shore with more on those possible tornadoes. but first, bob turk and meteorologist tim williams tracking more severe weather in our area. let's start with bob. >> there are storms. let's go back to around 12:45 to 1:15. and that's when a tornado warning was issued for portions of queen anne's county. there it is. south of chestertown. northwest of henderson. a couple of cells moving through there. and apparently when folks saw funnel clouds. obviously, we'll be investigating that. and the weather service will be out there as well to see if there is any evidence of actual tornado touchdowns in that region. warnings were issued about 12:45. tim joins me now with a look at our current radar and the watches and advisories that are still in effect for the region. tim? >> reporter: that area over the eastern shore has calmed down a little bit. but what we're dealing now is another set of storms. from york county down on past ann aright-handle county. -- anne arundel county. very strong cells embedded in these storms. and when you start to see some of those purples and higher amounts, there could actually be some hail involved in some of these storms. expect that there will be capable of very gusty winds. and heavy downpours. but there are no severe warnings issued. you can see they're all moving in our general direction. so as a result, what we have in place are still flash flood concerns. the entire area, the base color here, the dark greens, flash flood watch in effect for all of us, until about 10:00. so again, the atmosphere is conducive to creating these very heavy dowrp pours -- downpours. then what we're dealing with until further notice are flood warnings in effect along the potomac basin, out in washington and frederick county. and this is an urban concern, flood warning for small streams around cecil county. and again, that is until 7:30 tonight. we'll keep you posted. a lot of developing situations with the weather. a frightening afternoon for people living on the eastern shore. wjz is live with first warning weather coverage. mike hellgren has more from chestertown. hi, mike. >> hi, kai. the national weather service would still have to determine whether officially there were tornadoes that touched down. we have more to show you now. eyewitnesses say that the funnel cloud was across the water here on the queen anne's county side, across the chestertown bridge. and it would go up and down and up and down. and they're about to describe to you those tense moments. >> reporter: these are the incredible images as a funnel cloud touches down on the eastern shore just before 1:00. >> just happened to move across the river here. and it was funnel clouds forming. and it kept getting closer. then all of a sudden, we could see the huge debris field. >> this put them on alert. >> we had to go right into the hallways because we didn't know what was going on. they kind of shuffled us in the hallway. and they had to sit there for an hour against the lockers. >> reporter: the path took what appears to be five tornadoes through parts of queen anne's county. >> the pictures we got in here are all from electronic iphones or cell phones. the pictures are pretty impressive to look at. most of the tornado pictures we see appears to be in the air and not on the ground. >> reporter: there was little to no damage reported as this wild weather ripped through the eastern shore. >> reporter: and a live look now at the sky. there are a lot of clouds around here. but things look pretty calm. emergency management officials tell us they've got a number of 9 11 calls as the storms come through. but again, we want to stress, we know of no injuries or really no damage at all because of these. if they were, indeed, because of tornadoes, very lucky here on the eastern shore today. reporting live in chestertown, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> stay with wjz and first warning weather for complete coverage. for instant updates and a live look at radar, log onto wjz.com. breaking news a moment ago. a judge in new york grants bail for dominique strauss-kahn, the head of the imf. it comes just hours after he was indicted by a grand jury. >> reporter: the 62-year-old is accused of sexually assaulting a maid in a new york city hotel. he has already resigned his post as the international monetary fund, saying in a statement, i want to devote all of my strength, all of my time, and all of my energy to proving my innocence. strauss-kahn has agreed to post a $1 million cash bail, wear an electronic monitoring bracelet and be confined in his daughter's manhattan house. the maid said when she entered the $3,000 a night suite to clean it, strauss-kahn came out of the bathroom naked, chased her down and forced her to perform a sex act. police are analyzing evidence for dna that matches strauss- kahn's. >> any kind of evidence that shows an association between the maid and the imf chief is going to be very important evidence. >> reporter: the man once seen as a leading french presidential candidate, could spend more than 25 years in prison, if convicted of the charges against him. ines feray, wjz eyewitness news. . >> reporter: and the judge will allow strauss-kahn out on $1 million cash bond. and he will be out on home detention. deadly poisoning. is the unibomber responsible for the deadly tylenol poisoning in the '80s. kosinski is serving a life sentence for six explosions. he is refusing to give the sample. sinai-lace -- cyanide-laced tylenol. will she or won't she? how about that? >> please tell me. >> in two minutes and 32 seconds, i will tell you the answer. how about that? >> awe. >> stick around. right now, we're looking at first warning live doppler radar. we've had tornado warnings as we've already told you on the eastern shore. we've had severe thunderstorm threats all the way through. have not had a lot of warnings. the thin, yellow box to the top of the screen. severe thunderstorm watch that really affects eastern pennsylvania. doesn't even affect maryland. we have not even had a severe watch box over us. this is a flood warning in effect until further notice, for areas of the streams and areas around frederick and montgomery counties. washington county. this area, actually, may be lifted about 4:39 this afternoon. so again, just until further notice. we have flood concerns out along the potomac basin in frederick and montgomery counties. 66% relative humidity with your dew point at 54. west/southwesterly wind. barometer, still pretty low. it will start rising as that low-pressure system continues to move away from the region. we have 60s in oakland. 77 on the shore. everyone in maryland, ranging really from the mid- to upper 60s to about the low 70s. as you can see, 72 in bel air. winds are coming from from -- in from the north and northwest. these winds are all going to start to uniformly start shifting into the south. as they start to pass into warm air. 77 in atlanta. and as we start to see clearing heading into saturday. we'll start to see some warming and less and less cloud cover. but this is the spin we're looking at. the spin is part of the low- pressure system that is moving up and to the north, really northeast. and it hasn't really been moving very slowly -- or very quickly. very slowly, in fact, it's been taking a week or so for it to move on out of here. and until it moves out of here, these warnings are going to be in effect. flash flood watches in the entire state. these flood concerns we talked about, and another flood concern for the stream in cecil county. high pressure will eventually build on in. we know the kept kent derby -- kentucky derby was two weeks ago. this horse here is making his way from the kentucky derby into the preakness. we're talking 80 degree on saturday. 83 on sunday. and with all of this moisture in the ground, you know what that's going to make for, humidity. and that's when a bad hair day is a good thing. >> well, because you're going to have your hat on. >> right. and you'll have the sunshine. you'll have a lot of moisture. but you'll be in the 80-degree range. after we get through tomorrow, lacks like things really start to look up. >> and you'll have your hat on. >> you'll have your hat on. degrees, mostly cloudy. hello, everyone. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about. rising waters claim their first life in mississippi. a man has died after being pulled from the floodwaters. and thousands of homes are already lost. karen brown reports with wjz with the impact of the disaster. >> reporter: when peter built his dream home in naches, he wanted it beside the mississippi. >> a nine-foot fence here under water. >> reporter: not in it. >> pretty devastating, having to move and having to come back and, you know... >> reporter: it took the restaurant owner three years to finish the house. but weeks for record floods to destroy it. >> i don't want to leave. >> you don't want to leave? >> no. >> why? >> i love my house. >> we pulled the boat up in what is normally their garage. and this is what is left of their kitchen. there's 18 inches of water here in this house. it's already six feet off the ground. the river is not expected to crest here until saturday, at 15 feet above flood level. >> 4,000 people like the trosclaires have been displaced in mississippi alone. and today, the first known casualty from the flooding happened in vicksburg. a 69-year-old man was pulled from the water and later died. >> this is our bedroom. >> reporter: in naches, the trosclaires are vowing to rebuild. >> it's going to be nicer when we get finished than it was. >> reporter: they're living in a neighbor's guest house and still running their popular restaurant. >> my business has been thriving lately. so that's good. >> reporter: the restaurant is packed with tourists coming to see the swollen mississippi, which is slowly consuming their home. in naches, mississippi, karen brown, wjz eyewitness news. >> mississippi governor haley barbour's home in yasu city is under water. 36 counties in the state are now eligible for fema grants. back here, several people report seeing tornadoes touching down this afternoon. wjz received some incredible images from viewers in queen anne's county. right now, ground crews are surveying the area for damage. so far, there are no recents of injuries -- reports of injuries. bob has a look at live doppler radar. bob? >> just got a report out of jacksonville, baltimore county, of penny-sized hail in that region. very cold air aloft. let's take a look at radar. we have a whole bunch of showers through the eastern sections of baltimore. and western harford county. take a closer look at a pretty good cell there. north of rock hall, moving right up the bay, toward the western sections of kent county and queen anne's county. and that strong cell moving to the east and most. -- middle east. another batch there, you see it. across eastern baltimore county. up toward jacksonville, madonna, bel air. moving off to the east/northeast. at 25 miles an hour. south of the city, very, very widely scattered shower activity. looks like this may be it overnight. the stuff doesn't appear to be growing now. that is good news. it looks like it may lose that. >> earlier today, we want to show you what happened on the eastern shore. as these cells move through that area, south through chestertown. they have tornado warnings in effect from 12:45 to 1:30. and those were funnel clouds. whether there were touchdowns. the weather service will go out there and investigate to see if there is any evidence of actual funnel clouds touching down. that would make it a tornado. we'll be updating any advisories and warnings that come out this afternoon. vic? >> thanks, bob. peace and stability. today, president obama issued challenges to countries who are attacking their own people. kai is in the newsroom with details of the president's speech at the state room. >> president obama speaks as there is uprising. he promises that the u.s. will reward companies that accept change and is already punishing companies that don't. >> we have stepped up our sanctions on the syrian regime. including sanctions announced yesterday on president hassad and those around him. >> president obama also announced he will forgive about $1 billion of egypt's debt to help the country rebuild after the death of hosni mubarak. >> the president also insisted israel withdraw from the bank and use the borders drawn before the 1961 war. this week, one of the victims' widows filed new documents against the government, saying she doesn't believe ivins acted alone. her change of position means her attorneys can search for evidence that might conflict with the fbi's investigation. ivins, took his own life before ever being charged in the attacks. an audiotape from osama bin laden. this could be the terror leader's final message. >> reporter: these scenes of protestors, rising up against their leaders, apparently caught the attention of osama bin laden. al qaeda released this audio message, said to be from bin laden, said to be from the uprisings. he says, i think the winds of change will blow over the entire muslim world, with permission from allah. bin laden calls on supporters to topple more tyrants and accuses rulers of manipulating the media to stay in power. save yoursves, he says, the opportunity is here. while u.s. officials hope protests like these lead to democratic reform, the al qaeda leader saw them as an opportunity to spread islamic principles. the tape comes, as the pakistani taliban promises to keep up attacks like this one, to avenge bin laden's death. the terror chief is believed to have made the recording inside his secret compound in abbottabad, where u.s. navy seals found and killed him. top u.s. officials say they found no evidence the pakistani government knew bin laden was hiding there. bin laden did not mention the united states in the 12-minute recording, and it's unclear if this is the terrorist's final message. tina kraus, wjz eyewitness news. >> u.s. officials are working to repair relations with pakistan after bin laden's death. but many pakistanis are angry that america launched the may 2nd raid without giving them any warning. today, a new report assigns blame for the deadliest mining accident in years. this killed 29 men. an independent investigation concludes it was a man made disaster, resulting from safety violations, by owner massey energy. they also conclude that upper big branch was a mine where the crew could doing do nothing to save itself. when the inevitable explosion happens. mare sein the newsroom with -- mary is in the newsroom with more on the announcement. >> avandia will no longer be sold at pharmacies, starting in november. the fda bases its decision on the findings for heart risks. it will only be available for three groups people, those who have been safely using it, those who can't control their blood sugar with other diabetes drugs and those who have been informed of avandia's risk, but still choose to take it. back to you, vic. >> mary, thank an accident at the beltway, that's on the southwest side. on the beltway itself, west side inner loop, delays there from 95 to liberty road. average speed about 40 miles an hour. top side of the inner loop, not much better. just bumper to bumper there from park heights avenue to harford road. as you can see, average speed, about 8 miles an hour. other accidents include philadelphia road, at hilldale, south maryland alt woodward avenue. southeast avenue. also, loch raven boulevard at lockwood. now, let's take a live look. you can see a lot of brake lights. this traffic report is brought [ crying ] i'm so sorry. >> reporter: brenda kerrigan was the only person to actually see the fight that prosecutors say directly caused the heart attack that killed daniel kerrigan. they argue that the man died of a longstanding heart condition. back to you, vic. >> thank you very much, jessica. >> brenda kerrigan testified that her son originally thought her son was faking when he collapsed. but mark was soon kneeling beside him, telling him he loved him and begging him to get up. an arizona mother is behind bars after she left her two daughters in the car while she partied all night. she faces two counts of child abuse. police say the two girls were found wandering the next day. officers say the woman was visibly intoxicated when she was arrested. >> how close is too close. mary says getting too close can be a recipe for disaster. stacy butler has more on a thin line between supporting a colleague. >> reporter: all of those hours means the more time you have with your colleagues. and the closer you become. close enough to have a work spouse? >> i see it all the time. >> reporter: the phrase is so common, it's now part of our lexicon. even wikipedia has a page. if the real spouse can become jealous of an office spouse. and women can actually be more troubled by emotional infidelity than by sexual infidelity. >> most women, including myself, worry more about the emotional attachment. what the other woman might mean to the man. >> renowned psychiatrist, dr. judith orlost said more people spend more time at the people at work than they do with their family, making it easier for them to cross the line. >> they are working all day. they have lunch. they get together. and they talk. and so, as a result, they get very, very close. it turns into an emotional affair, with they share more with the coworkers than they do with their spouse. >> reporter: and the spouse outside the office usually has no idea. >> i know who that is. in my case -- >> is this news to you? >> yes. [ laughter ] >> orlost says being a supportive coworker is one thing. but you know you've gone too far when you share things with your office spouse you have never said to your mate. >> you have a person listening to you complain about your spouse. so that's very seductive. >> that was stacy butler reporting. and work spouses aside, a new report finds that fewer people are getting married. but once they do, most are in it for the long haul. according to the u.s. census bureau, many people are waiting long tore get married. by the time they do walk down the aisle, they say less than half of those marriages end in divorce. too sacked too fly. that's what -- too fat to fly. that's what one woman was told. john slattery has the story. >> reporter: 30-year-old kelly tigman of new orleans says it was humiliating, being told she was too fat to fly. >> he was rude. it was in front of lots of people. >> reporter: it was in dallas over easter, says tigman. she and her mother were told by a gate agent, they each had to purchase two seats. >> and said that we were, in fact, too fat to fly -- >> too fat to fly. >> without an additional ticket. >> reporter: yet this was a return flight and they hadn't been stopped before. the gate agent said it was policy. >> i was asked, what size clothes i wear, how much i weigh. i gave the answers to those questions in front of a gateful of people, some of whom were snickering. >> tigman who was once heavier. they said, if a passenger cannot fit in a seat with the arm rests down, a second seat must be purchased. if the flight is not full, that added charge will be refunded. but she says she does fit in a seat. southwest later apologized, refunded their tickets and gave them free vouchers. passengers at la guardia said she got a raw deal. >> as long as she can fit in the seat, she should be allowed to fly. >> as long as she fits. >> i think if people are rather large, you have to take accountability for their size and buy two tickets. >> if, in fact, she fit within the arm rests, it's a different ball game altogether. >> reporter: last year, movie director kevin smith was ejected saying he was too large to fly. the airline later apologized. manager says the actor is virtually comatose after being found unconscious more than a week ago. they say he overdosed on painkillers. he is probably known most for his acting on grease. bob turk is tracking first warning live doppler radar.
