Breaking news overnight, the white house in contact with the fbi over those stories about russia during the campaign and theres President Trump getting ready to speak to the Largest Group of conservatives in america this morning in d. C. A lot to get to. First that breaking news from overseas. Authorities revealing a banned chemical agent vx was used to kill the north korean leaders half brother at the malaysian airport and terry moran has more. These new details are disturbing to say the least. Reporter terrifying, amy. This is a truly shocking development. Vx is considered the weapon of mass destruction. Its lethal in tiny amounts and here its been used to kill a busy international airport. This morning, Malaysian Police are saying two women accused of murdering kim jongnam at the kuala lumpur airport used a chemical weapon called vx, a banned nerve agent. Vchl vx is deadly even in small amounts. Surveillance cameras caught the moment one of the suspects wiped the liquid toxin on his face. He is seen stumbling towards officials for help before collapsing. Malaysian Officials Say the suspects washed their hands right away but one later became sick and vomited. They are scrambling to make sure no other area is affected. It can take days or weeks for the agent to evaporate. Symptoms can last for hours. It causes first confusion, drowsiness and nausea before banned under the Chemicals Weapons Convention but north korea is not part of that. Vx is not something you make in your kitchen. The fact that it was used to kill kim jonguns half brother points to evidence that north korea is the culprit but they have a massive arsenal of them. 5,000 tons of mustard gas and sarin and vx and now have demonstrated theyre willing to use them. We move on to the new report that the white house asked the fbi to dispute recent stories about contacts between the Trump Campaign and russian intelligence during the president ial election. Our senior justice correspondent Pierre Thomas with details. Reporter today a white house official tells abc news that priebus was in contact with the fbi and did ask the fbi to set the record straight and dispute the accuracy of stories suggesting there was repeated contact between Trump Associates and late last night White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told cnn we didnt try to knock the story down. We asked them to tell the truth. The fbis declining to comment this morning but a source did not dispute the conversation between priebus and fbi executive did take place. Priebus went on a talk show and blasted the story about them contacting russian officials as inaccurate and grossly overstated. He suggested that his assessment was based on discussions he had with intelligence officials and including the fbi, george. He said he talked to the fbi. This is sensitive, pierre, because white house political officials are not supposed to have contact with the fbi over ongoing investigations. Reporter super sensitive because the fbi is supposed to be free to conduct criminal investigations pretty much independently and Bureau Policy is generally not to comment on ongoing investigations. Democrats are criticizing the white house contact with the fbi calling it pressure. That is something the white house tay george. Democrats are also saying theyre surprised by the white houses categorical denials. Thanks very much. Conservatives once viewed donald trump with great skepticism and some still do but today he goes before that conservative Political Action conference as the clear leader of the Republican Party and the conservative movement. Vice president pence got a warm welcome at this years most influential gathering of conservative activists. You know, this is the ninth time ive had the privilege to address cpac. Thanks to all of you and the confidence of our new president , this is the first time im here states. Reporter decades cpac has been a showcase for president ial wannabes and republican big wigs but this year its the donald trump show. This will be tpac this year. Reporter conservatives go the a glimpse of steve bannon who pledged the president would wager an allout war with the media and political opponent. If you think theyre going to give you your country back without a fight, you are sadly mistaken. Every day, every day it is going to be a fight and that is what im proudest about donald trump. Every day in the oval office he tells reince and i committed this to the American People and promised this when i ran and im going to deliver on it. I think hes the president and i will say the first month the cabinet President Trump nominated is a terrific cabinet. Reporter does that mean you think he is a true conservative . Reporter you heard Kellyanne Conway there say that cpac which of course stands for conservative Political Action conference will become known as tpac for trump. That is not sitting well with some conservative activists. Talk radio show host mark levin said, quote, it is conservative Political Action conference, thats what it is, thats what it will be ten years from now and levin pointed out when reagan was president it was celebrated at that conference, it wasnt known as rpac. You cpac last year. What do you expect his message will be to ted cruz as well perhaps who worry hes not conservative enough. Reporter i think his first message will be he won, that is trumps answer to a lot of the criticism. He won. He won big in those republican primaries among conservative voters and then hell point to what he is doing, by all accounts a conservative agenda so or at least as defined by donald trump. Thank you. Overall his Approval Ratings pretty dismal but he does have a stronghold on conservatives and republicans right now. Well, as you know, george, he is in an historic low. About a majority of the country that disapproves of him but does have a very, very solid base of support that doesnt seem to have moved. But i also Vice President mike pence said to this conservative audience that the cabinet that President Trump has chosen is the most conservative cabinet hes seen. This morning 51yearold Adam Purinton is accused of murdering a man in cold blood and injuring two others. It took place inside a busy kansas sports bar wednesday at around 7 15 p. M. Ive got two down with gunshot wounds to the chest. A third with a wound to the hip. Reporter the suspect traveling 80 miles to an applebees in clinton, missouri. Now were being advise the suspects name is adam, and he is a white male wearing a white shirt with military medals. Reporter police say a bartender at the restaurant called them after purinton allegedly told him needed a place to hide out. The fbi now investigating whether this is a hate crime. And but now well move on to that major arrest in one of americas biggest murder mystery, the man is now facing charges for the death of a former Georgia Beauty queen who went missing more than a decade ago and Abcs Steve Osunsami is in atlanta with the latest in this case. Good morning, steve. Reporter good morning to you, michael. To crack this case after nearly 12 years because someone came forward with valuable information. It was an unsolved mystery in the south that made headlines across the country. Tara grinstead disappeared. Reporter the disappearance of 30yearold Tara Grinstead. What happened to tara . Reporter she was a High School Teacher and experienced beauty pageant contestant seen here winning one of her tiaras on investigation discovery. In 2005 she went missing after watching a pageant and having dinner with friends. More than a decade went by with no and the for her family. I need an appointed attorney. Reporter this morning this man seen here in his First Court Appearance is now charged with murdering her. Authorities say that Ryan Alexander duke broke into her home in october of 2005, robbed and killed the teacher with his bare happens and then hid the body. He has not yet entered a plea. The county of foresaid commit aggravated aseattle. Reporter duke was a student at her school and heres his senior photo from the yearbook and graduated three years before grinstead was killed. Police say the mystery ended earlier this week. A few days ago an individual came forward and reported that they had information into taras disappearance. Reporter an mraents filmmaker who produces a podcast is credited with keeping interest in the story alive. This is up and vanished. The investigation of Tara Grinstead. Im your host payne lindsey. Nancy, i know you have followed it for years and know the details intimately. What was it about this case that captured americas attention. I think that there were so many factors tha grabbed americas attention. For one thing, i recall distinctly at the time tara went missing going to ocilla and meeting with her family and going through her home, step by step, i looked around and it looked like a little jewel box. She had it perfectly appointed. It looked like it was out of a magazine. You know where you shot for Home Furnishings and everything was perfectly in place and it struck me then that her alarm clock had been pushed away it was broken on the floor. There were some beads on the floor, a lamp shade was askew. There was a mark on her bedpost. Her car had clay on it. It was unlocked and the seat was pushed back and i knew then, tara was gone. Wow and, payne, youre a documentary filmmaker and interested in true crime. You got some early tips from the familys private investigator and dont think this case is over yet. I dont. I want to credit dr. Maurice goblin a part of this case with me since the very beginning since i started the podcast but, yeah, i think that this is of one piece to a bigger puzzle that we should find out soon about in the coming days and near future. You believe there might be more arrests. What role do you believe your podcast made . A lot believe it solved this murder mystery. I think that the podcast opened up this atmosphere in factor and line of communication and an open channel and i think that has been so long these secrets have been kept and its just been such a tightlipped uncomfortable thing to talk about and the podcast maybe helped create an environment for the truth to come out. Nancy, we just heard about this community and the impact this has had. What do you think it means for the community to finally be solved . You know, before this, ocilla and still is a beautiful area, very bucolic, gorgeous woods and meadows, this hung over the Community Like a dark cloud and now its blown away and i dont think the case is over. When the spokesperson for the gbi was asked yesterday will there be more arrests, he basically said, wait and see. Somebody knew about this. They walked straight into Police Headquarters and said, i got a tip for you on Tara Grinstead and then, bam, everything happened very quickly. So its not over yet. Yeah, and, payne, tell me why it was so important to you personally to help solve the case . You know, my grandma is from tip ton and i have family in south georgia and after digging into the case i just became immediately attached to it. I saw how heartbroken this community was and how deeply affected they were, so im just so glad theres an answer now and finally some sort of resolution in play so i think in the beginning just seeing the affected sad has been unreal. Lets talk to Cokie Roberts about this right now and, cokie, im tempted to say who needs a formal role when you have this much power . Exactly right. Even the first lady isnt exactly a formal role. We have deemed it such but ivanka trumps role in the west wing, not the east wing where the first lady presides and its one on issues that she has said she cares about and i have to tell you, george, im delighted shes there talking about child care and Maternity Leave and often when you look at those pictures, shes t nonwhite male in the room. So good for her. Im glad shes there. Were seeing the influence in a lot of different ways affe affecting the president s schedule. Who he meets with often determines policy and intervened we are told on a couple of different issues clearly most recently perhaps to influence the president s position on Climate Change so she can work her she can work her influence in many different ways because she is so close to the president. Thats exactly right and thats what weve seen with families, mainly with first ladies who and you know it upsets when i say this but the first lady is the most powerful woman in the country because she has the ear, first thing in the morning and last thing at night of the most powerful man in the country and ivanka trump is coming very, very close to that with her tremendous influence and nearness to her father. One of the things Hillary Clinton learned the more formal that role gets the more greater possibly pitfalls will come up. You are the only person allowed to make your golden oscar statues. Theyre so stingy they dont want [ laughter ] as soon as the oscars are over, they take them away. Only give them to you.
