The economy has grown for a full year now but the pace of growth has slowed significantly. We had a stronger First Quarter than a Second Quarter. What that makes us worried about is this will slow down even more and drag us into a doubledip recession. Reporter unemployment at 9. 5 with 25 Million People out of work or underemployed. Todays report on jobless claims is expected to show half a million americans filed for unemployment last week. The fourweek average is at its highest since last december. To repair the damage done, the economy has to add 320,000 u ne jobs every month. Thats five times greater than the number companies created in july. Until we start getting some of that confidence back if the system, its going to be very difficult to get things moving again. Reporter the recovery depends largely on consumer spending, which accounts for about twothirds of economic growth. But americans are cutting back and saving more. For the first time in eight years, the average credit card balance is less than 5,000. Thats good for their budget, but bad for the economy as a whole. And more bad news could come tomorrow. The experimental pills disrupt the gene causing tumors to shrink. A new study found the drug was effective in 80 of patients who have the gene. It worked for an average of seven months, giving those patients more time. Compared to chemotherapy, it works much better in melanoma and has less side effects. Ive been feeling pretty good. Reporter its not known how long the drug will work for chance, but so far its been extremely effective. Her cancer was actually sent into remission, allowing her to see the birth of her grandson.
