes die from sudden cardiac arrest. The deaths most often happen during rigorous physical activity. And there are usually no symptoms. And it is likely genetic. Just because youre young, healthy, a twosport athlete, does not mean you dont have a heart condition. You could have a heart condition. Reporter doctors and leaders spoke with students today at dunbar, as they announced the donation of automated external defibrillators, to 10 Baltimore City middle schools. The israel and molly Myers Foundation gave 10,000 to fund the a. E. D. Donation. We hope the defibrillators will never need to be used. At the same time, we are secure in knowing they will be available on site if needed. Reporter hopkins calls its initiative, heart heights. And so far, more than 1,000 young people have been looked at by hopkins. Several needed immediate medical attention. Others needed to be monitored. Now, the defibrillators, which shock the heart back to normal rhythm will be there. Because its impossible to screen everyone. And it will be available to those on the sidelines, too. Its really there not so much for you. Its for your parents that get hyper watching the game. [ laughter ] and last year, an a. E. D. Was used on a high school ref. Most city high schools have them. So well probably come up a little bit tonight. Just slightly warmer than we were yesterday. Right now, at 72, bel air. Only 67 annapolis, kent island, and rock hall. Right there on the water as well. At 68 degrees. We have a light, northwest winds. Tomorrow, the wins a little more north northeast. Just dry, beautiful weather conditions. All up and down the east coast. The only exception right now is central and southern florida. A lot of shower and thunderstorm activity. Some spots have picked up 3 to 4 inches of rain. Theres been flooding around the tampa area. And south of tampa, along the western sections of florida. Southwest florida. Still having heavy, heavy rain down there. Some areas could still see more of these thunderstorms. This is not particularly typical. Theres a front moving through the area there. Thats kind of stalled out. Dryer air to the north. Warm, humid, trap cal to the south. Thats creating all of that rain down there. Naples picked up heavy rain. Will be more north of the region. West of us, a little line of clouds. Most is going to dissipate. We want to update the breaking news that wjz has been following all evening. Were learning more about a major development, following a trench collapse. Megan america kochle is Meghan Mccorkell is live at the scene and joins us now. Reporter just moments ago, rescue workers were able to rescue that man who had been trapped in the trench for more than three hours tonight. We have learned that that man is a 49yearold man from pennsylvania. He was working on a mumisin this case municipalurt water main. Municipal water main. He got trapped in that water as it was filling up and filling up. At one point, rescue officials tell me that water reached his chin. Thats how high the water was on him in this trench. This all happened in the eagle head road market. First call went out about 3 10 p. M. This afternoon. Rescue workers had to come in here. They needed the Water Company to come in and shut off the water lines to this area so the water would stop filling up the trench. Then they spent the rest of the time, just trying to shore up the ground around that man, to try to pull him out. And again, minutes ago, that 49 yearold man was pulled out of the trench. Were told that he was speaking with rescuers at the time. We know Frederick County, Howard County and montgomery county, all sent out rescue teams to try to help in the effort. I just spoke to the Frederick County fire chief a moment ago. He tells me she is very relieved and very proud of rescue workers on scene who had to work quickly to free that man. Again, he was loaded into an ambulance, moments ago. That ambulance has just left the scene in the past minute or two. Well be following this developing story. But the fate of a number of hostages remains unclear. Hundreds have already been injured and dozens have died, including a Johns Hopkins graduate, living in kenya. Rochelle ritchie reports, she and her boyfriend were shot dead. We now know that the woman was 8 months pregnant at the time of her murder. She graduated from Johns Hopkins university in 2004. And today, friends are speaking out on her death. Reporter gunshots echoed throughout the Westgate Mall in nairobi kenya, sending hundreds running for their lives. In the mall, 33yearold elias and her boyfriend. She was 8 months pregnant. She graduated from johns help kins university in 2004. And deditated dedicated her life to improving the lives of others. Today, president clinton acknowledged her work for the clinton foundation. I hope they can be a metaphor for what were all about and i ask you to remember them and their families. After finishing their european studies, she later earned a doctorate. I think it was very shocking. I think that was the word in a lot of emails that were exchanged. Reporter her husband was also devoted to making peoples lives better. He developed a hospital in east afric apro bono. Yavoos was expected to deliver in just two weeks. Security forces were going through the mall and had not definitively cleared all the rooms inside. A terrifying death. Autopsy results showed that the motor of a kidnapped teen suffered before being left in a burning home mary has more on how the teenager died. The autopsy report containing the grisly details. There will be duct tape around her neck and over her mouth. Her right arm. And both of her letion were broken. Her killer, James Dimaggio dimaggio kidnapped her son hannah. Back to you, denise. Or byod. And it allows students to choose their own technology while learning in the classroom. Reporter it might sound like a traditional spanish class, but the way hannah gonzalezs students are learning the language is anything but. Student smart phones, laptops and tablets are now allowed to be used in some classrooms. In spanish class, its helped me with words that i may not know how to pronounce. Or finding words that we havent learned yet. Reporter mount hebron high is one of the three schools piloted for the bring your own device program. They can do it with what works for their style. With the technology they have. Reporter what happen fist a student doesnt have a smart phone or tablet . Well, staff say that no student is left out. I really kind of harness partners. So you and your partner can get out a cell phone and use it for this purpose. I can always get three or four lap tops from the mobile lab that they can use as well. Principal scott rule says students have to sign an acceptable use policy. And if the devices are used inappropriately or disrupts class, it could mean a retchication of use privileges or disciplinary action. Is a trust. And we trust them to use it properly. And we give them guidelines. Reporter and that honor system of sorts allows students to stay plugged in. Reporter and the cell phone policy has also been changed, allowing students to text and talk on their cell phones at lunch and in between classesful but during classes, phones have to be put away, unless used for instructional purposes.
