they evacuated the station out of an abundance of caution. i'm told that some type of trash and debris maybe newspaper got underneath the third rail. that is what sparked the fire. it was described to me as very minor. why did metro shut the station down for the rest of the day? after the ntsb report and grilling from the public, they want to make sure they are taking every necessary precaution as possible. this is the metro police department. they have the escalateer going down to the station blocked off. we spoke to a number of commuters that are, to say the least, frustrated. take a listen. >> this is an annoyance. yeah. there was a problem here this morning. i thought i wasn't going to get here this morning. i got in this morning but i can't comb go home this way. one of those things. >> you can't be surprise. it's always a problem dealing with the metro. the problems are constantly rising as well. you just driver every day? but even that is inconvenience as well. >> how are you getting home tonight? >> i guess i will walk 12 blocks like the guy said. kevin: so at last track it's only operating between boston and wheelly resten east. blue and the orange, silver as well shut down between eastern market and l'enfant plaza. this station is shut down for the rest of the night. uber and lyft taking advantage of the shutdown. you have a lot of commuters looking for a way home. beltsville outside the high point high school there. where the shooting today. brad, what is the latest? brad: there is an active scene. caravan of the crime scene investigators escorted in by the alwaysers under the lights and sirens. you can see the school now. the fire in e.m.s. personnel starting to pull away. this is now fully a crime scene. what we can tell you is this. this was two hours after school let out. many students still here for team activities. people heard gunfire. what we can tell you now is that one person, an adult female is deceased. second person is injured. police are, in fact, still looking for a suspect. still looking for a suspect. we have been told preliminarily they believe that was a case of domestic violence. this had nothing to do with students. this was a targeted domestic violence here at the school. we believe it took place outside the school. we mentioned that there were many students here for the after-school activities. there are parents here. a while ago we talked to one of them. nervous. she heard from the daughter locked in a closet sheltering in place. >> this is an annoyance. yeah. there was a problem here this morning. i thought i wasn't going to get here this morning and i got in this morning but i can't go home this way. >> she said they were in the closet. they were locked inside. they couldn't get out. they are waiting for the county to let them know when it is safe. brad: well, that woman telling me that her daughter heard the gunshots, that they were loud. her daughter was getting ready to play a tennis match when they heard the gunshots. the coach quick hustled everybody into a closet, protected them. that is where we stand again, this situation domestic. it appears to be over. no students affected. other than by having to shelter in place. no students injured. police still looking for a suspect. we have multiple crews on place and we will follow the story and bring you the latest details as we get them. tension for metro riders tonight trying to deal with the system after the problem with the federal center shut down tonight. the incident on metro comes one day before metro is set to announce what is expected to be some major disruption to service because they want to conduct maintenance and the repairs on the infrastructure. richard reeve is joining us live from the l'enfant plaza with more on what is talked about as the plan goes forward. what have you learned about the plan? richard: get to that in a moment. kevin lewis reported about the situation at federal center having a ripple effect at l'enfant plaza. they have shuttle buses right now but there is frustration to go all around. this is just one day before the track maintenance plan is introduced tomorrow morning. firefighters on alert and startled, frightened metro riders at federal center. >> a big, explosion of light. richard: ray duke was riding in from shady grove around 6:25 app. the train pulled in, the lights dimmed. suddenly -- >> a bright light. i'm thinking what is this? then the doors open. a woman runs out and says get off the train as fast as you can. >> an arcing insulator that forced the single tracking in repairs. >> whatever they need to do to make the metro the safest it can be for riders is what they need to do. and soon. >> this is one day before metro g.m. paul wiedefeld will announce his track maintenance plan. it will likely include single tracking. multiple station closures at one time. abbreviated train schedules in the weekend. it could go on for months. >> you need to go in there, close down part of the system. rebuild that part. >> metro workers now get only 33 hours a week for repairs. but two hours of setup and teardown each night reduces the number to 19 hours a week. >> wi are trying to fix 117-mile train system. it is not working. >> these are self-inflicted wounds that the metro hasn't caught up with. they need to do serious maintenance. >> a tough, tough day at that federal center station. that is the second incident in one day. a lot of folks saying the new maintenance plan can't come anytime soon. reporting live, richard reeve, fuse news. leon: all right. thank school's parking lot. we are told no students were involve and that the shooting is domestic in nature. of course we'll be following the developing story throughout the night and have the latest for you at leon: jaup date on the frightening scene in tysons corner we watched where a man drove a hummer in the front door of the silver diner. witnesses say he backed up and hit the diner several more times and then he set the vehicle on fire. police say that the man was a cook there at the diner and he deliberately drove in the building. a man pinned by the hummer but is expected to recover. driver was unhurt. management is hoping to reopen by sunday. mother's day. coming up here next at 6:00, a deadly shooting caught on video. you see it here. a man walks up to off-duty police officer and shoots him. 18 times. but this man is only going to be serving ten years in prison. the reason for that short sentence and the courtroom plea for mercy from the victim's wife coming up. ♪ stand by th the newspapers caused smoke incident on the track at central center in southwest washington. the metro station there is going to be closed for the rest of the everything. maureen: new at 6:00, disturbing video. a man walking up to a stepfather, melt police officer and shooting him to death firing the gun 18 times. today a judge sentenced antwan james to 10 years in prison. the light sentence comes in part because of a plea from the victim's wife. antwan james' mother. >> the security camera video is grainy and halting but it tells a terrible story. april 2013, upper marlboro. a white dog plays. somebody spreads fertilizer. and joseph newell a detective appears to change a lightbulb. he sets up a ladder. then his stepson antwan james appears also in a white shirt. he has a gun a freeze the image there. newell falls, james shoots his stepfather 18 times. >> it was an egregious crime, evil crime. >> newell's eswife today after seeing james sentenced to ten years for the crime. >> i feel like it needs to be more. >> the daughter trying to understand. >> i'm happy it's finally over. >> it was caught on camera, james charged with murder was found guilty only of involuntary manslaughter. in large part because of the support of his mother. newell's wife. today at sentencing mrs. newell told the judge, "demons are real. i watched satan take over my son's body." the other side of this once blended now divided family will never agree with that explanation. >> murder is murder. it's notten voluntary manslaughter -- it's not involuntary manslaughter. it's 11:00, a "7 on your side" exclusive. we speak one-on-one with a young woman from chantilly whose parents died in a murder-suicide. nina parisi is now 20 years old and for the first time she is sharing her story of pain, love, courage. she is talking with our fighting back reporter jennifer donelan. two and a half years ago her father paul parisi, a respected a.t.f. agent shot and killed his wife. the mother of two was a popular teacher at franklin middle school. nina and her younger sister were home at the time when the gunfire erupted. now nina is speaking publicly for the first time to down. we are hearing the capital south is also now shut down for the evening. no traffic between l'enfant and eastern market. now stations on the orange, blue, silver line shut down for the evening. maureen: a tough night. leon: it is going to be a bad night. steve: so the rain, hevier rain arrives later tonight and through the day tomorrow. for saturday morning most should be out of here by then for race for the cure. that is the good news. bad news is that it's cool out there this evening. dreary. ten days of clouds and rain across the method atlantic -- mid-atlantic. looking out at the because of smoke now. it's shut down for the night. kevin lewis is standing by. what is the latest? kevin: capitol south in addition to federal center will be shut down for the rest of the evening. the metro police here are standing guard at thestop of the escalator leading down to the federal center southwest station here. there is no more smoke inside the station. the actual smoke incident was minor. he arrived there was a light odor of smoke. no smoke visible even. but the take-home is if you are still trying to get home, there is no service between l'enfant plaza and eastern market. you have to take one of the shuttle buses to station that is actively running trains or find another means transportation. uber and lyft charging high rates now because you have thousands of people looking for alternate modes of transportation. hopefully it's back to normal by tomorrow. this station has had issues this morning with the arcing insulator. this evening was due to the trash underneath the third rail. both produced smoke. live in southwest. i'm kevin lewis. abc7 news. leon: so officials there are convinced that the two events had nothing to do with each other and this is something that is minor, not a major deal, right? kevin: yeah. exactly. this was coincidental in nature. morning was arcing insulator. this was trash. the customers are frustrated nonetheless. leon:
