so when you check on your neighbors, check on them, the day of the code red. but also check on them the day after and the day after that. >> reporter: fatigue, heavy sweating, muscle cramps, headaches, nausea. all signs doctors say the heat is taking its toll on you. baltimore city is opening its cooling centers, where city residents can come in to chill out and get the air conditioning and ice water. >> reporter: and ice water really should be your buzz words in this type of severe heat. doctors say you need to hydrate yourself plenty. make sure if you're outside, you're taking plenty of breaks to try to stay in the shade as much as possible. we're live, derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> first warning weather coverage continues with bob turk with a close look at this extreme heat. >> even though the weekend temperatures were close to today, the difference was the humidity. the dew points come way up. take a look at temperatures around the region. generally around the low to mid- 90s in a couple of spots. a little cooler in ocean city. 84. the dew point only in the low to mid-70s. in orc land, only -- oakland, only 79. but with the high humidity, it feels like 100 degrees here now. 106 in washington. and 107 in easton. certainly, those areas extremely dangerous kind of heat. 92 is the way it feels in ocean city. and oakland, up 81 degrees. now, just a minute ago, the weather sifnls issued a se -- service issued a severe thunderstorm watch in allegheny and washington county. there are storms approaching. and they may affect your region shortly. until 11:00 tonight, you may see some of those storms in your region. they could be strong and gusty. the rest of us, yes, we have air quality alert tomorrow. and a heat advisory in effect again for tomorrow. bernadette has a look at those temperatures. >> it's not sometimes the extreme temperatures. but the consistency of it being hot so many days in a row. want to show you the numbers. started out cool this spring. but since the summer has kicked in, it has been hot. 90.8 degrees. that is our average high temperature for just this month alone. we're already 11 days in. and you can see, that's about four degrees above the normal average for that same time frame. and last month, we started to heat it up a little bit. we had seven days. they were 9 degrees higher. now, as far as this month goes, only 11 days in, we've already hit it seven times. and tomorrow, we're going to do it again and possibly again on wednesday. the heat continues am we'll have a full forecast coming up, including the thunderstorms. we'll have that shortly. stay with wjz's first warning weather for updated forecasts and a list of any closings or delays, go to wjz.com. heartbreak and bloodshed mark a grisly weekend in baltimore. police are trying to solve four murders. wjz is live in city police headquarters. mike hellgren has more on the investigation. and several more shootings, including the one that happened just a short time ago. mike? >> reporter: denise, police are frustrated by all of this violence. and as you just mentioned, we just had a violent outburst. sky eye chopper 13 was over the scene moments ago at pratt and machine monroe -- and monroe street. homicide is on the scene there right now. one of them was transported to the hospital. all of this comes during a very violent few days in the city. [ crying ] >> reporter: baltimore city police capped off one of the bloodiest weekends in months, with five people shot and four people murdered, including the victim of a stabbing at charles and fayette. a frustrated and outraged derek vaughn lives nearby. >> mayor rawg rawg and -- mayor rawlings-blake and the police department need to deal with this issue. we can't have this to our city. we just can't. >> reporter: investigators found 48-year-old patsy person beaten to death in her home just two blocks from patterson park. >> you hear about this kind of stuff happening. but you never think it can happen to you, you know? [ crying ] oh, god. >> we're left with a feeling of frustration. >> reporter: at a briefing this morning, police said they are not changing strategy, pointing out there have been 109 murders this time last year, compared to 108 this year. and joe calow, a tourist killed with a broken bottle. >> we got numerous tips as to who the identity was. >> i was there when his mother found out. and... my little girl is not going to have a dad. >> reporter: police have made no arrests in the shooting of a 4-year-old also at the harbor fireworks display. they continue to review city watch cameras for clues. many are alarmed that some of the recent violence has hit high-traffic areas downtown. >> being very cautious. but not going at it. >> reporter: that was a tourist from connecticut. police say as far as they can tell, all of this violence is unrelated. and again, we have a developing situation at monroe and pratt streets, where two men have been shot. that's the latest from city police headquarters, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> all right. thank you very much, mike. several of the nonfatal shooting victims this weekend were teenage victims. the violence appears unrelated. it's one of the widest corruption probes in years. now, two men at the heart of a kickback scandal plead guilty. mary is live in the newsroom with what happened in court. >> the owners involved in the case entered guilty pleas today. brothers edwin mejia and hernan moreno pleaded guilty. they are the owners in majestic auto repair in rosedale. 17 baltimore officers accused of taking cash in exchange for directing customers to majestic. police say more than 30 officers were suspended in this case. vic? >> mary, thank you. court documents say the scheme grew to include more than 50 officers. two new york city men are accused of stealing documents. 64-year-old barry landow, and barry sadove are being held without bail tonight. in this picture, you can see him with former presidents bill clinton and george bush. they are accused of stealing 60 items on saturday, including documents signed by president lincoln and inaugural ball documents. president obama and congressional leaders are back at the negotiating table. tara mergener reports for wjz, they are trying to hammer out an agreement to cut the federal deficit and raise the debt limit before time runs out. president obama sat down with congressional leaders at the white house again on monday, trying to make a deal on the deficit. >> and we're going to meet every single day until we get this thing resolved. >> reporter: if the government's debt ceiling isn't raised by august 2nd, america could default on its bills. president obama insists an agreement can be reached before then if republicans are willing to give a little. >> reporter: if the basic proposition is, it's my way or the highway, then we're probably not going to get something done because we've got divided government. >> democrats are pushing for $4 trillion in tax cuts and want to end tax breaks for the wethy. -- welty. -- wealthy. but republicans want bigger spending cuts and no tax increases. >> the president continues to raise taxes. and they're just not serious enough about fundamental entitlement reform to solve the problem for the near to intermediate future. >> reporter: the president wants a long-term deal done and will not accept a temporary fix. and he warns, if an agreement is not reached, the economy could fall back into a recession. >> reporter: economists say a default by the u.s. could panic by financial markets around the world. a scenario both want to avoid. >> listen, i agree with the president, we cannot allow our nation to default on our debt. >> and i think the american people want to see something done. they feel a sense of urgency. >> reporter: lawmakers have just three weeks to get a deal done. at the white house, tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> president obama said today he will not sign a 30-day, 60- day, or 90-day extension to the debt limit. he became more than just a baltimore car salesman. monique griego has more with information on the death of bob bell. >> bob was known for his piano- playing tv ads. >> ooh, bob bell ♪ >> it's always all right at bob bell. >> reporter: bell died sunday of leukemia at the age of 78. he began his career in auto sales and eventually headed up the bob bell automotive group. bell started with the ford motor company and expanded it into chevys, niss arns and -- nissans and kias he is survived by his wife of 60 years, children and grandchildren. >> a memorial will be held at the st. louis roman catholic church. preparations for the baltimore grand prix are moving straight ahead. that means drivers will face more road closures. >> denise, it is going to be very, very extensive. the construction is going to ramp up here over the next couple of days. city officials want drivers to be forewarned. start your engine! fallout in britain's phone hacking scandal. as tina kraus reports for wjz from london, there are now allegations reporters tried to get phone roisheds of -- records of 9/11 victims. the phone hacking scandal that took down rupert murdoch's news of the world, could be spreading to its other papers. there are now reports journalists working at news international papers, including the sun and sunday times, hacked into the personal information of ex-prime minister gordon brown. things like his bank account. and his son's medical record. news international says it's investigating this latest charge. >> cannot go on like this. there will have to be some kind of massive, massive clearout of the stables really. it just looks terrible. >> reporter: murdoch is still supporting its embattled ceo, rebecca brooks. british police will question her later this week about the phone hacking cover-up that happened on her watch, at news around the world. >> london's daily mirror tabloid is hitting murdoch with corruption. the paper quotes an ex-new york city cop, saying "news of the world" reporters offered to pay him for phone records of the dead. >> reporter: the phone hacking scandal boiled over last week, with the case of millie dowler, a british teen murdered in 2002. her parents met with britain's deputy prime minister monday. police say journalists from news of the world hacked the victim's voice mail and deleted some messages, giving her parents false hope she was alive. authorities have arrested at least eight people so far, almost all journalists. for now, murdoch was trying to keep the scandal from derailing his $19 billion bid to buy a lucrative british satellite company. in london, tina kraus, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, investigators are also looking into allegations police may have been paid for information, including details about senior members of britain's royal family. you may find something shocking on your facebook wall today. mary is in the newsroom with more today. >> reporter: vic, it is a link to a leaked casey anthony video, showing her confessing to killing her daughter. at least that's what the person who post today wants you to believe. these viruses contain links that contain a third party access to your page. >> experts say you should not even click on the message. intercepted in the air. three times this weekend, fighter jets chased down planes that came too close to camp david in frederick county. alex demetrick reports, it's a noafltz -- no-fly zone that expands whenever pilots visit. >> reporter: pilots know they are close neighbors to camp david, and it's restricted air space. >> ordinarily, it's about 3- miles in radius. when the president is there, it becomes 10 miles in radius. >> reporter: this past weekend, it was in effect. and despite charts and warnings, three planes acrossed into -- crossed into it. >> they had planned to stay outside, and the winds pushed them and they ended up inside the area. >> reporter: long before, attempts are made first by radio to warn them off. if that doesn't work, jet fighters are brought in. they scrambled three times this past weekend over camp david. >> they will have the fighters join your wing and escort you. if you still don't respond, they have used flares before to get pilots' attention. they are very bright flares that they fire ahead of your flight deck. >> pilots find it very disconcerting. some have said that it has shaken them so badly, it's all they can do to continue flying the plane. >> reporter: once they even took over. and like all previous camp david air space violations, no arrests or charges were filed. but the faa can still punish. >> most typical is an 80-day suspension of the pilot's ticket. >> and without that ticket, there's no flying. >> there are gps devices for planes, which automatically increase camp david's no-fly zones when the president is visiting. no measles. authorities issued an alert last month, about a person with measles who traveled through maryland and may have exposed others. no additional cases have been identified. however, everyone should continue to protect themselves with vaccinations. in tonight's health watch, sleep apnea is about much more than losing a good night's sleep. alison harmelin reports for wjz, a new study shows why the disorder is so dangerous. >> reporter: new research in the journal of the american heart association, looked at what sleep apnea does to the blood vessels in healthy people. >> it provides insight into how sleep apnea could lead to cardiovascular disease. >> it shows how a person can stop breathing up to 10 seconds a night. researchers found that even healthy patients had abnormal, small and large blood vessels that can reduce blood flow to the heart. >> this that is where coronary heart disease occurs. >> about 15 million people suffer from sleep apnea. researchers say the new findings could change the way doctors treat the people with the disorder. >> reporter: studies show people who use a continuous, positive air way pressure mask to keep the airways open, can increase their blood supply. doctors say many people have sleep apnea, and don't even know it. so getting a proper diagnosis is key. making changes to your lifestyle is key, too. >> weight loss. avoidance of alcohols. avoidance of certain medications. >> reporter: and trying not to sleep on your back is also a good way to get better, healthier sleep. >> reporter: alison harmelin, wjz eyewitness news. >> and untreated sleep apnea can increase the risk of heart not just about this boat. this project is about the family, the stories, the history. it's multifaceted. >> reporter: jennifer kuhn is helping to make rosie whole again. >> i love it. it's a lot of fun. and it's great to be part of history. >> reporter: the rest restoration project will take about three years. when it's finished, rosie should appear just as she did when she was launched in 1955. people are feared dead, after a cruise ship capsized. alexis christoforous reports for wjz, with more on the accidents. relatives of passengers missing in a boating accident gathered along the shorelines. dozens are still unaccounted for, after a cruise ship sank in the volga river, about two miles from shore. rescue crews pulled about 80 people from the water. this passenger said they tried to flag down several ships before one would stop. officials say the pleasure cruise is popular during the summer months and had about 50 children on board. while the cause of the accident is not immediately known, investigators say the 50-year- old ship had more than 200 passengers on board. and was only licensed for 120. some witnesses say the ship was lifting and when it made a turn, a wave washed over. emergency crews say there's little hope now of finding more survivors. alexis christoforous, wjz eyewitness news. >> russian president demetri med yevev said the accident would not have happened if crews had followed safety rules. a computer glitch stopped the coaster at the peak of the highest hill. park employees rescued two dozen trapped riders with a safety ladder. no one was injured in the incident. a demolished historic bridge in pennsylvania, blown to pieces, after failing a safety inspection. the rusted bridge was too deteriorated to be repaired. it has been closed off since 2009, when inspectors discovered decaying support. a new, $2 million bridge will be built and be ready to use by november 2012. >> wow. i'm not cleaning that up. i'm telling youful that's quite
