>> reporter: gusts reaching 80 miles per hour. hail pelting cars. and in the nation's capital, flash flooding sending water cascading down an escalator at this d.c. metro station. people trekked through the flooded underground carefully making their way up the steps. in maryland, a an almost 13-mile path. >> it was horrible. everything turned black and we just seen the trees going left and right. >> reporter: storm s uprooting trees, tossing them onto cars and into homes leaving them without power. the threat is on along that warm front and that area in red is the moderate risk that something we don't see that often throughout the year so certainly heavier north and west of chicago for tornadoes and then into ft. wayne all the way just north and west of cincinnati you can see damaging winds of 60 plus miles per hour and i want to time it out. you saw the storms happening now. take it to noon, chicago with another hit, right there north of indianapolis and finally just after drive time in chicago or around that time the low passes by and that's when you have the potential for that spin and, therefore, tornadoes so a lot of threats for today including that hail, the damaging wind all for that part right around the great lakes. we'll keep up with it. >> thanks, ginger. in the meantime, we turn to the wildfires raining across seven states this morning. the ere flames, residents now being forced to leave their homes as firefighters fight to protect people and their property, as those fires spread. abc's matt gutman has been on the front lines all week long and in duarte, california, this morning. hey, matt. >> reporter: that's right. and this fire continues to spread. in the past hour we've been here we've seen it make a run in that valley. now these fire service fire trucks have been here to block it in case it leaps into the neighborhoods around us. normally at night the fire subsides but because it's been so hot here in the brush, so dry, this just continues to burn. this morning, hundreds of firefighters and squadrons of choppers continue to battle infernos out west. the dangerous heat still fueling more than a dozen wildfires burning in seven states. >> we're a little short on resources because of the fire up north and the fire down south but we are getting resources in as we speak. >> reporter: as air assets treetops just over the leaping flames nearly 600 firefighters grind it out on the ground against twin fires burning just outside of los angeles. the blaze is threatening to merge into one. we watched as this crew labored for an hour trying to cut its way just a few jars up a hill. >> firefighters are telling me they're battling this incredibly steep terrain. they're also fighting the heat and some of this brush here hasn't burned in decades. more than that, they've got to cut through all of this cactus. the blaze chewing up more than 5,000 acres. >> mandatory evacuations. >> reporter: forcing officials to order mandatory evacuations to almost 800 residents. >> last night was really scary. feels like it's just coming straight out at us. >> reporter: this woman's house burned down in 1980 and is now packing into her minivan that which was most precious to her. her three kids. now, no word on when those evacuees might be into their homes, partly because this fire is only 10% contained but perhaps a small glimmer of good news on the horizon, the forecast is supposed to be only in the 90s over the next couple of day, not in the 100s, amy. >> all right, matt gutman, thank you for that reporting. we appreciate it. turning now to politics and hillary clinton's blistering attack on donald trump. who then blasted the presumptive democratic nominee right back. abc's cecilia vega is in cincinnati, speech. he will go after hillary on everything, benghazi, the e-mails, the donations to the clinton foundation, i don't expect that he will go at the bill clinton personal stuff but will certainly go after bill clinton's record on trade, trade is essential to his campaign and sensitive to a lot of democrats. he will hit that hard. >> i asked if he will self-fund in the general election. he said he might. he raised, what, 3 million in may compared to romney raising 23 million, john mccain raising 20 million. he's up against hillary who's raised even more. are there changes coming. >> they insist this will be a they will have to raise a heck of a lot more money. look at the numbers here, dave. this is astounding. hillary clinton has 684 staffers. he has 70. if you look at the money, you mentioned hillary clinton's raised 25 million in may. he, 3 million. he only has a million in the bank. here's the one i love. look at this. ad spending so far in the general election. 138 million for clinton in the super pacs, $363,000 for donald trump and that's just his super pac. he hasn't spent a dime on advertising. now he won the primary on the cheap. it's a lot harder to win a general election that way. >> in the meantime, clinton is trying to combine that spending on battleground ads with the speeches, are they landing, though? >> well, this speech that she gave yesterday about his business record is a much harder case to make. he's a guy that runs around flying around with an airplane with his name on it. hard to say he was an unsuccessful businessman but that is the case on a bus to new york city en route to join isis. he claims musleh is a di signof long dead anwar al awlaki and had been recently shopping for a pressure cooker like that used in the boston marathon bombings. prosecutors say he tried to recruit for isis and was conducting online searches for terror targets here at home, amy. >> and, pierre, it's hard to ignore that profile of musleh strikingly that busy holland tunnel. it's the bizarre arrest at one of new york city's busiest tunnels with terrorism units on high alert the discovery of a distinctive truck filled with an arsenal of deadly weapon, seven gun, body armor, 2,000 rounds of ammunition. a military grade helmet. an officer initially stopping it because of a broken windshield. >> he had the driver exit the vehicle and when the driver got out, he noticed a 45 caliber handgun on the driver's seat. >> reporter: but this morning police say the three people from pennsylvania told the officers they didn't intend to har anyone. instead, they wanted to rescue someone. a 16-year-old girl who they say was in a new york drug den. the truck's owner john cramsey would calls himself a rebel on facebook and owns a gun range posting these photos before the arrest with this message. this young lady from wilkes-barre is scared and wants to come home. last night she woke to find her friend's body next to her in the same bed where her friend died of another heroin overdose. the mother of one of those arrested speaking with abc news overnight. >> they weren't going out to harm anybody. they were going out to save. >> reporter: cramsey's own daughter dying of an accidental drug overdose just four months ago. he posted this video of her on his facebook while grieving. >> it'll all get better. >> i think when he lost his daughter, it just kind of broke something inside of him and it sent him on a mission to help other families. >> reporter: this morning police say they have found the 16-year-old girl cramsey was looking for but she told them she does not need to be rescued. and we should tell you those guns were legally bought in pennsylvania but here in new jersey it is illegal to possess them so they've been charged for that and they'll face a judge later today. david. >> so much hardship in those families. horrible story all the way around. we get to lara. big very muches on a story we've been following all week. >> indeed. it is that daring rescue going on right now in the south pole. a small plane on the way to save a sick researcher braving dangerous conditions in one of the most remote for the trip back out to the british research station that they took off from. they needed to rest for about ten hours, refuel the plane with specially warmed fuel and most critically wait for good weather. overnight, the small rescue plane the bottom of the world. a window of good weather allowing the turboprop twin otter to reach the american amundsen-scott research center where a crew member needs to be evacuated. a second person will likely come out too. the station so remote the flight so daring that just two evacuations like this have been attempted in 60 years. >> sort of the end of "20/20" anchor elizabeth vargas is here. >> angelika graswald is accused of killing vince viafore. there is no forensic evidence and no eyewitnesses. it rests almost entirely on graswald's words during an 11-hour taped interrogation and a conversation with the detective that was not recorded and happened before she was read her rights. a state police investigator is now testifying that angelika graswald admitted to him that she took her fiance's paddle after he capsized and held it whe the decorative also testified that during their 45-minute conversation, graswald said she felt trapped by viafore and wanted to be free of his demands of sex with him and another woman. but in graswald's 11-hour taped interrogation obtained by abc news she repeatedly denies killing her fiance and says her desperate calls to 911 were real. >> i don't see him. oh, my god. >> can you see the kayak still? >> no, the kayak went underwater. oh, my god. >> reporter: but after hours and hours of questions punctuated with yoga breaks and hopscotch, graswald does finally utter these damning words. >> i wanted him dead and now he's gone. and i'm okay with it. >> i'm okay with that. >> reporter: graswald spoke to me exclusively from jail. why would you say something like that? >> well, they kept asking me the same questions like a hundred times. i knew tha i was at my breaking point, i had it so i just gave them what they wanted. >> reporter: at the center of the case the kayak's drain plug. prosecutors claim graswald removed it causing the kayak to take on water and sink. >> why didn't he have that plug in there. >> he didn't have it because i guess i had it. >> reporter: this is the infamous plug. >> it is. >> that prosecutors say angelika removed in a plot to kill vince but this plug is, what, half an inch in diameter. >> just look at how large the cockpit is where the seat is. there's a lot of water that can enter that. that's a big hole. this is a really small hole. >> it's a tiny hole. our experiment shows that this kayaker had no trouble crossing the hudson in an identical kayak with the plug removed. did you remove the plug from vince's kayak with an intent to kill him? >> no. i did not. >> reporter: is under a gag order. >> she did not confess to killing vince viafore and there are many reasons why he died. my compliant removing that drain plug was not one of them. >> reporter: graswald who pleaded not guilty still maintains she did not kill viafore. did you kill vince? >> no. >> that day? >> no. i loved him. i didn't do it. >> reporter: those questions will be critical, those interrogation tapes and the judge will decide after five days of hearings whether to admit them. >> let's bring in dan abrams as well and talk about the pretrial hearing that is specifically about angelika's tapes to police, statements that are crucial. >> i think even the prosecutors would concede if they can't get in these statements they have no case. this is the case. these statements and there are two sets of statements. remember, there's first a statement that she makes before that interrogation you see on tape and that's the one where the authorities say she made even more incriminating statements and so you have a police officer basical she basically told me she did it. she told me why she did it, et cetera, but then when you get her on the interrogation tape she's not saying the sorts of things that the police officer saying she said the first time. >> and the detective keeps saying remember you told me, remember you told me and she's like, no. and also that statement that conversation that 45-minute conversation that was not recorded was also done before she was read her rights. >> i was going to ask is that the defense's argument to keep these out. >> that's the entire argument. effectively what the defense is aing is they knew she was already a suspect. they were there to effectively meet her so they could interrogate her and as a result, the defense says, she should have been read her miranda warning before she made this statement. the police are saying, no. we were there, she was not necessarily a suspect. it was only after she made those statements to us did she become a suspect and then they did read her her miranda rights before the taped interrogation. >> although 's called in this hearing that just concluded testified that she went over three times on bannerman's island to intervene because she thought the detectives were bullying angelika so three types she went over to say, are you okay? >> i feel good. i think the way that you were recover is important. the way you take care of yourself and drinking more water and everyone thinks because i have a brand called skinny girl that, you know, i'm all focused on health all the time and i'm not, i'm suppretressed. i'm a mom but since the surgery i was drinking green juices and eating more vegetarian foods and trying to eat healing foods and i did go to school for food and healing so i tried to exercise that and i think that's why the recovery has been more quick than my doctors said. >> is that it? is it done now. >> i think it's done. i know there's a lot of women watching. i have to start menstruating again and see how that works. it was a myoectomy where they took the fibroids out and found gigantic fibroids in there. i made them take a picture and i lost a little bit of weight which people commented on. >> of course. >> so, you know, but, yeah, i definitely feel good. i feel better an had a lot of anxiety as a mother going under and having to have a living will. it was very stressful. >> and having to do it in front of cameras can't be easy. >> and feeling like i was pulling down the show and changing dynamics. i feel better, i'm happy and glad it's over. >> how is the rest of your life. >> i feel happier than i felt in such a long time. i had such a difficult road. so blessed with my daughter and career but i've had a difficult couple of years and my personal life -- >> come out on the other side, my friend. >> i feel like i'm coming out on the other side. >> we're running out of time. what can we expect from the season?
