before crashing right in front of them. >> he's down midfield, fire trucks are on him. >> what do you mean, he crashed? >> affirmative. oh, god! and hero dog. the german shepherd who leapt between a little girl and a rattlesnake. >> a rescue dog, for us, paid it forward by protecting my family. >> the snake sinking its teeth into the brave dog. how people across america are touched by this story and helping out. all right. good morning. also coming up on the show, a worrying headline from the world of sports. a fan hit by a piece of broken bat while sitting in the stands at boston's legendary fenway park. >> this fan was sitting behind protective netting but the shard of wood flew right over it. this is not the first time. which begs the question -- is major league baseball doing enough to protect the fans? we're going to start with another popular past time gone badly awry. outing millions of americans have enjoyed. this time, it turned fatal. scores of people were on the way to a casino when their bus crashed. on a texas highway. eight are dead. 40 injured. >> and so many people now asking, how did this happen? abc's lauren lyster is in laredo, texas, with more. lauren, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan and paula. the majority of the more than 40 hurt passengers have been treated at this hospital. they thought they would end up at a casino yesterday. that's where they were headed on a tour bus on what was a rainy morning. then tragedy struck. taking them on this devastating detour. this morning, eight passengers killed on this charter bus. more than 40 hospitalized. busted windows. dangling auto parts. a collapsed ceiling. smashed seats are what's left of it after losing control on a texas highway, rolling over. >> the way i saw the bus, i had to know there were fatalitiefat. >> reporr: 11:30 in the morning on saturday in a rural area of southern texas, 46 miles from laredo when the driver no longer had command and the vehicle flipped. >> everything is very preliminary for us. as far as the contributing factors. he lost control of the bus. and rolled over. >> reporter: seven people died at the scene. one dying later at the hospital. 44 people were hurt. so many, they had to be taken to three different nearby hospitals. >> objects become projectiles. people become projectiles. so they're hitting hard metal at high speeds. >> reporter: every week end, buses like this one pack full and head to casinos around the current. this isn't the only accident. last year, nine passengers were hurt when this tour bus in new york smashed into a building. and in february, this bus heading to a connecticut casino flipped in the snow on its way from new york, injuring dozens. and the federal government is now involved in this texas crash. a team from the ntsb is expected to arrive here today to investigate the wreck and look at if the weather played a role. paula? >> that' lauren. how did this happen? thank you. we want to move to politics now. it's been a tough couple of days for donald trump, from refusing to release his tax returns to the so-called trump tapes. and now, hillary clinton is trying to take advantage in a new ad. mary bruce is here with the story. mary, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. trump is making an extremely rare move here. breaking precedent by refusing to release his tax returns. and now this morning, clinton is seizing on it. and turning up the heat. >> thank you. >> reporter: this morning, hillary clinton is slamming donald trump for refusing to release his tax returns, asking in this new video, what is he hiding? >> if i decide to run for office, i'll produce my tax returns. absolutely. i can't do it until the audit is finished. >> reporter: but trump items george, voters don't have a right to see a candidate's tax returns. >> yes, or no, do you believe voters have a right to see your tax returns before they make a final decision? >> i don't think they do. but i do say this. i will really gladly give them. they're not going to learn anything. but it's under routine audit. >> reporter: until then, he says he won't reveal how much he pays in taxes. >> what is your tax rate? >> it's none of your business. you'll see it when i release. i fight very hard to pay as little tax as possible. >> the commercial is effective. he uses donald trump's own words. to sort of expose what could be hypocrisy. >> reporter: this, as trump is haunted by a voice from his past. >> what's your name again? >> john miller. >> reporter: the person on the other end of the call tells us she knew before she hung up this was trump. no doubt, the real donald trump. >> no doubt. he apologized two weeks later and said i'm sorry in print. >> reporter: sue carswell was a reporter for "people" magazine in 1991 when she conducted this interview with someone who claimed to be trump's spokesman. >> she's somebody that has a lot of options. he gets called by everybody in the book, in terms of women. >> reporter: carswell says weeks later, trump c admitted it was him all along. now, trump denies it. >> a part of me was like, is it donald? i think it is. it tells you about his character. he's punking me. he's punking the country. >> reporter: you think it shows he's a liar? >> yes. it shows he's a liar. >> reporter: she says she did not leak this recording to the press. she suggests trump may have released it himself to divert attention from the other issues dogging his campaign, like those tax returns. dan and paula? >> interesting theory. mary, thank you. >> let's bring in jon karl, in washington, getting ready to host "this week." hey,. so, hillary clinton, as we saw in mary's piece, is hitting donald trump on his refusal to release his taxes? is this a potent line of attack? isn't it a bit dangerous given that some have called on her to release her speeches to wall street? >> i think, dan, the answer to both of your questions is yes. it is trump will be dogged from now to the election from people saying, what do you to hide? hillary clinton making the case in the debates, you can imagine. the minute she does, what do you have to hide? the question goes right back to her. not just the transcripts of her speeches to goldman-sachs. and to others. it's also the e-mails that were deleted. it's everything else. the clintons have had issues with the issue of transparency. trump has, too. welcome to the fall campaign. the front page of "the new york times" has an article called crossing the line, trump's private conduct with women. polls say he's unpopular with women. does he need to fix it? could this article further the damage? >> well, look, he does have a huge problem with women. hillary clinton begins this race with a double-digit huge gender gap lead. among women. a lot of people will look at the story and say, they have heard many of these times" placed that front and center and say, there they go again. those predisposed to trump, they've heard this before. they've heard worse. i'm not sure it changes the dynamic much. he does need to find a way to change the gender gap. >> on a lighter note, "saturday night live" weighing in on reports that trump was his own publicist in the 1990s. take a look. >> mr. trump is the real-life inspiration for "ironman." who am i? i'm his publicist, joey pepperoni. no, i'm not donald trump in disguise. this is just what classy people sound like, okay? >> joey pepperoni's lines are ringing off the hook this morning. trump denies he ever pretended to be joey pepperoni or anybody else. do you think people buy that? does it matter? since all the trump controversies tend to blur together. >> he's the ultimate teflon candidate, dan. i don't know. you know, this is something else. he hasn't always denied it by the way. way back in the 1990s where he acknowledged using the name john baron on occasion. this is one of the stranger stories. i don't know where this one goes. the problem for trump is this could lead to ridicule. one thing he hates is to be ridiculed. >> jon will be part of a big show this morning. he'll interview the head of the republican party. and martha raddatz will be live from iraq. that's coming up later on "this week" right here on abc. >> thanks, dan. a frightening moment at boston's fenway park. a man in the stands struck by a broken bat. adrienne bankert joins us with the story. the fan, he was sitting behind new protective netting put in place after a couple of incidents last year. so how did this happen? >> reporter: you know, paula, the large end of that bat wednesday over the net, which was a contingency for fans in the stands. the question, is major league doing enough to prevent injuries? overnight, a fan bloodied at a boston red sox game after a bat comes flying into the stands. >> it hit him right in the head. straight on in the head. >> reporter: the still unidentified fan hit above the right eye but what was left after houston astros george springer's at-bat. those at the park acting quickly on the assist. >> they waved down medical personnel. to come and look at the guy. they came down, had a big towel on his head. kind of pressed against it. he was walking, there was two people were helping him up through the stands. >> reporter: according to the red sox, the man's injuries were not serious. saturday's close call eerily reminiscent of the terrifying night last year. in the very same stadium. >> this is a broken bat grounder. >> reporter: last june at fenway park, tanya carpenter suffering life-threatening injuries. after brett lawrie's bat splintered. >> watch the bump, watch the bump here. >> reporter: portions of the wood becoming partially embedded in her shoulder and hitting her in the face. the 45-year-old spent a week in the hospital and continued outpatient treatment. carpenter, along with a string implement new safety guidelines. recommending the protective netting between the field and the seats be extended 70 feet from the backstop to both dugouts. this morning, the man struck by the bat is recovering. he was treated at the stadium, transported to a local hospital, and released. and a spokesperson for tanya carpenter says she was saddened to hear another patron was hit by a bat at fenway, throw grateful that the netting is extended to the dugouts. there are serious questions regarding the decision by the mlb and red sox to limit the protection to those within 70 feet of home play. the players in the dugouts are protected, the but the fans above the dugout are not. >> you're sitting behind the netting. you have a false sense of security. >> always watching. i think a lot of people looking at their cell phones has become a habit for all of us. so even at the ball game, k we want to talk about a mystery at sea. a woman vanishing from a cruise ship in the gulf of mexico. she fell overbard in the middle of the night. the coast guard called in to lead the search. investigators try to find out what happened here. marci gonzalez is here with the story. good morning, marci. >> reporter: good morning, dan. the coast guard is back out searching this morning as cruise officials go over surveillance video and interview passengers, still trying to find some answers. this morning, carnival cruise officials trying to find out how this mother of four went overboard. plunging into the gulf of mexico. samantha broberg's mysterious fall apparently going unnoticed for hours. >> it's hard to continue on having a fun vacation knowing somebody fell overboard. >> reporter: the carnival "liberty" was heading from galveston to cozumel. when the cost guard says brobrerg fell from the lido deck, ten stories up. officials believe it happened at 2:00 friday morning. the cruise line tells abc news her traveling companions did not report her as missing until much later in the day. when they did, passengers say the ship was put on lockdown. >> the cabin steward said he was here to check the cabin. they looked inside the closets, in the shower. underneath the bed, and on the balcony. >> reporter: the staff also checked the ship's surveillance videos, finding broberg's fall was captured on camera. >> we have now concluded the review of all of our cameras. unfortunately, it appears she may have fallen into the water early in the morning. >> reporter: the cruise line note fieing the coast guard at 5:00 friday evening. 15 hours after broberg went overboard. >> they did not know a passenger went overboard until they had to search the cameras some 15 hours later. >> reporter: the cruise line explaining they were following standard protocol. and industry experts noting overboard incidents are extremely rare. broberg's family saying they are shocked and deeply saddened. guard is able to bring samantha home. the coast guard admits it will be tough to find her, especially after so much time. but, because the water is so warm, they believe she could still be alive. so they say for now, they'll keep searching. dan and paula? >> affirmative. something happened right there at the top of the loop as the nose of the plane comes back through. >> it appears something on the airplane snaps. the airplane goes out of control and seems to tumble. as it tumbles, there's just no chance for him to recover the airplane. >> reporter: fire trucks rushing on to the field. the plane already completely engulfed in flames. >> anytime something like this happens, it is so tragic. our hearts and prayers go out to the family of this pilot. >> the announcer came on and said there was a crash. he told people to turn their kids away from the crash. >> reporter: the airfield promptly shut down. spectators asked to leave. friends posting on facebook. please keep greg's family and friends in your prayers. there are no words to describe what we're all feeling right now. god bless, and godspeed, greg. he started flying in 1989. he performs tricks at air shows across the country. >> what you see at an air show is quite dangerous. the pilots doing them are supposed to be professional, have the best equipment, best leasing a statement. family we're greatly humbled by the outpouring of love and prayers. he will be greatly missed. >> a reminder that these shows are, in fact, dangerous. eva, thank you. let's take another look at the national forecast. back to indra petersons in for rob this weekend. >> it is may, right?
