of
Hurricane Sandy
keeping millions of people home on this monday. Good morning washington at 5 00 a. M. Starts now. Live and in hd, this is good morning washington, on your side. Good morning, washington. 5 01 is the time on this october 29. I am cynne simpson. I am steve chenevey. We have a full list of closures at the top of your screen, so keep an eye on that. We will have you coverage throughout the morning. Jacqui jeras as an update on the storm. From the
National Hurricane
center sandy has intensified a little, still a category one but the maximum winds are 85 miles an hour. The wind is huge. The
Tropical Storm
force winds between 39 and 73 miles an hour, extend out more and 500 miles from the center of the storm. So they are feeling that along the coastal areas already. The storm is 400 miles away from d. C. It will impact us all day. We will be going downhill. Anything you still have to do to prepare for the storm, that needs to be done now. Philip your bathtub, make sure anything loose outdoors has been secured. Its a good idea to spend a day in theless you arelood prone area. I want to talk about the waves. Two big thrifts from the storm will be the flooding and the wind. Adam caskey will be here in the second to talk about the flood threat. I want to talk about the wind. If its gusting between 15 miles an hour to 25 miles an hour right now. But by this afternoon it will pick up. The tree limbs could start coming down as well as power lines and large trees, if they are unstable with saturated soil. We will have a prolonged period of extreme wind. We are talking 2436 hours potentially. This will peak late this evening and tomorrow morning. The wind could reach 60 or 70 miles an hour. That is the gusts. Right now there are gusts of 20 miles an hour in manassas and 29 in quantico. Lexington park, 32
Miles Per Hour
gust. Theres a high wind warning in effect for pretty much the entire viewing area. That means the wind will be where we could see significant damage. Thats a significant win speaks today, the 30s and 40s, that is the sustained wind. Imagine a 40 mile per hour wind pushing on you. That is pretty significant. What our big concer the wind will stay strong through tomorrow morning and then we will start to see that taper off. By midday tomorrow i think we will see improvements. From 6 00 a. M. Thru noon today we could see gusts between 30 and 40 miles an hour. By noon, 3550. By 5 00 to midnight, the gusts should be between 45 and 50 miles and 55 miles an hour. A few 70s after that. I think by tomorrow afternoon things will be looking pretty good. Heres the latest forecast track from the national retain center. Once we make landfall, we will curves up to the north, so we will not be totally done with sandy until late tuesday. We might be concealing during rainfall and overcast conditions into wednesday. Lets talk about the flood threat with adam caskey. We have a flood watch in effect for nearly the entire viewing area because and that is all the way through tomorrow, by the way because we will see the rain pick up throughout the day. Theres a light rain across a good part of our viewing area, especially northern virginia, and parts of maryland. The yellow and orange shows the heavy rain moving from the
Eastern Shore
westward on to the western shore. Calvert county and down through st. Marys county has very heavy rainfall. Down in lower st. Marys county and that includes the mouth of the
Potomac River
as well, and thats all moving east to west. Its an onshore flow as we typically see in tropical systems. How much rain can we expect . About 4 inches to 8 inches from this system all the way through tomorrow. Heres one of our inhouse computer models that we consult with in terms of the rainfall totals. This gives us a pretty good idea of what to expect overall from this system. About 5 inches around the beltway. Southern maryland, about 6 inches of rain. That especially in st. Marys county. On the
Eastern Shore
s when we could see 10 inches of rain by the time this wraps up in terms of the rainfall later on tomorrow. A flood watch in effect for the majority of our viewing area through tomorrow evening. Flood warning right now for the
Monocacy River
and frederick county. Later this morning through the afternoon and into the evening that will be the heaviest rainfall and the wind will continue increasing throughout the day and especially speaking later on tonight. We have a bunch of tall old trees in the washington area. A better idea to sleep on the main floor if you can instead of upstairs. Its just one of those days. You need to be careful and take precautions. A number of agencies are doing the same thing. The commute might erupt if you have to get to work without a car today. Several local mass transit systems are closed today. That includes metro rail, metrobus, and metroaccess. We have dan for metro on the phone. What about this decision to shut down the entire system . Good morning. This is a decision we made late yesterday afternoon in consultation with the
National Weather
service and our jurisdictional partners as well as the federal grant. The first reason was the
National Weather
service came back to us with a forecast that had some new information about what to expect in terms of sustained winds that caused us some concern. In addition, the federal government was indicating they were leaning toward the closure of federal offices in d. C. And we were also hearing from pepco dominion about concerns of their ability to maintain power needed to preserve metro rail service. Those three factors led us to this decision like many transit agencies up and down the east coast, to suspend service entirely monday and possibly beyond. Divided each year to shut it down completely rather than to
Start Service
and then decide where to redraw lines to shut off part of the service . It is difficult when you have passengers on the system or folks who may have taken your service to work or wherever they were going and then after communicate a message that the service is in the process of shutting down. We did not want that type of situation. We did not want to put passengers and
Emergency Responders
in a position where they would have to endure a power outage on a train or some situation like that. What is the process of deciding when the system will be back up and running . I would not expect any decision on that prior to this evening at the earliest. That will be made after we have put gone over consultation with the jurisdictions and the national government. We will look at what the forecast is for overnight and tomorrow. We will also need to get an assessment internally on damage from the storm and we will need to know where flooding is, where trees are down, where we have power issues. Once we have all that information together, we may be in a position to tell customers what to expect. By the time you get to around 6 00 or so this evening, we will communicate with customers about tomorrow . In terms of a full restoration of service, we may not have a definitive answer then, but we can tell customers at least what to expect. Do you remember the system shutting down in advance prior . Back in 2003 in advance of isabel. It was not a whole day. The system closed early at 11 00 a. M. Breaking new ground all the time. Thanks very much. We will talk with you again later this morning. It turns out that the new york subway system and the subway system in the philadelphia area are completely shut down as well. Plan on huntingtown. Stay tuned. We are back with an update on the forecast and on the roads. If you have the ability to take pictures of the letter from a safe place, we would love to see them. [ female announcer ] i found the best cafe in the world. Nespresso. Where theres a coffee to match myvery mood. Where just one touch creates the perfect cup. Where every cappuccino and latte is made with fresh milk. And where clothing is optional. Nespresso. What else . Good morning. Im jacqui jeras with latest on
Hurricane Sandy
and its impact to our area. Its a category one storm. Maximum winds increasing overnight. Its 85 miles an hour now. This is a monster storm. We have been stealing its influence for about 1224 hours already. The delmarva peninsula has been getting hit very hard with this. Heavy rain and strong winds already 40 miles to 50 miles an hour. The storm is moving in a northerly direction right now as it approaches. It is expected to take a turn towards the west northwest. That should bring it just to the north of our area, which puts us on the good side of the storm meaning the majority of our own direction will come in from the north or northwest. That keeps the storm surge concerns down a little. Being that the storm is so large, the wind threat remains very widespread and it does not matter whether it gives us north or south. Theres no way to get around the wind. Our wins will be increasing throughout the day and reaching
Dangerous Levels
winds. It could cause widespread
Power Outages
that could last for days. Hopefully, the
Recovery Time
will be a little shorter because of recent
Infrastructure Improvements
record. Rainfall can be expected somewhere in the range of 4 inches to 8 inches. Damaging wind with the wind gusts to night reaching 60 miles or 70 miles an hour. Thats why
Power Outages
are possible. We expect down trees as well. If you want to stay home today. Schools are closed. You need to ask yourself how important is it that i need to run outside to go to this one last thing . I am very concerned about trees coming down, getting cars or getting your home. If you have a basement or interior room on the lower level of your home, thats a good place to hang out today. If youre in a flood prone area maybe the basement is not a good place for you today. Rainfall so far, take a look at the polls in the last 24 hours. A third of an inch up to about a half inches what we generally get. We have seen over an inch and that half. Heres the computer model forecast showing the rainfall expected between now and tuesday evening into wednesday morning. About 4. 5 inches in d. C. And the same la plata. Heavier amounts toward the coast and in delaware and virginia and maryland. In the future, how long this will last, increasing rainfall throughout the afternoon. That one might think the heavy downpours will occur. We could see as much as an inch per hour at times. Its not so odd as a flash flooding event as a river flooding event. The rain will be lasting a long time. Some observers could be flooded throughout the week. We expect the wind died down by later tomorrow morning. Now lets check on traffic with jamie whitten. Thank you so much. I dont expect much traffic on the roads. If you can, stay put. Dangerous conditions out and about. Already seeing ponding. At little falls parkway, that is shut down between massachusetts avenue and river road. Beach drive is closed. The sligo creek parkway is closed near piney branch road and wayne avenue. This is all closed until further notice. As we look at some of our
Traffic Cameras
around the region, rain coming down hard. Essential personnel, if you and think that there might be high standing water, a turnaround. Dont try to go through it. That is so dangerous. I just wanted to show you some of those
Traffic Cameras
with heavy rain coming down throughout the area. Please be safe if you have to head out. Back to you. Thank you. 5 18 right now, 51 degrees. Coming up, we will talk about how its already impact on wall street in new the nyselisted has shut down today and the

Lets start with jacqui jeras. We are talking about the latest conditions. Two of the biggest threats today will be the wind and rain. I will start by talking more about the wind conditions. We see in dedication through the overnight and early morning. 85 miles an hour for the maximum sustained winds. Still a category one hurricane. It could connect with the jet stream and we could see peak gusts along the coast and may be reachi around 90 miles an hour or so. This is a very large storm. The windshield stretches out more than 500 miles from the center of the storm. You can see from the center of the storm that it would stretch all the way towards kentucky, where they are getting a little snowfall in the higher elevations. We will see
Tropical Storm
force winds gusts. The wind will be increasing in intensity throughout the day. We are talking about 2436 hours solid of these extreme winds. That will weaken the trees. Combined with saturated soil, thats a major concern. The wind could reach 60 miles an hour or more by this evening and continuing through the overnight. Current wind gusts of 21 miles an hour in manassas. At reagan national, between 50 miles an hour between 15 miles an hour and 20 miles an hour. The same at dulles airport. That will increase to about 40 miles an hour in the afternoon and it will be at its peak during the overnight. Theres a high wind warning in effect for our entire area through tomorrow morning. The wind that will be steady and consistent, a sustained winds will be 3540 miles an hour. Imagine that and then with even higher gusts. For more on the rainfall, meteorologist adam caskey. Thank you. Heres a timeline of what to expect. You will notice the rain started to get a little heavier at 8 00 a. M. Today. Most sustained downpours will be late this morning through the lunch hour into the afternoon and early evening. The rain will taper off a little tonight and especially by tomorrow. Sustained winds picking up throughout the day, gusting up to 70 miles an hour. Heres a look at live super doppler 7 radar. The yellow indicates the heaviest rain and the orange and red as well, thats not moving east to west. Calvert county, erie county moderate to heavy rain. Over the johnson bridge is a little downpour at this time. Its all moving west to the 95 corridor. Light rain will continue picking up as the heavy rain moves onshore and westward close to the metro area. You can see in the general flow is from the east to west, as we typically see from the tropical systems. We arent going to see the heavy bans pushing from the east to the west. How much rain can we expect . Up to 8 inches. Around the beltway about 5 inches of rain. In denair is county, 6 inches to 7 inches of rain. This is just one computer model, but it does indicate high amounts of rainfall stimulation especially on the
