endured verbal abuse from her husband. and her attorneys said he planned the murder in her own defense. but prosecutorred blasted back that carla porter was lying about the a abuse. they said she has hat 3-1/2 years to come up with the worse story. even if these stories are true, he said it does not provide carla porter for any defense for what she's done. the real question before the jury right now, is will this be a case of first degree murder, perhaps second degree murder or voluntary manslaughter. little doubt in anybody elseless minds elseless -- elses mind. she will also be charged with murder because she herself admitted that she took part in the planning of that murder. >> porter could face life in prison without the possibility of parol. notorious gangster whitey bulger is found guilty. and vic is in the newsroom with details. >> reporter: the 83-year-old once on america's most wanted list could spend the rest of his life behind bars. he is charged with committing and being involved in 18 murders. he was also convicted of racketeering and conspiracy. bulger showed no emotion as the decision was read. in 1984 he evaded arrest. bulger was captured years later in 2011. he was living with his girlfriend in an apartment that also contain add stash of guns and more than $800,000 in cash. bulger did not take the stand in his own defense telling the judge, quote i didn't get a fair trial. this is a sham. you do what you want with me end quote. denise, back to you. >> the panel deliberated a total of 18 hours over four days. security is tightened in the case of manning. the video shows manning at the defense table and the judge on the bench. it is set to a track of people yelling free manning. manning is expected to make a statement himself on wednesday. he faces up to 90 years in prison for leaking classified documents to the website wikileaks. a man is busted at vwi airport with a gun. tsa officers found a gun with five rounds and an addition magazine with six rounds last week. the man from lancaster california was headed to las vegas. firearms of course are not permitted in carry on bags but they can be transported in checked bag s if they are temperatures in the mid-80s. normal high today is now 86 so we got above that. 84 annapolis, 86 in columbia and 85 westminster and bell air. we now have a bit of a west wind. it brought some drier air during the afternoon. which means it's more comfortable right now than it was earlier in the day. ahead of the front that front will kick up some showers and thunderstorms already. a batch here, once again in the midwest. they've had just deluge after deluge, training thunderstorms one after the other. there's also a front starting to develop from the upper michigan into iowa. that is going to focus this moisture across the ohio valley to kentucky and that will be moving into the area late late tonight. maybe up to 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning. to the north i have a north found that's sliding across new york state. it's a little cooler down south. we do have a good chance of getting rain in the area as we mentioned. the best chance for severe weather, really drenching down. pouring gusty wind and hail will be east to our region. particularly eastern shore, delaware and southern portions of the western shore. maybe around 7:00 and along the shore of maryland that will be in the afternoon. but overnight, showers and thunderstorms could develop in the region. heavy downpours. the good news is once this front moves through the area tomorrow afternoon, drier, cooler air moving in. and this is a real taste of fall. there could be temperatures in the upper midwest back at night in the upper 30s. could break some records. this is a good air mass coming from central canada and it will dominate our air into the beginning of the weekend. so after today no extreme temperatures at all. i call them 91 today. a little bit on the warm side. bay temps at 79. slowly but surely coming down. thunderstorms activity overnight, low of 70. could be some strong storms even in the morning. there could be some heavy downpours on your way to work. 7:00, 8:00 in the morning. could be wrong doing in the anne arundel county police department? an independent police task force revealed its findings. wjz is live at anne arundel county. monique griego is there with the latest in the investigation. >> reporter: today the task force gave police a list of recommendations. the task force said it did not find any deep rooted corruption, just a few bad people causing problems. a scandal involving a council member left the police department in turmoil. >> it became apparent that the problems within our department required swift actions. >> reporter: laura newman formed a task force to into into the problem. members included phil belfield. >> we did not see systemic problems we saw a distraction. >> reporter: instead belfield said it was a few bad apples. former county executive john leopold was conducted of misconduct. officers in his protection detail had helped him carry out his criminal activity. amidst the allegations, former chief james tier resigned. his replacement larry tolliver only lasted 10 days before stepping down. number one on the list was finding a new leader. kevin davis was appointed chief last month. >> all of the agencies suffer. this time around the police department suffered. >> reporter: other recommendations were to hire a private executive protection staff, increase ethic oversight. review the structure of the department and improve internal investigations. >> people need to know that there are recourses. that the internal investigations unit is effective. >> reporter: now the report also found the department never on her face when we were coming up the trail. >> reporter: authorities spotted demaggio and anderson from the air. then a hostage rescue team went in on the ground. the 40-year-old was shot and killed by an agent. after he was given the opportunity to surrender. >> hannah and her father were reunited over the weekend and while one ordeal may be over the teenager now has to prepare for another. the funeral for her mother and little brother. the bodies of cristina anderson and ethan were found in their burned home. hannah was not aware of their death until she was rescued. her family members were celebrating her return but they're also in mourning. >> we had to totally focus on hannah, period. so now we can take our time to grieve my daughter and my grandson. >> reporter: demaggio was a long time friend of the anderson family and like an uncle to the kids. but a friend of hannah says the 40-year-old confessed he had a crush on the teenager. bigad shaban. >> cristina anderson and her two children visited demaggio last sunday to say goodbye because he was planning to move to texas. the plane went down into the waters off eliket island last night. two men were rescued by both. both are friday. saturday a few more clouds a little warmer. that's just about average for the weekend. denise. >> thank you, bob. homicide detectives are still searching for the gun used in the aaron hernandez murder case. and now police are turning their focus to hernandez girlfriend as a possible suspect in disposing of the weapon. susan candiati has more. >> reporter: a fallen football star, aaron hernandez -- did the fiance of fallen football star aaron hernandez help him hide a weapon? that's a question investigators have. >> if she is tied into this conduct, she is an accomplice after the fact to a murder. >> reporter: a warrant revealed new affidavit. in the 10 days before hernandez was arrested, fiance shayana jenkins was seen coming and going from his home. she's also seen on different surveillance videos leaving the house after receiving a strange message. his fiance puts a rigid object into the car and returns a half an hour later without carrying anything back inside the house. remember these surveillance stills taken inside hernandez' show him in the hours just before and after the murder of oden lloyd. holding what prosecutors believe is a gun. another defendant carlos ortiz allegedly told police that after the murder, hernandez put two guns into a lock box. warrants also were executed at a storage facility in bristol where hernandez allegedly rented a unit. authorities also searched a lake near his uncle's home and plan to search another pond in the coming weeks. >> even if a weapon is not found, this appears to be a strong case against mr. hernandez. >> reporter: susan candiati, new york. >> he should -- hernandez was charged with lloyd's death but has not been indicted. three people were killed when a korean carrier slammed into the sea wall july 6. more than 300 people survived that crash. passengers can sue the carrier even after accepting compensation. the epa plans to examine a sand dune that collapsed last month burying a 6-year-old boy. nathan waysner was trapped under sand for more than three hours. the dunes national lake shore has been closed since that accident. geologists theorize a tree trunk decomposed in the dune causing the sand dune to collapse swallowing the boy. eric holder wants to scale back sentences for nonviolent drug offenders. sarah merginer reports from washington, it is expected to help ease prison overcrowding. >> reporter: the u.s. attorney general eric holder wants to end harsh prison sentences for some drug related crimes. >> we need to insure that in incarceration is used to punish, deter and rehabilitate but not merely to warehouse and to forget. >> reporter: the sentence was made in the 80s to try to fight the drug war. almost half the inmates are there for drug related crimes. add many of them are low income and black or latino. this costs taxpayers more than $80 billion a year. >> every dollar that the doj spends keeping a nonviolent drug offenders locked up is a dollar that could be used to spend bullet-proof vests for cops. >> reporter: now they're looking to change the way they are charged. >> we in the federal government can be smarter and tougher on crime. >> reporter: but former assistant u.s. attorney bill othis says mandatory minimum sentences have proven effective. >> there has been a big increase in the prison population but crime has gone down by 50%. >> more than a dozen states are already moving in holder's direction. shifting money away from prisons and to drug treatment centers. in washington, tara merginer, wjz eyewitness news. holder is also expanding justice department policy to allow elderly inmates who did not commit violent crimes and have already served their sentences. last week the state department rushed to shut down 18 of its 19 embassies when it received word of the violent attack. there will be extra security at one of the locations once employees return. the high alert is to avoid an attack like the one in benghazi that killed four americans. the yemeni capital embassy will remain closed. the decision to postpone the crack down against two protests camps by muslim brotherhood supporters came after plans of ending the sit ins were leaked to the media. authorities were expected to take action this morning. officials say the move would have triggered more bloodshed. these two camps have been sitting out for days. investigations continue into charges that he conspired with palestinian militants during the country's 2011 uprising. a wave of deadly attacks in iraq is raising fears of a return to sectarian war. at least 64 people were killed in bombings in baghdad during festivities. the islamic group of and umbrella groups are claiming they authorized the attack. >> there's a link between child delivery and the chances of the child having autism. >> reporter: a new study from duke medicine found that inducing labor and increasing the strength of contractions may raise the chances of autism especially boys. >> what we found is an elevated risks of 35% in boys that were induced. >> reporter: doctors don't know exactly what causes autism but scientists suspect genetics and environment play a role. >> this study gives us another environmental factor that may be influencing risks for autism. again while these findings are preliminary and the risk was modest, it still raises some red flags. >> reporter: that's because about 20% of births in the u.s. are induced. and about 70% are augmented. but research does not show that these studies increase chances. >> it could be the circumstances of maternal health, or it could be the augmentation process itself. >> reporter: researchers say you should learn about the circumstances so you can learn more about autism. >> when it came to girls the risk of autism only went up when the strengths of frequency of the mother's contractions were increased. a massive sink hole opens up near disney world in florida. plus
