we explore the potentially dangerous intersection of children and all-terrain vehicles. >> reporter: it was an oversized birthday present for britney spears' little niece maddy aldridge. her mother, britney's younger sister jamie lin, recording her daughter's reaction to the kid's offroad vehicle. >> oh my gosh! >> reporter: tonight, the 8-year-old is recovering in a louisiana hospital after getting into an accident in what is believed to be the very same vehicle. local police say maddy was riding around on her parents' property sunday afternoon when she careened into a pond. police say her mother and other family members were watching as the vehicle became instantly submerged. they tried to she was trapped under water by a seat belt and safety netting. ambulance workers reportedly arrived within two minutes. freeing her and airlifting her to a hospital. britney taking to twitter the next day saying, need all wishes and prayers for my niece. tonight, those prayers apparently answered. the family giving a statement to "people" magazine saying, maddy regained consciousness this afternoon, and doctors were able to remove the ventilator and she's awake and talking. a spokesperson for polaris, the company that makes the very maddy is believed to have been driving, told abc news, the safety of our riders is our absolute top priority. our thoughts and prayers are with the family. the accident, a living nightmare for young mother jamie lin spears who became pregnant with maddie when she was just 16. the pregnancy leading to the cancelation of her nickelodeon show "zoe 101." >> reporter: after maddie was born, jamie lin left hollywood to raise her and pursue a country music career. ♪ >> reporter: just last year her brother and famous sister introducing her at the grand ole opry. >> jamie lynn spears! >> reporter: the polaris rvr-170 maddie got for her 7th birthday is designed for children 10 years and older. it costs nearly $5,000. >> so we're going to go and rip around the dunes. >> reporter: they've become hugely popular with kids. youtube filled with videos of youngsters showing them off. >> it looks exactly like the big razors. >> reporter: even reviewing them. >> the only place i have trouble is on big hills. i could use a bit more power for everywhere else i can go no problem. >> reporter: the atv manufacturing industry is worth $6 billion a year. but offroad vehicles can be especially dangerous for kids. in 2015, almost 27,000 children under the age of 16 were treated in the emergency room for atv-related injuries. >> here's the thing. you're talking about a high-velocity vehicle that has a lot of weight and potentially a lot of power as well as speed. so when you put those things together, you have a perfect storm for a major trauma. when you talk about what types of injuries, head injuries, fractures, lacerations, crush injuries. i mean, the list can be significant. >> reporter: but the best way to keep your kids safe, if they are going to ride, proper training. >> look where you're going. >> reporter: mike clump rides atv ride safe oklahoma. he teaches children as young as 7 years old how to ride safely. >> what when i'm talking to parents, if they make a decision i recommend they get the right size atv for that child, also they have all the appropriate safety gear that goes along with that. >> reporter: he says learning how to operate an offroad vehicle properly can mean the difference between life and death. >> as you look on this machine, he's got about three inches of clearance. if you put a small child on a machine like this, that's not tall enough to get that clearance, what happens when they go think a dip or a roll, that machine will actually bounce them over the handlebars and over the front. >> reporter: in 2015, 11-year-old kate bruggenschmidt was not wearing a helmet when she and her friends rode an adult-sized atv. >> that four-wheeler tipped over on kate and she died instantly from blunt force trauma. we thought we would see our daughter in four hours on the softball field. we never saw her again. >> reporter: her mother ashley wants to make sure it doesn't happen to anyone else. >> i think those four wheels give p security. they think they're a toy. unfortunately, they're killing and injuring our kids. >> reporter: unlike motorcycles and cars, atvs are unregulated with no laws about who can drive them. >> we're allowing kids to get on motorized vehicles that go 50 to 60 miles an hour and we're not giving them any training, requiring any safety gear. we're pretty much just saying, good luck. >> reporter: "nightline" highlighted the issues in 2010, visiting this track in upsate new york where kids as young as 6 were performing high-speed stunts. what's your favorite part? >> hitting the jumps. >> most kids like it because they see them -- they see the pros coming up like, whoa that guy went super high that guy went super far. then they're like, oh, dad, mom, i want to do that. >> they can go 60, 70 miles an hour. 30, 40-feet jumps. you got to be somewhat of daredevil to do this. >> reporter: even back then parents said accidents there were routine. and injuries seen by some as a badge of honor. >> i broke my wrist, i've broke my hand, i broke my tail bone before. broke a couple other bones. while we were there, a 16-year-old boy lost control of his atv going over one of the jumps. paramedics standing by. >> i was right behind him. i think the guy hit the tree and then the quad fell or him. that was pretty scary. >> reporter: the teen two two bones in his back. good news was that he was not paralyzed. >> it's all part of the sport. you accept that, i guess. it's part of it. >> reporter: 16-year-old high school football player tyler shellhavel wasn't so lucky. two days after playing the game of his life he went for an atv outing at a nearby state beach popular with atv riders. tyler went over a dune and his vehicle flipped. >> i loo my legs were wrapped around the back tire. it just looked like my entire torso wasn't even connected to my chest. i had no feeling or sensation. >> reporter: he became paralyzed from the waist down. >> these are preventible injuries. some of them with potentially devastating, long-term consequen consequences. you have to ask yourself, is it worth it? >> reporter: tonight as britney spears'
