southeast at around 25 miles an hour. there you see it. from new york -- york, from southern pennsylvania. also, south of the region, down through southern maryland, you folks will see this in the next hour or two. there is severe weather with na. around the baltimore region, just to the west. all of this is heading toward our general region over the next two hours. we do expect to see general activity in the region. we have a severe thunderstorm watch in effect at 9:00 tonight. they have severe thunderstorm warnings in effect. this morning's rains came through in about two hours. most of it fell in about 30 to 40 minutes. here is a look at some of the numbers, around the d.c. area. more than two inches for the most part. sykesville, about an inch and a quarter north of the city. bwi this morning came in with 1.18 inches. and yes, there's more to come tonight. we'll talk about when we expect to come in and leave. >> as bob said, this morning's violent storms dumped large amounts of rain. knocking out power, and turning roads to rivers. derek valcourt is live with the cleanup from maryland to washington, d.c. derek? >> reporter: those storms so loud, they woke a lot of people up this morning. left a lot of destruction all over maryland. and put more than 120,000 people across the state today without power. >> reporter: early morning storms hit fast and hard from baltimore to washington. fierce lightning and strong winds toppled trees around the region. this one at 29th street and st. paul. this also damaged some buildings, also bringing down this barn. but it was the driving rains that did the damage. wjz set this. and another viewer snapped this photo early in the morning on wolf street in the fells point area, where waters covered the roads. in washington, those flash floods caused major problems. the driver of this car will never forget getting caught in the storm. >> a wall came. i got out. and the water must have been moving very fast. because there wasn't no roads. >> reporter: the water levels were about 15 to 20 feet higher than they are right now. and it would completely cover the road up to our knees right now. and it went down as quickly as it went up. >> reporter: rain and wet roads may have been a factor in several. including this one. >> for a minute, all you saw was a big white smoke, like a bomb. >> reporter: medics had to rush several people to the hospital. >> reporter: most of the power outages were to our south in the montgomery county area. this morning, bge reports, they lost power to some 20,000 people. but at this hour, they are still working to restore power to some 2,000 homes in our area. we're live, derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> stay with wjz for coverage. for a look at live radar and updated coverage, log onto wjz.com. rain or shine, the preseason kicks off in just a few hours, that excitement is building. wjz is live outside m&t bank stadium. jessica kartalija just finished with the return of football. >> reporter: everybody is hoping for more shine than rain out here. and everything looks good from our vantage point here. everybody looks good to nab that perfect tailgate being spot. >> reporter: just hours before kickoff. >> how pumped are you for this game? >> pretty excited. we want to see what the hype is about. >> like i said, it's going to be big. >> reporter: across town, bars and restaurants gear up for the preseason crowd. >> basically, we're fully staffed. everyone is trained really well to kind of handle the crowds and deal with everything. >> august again, typically a slow month for the city. and we're very excited to have football come on board. >> reporter: and some of the bars and restaurants we spoke with last year said last year was such a great season, with us making it to the play-offs and the year before. they said they're really prepared for what the preseason games will bring. and they say it's a good indicator of what is to come for football season. we'll head out and touch base with some fans. we're live at m&t bank stadium. we're getting very excited out here. >> i can tell. sports director mark viviano will have tonight's matchup tonight at 5:00. our special live coverage of the ravens-carolina panthers game begins at 7:13. a man they believe has terrorized residents in three states over the last few months. joel brown reports from leesburg, virginia. >> reporter: customs agents arrested 33-year-old elias azubam in atlanta. >> identifying was accomplished by good, old-fashioned police work. >> he is wanted for at least 18 attacks in three states. five of the stabbing victims died. police believe the spree sarted on may 24th in flint, michigan. with the murder of david motley. >> david was one of the sweetest people you'd ever want to meet. >> 14 stabbings took place. but the attackers' most recent stabbings may have been this weekend. in toledo, ohio. >> he was just stabbed. >> reporter: the suspect is linked to three attacks here in leesburg, virginia. last tuesday night, police say he stabbed a teenager who was jogging in the area. the young man made it to this gas station. and the clerk called 911. >> police in arlington, virginia, pulled abu elazam last week for a traffic stop but let him go. he has ties to both. but is an israeli citizen who was trying to board a flight to tel aviv. nearly all ofs this victims were black men, attacked at night, without warning. >> obviously filled with hate and violence. but what exactly was driving him is what what we need to find out. >> reporter: detectives from all three straits are converging onto atlanta to bring him to justice. >> joel brown, wjz eyewitness news. >> the victims range in age from 17 to 60 years old. baltimore coupley fire investigators are sifting through the ashes, trying to figure out what started a house fire that killed a woman in windsor mill. sky eye chopper 13 is over this just after noon. firefighters found the victim just inside the home. her identity is not being released at this time. the cause remains under investigation. the brother of a woman found dead in a trash-filled garage in riverside said his sister was in the wrong place at the wrong time. denise is in the newsroom with more and the first remarks from the family. >> reporter: well, kitua said his sister was not the drug user living in squalor that he thought she was. police say the body friday. police say the murders were drug-related. he says his sister has never sold or done drugs. in fact, she was collecting clothes and household items for people in need in her native congo. that is why he said the house and garage were filled with stuff. kai? >> denise, thank you. a texas man and woman are being charged with the slayings. new details in the crash that killed a maryland man and a u.s. senator. after two days, investigators finally make it to the site. andrea gusty reports from anchorage. a pilot said when he saw the hand waving from the wreckage, he was shocked anyone could survive the crash. first responders say there was little communication. only victims asking for pain medication. the single-engine plane has no flight box or data recorder. so they are relying on interviews with survivors to piece together what happened. >> we did interview some of the survivors, but due to their medical condition, we were unable to conduct those investigations today. >> reporter: ofaviators chop ared to the area -- choppered to the area, and hiked the rest of the way. >> the left wing is folded back at about a 45-degree angle. and slightly intrudes into the cabin area. >> the four survivors, 13-year- old willy phillips, jr., is in good condition. former nasa administrator, sean. his son both in serious condition. the autopsies of senator ted stevens, the pilot terry smith, bill philips, sr., dana tindal, and her 16-year-old daughter cory tindal, have been performed. and their bodies have been released. 56-year-old william sr. of germantown was a lobbyist and a lawyer. his son survived the crash. tense moments for bwi airport. the flight had to make an emergency landing in ohio. flight 807 landed safely in dayton. passengers were put on another plane that arrived safely in baltimore. let's check on the roads with sharon gibala at wjz traffic control. a lot calmer this morning, right? takes all the hands it can get. >> reporter: in the law between downpours, it is raining oyster shells. and much of those doing the work are prison inmates who are finishing up their time in a nearby facility. >> reporter: but inmates have helped clean old shells. and in the lab, biologists have raised microscopic oyster larvae which gives spat to the shells. >> i didn't know all of that stuff, how they stick to the shells. it's really amazing. >> reporter: becauseault of -- all of those baby oysters are heading into the wild. >> reporter: working to restore oysters helps more than the bay. >> they learned some technical skills. but they learn other skills, soft skills, how to get along with coworkers, how to get along with supervisors, how to take care of tools and equipment, those kind of things that are meaningful in any kind of job. >> yeah. i like doing it. i don't mind hard work. >> it's good to help out, for once in my life. >> reporter: and if they take hold in protected sanctuaries, maybe a healthier chesapeake in the years to come. >> reporter: besides working with oysters, maryland inmates have also been taking on other environmental jobs, like planting trees and york, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. >> reporter: general motors ceo is stepping down. ed whittaker says he has accomplished his goal of bringing the once bankrupt automaker to profitability. today, gm posted its second straight. whittaker will step down september 1st. he'll be replaced by gm board member daniel ackerson who will become the fourth ceo in just 18 months. the employment picture is bleak. they rose to the highest level in almost six months. employers are still cutting their payrolls. cisco systems added to anxiety. it slipped 10% after sales did delivered. for a complete look at the slide show, log onto wjz.com. a tornado warning issued just a few minutes ago. extreme northeastern sections of frederick county. and northwestern sections of carroll county. right around the taneytown area. this particular cell is a strong cell. moving to the southeast. at around 25 miles an hour. so you folks an extreme northeastern sections. look inside this cell. let's see how big this cell is. as we take a look at it, it's got a -- 70% chance of hail. there you see it. barlow, bridge. and that area in there. take shelter. this storm could produce a possible tornado. there's some rotation to it as well. we're going to look inside the cell as well. we go to the velocity. if you look at this key up here, you see winds to the red there. see the green and the red going away. so this area right here. west of taneytown. there's taneytown. right in that region. this particular area will zoom in even closer. hopefully a couple of other places in there. bridgeport, keysville, long veil, this whole area. perhaps a possible tornado in that region. as rotations being indicated on radar. it's possible a funnel cloud comecould come up at any point. if you are in this region, take shelter. that's the smartest thing to do. get in a basement, away from windows. get into a strong portion of your house. like i said, away from windows, in case that storm does produce tornadoes. looks like it's moving more to the east and southeast from the west. right around this area. right in there. right with that little area right there, between bridgeport. as well as seeing the possible rotation. up in carroll county now. that's where the strongest of this cell is located. emmitsburg. the boundary line between cowell and frederick county. already, heavy rain occurring. let's look inside that cell. with doppler radar which shows you clearly what goes on inside this storm. and once again, we'll start seeing, right in there. through the green, the red. you have winds going from the radar site and away from the radar site. that's the possibility of rotation. and that could produce a tornado four points over bridgepoint. that's in extreme northern sections of carroll county. and northeastern sections of frederick county. here's what you need to do. as i said, stay away from windows. protect your head and body. get out of windows and glass. get out of mobile homes. if you have a safer place to go, there certainly is rotation in this. that's why they are issuing tornado warnings. when they see this inside these individual thunderstorm cells. and this has produced that. you can see it. we'll keep tracking this. let's go back to the actual storm itself. there's the area. emmitsburg, to bridgeport. four points to madders. and we'll show you what else is going on in that region. we have a whole line of storms from york county, causing flood washing -- warnings, from york, pennsylvania. now into northern frederick. and it's getting skinnier as you head into washington county. this is moving southeast at 25 miles an hour. i do expect these storms to be located in the baltimore county area, in the next 20 to 30 minutes, particularly northern baltimore county. that particular cell will be headed to the westminster area. central and north central. once again, we'll keep tracking it. and hopefully we won't have to worry about this much longer. the tornado warning does continue officially until 5:00 this afternoon for that particular area. it's possible you might see a rotation forming in the tornado. in that location. the rest of the region, temperatures have been holding a lot cooler today with all of the rain this morning with 83. southeast winds at 6. barometer currently falling right now. around the rest of the region. 70s. low to mid-80s. we have sunshine earlier. that's bringing storms to the region. because of the instability created by the storms. winds now, generally on the light side. these storms going to get very, very strong. storms that came through last night, came down extremely quickly. they moved through. that's going through the region this afternoon. has swarmed in through pennsylvania. and that's what we had to deal with. over the next 24 hours, we stayed rather cool, probably getting not even to 80 degrees tomorrow. believe it or not. it's still on the humid side. and still a slight chance of the shower. most of the weekends will be generally dry. only mid-80s. east winds on the bay. 5 to 10, 15 knots. chances of showers. maybe a thunderstorm, particularly early on. once again, the forecast for our region, showers showers and thunderstorms early. a low near 70. tomorrow, sunshine and clouds. temperatures getting back up to 80 degrees. nothing more than a shower. once again, tornado warning continues for a little portion of extreme northeastern frederick county. and northwestern sections of the frederick and carroll counties. officially at 5:00. let's go back to that region. it's a little box here. right in through here. just to the northwest of westminster. particularly around emmitsburg. down through taneytown. that's where we saw the rolling river. there is the monocacy river. once again in that system. and see what's going on. in the current view. we still have some rotation, right in through here. right around bridgeport and four points. right along the frederick- carroll county line. and that is showing rotation. so there is a possibility of a funnel cloud or rotation in that. >> okay, bob. thank you. still ahead on warning is in effect. but two areas with a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for much of central maryland right now. outside, it is hot and sunny in some areas. but storms are here in somiairs -- some areas. bob is here now with an updated weather report. >> a few moments ago, they issued a severe thunderstorm warning. we'll take a look at the maps. showing you the activity coming from the north and northwest. particularly between emmitsburg and taneytown. right in through here, north of westminster. in fact, the rotation was indicated on radar this little box area, right there, taneytown. this storm right here. this is what doppler radar allows you to do. it allows you to look inside the cell to see where the winds are coming from. and here, we see the rotation coming. going from keysville, courthouse mill, these areas, probably around keysville to courthouse mill -- crouse mill. southwest to taneytown. you see that green. and also the red. so in
