are. >> it was from the london office, which was supposed to be balancing risk. but the portfolio got too complex. and they lost control. >> reporter: the chief executive dismissed it as a tempest in a tea pot. he now admits the blunder has shaken it to its core. >> we don't take it lightly, diamond -- dimontold analysts. >> reporter: even with the giant loss, jp morgan chase made a profit last year. an lifts point out that jp morgan's loss may be another bank's gain. >> someone has made a huge profit. there is another side to this trade. we just don't know who that is. >> reporter: >> reporter: we also don't know if the damage is over yet. dimorn admitted the bad trade could lead to future losses, as much as $1.7 billion. in new york, i'm alison harmelin, wjz eyewitness news. >> jp morgan chase news was better than expected and lifted its stock. that had an impact on the market. dow was up. s&p up. and nasdaq up 43. secret service is looking into a report of a washington, d.c. police officer, threatening first lady michelle obam a. vic is in the newsroom with the latest on this. >> the officer in the middle of the controversy is a 17-year veteran of the d.c. police force. he was overheard saying he would, quote, shoot the first lady, end quote. and then showed the picture from his cell phone of the firearm he would use. he allegedly made the remark when he was asked why he was late for a motorcade assignment. >> late this afternoon, the white house confirmed that the president was aware of the threat but has not yet released a statement on it. bomb scare. a delta flight lands in mad rid, hours after landing at new york's jfk international airport. more than 200 people were evacuated after a report of a suspicious device in the bathroom. officials say the wires were determined to be nonexplosive but didn't belong to the plane. no arrests were made. rochelle ritchie has the latest from police headquarters. >> reporter: the officer who fired those fatal shots is a 17- year veteran with the baltimore county police. he's now on paid administrative leave. >> reporter: baltimore county police say just before midnight, they tried to serve a search warrant at this home on the 400 block of high meadow home. >> they made their way to the second floor. >> reporter: it was on the second floor, corporal kathleen baton says an unknown man, later identified as 48-year-old ronald melvin cox jr., began singing -- swinging a sword as officers entered the bedroom. >> it was a very large sword, somewhere in the vicinity of three feet long. >> the officer opened fire to stop the attack. >> the suspect died at the scene. police are not say figure he is connected to the attempted murder case. >> the officer is with the tactical unit here. his name is not being released. i'm rochelle ritchie, wjz eyewitness news. >> coming up at 5:00 and 6:00, find out how this case is connected to the shooting of a 15-year-old until howard county. a carroll county man is behind bars, accused in a double -- deadly double shooting, rather. it happened at the harvest inn on liberty road -- liberty road in eldersberg, just after midnight. david garrett, and gary how were found lying in the parking lot. garrett was pronounced dead. how was taken to shock trauma with nonlife-threatening injuries. a short time later, police arrested and charged jacob richer with first-degree murder. a montgomery county apartment complex goes up in flames. 100 firefighters battled the blaze this morning. at one point, at least eight people were trapped. but they escaped without injury. fireofficials think the flames started on the ground floor and spread to the roof. the fire has been ruled accidental. the baltimore city fire department is changing its social media guidelines. alex demetrick from the newsroom, with what is bringing about the change. alex. >> according to our media department, the baltimore sun, they are taking a second look at its rules on social media. fire department says they may soon change their rules on comments. this comes after some firefighters wrote inappropriate, insensitive, or inaccurate information on websites like twitter. some firefighters say policies could hinder their constitutional rights to free speech. the city's police force is also reportedly working on its policy as well. mary? >> sounds like complaints posted on twitter include the city's decision to close three fire companies for budgetary reasons. and the approval of a raise for baltimore's fire chief. >> nationwide outrage. a report finds that top school officials at penn state, including legendary coach joe paterno, covered up child sex abuse by jerry sandusky. joe paterno's family is file fighting back. >> we are here today because of a terrible tragedy was allowed to occur over many years at penn state university. >> reporter: fallout from the freeh report seemed to spread to every crack and corner of penn state. from the board of trustees. >> our hearts remain heavy. and we are deeply ashamed. >> reporter: to the school's president, all across this once happy valley ask beyond. >> it's really sad, bad for the university, terrible for the paterno family. >> reporter: the report, 8 months in the making, totaling more than 430 interviews, proved as comprehensive as it was condemning. laying out in details what freeh called the most callous and shocking disregard for child victims. some years of serial sexual abuse by jerry sandusky, covered up by paterno, graham spannier, athletic director tim curly and director gary schulz. >> what is significant and shocking is that the four of them, the most powerful people in penn state university, made a decision to conceal this information. >> reporter: last night, in an interview with cbs news anchor scott pelley, jay paterno defended his father. >> he did not commit any criminal acts. he did not cover up any criminal acts. >> reporter: but the report said that the four were acutely aware of sandusky's pleasure in boys and covered up. driven by a sad truth. >> there's a lot of consequences that go with this. the brand, including the reputation of coaches. including the ability to do fundraising. it's got huge implications. >> all the former penn state officials named in the report deny any wrongdoing. but two of them are charged with lying to the grand jury. the summer skies are turning a little dark today, taking a live look outside. clouds are covering the region. so is rain inevitable. wjz has weather and traffic together. we'll start with meteorologist bernadette woods with the updated numbers from first warning weather. bernadette? a chimp escapes its cage. how its adventure turned deadly in the streets of las vegas. i'm ron matz in fells point. a unique shop, now in its 37th year. the brass facts coming up here on wjz. and it sure looked like rain is headed our way. will it washout the entire weekend. the first warning weather is coming up. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, it is mostly cloudy. 87ing -- 87 degrees in central maryland. right now, the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. a natural gas line erupts and bursts into flames, causing problems for residents in st. louis. flames shot as high as 40 feet in the air. a nearby apartment complex was evacuated while firefighters worked to protect nearby buildings from the blaze. no word on whether anyone was hurt. a dramatic car crash is caught on camera in new jersey. keep your eyes on the left side of your screen. watch as the driver runs a red light, then slams into another car. the vehicles you see flips over. and then finally comes to a stop. traffic cameras caught the crash from several different angles. despite the sever itof the accident, the driver was treated only for minor injuries. he was, however, charged with dwi. the other driver was not hurt. yahoo is looking into a major hacking of nearly half a million e-mail and password comimations. -- combinations. a hacking group is claiming responsibility, saying it stole the information to give yahoo security managers a wake-up call. well, yahoo apologized today and is urging users to change their passwords regularly. they say only 5% of the pass words are still valid. >> reporter: the athletes representing the united states in the upcoming summer olympics are american. but there's outrage growing because the clothes they'll be wearing are not. >> reporter: the expression "made in the usa" may apply to the 2012 olympic team members am but according to critics, you can't say that about the uniforms they're wearing because the clothes are made in china. >> i am so upset that i think the olympic committee should be ashamed of themselves. i think they should be embarrassed. i think they should take all the uniforms, put them all in a big pile and burn them and start all over again. >> reporter: fashion giant lauren touts touts that his company is the proud outfitter of team usa. but many of the blazers were outsourced to china. a missed opportunity to provide valuable jobs to america. >> it's very disturbing. it could have completely been manufactured here in the united states. >> reporter: the u.s. olympic committee issued a statement but didn't directly address the controversy, but essentially saying it's privately funded and grateful of sponsors. other says be realistic. >> when companies are able to outsource, they're able to. >> they say the few items, olympic items available for sale, are pricey. a beret, $55. a men's blazer, $750, and the neck tie, $125. a sport made popular by the harry potter books, may be seen at the olympics. many are playing quidditch. and many say it deserves a spot in the olympics. many say it's a cross between rugby and dodgeball. many gathered for their first major international tournament. no word if it will be seen at the 2016 summer games. they have to get them up in the air first, though. >> yeah, i think that's the whole intriguing part of it, right?
