all the area west of the bay we still have that watch in effect. west of it is quite a down. that tornado warning is out for the next 15 to 20 minutes. we will continue to watch these storms as they continue to move through the region. once it passes, things will quiet down in the region. >> this system has been much quieter. at least 116 people are dead in joplin, missouri. bernadette woods with more on the strength of the storm. but we begin with luz samora who is in the town of joplin, missouri. >> reporter: rescue crews are climbing through massive mounds of debris looking for survivors. dozens are dead. >> it's indescribable. i don't know what to say other than that. >> reporter: sirens gave residents up to 20 minutes warning. >> that is a monster tornado. >> reporter: but this video captures what many saw. the tornado tossed tractor trailers, split treed and devastated entire neighborhoods. >> i was trapped in the bathroom because all the dining room furniture came in. >> reporter: 180 people were inside this building at the time. about an hour and a half later, everyone was out of the building. >> the hospital workers, ems workers, everybody worked together very well. >> reporter: the hospital is closed and a medical hospital smashed. at least four people died there including a doctor. the tornado that hit joplin just one of many. >> my mom, my grandma and aunt kathie live here. they don't have anything left. >> reporter: liz samora, joplin, missouri. first warning weather coverage continues with bernadette woods with the large number of tornadoes we've seen this year. it's really unbelievable. >> it really is. seems like every week we're doing one of these stories. in april alone there are 875 reports of tornadoes. the average number for april is only 185. so we're actually flying past that number. the old record for a full month is may 2004 and that was in the 500s. so you can see we're way above that for april. in may alone we have another 100 plus and more are being added to that today with another round of severe weather specifically to the west of us. but we're not finished with the severe weather season. vic. >> bernadette, thank you. native who vanished in libya and maybe held captive by gadhafi forces. mike hellgren has the story. >> reporter: representative ruthesburger joined the family outside their home here in south baltimore. they talked about the role gadhafi may be playing in all of this and the danger matthew vandyke is in right now. the fighting remains fierce as libyan rebels battle dictator gadhafi for control of the country. 31-year-old matthew vandyke wanted to witness history firsthand. but his family believes he was captured by there likely by gadhafi's forces. now congressman ruthesburger has promised to help them navigate a diplomatic nightmare. so what's being done to free matthew vandyke. >> the pressure on the gadhafi regime. >> reporter: wjz has learned hillary clinton's state department has taken the lead on the investigation. the talks have gone all the way to the white house. ruthesburger says the forces have been contacted and he plans to call for a legislation on the state floor, hoping to get gadhafi's attention. >> you don't want to take it public untilnothing else works. what i know about gadhafi, he's very controlling and he's on top of everything. if he knew he had americans there i think he would know who they are and where they are. >> reporter: vandyke's mother has traveled the globe trying to find her son who went missing in march. she says her son did not ever intend to put himself in dangers way. >> he never planned to be near where gadhafi was. i think when gadhafi arrived, matthew was there. >> the number one priority is to bring him home safely. >> reporter: and job one is pinpointing exactly where matthew is. right now complicating matters the u.s. officially does not have any diplomatic presence in the ground in libya right now. trooper hunter is survived by six children. homemade bombs inside a home at umbc. tonight police are looking -t into the scare. wjz is live there now, and derek valcourt has more on the investigation. >> reporter: two fire bombs were found just outside of this dormitory. not in any of the specific rooms and that has police trying to figure out who put them there. on the unbc campus. >> are you serious? >> reporter: students are just now learning about the fire bombs discovered near her dormitory. >> it's a little crazy. i'm living right there. >> reporter: it happened just after 10:00 saturday morning when a dormitory staff member working near the building found two molitile cocktails near the building. >> i saw the cops come around, they were all worried about moving people out of the way. and then they went and they grabbed him. >> they're not sure who placed them there but they found them and they were a little freaked out about it. >> reporter: classes here ended last week and students were asked to leave by saturday at 8: 8:00. so by the time saturday rolled around, there were very few students. >> now that i'm hearing something about it. i'm like oh god, i cannot believe that was happening behind my door. >> that's not a college prank. that's an incendiary, so it's very concerning, yeah. >> umbc is a very safe place. you have to wonder what these kids were doing, definitely. campus police investigating say so far they have no suspects. we're live in catensville. the state fire marshal's office responded to the campus to collect and dispose of the devices. it's an annual tradition. the practice flights set for tomorrow and wednesday afternoon have been cancelled. cancellation is due to a safety concern follow ago poor performance yesterday in an air show in lynchburg virginia. it's not known if the jets will make their traditional fly over graduation. jessica cartalia was there as first year students scrambled to get it done. >> reporter: sometimes that's the way professional cycling views doping. you know this is the way the game is played, if we get caught then we're penalized but this is what we do. >> reporter: 60 minutes also says kathy the teammate closest to armstrong also told the jury that armstrong took the drugs. >> i feel bad i had to go here and do this but at the end of the day, long term the sport is going to be better off for it. >> reporter: the international cycling unit denied any reports that they covered up positive drug tests. if you're looking for a new job that pays well, you might want to apply for wise around the region right now 81. 79 up in elkton. still sunshine with no storms there. where it did rain temperatures have dropped back into the 70s. severe thunderstorm watches still in the city. and where we have shower activity once again, severe thunderstorms watch in effect from the bay. west to fredrick county all this area until 8:00 tonight. with storms still moving through the region. still a risk of some strong locally strong storms. winds now southwest bringing up warm and humid air across the region. that's going to continue pretty much all week long. one batch of rain missed us but shower activity developed later on. that will move in tonight, but tomorrow afternoon there's another batch developing. that will get us in the afternoon. so warm and humid conditions are probably going to stay with us for the rest of the week. with temperatures running above normal and a risk of showers and storms every afternoon. a small craft advisory tonight. showers and storms will be clearing out, 64 overnight, maybe a little fog if it rains tomorrow. storms possible at 3:00 or 4:00. we'll watch those. >> here we go again. thank you bob. we are cruising toward summer season and finally gas prices are coming down. right now we're paying an average of $3.87. that's down four cents from friday. this time last month it was $3.87. talks with motorists who say this is a good thing as we approach the holiday weekend and the start of the summer driving season. >> prices at the pump are changing. right before your eyes. down 11-cents in the past week. driver manny garnez is taking note. >> the price of gas is good for today, because yesterday a couple of pennys, a couple of cents makes a big difference. >> reporter: the biggest winner may be robert morgan. check out his yamaha scooter. fills it up for $4. >> about 70 miles to the gallon. if they raids the gas up, take a little ride across town. >> reporter: heading across the bay bridge down the ocean, prices are even lower. >> the cheapest gas in maryland in the eastern shore is about 20-cents cheaper in the gallon there. >> reporter: gas is still a buck more a gallon than this time last year. >> and i'm hoping that prices will drop closer down to the lower levels, maybe where it was this time last year. >> here is more good news, industry experts say the decline in gas prices in maryland could be just a start. they could drop even more later this summer. >> and hopefully by july or august, even see them as low as between the $325 to $3.75 per gallon. >> pray for lower gas prices. >> pray, hum it, following a tornado that slammed into the territory. the death toll could continue to rise. >> reporter: in joplin, missouri a path of devastation after one of the most powerful tornadoes in u.s. history touched the area. >> it's undescribable. i don't have anything else to say other than that. >> we know it is indeed a sad day in joplin. >> reporter: rescue teams are going door to door, car to car, pile of rubble to pile of rubble looking for survivors, but bad weather is hampering their effort. governor jay nixon says five families have been pulled out alive and he believes there is more. >> we're going to have to comb the area and make sure no one was left behind. while this cell phone video shows just darkness as people huddled up in a gas station, it shows their fear. in washington, nicole collins, wjz eyewitness news. and we are tracking some storms here in maryland tonight. meteorologist bernadette woods has live doppler radar for us, bern. >> severe thunderstorms warning in effect for three separate counties. we have live doppler radar and show you what we have going on. severe thunderstorms warnings are in effect until 8:00 tonight. the worse we're seeing is right in here. it's just extreme northern section of prince george's county. because it's this thunderstorms moving off to the east of rockville. it is producing winds, possibly up to 60 or 70 miles per hour. these storms have shown history of hail. so these thunderstorms are making their way through. in additional to what we're seeing right there. no warnings out but some thunderstorms also making the way to the city and up toward northern parts of the baltimore county and cecil county. also thunderstorms watch effectively until 8:00. it has been extended to all the pink shaded counties.
