today. thank you for joining us, i'm kimberly suiters. fire ripped through an apartment in laurel tonight. the flames tearing off a roof of the three-story fox rest apartments on briarwood drive. our cheryl conner is there live with more. cheryl, do we know how it happened? >> reporter: yeah, kimberly, we don't know a cause at this point but i can tell you it's still a very active scene out here. we're at fox rest apartments right here in laurel. and you can see the top of the building, that's a three-story apartment building. and you can tell that the focus of the fire was on that third level. this happened just before 9:00. several people having to evacuate the building, and we want to show you those heavy flames. we have video of the scene of the heavy flames justo been out here, again, for a couple of hours focusing on extinguishing the fire. they were able to do that and now working on some of the hot spots. everyone from what we understand was able to get out safely without being injured, but there was one firefighter that was taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, and out here tonight, the red cross is here trying to help people who are not able to go home for probably sometime, certainly not tonight. so they're walking around here. they're wrapped up in blankets and trying to get them hotel rooms. again, what we know is that several apartment buildings have been affected by a heavy fire just a couple of hours ago. we're at force fox rest apartments in laurel. again, no one inside that building fortunately injured, just one firefighter taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. kimberly, we're live in laurel and we'll send it back to you. >> cheryl, thanks for report. more breaking news right now this time from montgomery county. police discovered a man's body in malcolm king park in gaithersburg and are now investigating his death as a homicide. investigators say the body of 18-year-old christiane morales martinsburg at 58 degrees. overnight into tomorrow morning, by the time we get into the early sunrise hours, 63 in regan international airport in downtown d.c. as well. probably mid-60's. upper 50's in the outlying suburbs. great start in the upper 60's at 8:00. getting back up in the mid-80's. though, closer to noon, after a morning exercise, probably a good day to hit the pool with temperatures back in the mid to upper 80's tomorrow afternoon. kimberly? >> wow, stunning! awesome! thank you. metro's second big safe track surge is underway. metrostro's -- metro's, yes, for the next few weeks, there'll nobody rail service between roslyn and arlington national cemetery. two stations are also closed. our rich reeves with more on the impact to thousands of riders. >> reporter: call it the surge. >> i think we'll have delays and people will have to get off earlier. >> reporter: at minnesota avenue station, shuttle buses, not trains, are rolling point west to the eastern market station. >> this is where uber comes in handy. uber and anything else. >> reporter: the second surge means no trains between eastern market and the minnesota avenue and benning road stations. orange, blue and silver lines will be affected. the stadium armory and potomac avenue stations will be closed for 16 days. >> basically, i asked them, you know, can i get into the city? they said, no, you have to take a shuttle to eastern market. >> reporter: virginia will also be affected. no blue line or bus service from roslyn to arlington national cemetery. for many, this is just a dry run for a monday morning commute. >> it's going to be a lot of people right here, right there, right there, way up on buses. working the morning shift on monday in a downtown hotel. >> it'll be very hectic for the buses and everything. you have people that have evening shifts. it'll be a lot of traffic. >> reporter: metro is warning the shuttles could only accommodate three out of every 10 metro riders. georgia gray says it's her best option. >> even though i have to catch three buses to get to work -- if i catch the train, that'll be the best. >> reporter: riders think all that work and inconvenience will pay off. >> um, and i know there's a lot of work that needs to be done and unfortunately it just displaces all of these people. >> reporter: you'll see a lot more of this come monday morni morning. metro employees acting as guides helping riders to navigate the system. a lot of commuters saying they're going to be heading out early, one to two hours early on monday morning. in southeast washington, richard reeve for abc-7 news. >> unfortunately that's probably a pretty good idea. some commuters aren't taking their chances with safe track. many are trading the rails for two wheels. the washington area bicycling association says the number of bike riders is up by at least 60%, and they expect that number to rise with phase 2. capital bike chairs also becoming increasingly popular. >> we know that everyone is not going to be comfortable on big roads and so we want to make alternatives so it's an attractive option for people, when it works! >> the best advice experience riders offer is, if you think you want to tuft off your bike, it's best to stay -- dust off your bike, it's best to stay with traffic lights and use the bike lanes wherever you can, if you use bike share, dock every 30 say final farewells to their loved ones killed in that night club attack. the information emerging tonight is about more missed signals. records show omar mateen was kicked out of a prison training program in 2007. it was after he asked another recruit if he would tell if he brought a gun to school. the f.b.i. also confirms they were in fact notified by the gun shop that mateen wanted to buy body armor. they said they couldn't do a meaningful investigative follow-up. the victims of the night club terror attack were honored tonight by both orlando soccer teams. the orlando city of the mls filled section 12 of its stadium with 49 balloons. players wore purple hashtag orlando united t-shirts. in our area, the washington spirit and orlando pride honored the victims with a moment of silence and a special salute right at the 49th minute. cheryl conner takes us to the touching tribute. >> we'll have a moment of silence to remember those who lost their lives in the orlando tragedy. bit cooler by the bay. the water temperatures there in the chesapeake right now are 70-75, so rather comfortable and thanks for that photo, jen johnson. biking in the immediate d.c. metro again tomorrow morning, it'll be 68. good to get out there early as afternoon. mostly sunny skies. highs in the upper 80's. if you're deciding to head for a hike for your father's day, 64 when you get up and go out there early but it'll be in the mid-80's in some of the higher elevations out there. still low humidities. overall a very comfortable day in the nation's capital. it'll be a bit on the hot side. remember your suntan lotions, hats and sunglasses and you'll be just fine. high pressure in control throughout the day tomorrow. this is a look around 4:00 this model is showing a couple of showers popping up mainly in the mountains but overall, i think the high pressure will kind of keep those at bay. by the time we get into the next couple of days, we're watching the next cold frontal boundary. this'll slide into the region by the time we get into tuesday. tuesday morning, we're talking around 4:00 in the morning, have the chance for a couple of showers. that has frontal boundary pushes to the south tuesday afternoon. as of right now, we think that the heaviest shower and thunderstorm activity will be mainly focused south of d.c.. but we'll have the potential, though, for afternoon storms, even in and around the metro. still have a 40% chance for a few storms. highs on monday, remember the summer solstice starts at 6:34 p.m. that's exactly when the solstis is -- solstice is. 91 degrees on monday. first full day of summer has a chance of storms. we have a disturbance we're watching for the tail end of the work week. 40% chance for a few storms and showers on thursday. highs in the low 80's. some of those storms could it's a great day for an adventure. surprises are hiding around each corner. come chase thrills that lead in every direction. yet somehow
