65,000 students enrolled at osu. what lead up to the shooting is unclear. here's what we do know. there is a report of an active shooter on campus, and first responders rushed to the school. according to columbus firefighters, at least nine people were hurt. one of them is in critical condition. another's condition is unknown, but everyone else is expected to be ok. we know one suspect is dead, according to police. we do not know how many suspects were involved. did the shooter act alone? that is a question we are working to answer for you now. in the meantime, we will keep you posted for new details as they come into our newsroom. jummy: joining us on the line right now is patrick cleary, a student who was on campus when the shootings to lace. thank you for calling in. where you were. patrick: i think it was about 9:30 and i was eating breakfast in our dining hall on north campus called tradition at scott house. i was about to walk to class and as i was going out the door, a guy stopped me and said you cannot leave right now. i said why not, and he said we are on lockdown and there is an active shooter. my heart sort of jumped in my throat. it was sort of surreal. it was hard to process. dining hall away from the windows, and for a while there, that was the own summation we had. it turns out that the shooter was just about a quarter of a mile down the street from us, so then it became even more terrifying. but then we saw the police come in and surround the building. i think that gave those of us who were stuck in the hall some -- how quickly did you hear from campus officials in terms of emails or text alerts to let you know what was going on and to shelter in place? patrick: when i was about to leave, the guy told me that i was allowed to. i looked at my phone and saw that i had these alerts and had forgotten to look at them. th they evidently did a pretty goo alerts on as quick as possible, and, thank god. jummy: what was going through your mind at the time. we have seen so many of the shootings on college campuses. what were you thinking when you were going through this yourself? patrick: i was thinking about all of the people in my life that i had to call, that i had to reach out to and let them know that i was not one of those people that they would be that is a scary moment to consider that. i also thought about this. this is what i would want to say now, that please, when you are doing your job here and covering this, i beg of you, please do not focus on the life of whatever twisted person committed this crime. instead, please, think about -- tell the country about the victims. tell the country about my poor classmates whose lives were changed forever by this criminal. i think inadvertently or not, the more people talk about horrible criminals like these, the more they are romanticized. and i really hope that in this case we can do whatever we can to stop something like this from happening again. jummy: before we let you go, have you been able to leave where you were? i know classes are canceled for the day, but how is everyone coping with what happened just a few hours ago? patrick: we were allowed to leave before other people because we were so close. immediately there is palpable relief, people letting outsize -- letting out sighs. as i was walking back, people are very of looking over their shoulders and walking in the middle of the street. there are police everywhere and helicopters flying overhead so loud you can barely hear yourself think. everything about this campus is going to be different after this. that is what people are coping with, that our school has changed permanently now. so remains to be seen. but that is the feeling in the air right now. jummy: patrick, thank you. i want to let you know that we just got an update. apparently all those who are injured, the injuries are not life-threatening. we just wanted to let you know, absolutely. thanks for taking us -- thanks for taking the time to join us in washington, d.c. patrick cleary joining us from the phone. bring you updates throughout this newscast and the rest of the day. sign up for breaking news text alerts. really important on days like today. go to wjla.com/text. switching to other news -- today election officials in wisconsin are preparing for a recount, millions of votes. this move by the green party has angered president-elect donald trump, who is calling it all a the state of wisconsin is in the pluses of recounting 3 million votes in the presidential race. >> the presidential candidate has the right to request a recount. mr. trump: we are in a rigged, system, folks. kenneth: donald trump blasted the move, which could a trump tweeted that the people have spoken and the election is over. claiming voter fraud in new hampshire and california -- why isn't the media reporting on this?
