rolled across the country prevailed in yesterday's balloting. democratic and republican voters chose candidates in 12 states. votes that will have a powerful impact as democrats try to preserve their majority in congress. tara mergener is in washington with the latest details. good morning, tara. >> good morning, michelle. well, the battle lines were certainly drawn yesterday in key races. some of the big winners, gop women. arkansas senator blanche lincoln dodged defeat, barely. many expected her to fall victim to the anti-establishment hype that claimed former pennsylvania senator arlen specter last month. instead she'll face republican john boozman in november. >> your message is loud and clear that washington, washington needs to work for us. >> reporter: in california, a pair of female former ceos coasted to victory. billionaire and ex-ebay executive meg whitman dug into her own fortune to bag the republican nomination for governor. while carly fiorina, the former hewlett-packard chief, won the right to challenge senator barbara boxer in the fall. >> california will now be offered two candidates at the top of our ticket, who have actually created jobs and cut costs, and we look forward to taking on the two career politicians on the other side. >> reporter: in south carolina, allegations of extramarital affairs weren't enough to derail state representative nikki haley. she won a spot in a runoff later this month to decide the republican nomination for governor. >> so we knew from the very beginning it was us versus the establishment. >> reporter: the biggest tea party effect was seen in nevada. state republicans tapped small government low tax crusader sharon angle to take on senate majority leader harry reid, setting the stage for an epic showdown. >> we're going to tell harry reid that there's no such thing as being too big to fail. >> reporter: and some analysts say this is good news for reid because angle defined herself as a niche candidate and will have to break out of that mold to win this fall. michelle, back to you. >> tara mergener in washington, thanks. turning now to the oil leak still gushing in the gulf. this morning bp is backing away from a prediction by its chief operating officer who says the leak would be contained to a relative trickle by next week. this is just-released video of the leak taken last thursday, before the containment cap was installed. lawmakers pressured bp to make the video public. the company says it's now capturing half of the oil that's leaking. but a preliminary assessment from a group of researchers indicates that's not so. president obama was making his fourth trip to the gulf next monday and tuesday. meanwhile, marine scientists have found a 100 foot-thick layer of oil more than 1,000 feet below the surface. manuel gallegus has that part of the story. >> reporter: new tests reveal oil is moving in plumes thousands of feet below. something bp had questioned. >> bottom line is, yes, there is oil in the water column. that's confirmed. at the sites where we've done those analyses. >> reporter: even in low concentrations, the oil could have a devastating impact on the food chain. >> we're making no allusions that this is anything other than a catastrophe or addressing it as such. >> reporter: in the effort to compensate for loss of income, bp says it's already paid out $84 million in claims across the gulf. bp says 7,900 businesses and individuals just here in louisiana have received payouts. louisiana's sport fisherman captain chris callaway received $5,000 from bp. it won't even begin to cover his losses. >> drop in the bucket. it's nothing. we turn that in four days. >> reporter: what's his outlook for business? >> bleak. none. >> reporter: bp is putting thousands to work. besides cleanup crews and boaters helping offshore, helicopter operators are hired to shuttle 1,500 pound bags of dirt to fill in eroding barrier islands. still, callaway tells us many fishermen, especially the larger boats, are leaving. heading to texas, where it's still okay to fish. manuel gallegus, cbs news, venice, louisiana. this morning in pakistan, militants attacked a convoy carrying supplies to nato forces in afghanistan. the convoy was hauling military vehicles such as humvees when it was attacked near islamabad. at least six people were killed. many of of the supplies and much of the fuel used by u.s. troops in afghanistan is trucked through pakistan. this morning, the united nations security council is expected to approve new sanctions against iran's suspected nuclear program. it would be the fourth such resolution approved by the u.n. the latest target, 40 new iranian companies with links to the government. it would ban iran from activity related to developing a missile capable of delivering a nuclear weapon. and expand the arms embargo against iran. speaking in ecuador yesterday, secretary of state hillary clinton said these sanctions are the toughest yet. >> these are the most significant sanctions that iran has ever faced. and the amount of unity that has been engendered by the international community is very significant. >> iran has always claimed that its nuclear intentions are peaceful, that it's not seeking nuclear weapons. peruvian police have until this weekend to file criminal charges against joran van der sloot. authorities say van der sloot confessed to the murder of a young peruvian woman, stephany flores, in his hotel room. it's reported flores saw information about missing american natalee holloway on his computer. van der sloot is the prime suspect in holloway's disappearance. but has never been charged. the haitian government has released dramatic video of the devastating earthquake that struck in january. this video was taken from inside the presidential palace, which was partially destroyed. overall, more than 300,000 people were killed, countless homes and buildings were destroyed or damaged. on the "cbs moneywatch," mixed morning for stocks in asia. ashley morrison is here with more. >> good morning to you, michelle. those asian markets edged down today on renewed worries over europe's economic stability. japan's nikkei fell more than 1% while hong kong's hang seng traded mostly lower before a late-day rally. today wall street gets the latest on the economy from the feds. tuesday the dow snapped a two-day losing streak. the blue chips finished up 123 points. the nasdaq gave back 3. fed chairman ben bernanke will testify before the house budget committee later on this morning. he's expected to urge lawmakers to come up with a plan to reduce budget deficits. in an interview monday, he predicted the economy will avoid a double-dip recession, but that the recovery will be slow. new rules aimed at preventing another stock market flash crash are expected to go into effect in the next few days. they call for u.s. stock exchanges to briefly halt trading of some stocks that make big swings. the new rules came about after may 6th market plunge when the dow lost nearly 1,000 points in less than a half hour. gm is recalling close to 1.5 million vehicles because of a potential fire hazard. the problem is suvs, pickup trucks and cars and makes including buick, cadillac, chevrolet, gmc, hummer and saturn. the vehicles impacted are from the 2006 to 2009 model years. and gold jewelry is about to get more expensive. the precious metal is now selling at a record $1,245 an ounce. investors continue to rush to the safety of gold as an investment, as they worry about the health of the economy. so, michelle, i guess that gold bracelet you may have had your eye on just got a little more expensive. >> dang. ashley morrison here in new york. ashley, thanks. and just ahead on the "morning news," anger over the fatal shooting of a mexican teen by a border patrol agent. plus, buckle up, a bumpy landing aboard a classic plane. you're watching the "cbs morning news." >> it was may 1st. that was the end. >> reporter: the company owner david walter filed a claim with bp may 6th for $350,000 he expected to make in may, june and july. he says the first office lost his paperwork. the second told him he didn't qualify. and the third told him to hire an accountant. robert grant's accounting firm is handling claims for more than two dozen small businesses in alabama. have any of the small businesses who have come to you, have any of their claims been paid as yet?
