Some schools other than sandy hook reopened for the First Time Since the shooting. Buses carrying children drove on to school grounds. The buses had green and white ribbons on the front. Investigators say the gunman, 20yearold adam lanza, had fired guns at shooting ranges during the past several years, but there was no evidence he did so recently as practice for the rampage. Its been widely reported School Shooter adam lanza suffered some kind of personality disorder, but its still unclear if his family ever tried to get him help to prevent him from turning violent. Her organization nami overwhelmed by requests for help every day. A mother wanted a teenager to go to a psychiatrist. They could not get in to see someone for six weeks. Reporter from the mass shooting in tucson aimed at former congresswoman gab result giffords to the colorado Movie Theater massacre, killers in many recent mass killings suffered Mental Illness and failed to get the appropriate treatment. Funding for Mental Health care is down almost 2 billion since 2009. Marylands funding down 4 . Howard county executive ken ullman critical of the cuts. I think that Mental Health has been something that has gotten the support and resources it needs. There are a lot of troubled folks out there. We have a culture of violence. You never know what gets in the head of somebody who is not well. Reporter over the years many institutions for the mentally ill have disappeared leaving more families to deal with Sick Children at home. Mental Health Problems affect 1 in 10 children. As schools stay wide on a crackdown on facility, a woman pulled a knife at a middle school. Wjz is live [inaudible]. Mike hell again is there and has details on the response. Reporter good evening. A School Employee confronted this woman because she never checked in at the front desk. Thats when School Administrators say she attacked. The second violent encounter on a Baltimore City campus in a week happened here at National Academy foundation. A woman was buzzed into the locked doors of the prep building where milling schoolers attend classes. Administrators say she failed to check in at the front office. They say she was delivering a birthday cake to a relative when a schoolworker challenged her in the hall. She pulled out a knife, cutting the workers hands and was later arrested. It alarmed a grandmother of a student here who asked wjz not to identify her. I feel fearful for my grandson also. Now you have to go through a procedure before he could come out. And i think its good. Reporter she is concerned about outsiders gaining access to classrooms following the shooting in connecticut. There is no explaining it away. Its just its awful. Its gut wrenching. Reporter School Officials would not say why the person was originally buzzed in through the door and how it all escalated into a weapon being pulled. It follows an attack on a 7th grader at Calverton Middle School last week who said adults, including another parent, allowed on campus beat her as she ran an errand at the principals office. There is nothing you can say. Reporter the ceo urged vigilance to keep children safe and School Police have been more visable on campuses citywide. Its a punch in the gut. Its a situation where every parent across the country is struck. We have to keep School Safety on the front burner. Reporter tonight yet another incident at a city school. Friendship academy where a student had a plastic. It was never fired and it was taken away without incident and that school faces disciplinary action. In nearby milford, delaware, a 16yearold was charged with bring ago shotgun to high School Inside his car. Police say he didnt threaten anyone and he now is in custody. New tonight there is a tb case on unbcs campus. University Officials Say the person has been isolated and treatment has begun. Right now the university and the Health Department are notifying people who may have come in contact with that individual so appropriate screening tests could be done. The Health Department says there is no need to be alarmed. Tuberculosis is very difficult to contract through typical campus live. It is an airborne disease which typically affects the lungs. Baltimore county police are warning shoppers in towson about a thief stealing iphones. Sunday afternoon two people were robbed of their iphones while shopping in towson town center. A woman sitting on the bench inside the mall had her iphone taken right out of her hands. Another was stolen inside macys. Police are looking for two suspects. Holiday travel is up this year in maryland. In aaa readdicts 2 million marylanders will take to the skies and roads to see loved once this holiday. Reporter the auto club says that travel by car, plane and train are all up this holiday season. No matter what mode of transportation you choose to use to get to your destination, they say that millions of marylanders will get away. This could be a good sign. Steel plates going down over the hole where they have been working on this water main break struck by contractors earlier. And 2600 homes and businesses are currently being affected with a loss of water right now in this area. Now, the boundaries this is in east baltimore. East baltimore street to the north. Danielle nottingham reports for wjz with more on president obamas latest counteroffer to prevent year end tax hikes for middle class americans. House Speaker John Boehner met with fellow republicans this morning to discuss president obamas fiscal cliff proposal. The speaker also began work on a socalled plan b to prevent a tax increase in case he does not reach a deal with the white house before january 1. Our plan b would protect american taxpayers who make a 1 million or less. The white house quickly rejected boehners backup proposal. The plan thats been put out there achieves nothing. You would lose hundreds of billions of dollars of revenue. Reporter the president initially insisted on lets tax cuts expire for household making 250,000 or more. But the now white house count he proposal raises that threshold to 400,000. And for the first time the president is willing to accept some reduction in future cost of living benefit increases for Social Security recipients. In addition to his negotiations with the president , boehner has another challenge. Convincing gop consecutives to accept any increases in income taxes. Many republicans believe tax increases will hurt small businesses. Paige or fanso owns a company that installs voice and data networks. There has to be a reform and entitlement. There has to be at least reduction in spending in terms of federal government spending. Even though the fiscal cliff deadline is the end of the year, Congress Still needs time to vote on a deal to avoid taxes going up for all americans and across the board spending cuts. As wjzs Derek Valcourt explains, its a longterm solution to what has been a bitter battle between track owners and the horses states men. Reporter after years of debate, all sides have come together and agreed on a lengthy contract that will allow horserace to go continue here in maryland for the next decade. For horseracing fans its about one thing. Just the thrill of it. Reporter and that thrill will now continue until at least the year 2022. Thats thanks to an agreement approved by the Maryland Racing Commission tuesday. Maryland will see 146 live racing days in 2013 and at least 100 days of live racing for the next nine years after that. You will remember this a decade from now. Reporter alan thorman says the deal should give horse men a strong future. The deal is a win for the Maryland Jockey Club which owns and operates the tracks. The new financial arrangement will allow them to make improvements to their aging facilities knowing they will get a return on their money. The agreement ends years of debate over the two groups over how to save the states industry. We can get down to the business of running the racetrack and doing the best for racing. The debate over gun control is picking up momentum in the days since the Connecticut School shooting. The death of 20 children may be the Tipping Point in washington where grieving families from previous gun violence went today to be heard. Tatyana anderson has the story for wjz. Reporter families of shooting victims came to remember their loved ones. My sister was a freshman at virginia tech. Reporter and it ask congress for tougher gun restrictions. She was 16 years old and my only child. Reporter dan gross brother was shot at the Empire State Building in 1997. 40 of gun sales take place without a background check. No questions asked. So felons, the dangerously mentally ill can get guns. Reporter selfpro gun lawmakers have come forward saying its time to put gun control back on the table. And the white house says it will push lawmakers to reinstate a ban on assault weapons. As the debate grows, at least one gun seller took a big step. Dicks Sporting Goods announced its suspended sales of guns nationwide because of the shooting. The financial world also got involved. The private equity firm that produces busch master rifles is selling its stake. Indianas newly elected congressman says they may get in the debate. They take away freedom for lawabiding folks and they dont take away guns from those who end up being the eventual perpetrators. Reporter so far no comment from the National Rifle association. Reporter last friday began as a normal day for luke san tan and his third grade classmates at sandy hook elementary. But things got scary pretty quickly. There were about now there is something. And we heard gunshots. Reporter on the other side of the building the shooter was beginning his rampage. Lukes teacher tried to protect her kids. So youre in the classroom and mrs. Mckenzie, is she calm . Is she excited . How was she . She was crying. Reporter mrs. Mckenzie was crying . Yeah. Reporter because it must have been pretty scary. Yeah. But then like our next door teacher said to come to her classroom. Reporter so you all went in this . Yeah, because probably the gunman was going to come in our classroom. I dont know. Reporter fortunately for luke and his classmates the gunman never made it to their classroom. But even as they were ushered to safety at a nearby firehouse, the kids were very scared. And luke bravely wanted to help calm them. Theyre crying and im like, its okay. My dad is a cop. Hell like help us. Reporter his dad, luke ramirez, is a Police Officer in the neighboring town of oxford. And he did come. He was one of the First Responders on the scene. He grabbed me, actually. And i said, oh, i said, youre finally here. What took you so long . Reporter it was a happy ending for the santana family. But for luke its still sinking in. But i am glad i wasnt on the other side because then i probably wouldnt make it. Reporter no thought any 8yearold. Ever have to carry. Sandy hook elementary will remain closed indefinitely. It happened in caroline county. Police say arthur cohee was found dead in his home with trauma to his head and neck. His daughter said he had been killed by two intruders. Police say her story didnt add up. She is now charged with first degree murder. A huge fire in baltimore leaves a family homeless today. As mike schuh reports, the fire could have been worse if not for a quick thinking neighbor. Here is what it sounds like when firefighters must evacuate this burning home. That horn confirmed what bystanders feared. This fire in dundalk was dangerous, big, and getting worse. There was a call for a mayday bubo that was a mistake. The firefighter was in the rear of the building. They found him. Reporter two kids, 13 and 9, were home alone watching tv. Luckily, neighbor ed hurley was out walking his dogs. Two kids came running out and said a fire i went around real quick. They tried to get the cat or something and i told them no. Reporter judging how quickly smoke turned to fire, ed may have saved their lives. Not even five minutes. I mean, it was quick. Its almost like it exploded. Reporter the girlfriend who lives here tells a neighbor she believes the fire started in a clothes drier. The who us is gutted. Childrens toys lay ruined. This is a tough time of year to lose what you have. Thats why denise is dropping off what she can as nothing inside here is usable. Just so much has been happening. I just felt the need to do it. Gary tuckman reports for wjz on a group from the midwest who brought the therapy dogs to help children cope with their grief. Reporter nine golden retrievers on the march to make their way into a Recreation Center in newtown, connecticut, for an Emotional Rescue to help comfort the children to survived the attack at sandy hook elementary. They were sponsored and trained by Lutheran Church charities, transported in a van for a 900mile from illinois. Let me give you a quick introduction to the dogs here. This is chewy. This is ruthie. Abbey. Luther. Maggie. Hannah. Barney. And chamois. These are the comfort dogs. What is a comfort dog . A comfort dog is one who brings comfort to other people when they are suffering or hurting or bringing happiness to people. It helps people process their grief. So they are specially trained in. They are specially trained. These are all Trained Service dogs. We dont use them with disabled. We train them and then train them additional to work with all different age groups and people. To some people, and we have seen this with children, it brings a sense of calmness in the time of confusion during this period. To some it helps them process their grief. They will start crying and they will hug the dog. And to some children they will come up sad and theyll walk away happy. Well, the u. S.
