pulls in moisture, kicks off the cold air. what it means for the state as a hole is a -- whole is a dusting to an inch intensifies. down on the eastern shore. maybe another blast of snow as the colder air really settles in late tomorrow afternoon, before the storm completely clears the area. but mostly a rain-snow mix for most of the eastern shore and southern maryland. this is not unlike the last few storms that have come on through. it will create a bit of a nuisance. not so many things will be impacted. but we will see a colder weekend ahead now back inside. thank you, tim and bob. check in for first warning weather coverage. for the updated forecast. live doppler radar and information on closings and delays. log onto cbsbaltimore.com. update being breaking news. wjz is first to tell you about at 4:00. a stabbing leads to a wild pursuit that ends in a crash. meghan mccorkell with more on what happened. >> that pursuit started on 95 northbound. and it's not hard to see exactly where it ended here in west baltimore. you can see a giant hole in the side of that building. the suv slamming right into it. >> witnesses say they saw this suv flying through west baltimore, being chased by state police. >> we saw the car just speeding down, doing about 100 miles an hour. and we looked up and said, we see the state trooper car coming about hind it. we thought he was going to head into us. we were scared. thought he was going to crash right to us. >> pli police say the suspect inside was wanted for a stabbing in a parging lot in arundel mills mall this afternoon. a lookout went out for a green acura suv. state police spotted it on 95 northbound. but the driver didn't stop, leading them on a wild chase through the city. >> we just seen the car flying down with the state trooper siren on. >> reporter: that driver eventually crashed into the side of this building at north fulton at westwood. he is now in police custody. >> reporter: and a stabbing victim from arundel mills is expected to survive. live in west baltimore, meghan mccorkell, wjz eyewitness news. >> we'll have the latest on this story tonight at 11:00. a police trainee remains hospitalized tonight, after being shot during the -- in the head, during an exercise. our wjz investigation continues to reveal new information about how it happened. tonight, there are concerns that the training session is fully staffed. investigator mike hellgren keeps digging into the story. mike? sources are telling us tonight there just were not enough people monitoring the training. that officer is in critical condition, after several surgeries. >> reporter: the police training session where an officer was shot in the head was not properly staffed. according to wjz sources. as part of our investigation, wjz has also learned the training officer, william scott kern, who baltimore city police confirmed pulled the trigger, was frustrated. the trainee kept raising his head, when he should have remained hidden. and kern put his weapon up to a glass window and fired. he thought he was using a fake weapon, with simulator bullets. instead, it was his real service weapon, with live ammo. lieutenant gene ryan worked with officer -- officer kern. >> he was one of the instructors out there. his work ethic is impeccable. as a street cop, it was no different. this one time, just to take that one second back, it's got to be devastating. >> reporter: sources tell wjz, there were only two training officers present when there should have been four. >> when they redeployed other places to where, you know, should there have been more instructors at that site? where the exercise was being carried on. >> training has remained suspended. the mayor said she was so angry over this, she was speechless. >> reporter: the mayor was outraged, stressing the importance of finding out what happened. >> it would seem to me that someone didn't follow the rules. because obviously a lack of procedure and action in this particular case. >> all that has to be looked at, from a to z, protocol, training, we will ensure we do everything in our power to make sure this never happens again. >> reporter: so state police are telling us that this investigation will take several weeks to complete. and our newspaper partner, the baltimore sun is reporting tonight that the baltimore police department is refusing to release its training policies. live at city hall, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> all right. thank you, mike. and stay with wjz and cbsbaltimore.com for the latest on this developing investigation. we have even more breaking news to tell you about right now. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene of another stabbing. captain jeff long with more. jeff? what can you tell us? >> reporter: vine street in west baltimore remains an active crime scene at this hour. the police tape is up. the police officers are on the ground, with flashlights, looking for more evidence. this was an individual stabbed multiple times, while we were here on the scene. we saw the victim being transported via ambulance. and we saw the suspect put a police car into a police van for transportation as well. reporting live from sky eye chopper 13. i'm captain jeff long. back to you. >> okay. thank you. and gone too soon. a teen stabbed to death after the ravens' super bowl parade is laid to rest today. as police continue to search for his killer. wjz is live at police headquarters. rochelle ritchie has the latest on the search for the killer. >> reporter: baltimore police tell wjz they have pretty solid leads. but still no arrests. >> reporter: these still pictures from a baltimore city police camera, on the corner of howard and fayette, caught the final moments of life for 15- year-old deon tay smith. >> it was unnecessary. a fight breaking out. and he got stabbed. it was so unnecessary. >> reporter: the person in purple is the primary suspect in his murder. >> what we know this far is that it is an isolated incident. the victims knew their attackers. we believe this stemmed from a dispute. >> reporter: his funeral this afternoon brought broken hearts to new antioch church to say goodbye. family and dozens of fellow students from patterson high school are asking themselves why. >> nobody deserves to die. and certainly, he didn't deserve it. >> senseless, senseless, the things going on with our young people today. >> reporter: as the ravens celebrated the super bowl win, police say deontay and several other people got into a fight and he was stabbed several times. he had a heart attack on the way to the hospital and died. the city city watch camera network is the most important source people -- police have right now to track down his killer. >> homicide detectives are reviewing that footage. ask we have some optimistic leads. >> it was really awful to hear that, after coming from this great celebration. >> reporter: many are hoping those who recognize the person in purple, believed to be responsible, will not stand by and let him get away with murder. >> and two other people were also stabbed during the attack. and they survived. i'm rochelle ritchie. vic, back to you. >> rochelle, thank you. if you have any information on the stabbing, please call city police. a grand jury indicts two baltimore city men, including a city firefighter, for allegedly running an interstate prostitution ring. 32-year-old jamar simmons and 33-year-old franklin coit upon arrested in july. police say they ran their operation from a warehouse, bringing women as far away as texas to have sex with clients. both men face a long list of charges. well, the nightmare is finally over. the 4,000 passengers and crewmembers stuck amid fitlez on the cruise ship, now on dry land. randall pinkston reports from mobile, alabama. >> reporter: tugboats haul the broken down triumph from its birthday in -- berth in mobile, alabama. they are investigating the cause of the fire aboard the ship and the extent of the damage. triumph may be moved to the bahamas for club. >> -- cleanup. >> it's almost like coming back to the scene of the crime. >> the passenger returned to the terminal, before heading home to paris, texas. she said enduring the squallid conditions on the ship was life changing. >> made us really appreciate what we have. electric it, flushing toilets, running water. >> reporter: after the ship finally docked last night, passengers were bused to louisiana and texas. many of them took charter flights home. >> reporter: some passengers are complaining that carnival's response to the emergency was slow and inadequate. but triumph's on-board crewmembers are getting high prize. >> -- praise. >> i think they should get hazardous pay. they had to run around with rubber gloves and pick up potty bags. >> they always had a smile on their face. they helped you no matter what. >> reporter: one things passengers disagree on is whether to take up carnival's offer for a discounted cruise in the future. >> are you ready to do it again? >> yes. because certainly lightning can't strike twice in the same place. >> whatever offer they have, they can keep it. or i'll take it and frame it. >> reporter: carnival has canceled triumph's next 12 voyages. >> and carnival now admits the ship had mechanical problems weeks before the engine fire. incredible video out of eastern russia tonight. a meteor races through the sky, creating a sonic boom before crashing to the ground. [ explosion ] those were just two examples of the impact caught on tape this morning. it happened in the city about 900 miles east of moscow. the sonic boom shattered thousands of windows and glass shards. injured hundreds of people. much more on this rare, cosmic event, coming up at 6:30. a familiar sight is heading to harbor east. the flag ship store for underarmour is opening its doors there now. more on this particular area of the city keeps expanding. >> reporter: well, denise, the good news, very few vaceanszs here in harbor east, as it is now filled with restaurants and high-end shops. and now, with underarmour coming this weekend, people say this is not only a destination for tourists other but locals as well. >> reporter: the energy of underwarmor hits harbor east. an 8,000-square foot store officially opens its doors saturday. >> it's going it to be a frenzy. it's fantastic this. is the biggest presence of apparel. >> reporter: henry stafford, vp of apparel accessories says the store will be a model for international growth. >> it's a lab for us to learn. but it's something great for harbor east. >> reporter: while some apparel is unique to baltimore, their shoes are front and center. and an entire half of the store is just for women. >> we're building an amazing, amazing women's business. and we're showing our commitment to that, right when she walks into the store. >> reporter: and adding to the whole store's creative vibe, this giant screen, made up of 330,000 l.e.d. lights. >> reporter: with a prime location right along the water, underarmour hopes to gain even more international exposure. >> we're so pleased to have them here in harbor east. and they think it further solidify harbor east as a real go-to destination. >> reporter: they join a long list of retailers. >> we had j. crew, anthropology, lulu lemon, white house black market and now underarmour open up within just the span of a year. >> reporter: and if you're interested in checking out the store, it opens its doors tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. we're live in harbor east, i'm jessica kartalija. wjz eyewitness news. >> and the store is already boosting the city's bottom line. most of the contractors are from baltimore. and the store's 25 employeeless are all local. >> that one company has changed a lot the landscape of baltimore. still to come tonight on wjz eyewitness news. off the chain. why this popular rapper is snapped, posing for pictures with two maryland state troopers. ambushed. a university of maryland student kills a roommate and then himself. is now putting the issue of mental illness and guns into the spotlight again. governor o'malley shows up in a new 2016 presidential primary poll. what they have to say about him coming up. and get ready for more snow. stick around for the updated first warning weather forecast. we have some light rain in some places. the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. a deadly triple shooting in college park once again has the issue of mental illness and gun control in the spotlight. >> reporter: vic, while the shooter was being treated for mental illness. he was still able to legally purchase firearms. and that has some people questioning state policies. >> reporter: early tuesday morning, in college park, police say 23-year-old university of maryland students, dayvon green, shot his two roommates, killing one, before turning the gun on himself. has motive, still not clear. but detectives say green suffered from mental illness. >> it keeps coming back. and people that do these acts are seriously disturbed. >> psychologist dr. jim dassing says while green may have been treated for mental health issues, they don't always know when someone is going to snap. >> we can only predict if someone has a history of violent behavior. we are only going by the track record. >> reporter: despite his condition, green was able to legally purchase guns. governor martin o'malley is trying to limit the access mental health paicials have to- - patients have to some kind of guns. a new report by the state of maryland task force is also calling for mandatory reporting of severely ill patients who make a threat. >> if someone makes a credible threat, whether it to be healthcare provider or educational or other, that should be reported to law enforcement and they should have to investigate that. >> reporter: but the task force also found that mental illness alone is not an indicator of violence. it showed alcohol, drugs, anger play a role. >> some of these human things that we have. they're what lead people to act out violently. >> reporter: now, it heb reported that green suffered suffered from schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. but that has not been confirmed. >> thank you, monique. governor martin o'mal senow being look into assault rifles being fingerprinted. voters -- some say they would consider voting for maryland governor martin o'malley. but as political reporter pat warren explains, he has ground to cover. >> reporter: many are tested but who would run? governor o'malley showing up in polls around the nation. the latest in new hampshire, where the first primary is held. among democrats, the university of new hampshire survey, reports hillary clinton with an 80% favorability rating this far out. joe biden with 51%. in what many consider the lower- tiered candidate, governor o'malley poarls at 3%. this -- polls at 3%. this is all with 82% of the new hampshire voters undecided. 32% of marylanders surveyed in a recent gonzalez poll say he should run. >> his profile is very high. he took on the major issues, supported the incoming president. >> there is more that unites us than divides us. >> reporter: in fact, maryland knows were convince o convinced by the governor's state of the state address that he is obviously running for president. >> we'll be dealing with, long after he moves onto the campaign trail in 2016. jazz governor o'malley's position is to focus on the prohibit, rather than to the presidency. and any other reference is to governor well. govern well. i'm pat warren. back to you on tv hill. >> and governor o'malley's term ends in 2013. >> wait until you crank up the bob turk for president poll. >> a chicken in every pot. [ laughter ] >> i've been used already, bob. temperatures are starting to fall down to 50, 52. no wind at all. barometer holding steady. come back and take a look at a chance of a little snow after this. here's a live look outside right now. got a little light rain that's falling already. bob says there will be more coming on the way. >> temperatures have already dropped 8 or 9 degrees. and the front has gone through the region. winds are picking up. going to get progressively colder by evening. may start seeing snowflakes with the rain showers. take a look at temperatures to the west of us. 33 in oakland. 40 in hagerstown. just light rain there. 54 in d.c. we're at 50 to 52, depending which location. 44, pax river now. close to the water now, it is chillier. way out in far western maryland. snow mixing in with some of the rain because it is colder. and colder air coming in aloft. 46 bel air. and 46 up in westminster. right now, no wind reported leer. but a west wind to the west of us. here's the front. just going through now behind it. pack of rain really. mainly in the form of rain. as you get across pennsylvania and west virginia, down to 32. some light snow out there. but there's not a lot of precip. this front is going to come through slowly tonight. it will cross the east coast. slow down, and a low pressure is going to develop along that frontal boundary. somewhere off the carolina and virginia coast. now in the 50s. west of us, much colder air out there. and we'll start tapping into that. once low pressure forms along this front out here, the winds here go back to the north and northwest. that drags colder air in. so any precip late tonight and tomorrow afternoon, would more than likely be in the form of light snow. i don't expect to see a lot. but maybe a little accumulation forming, even on the eastern shore. by later in the day tomorrow. even though they may not get much tonight. as the front goes through, temperature starts to fall. low pressure there. and it heads up toward eastern new england. boston could see maybe 3 to 4 inches in the boston, massachusetts area. cape cod. even more up across maine and portions of eastern canada. so definitely colder. all weekend long. temperatures on sunday, only in the low 30s. 39 is your baytemp. north winds tomorrow, picking up to 10 to 15 knots. going to feel pretty chilly compared to what we saw. got up to 59 degrees today. for tonight, rain showers. maybe snow shower activity later on. 34. still says above freezing and the ground so warm. 40 degrees. windy, colder. a bit of a light afternoon snow activity. all done by about dinnertime. by then, temperatures back in the 30s. so it might stick on the grass, particularly. and late -- later tomorrow, as temperatures drop, there could be icing issues in some areas. watch out for that. >> thank you, bob. still to come tonight on wjz eyewitness news. i'm alex demetrick. coming up, pitching for the job. a disgraced john leopold was forced to give up. that story as eyewitness news continues. did the man known as "the blade runner" murder his girlfriend? the evidence in the case against this famous olympian. fire in the sky. a meteor's sonic boom sparks fears at the end of the world. the latest on this rare it is just before 6:30. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight looked like doomsday in one russian city. a huge meteor caused a shock wave. we have incredible video of the event. [ explosion ] >> reporter: the meteor exploded over a small russian town and caused a shock wave. >> glass shattered, injuring hundreds of people. this woman went to the hospital with a bloody arm. others had cuts on their faces and heads. the explosion rocked aun mo -- a mountain range. cameras throughout the area caught the meteor as it streaks across the sty. scientists say it was about the size of a bus. some fragments fell to the ground. but it's unclear if they hit anyone the meet the meet -- the meteor came without warning. >> i heard a loud bang. i live on the 23rd floor of a 24-floor building. and all of a sudden, the lights are shaking and i hear car alarms going off. and it was just incredible. >> reporter: a zinc factory was badly damaged. both the roof and wall collapsed. meteor strikes with such large impact are rare. >> these things happen once every few decade toss centuries. >> reporter: edward lawrence, wjz eyewitness news. >> the shock wave blew in an estimated 1,000 square meters. that's more than 1 million square feet of glass. a large asteroid buzzed through the area as well. it passed over the ocean about 2:30. came within 17,000 miles of the earth. the closest near encounter with the earth in years. scientists say it had nothing to do with the meteor. >> the south african track star known as the blade runner cries in court as prosecutors accuse him of killing his girlfriend. his family says he is innocent. tina kraus reports from london. >> reporter: oscar pistorruousstorruous held his head in his hand and sobbed as prosecutors accused him of premeditated murder of his girlfriend. they charge him with killing his model girlfriend reeva steenkamp. authorities say he shot her on valentine's day, in a possible domestic dispute. prosecutors issued a statement, insisting the world-famous sprinter is not guilty of murder. they wrote he made history as an olympic and paralympic sportsman and has been an inspiration to others the world over. he would like to send his deepest sympathies to the family of reeva. police say he shot the super model four times in the head and upper body. local media reported gunshots blasted through a bathroom door. the shooting is making headlines around the world. the sprinter was nicknamed blade runner for has prosthetic running blade. one of his hobbies was target shooting. a writer for the "new york times magazine" got a surprising invitation while interviewing pistorius last year. >> we went to the firing range and shot his 9-millimeter semi automatic pistol. >> reporter: police say they recovered a 9-millimeter semi automatic pistol, the same one used in the killing. pistoru ius is still in custody and due back in court on friday. >> a bail hearing is scheduled for him next week. but police are expected to reject that request. a manhunt captured the nation's attention. there is a $1 million reward for the fugitive ex-cop on a killing spree. but it may be that no one ends up collecting that money. and christie ileto is in the newsroom to explain why. >> reporter: it's a legal loophole. all because christopher dorner died and was not captured. instead, he died after being cornered by police in the cabin in the san bernardino mountains. it's still unclear if he took his own life, died from police gunfire or when the cabin burned down the los angeles mayor's office is still trying to determine if anyone will be eligible for the award. >> dorner killed four people, seeking revenge for being fired from the police force several years ago. a popular rapper is arrested on drug charges. take a picture of two chains posing with two state troopers. two chains, his real name is talede eps. was arrested after troopers stopped him and found a small amount of marijuana in his van. he was released and made his performance. well, the deadline is today. and 16 people filed to be the next anne arundel county executive. this is all as a result of john leopold's criminal investigation and resignation. the field now includes the acting county executive. >> reporter: surrounded by family, john hammond stepped out of his annapolis home, as anne arundel's acting county executive. a temporary job he was appointed to and now wants to continue. >> i am seeking the office of county executive to fill the remaining term of mr. leopold. >> who resigned after a crim conviction with just 21 months to go in office. hammond is a prior county executive officer. he wants the next 21 months to -- >> put the issues of the past couple of years behind us and reinvigorate the county. >> reporter: those issues include leopold's use of police for personal matters, including mantic rendezvouses. hammond says he will continue to drive himself in his pickup truck. but are thes are aplieg -- others are applying for the job, including kendall ehrlich. >> i think if voters were voting on this, i'd be very strongly the favorite. i'm hoping the council will hear that message. >> reporter: thursday, they will interview all of those who applied for the job and that night will vote in a new county executive. >> it's a unique set of circumstances for which i'm uniquely qualified. >> i have the best resume, the best experience. >> reporter: and all are promising an experience different from leopold. alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, because leopold is a republican, only a republican can replace him. both john hammond and kendall ehrlich say they only want the job temporarily and will not run for the position in 2014. baltimore -- part of the danger of heart disease. winacker says most patients don't know they have it, until a heart attack or stroke occurs. that's why it's called the silent killer. >> you have to put yourself on that priority list. and the sooner you can do it, the better. >> reporter: and not taking care of their health can cost thousands to women. compare it to breast cancer, which kills 40,000 women by a pair of fifth graders. they say one of them took a handgun from an older brother and was going to use it to attack another school. police say another student alerted them to the plot after seeing the knife in the suspect's backpack. an actress best known for her role in melrose place is going to jail. today, she is going to jail for driving drunk and hitting and killing a woman. the woman she killed was an accomplished author in new york's art world. the woman was pulling into her new jersey driveway when locane hit her. prosecution says with time served, locane could be out in six months. doctors are trying to save a little girl's life. they performed a series of complex surgeries on her brain, without cutting into her skull. alison harmelin reports tonight on healthwatch. >> reporter: when camilla gurato was just a few months old, her parents noticed she wasn't using her left hand. >> it was always crunched in a fist. she wouldn't transfer her toys from the right to the left. >> reporter: doctors discovered the 13-month-old has a rare condition called arterio venus mal formation. the blood flow is disrupted in her brain because she's missing capillaries and her arteries are connected directly to her veins. >> the right side of the brain is severely affected. her cognitive development is poor and she would no doubt develop seizures. >> reporter: they are hoping to close off the vessels without invasive brain surgery. they inserted a catheter into her leg and guided it to her brain. they then used what they call medical crazy glue. >> we need to have something that hardens immediately, literally within seconds. >> reporter: this is camilla's third procedure. doctors close off a few blood vessels during each surgery, to give her brain time to adjust to the changes. >> it's just been difficult to obviously deal with her having surgeries and at such a young age. >> reporter: doctors are optimistic camilla will do well cognitively, but may continue to have mild left-sided weakness. >> at least my daughter has a better chance. >> for now, camilla is late hitting milestones. but doctors say if she gross, she could do quite well. in new york, alison harmelin, wjz eyewitness news. >> camilla still needs additional surgeries. her family has moved from south carolina to new york to be closer to her doctors. >> remarkable. anthony mason has a preview
