the prosecution has changed her mind. she now believes the mother was also a victim. >> in the being, i think i shared the view of a lot of people. that we should just lock her up and throw away the key. that any mother that would allow her child to be starved to death must be a cold, unfeeling person. >> reporter: ria ramkissoon testified against queen antoinette and two cult members. after two years in jail, the young woman will now get out on five years' probation, on strict rules. >> she has been brainwashed. these three people are manipulative murderers. and now she's starting to realize that yes, she was really sucked in and duped by these people. >> reporter: ria ramkissoon will be going to a live-in treatment facility that is christian-based out of state. if she completes that treatment and follows all of the other conditions of her probation, she will not have to return to prison. >> reporter: ramkissoon's mother never gave up on her daughter. >> it's my child. and i think everybody would say the same thing. you know, she shouldn't be in there. you know, under the circumstance and everything. she shouldn't be in there. but then the law is the law. >> reporter: there is one very odd condition of ramkissoon's probation. she requested it. it that if her son is ever resurrected from the dead, all of these charges and convictions all go away. >> the judge plans to call ramkissoon to court in july to be sure she is complying with all of the treatment ryed. -- required. the nfl announces its punishment for nfl quarterback ben roethlisberger, after he violated the league's conduct policy. jessica kartalija has more. >> reporter: the nfl is suspending roethlisberger for six games without pay for his role in the alleged sexual assault, which means he will not be in a steelers uniform when baltimore plays them. last week, prosecutors in georgia decided not to charge roethlisberger after a 21-year- old college student accused him of sexually assaulting him in march. >> all right, jessica, thank you. the pennsylvania state police has also told the trooper who worked as roethlisberger's assistant to quit because the incident tarnished the image of the state police. right now, a frantic search for at least seven people, after a fiery explosion on an oil rig in the gulf of mexico. the coast guard says the offshore drilling platform is tilting badly and threatening to topple over. >> reporter: the coast guard rushed seven people to the hospital. after this explosive fire on an offshore oil rig. they're still searching for 11 workers. the deep water horizon is more than 50 miles up louisiana's coastline. officials say it was too early to know what caused it. >> let's lean -- it's leaning very badly. the coast guard has concerns it will fall over. >> reporter: there were 126 people on the plat platform. most were evacuated safely. environmental teams were standing by. ready to begin cleanup work. the deep water horizon was built in 2001. and sits in water almost a mile deep. it's owned by a drilling company based in houston. it's now under contract. terrell brown, wjz eyewitness news. >> and the last 10 years, there have been 69 offshore deaths and 858 fires and explosions. >> the family of the fire cadet who died wants the city to pay for her death. rachel wilson died during a live training exercise in 2007. she was unable to get out of the burning house when the fire escalated. she was with the city fire department for about three months at the time of her death. a lawsuit claims the training exercise violated dozens of federal safety standards and was indifferent to safety. the wilson family is suing for $35 million in damages. new details tonight in the investigation of the weekend shooting death of a frostburg state university student. derek valcourt is live with more on a link between one of the victims and a former girlfriend. derek? >> reporter: those new details are out about the events that may have led to an off-campus confrontation. 21-year-old tyrone hall is charged in the first-degree murder of the shooting death of brandon carol and the attempted murder shooting of hartridge. this involves hartridge's girlfriend. heartridge and briton had restraining orders against each other. >> candlelight vigils were held last night for brandon carroll in the school's gym, where he played for the school's basketball team. an armed robbery in towson leads towson students to their safety. neighbors in the community are also worried. >> reporter: within a mile of towson university, students say up to seven armed men kicked in their front door on burk avenue. >> one guy had gone. and they just came up to him. told them that they were going to shoot him. and ran out of the place and picked up whatever they wanted. >> reporter: it happened early tuesday morning when sean hughes' roommate was home alone. he says they took four laptops, then two video game stations. >> you know, it's a scary thing. never had to go through anything like that. >> no one was injured. and police say they have no clear suspect description. >> police are still investigating. but right now, they say it's unclear if the suspect and victims knew each other. >> craig garrett has lived in this area for years. and says it's safe. so this is worrisome. >> i'm concerned for his safety. for people here in this community. for the students in that house. >> reporter: this robbery comes just weeks after two towson university students were robbed at gunpoint in their dorm room. the suspect was charged with that crime. >> police say they believe this recent robbery was an isolated incident. and hope residents will continue to feel safe. >> this appears to be isolated, that the suspects apparently knew to go to this specific location to get the merchandise items that they took. >> reporter: in towson, andrea fujii, wjz eyewitness news. >> police say this robbery is not connected to the robbery in the towson university dorm. if you have any information, you're asked to call baltimore county police. >> well, a break in the sunny, mild weather we have been enjoying outside right now. it's cool and gray, with some rain falling in some areas. wjz has weather and traffic together. we'll talk to sharon in just a second. but bob turk is here with updated numbers from first warning weather. bob? down. >> they have four people on board. that is four. >> an hd130 hercules craft dropped first. before they could pull the three men and one woman from the icy waters. they have been stranded until their rescue. one man died, possibly from a blow to the head suffered as he abandoned ship. the other three were treated for hypothermia. but thanks to survival suits, they are expected to be okay. at last check, the three men who survived were being treated at an alaska hospital. all three are listed in stable condition. stocks struggled a little today on wall street. markets dipped this afternoon ceo made a number of key announcements at a kansas city plant earlier today. first, gm repaid $1.3 billion in government loans. and that was five years ahead of general. gm also plans to invest more than $250 million at two of has factories to build a new line. in a move to fight counterfitters. the treasury unveiled an update today. it has two new features, including a 3-d security ribbon. and >> reporter: pope benedict is promising church action against abusive priests. during his weekly appearance at the vatican, he made his most public speech. >> it's about time. he should have spoke out a long time ago. >> he talked about men who suffered abuse in malt a. he said he prayed with them over their suffering. >> reporter: benedict himself is accused of failing to remove and punish priests when he ran the office that investigated sex abuse before he was named pope. some whoa listened -- who listened to his comments said he took a good first step. >> i think it's really important that he speak. >> by making public statements about this, he -- i think apologized on behalf of the entire catholic church. >> reporter: last week, the vatican issued guidelines for the first time, telling expected tomorrow. state police are looking into how the university handled its investigation. kai joins us now live in the newsroom with details. >> reporter: john mckenna, and benjamin dunit were charged with assaulting police officers after a basketball game in march. this video was shot by another student and shows officers beating mckenna apparently without provocation. the video led to the charges against the students being dropped in four prince george's county police officers being suspended. the university also had a surveillance camera trained on the scene. that video was subpoenaed by the attorney for the two students. university officials want to know why campus police didn't turn over that footage immediately. and why a portion of the video is missing. vic? >> thank you. new at 5:00, wjz will show you some of the surveillance video in question. an update to the breaking news we brought to you yesterday afternoon. police have identified an anne arundel county teenager who went missing in the patuxent river and later drowned. witnesses say 15-year-old eddie knudson was swimming across the river when he began to have difficulty with the current. he was eventually pulled under water. scientists found his body about two hours later. the air trouble in europe is finally getting better. as rita nissan reports for wjz, about 20,000 flights have been given the all-clear for takeoff today. however, it will take years for the airline industry to recovery. recover. >> reporter: planes back in the skies over europe are finally giving stranded passengers a shot at getting home. >> we got up this morning and they told us that our flights were canceled. then an hour later, they hustled up and said, there may be another flight. >> reporter: the ash cleared just in time for dana norris's clip to cleveland. >> i just wish i wasn't the first day out. but should be all right. we're going to go and see elise's grandmother. >> reporter: they're the lucky ones. the ash cloud triggered more than 100,000 flight cancellations around the globe. and moving the massive backlog of passengers will take several days. >> this is horrible. british airways won't help me. i've been here five times. five times. >> reporter: if the skies stay clear, getting stranded customers on planes will be a short-term problem for the airlines. but recovering at least $1.7 billion, that could take up to three years. >> reporter: some airlines and even passengers are questioning whether european governments kept the air space closed longer than necessary. >> i think when the investigations are over, they'll realize that we could have flown. >> reporter: scientists analyzing air samples say governments did make the right safety calls. this mom didn't want to risk it. >> i'm glad they erred on the side of caution. >> reporter: that caution means some air space restrictions are still in place. but for the first time in nearly six days, most of europe's air traffic is at this time couple should only -- argued that the couple should only pay a small amount for the compensation. a strange twist in the search for an ohio mom who has been missing since saturday. police want to question a person of interest in the case. but as maggie rodriguez reports, he is missing, too. >> police in xenia, ohio have identified with a man in this surveillance video, as 42-year- old tray hutcherson. >> they're in the same place. and it is on more than one occasion. and it appears that they know each other. and it appears that this individual may have information that may be helpful to us. >> police say hutcherson has also been missing for several days. tiffany tian, the wife and mother of a 1-year-old, was last seen saturday morning, withdrawing cash from an atm, as she set out for a day of shopping. when she didn't come home, her husband david called police. >> the family members say they don't know hutcherson or why she would be with them. police say tian's suv was found sunday at a park, with a flat tire and the keys locked inside. >> police have classified the investigation as suspicious and won't rule out the possibility that tian is in danger. medical researchers say they may have inbound the link between hormone therapy and an increased risk of breast cancer. mary joins us live from the newsroom. >> the study found that women taking hormone replacement therapy are more likely to experience an increase in breast density. that density is a known factor for developing breast cancer. the findings are consistent with previous research that showed women taking hormones were 25% more likely to develop breast cancer. researchers also found that a decline in breast density does lower that risk. and breast density does decrease as women get older. but hormone therapy can prevent that. >> those findings were presented today at the annual meeting for the cancer research. experts call it an unseen hazard. an open wind. >> he literally was my best friend. we did everything together. we were inseparable. >> reporter: for ashley wrack and her son parker, a warm spring day last may was supposed to be a day of celebration. >> we were having and i knew that was the color parker was wearing that day. and... and then i ran to the slider door to see what had happened. >> is he breathing? >> i don't know. is he breathing? >> i need you to check. is he breathing? >> no! >> no, he's not! >> parker was airlifted to a hospital, where doctors initially said his vital signs were good. he was rushed into surgery. >> about an hour later, they came back out and said that they lost him, that he just couldn't let go. >> every year in this country, 4,000 children are injured in window falls and 12 children die. in just the past few weeks, children have fallen from windows in pennsylvania, virginia, nebraska and texas. >> screens are meant to keep bugs out, not kids in. they're not strong enough to withstand the weight of a child who might be pushing on it. >> children age 4 and under are most at risk for falling out of windows. parents should install window guards for extra protection. outside right now, it is gray. and a bit jessop, there's a crash. washington boulevard, at 175. and one more annapolis, west street at 50. meantime, utility problems have crain highway closed. i'm sorry. 8th avenue, i should say, your alternate is going to be route 2, richie highway. 82, northbound in the red, from chase street to falls road. it will take you about five minutes to get through. that 22 miles an hour, your slowest spot on the west side inner loop. between 795 and 95. there's a look at the delay you're going to find on the top side. this one running on the loop between stevenson and harford. it will take you pickup truck. the victim's car was severely damaged. investigators say she was killed instantly. police say they hope the accident will serve as a reminder to those hauling trailers to make sure that they are secure. authorities say the crash happened during rush hour. they are surprised more cars were not involved. a south florida teenager who was doused with gasoline was set on fire and returned to school. jessica kartalija has more. >> it's been a long road to recovery for victim michael brewer. cameras showed brewer and his parents as he returned to school for the first time since the violent attack. back in october, three teens intentionally doused him with gasoline and set him on fire. school officials say brewer's classmates are excited about his return. >> three teens have all been charged as adults for the attempted second-degree murder. each faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted. an oregon couple is at the center of a legal battle, being blamed on a sleeping already. adam was accused of assaulting his wife while he was sleepwalking. doctors say he may have a rare sleeping disorder that may cause him to turn violent wile in -- while in his sleep. they have ordered that they live separately for now. police hope this could help solve other unsolved mysteries. >> last month, at the age of 66, rodney alcala showed no emotion when he received his third death sentence. finally exhausting his search. now, a boxful of photographs, apparently taken by alcalla, indicates there may be more victims. police found 226 images of women and young boys in a seattle locker and believe at least four of them are additional victims. and some may be new yorkers as well. alcala lived in new york twice in the 1970s. this is how he looked then. the nypd is going through the images to see if any of them resemble someone they know or knew. the aging killer is already linked to the forensic evidence. 1971 murder of cornellia controly in her apartment. and a suspect in the murder of ellen holder who was killed in 1987. >> new york city police department had declined to release the photographs initially. but decided they could yield new clues in those old cases. miss hawaii teen usa has died following a sudden stroke. the 18-year-old spent a week in a coma after collapsing while at her hawaii high school. doctors are puzzled by a stroke for a teen who had no problems prior to this. a new york judge sentences michael douglas's son to five years in prison on drug charges. his father and his grandfather, kirk douglas both wrote letters to the judge, asking
