identified as esteban santiago. according to the latest information in the news room he flew in fort lauderdale today. the gun he used was in his checked bag. chaos on the tarmac as passengers are forced to evacuate fort lauderdale hollywood international airport. inside a gunman. according to law enforcement, he opened fire on innocent people in terminal two. the deadly attack happening in the baggage claim area. >> typically in the baggage claim there could be hundreds of people at any one time. i don't know what the number was at that particular time. no. q: witnesses say the only reason he stopped firing is because he ran out of amma. law enforcement swarming the area. >> when we apprehended him, the suspect was arrested without incident. q: it happened at 1:00 at one of the 25 busiest airports in the nation. we understand that all the flights into fort lauderdale right now are being diverted to miami or west palm beach. flights scheduled to leave fort la the suspect's name is esteban santiago. he is 26 years old. at this point there is no motive to report. right now authorities believe he did act alone. from the satellite center i'm q mccray, abc7 news. jonathan: thanks very much. some other information we're getting from the wires and from some of the partners, abc news is one of those. we understand that esteban santiago is in his early 20's, 23, 24, maybe 25. he did have military i.d. on him at the time. we are not sure if he was in the military. there are reports, though, from eyewitnesses after he opened fire he never said a word. they said he went in the bathroom, got his gun out of the checked bag. loaded it. came out of the bathroom, without saying a word opened fire. in the shooting he reloaded and continued shooting. chris lee was one of the passengers inside terminal two in baggage area and he joins us live on the phone. chris, i understand you have been on the tarmac. we are looking at live pictures. hundreds of passengers have been sitting on the tarmac for hours waiting for authorities to figure out and sort o tell us what you saw and experienced this afternoon. chris: that is right. i've been sitting for an hour or two. i was sitting in the gate. i wasn't in the baggage claim area. i saw the shooting was on tv. we were watching on tv. about an hour later after we saw it on the there was a giant stampede coming down terminal three. everyone was running, screaming. saying, "go, go, go, get down." i kind of got trampled and taken in the stampede. everyone was running outside to the tarmac. that is where i am now. jonathan: we should probably clarify for folks at home. you are saying it was an hour later. the reason there was chaos even an hour after the shooting is because once some of the tactical teams ran into terminal two, which is where delta and air canada fly into, they thought they had the area secure. but then passengers started hearing reports of more shooting taking place at a different part of the airport. walk us through that. what happened? chris: yeah, i mean, that is there might be a second shooter. but i'm not sure about that to be honest. i think the reason why it was so delayed that hour because somebody panicked. that just set off a chain reaction. everybody started running. it got bigger and bigger. the entire terminal started running out the door at that time. jonathan: chris, walk us through what is happening right now out there. chris: we are waiting on the tarmac right now. the airport staff is waiting. the t.s.a., they are sanding around. i'm not sure if anyone knows what is going on. we are just sitting and waiting to hear what is happening. jonathan: chris, we appreciate you taking the time. we can fill you in on some of the back story. after the initial shooting took place and the authorities descended on the airports. so of the questions are cutting in and out and we are going to black. they are coming in the feed. so of them are live pictures. after the shooting took place there were reports another shooting at a garage in terminal one. police immediately started racing to that. we are now getting word from broward in a stairwell and that created enough panic, when you imagine the tensions were so following a shooting situation. this is what we know at this hour. lone gunman got off an air canada flight. we believe it may have just flown in from quebec. we are trying to nail all of this down. this is fluid events so we are trying to nail down the facts. he got off the flight. he claimed his bag. he checked his pistol. when you travel with firearms you have to check them much like you would golf clubs except you have to identify to t.s.a. that you are traveling with a firearm. he claimed his bag. went into the bathroom according to authorities, loaded the gun. came out of the baggage area. this is not a secure area. you don't have to go through a screening to get in the baggage area. without saying a word according to a number of eyewitnesses he opened fire and can can continued to shoot. five people killed. eight wounded and as many as 13 taken to the hospital. lindsey mastis has more coverage because we have team coverage this afternoon c what do you have for us? lindsey: there was so much chaos going on. at that airport with ari fleischer, the former press secretary under george bush, he talked about shots fire and everyone running. another woman said she saw the crowd screaming with panic. she said we laid down on our children and hid under the tables. i'm still shaking. a lot of people are posting picture what is it was like on the tarmac. you can see from their vantage point what it was like to be out there. not everyone evacuated. if you take a look at this video right here from social media you notice a lot of people left the luggage, the bags. everything they left behind to evacuate. very few people were left in the terminal. if we take a look at this video here as well. this shows what it looked like on the outside of that airport. as they shut it down. making sure that no cars could get through and get close. a lot of people on social media letting their friends and family know that they are okay. back to you. jonathan: all right. thanks very much. we can alsotell you that th investigation along with homeland security and a.t.f. we will continue to follow all developments as they happen. you can sign up for text alerts and get it to your phone if something should happen. go to wjla.com/text. we will continue getting more information and as we do, we will bring updates to you as soon as we get them. back to you, michelle. michelle: thank you. much of the south -- let's talk weather now -- is under a winter weather alert today. as a powerful storm makes its way out of the gulf north. this is what it looks like in little rock, arkansas, today. and part of our area could be in for snow before it's all over. stormwatch7 chief meteorologist doug hill here with the forecast. doug: is storm center continues to move northeast. off the north carolina coast tomorrow it will intensify and we'll watch it closely. in advance of that, the winter weather advisories issued overnight and tomorrow for anne arundel, prince george, calvert, charles, northern virginia, spotsylvania. these are the winter storm warning from to virginia and north carolina and over on the eastern shore as well. the warning areas could be snowfall. a sharp cutoff between a little bit of snow and a lot of snow. flurries reaching ground right now on doppler radar. let me show you the breadth of the storm. a lot of rain, snow and ice. this is all sliding to the northeast. we will be on the northern fringe of this. at the same time the storm developing strong northerly winds will develop. this could help us. if the winds are strong enough, long enough it could keep the snow farther south. but right now 6:00 in the morning, here is the edge of the snow line just south of the district. it could creep northward for a while during the mid-to-late morning. right now we think by early afternoon we should pull to the east. the gusty winds and the cold air will continue. as a result, here is what we are calling for. north and west, flurry or two. city to south and east, dusting to an inch. one to three inches farther south through southern maryland, four to eight. farther south and east will get more than four to eight, that we will talk more about this and let you know what is up with the weather pattern when i join you here in nine or ten minutes. michelle: thank you. stay connected with the stormwatch7 weather team as the storm moves north. you can do that through the wjla.com websijte and the abc7 facebook and twitter feeds. you can also download the an hour before that, the president-elect received a briefing from intelligence officials about the russian hacking of the 2016 election. as karen travers reports, after the meeting donald trump said the hack had no effect on the election. >> the chair declares the joint session dissolved. karen: with that, it's official. donald trump is the winner of the election. congress certifying the votes in a joint session. >> i object, people are horrified by the overwhelmin evidence of the russian hacking. karen: like so much of the presidential campaign it was not without drama. >> i object. karen: house democrats standing up nearly a dozen time to try to contest ballots. >> there is no debate. it is over. karen: in new york, trump and vice president elect mike pence getting briefed by top intelligence officials on election cyber attacks. u.s. intelligence officials say the findings are clear. the cyber trail lead directly to the kremlin. and to russian president vladimir putin. despite his ongoing public skepticism, trump said his briefing friday was, "a constructive meeting and conversation." in a statement, trump pointed the finger at china and other countries saying they are also trying to break through american cyber infrastructure. with two weeks until he takes the oath of office, trump defending his win saying there was absolutely no effect on the outcome of the election. including the fact that there was no tampering whatsoever with voting machines. but it is notable after his briefing, donald trump still did not publicly acknowledge or accept the intelligence community consensus view that russia engaged in cyber attacks in an attempt to interfere with the election. reporting from northwest, karen travers, abc7 news. michelle: today, d.c. mayor muriel bowser and the u.s. secret service held a briefing on the upcoming sam ford is live in northwest tonight with some of those plans. sam? sam: we are in front of the capitol at the northwest side looking at the construction they are doing here getting ready for the inauguration january 20 of donald trump. but again today, some city and federal and regional officials got together to talk about what will happen here. an array of regional, local officials came to the news conference and they attempted to alert the public how it will go two weeks from today. >> every four years our government works overtime to keep everyone safe. sam: at least 8,000 additional police and national guard from around the country will be here to assist m.p.d. and park police for the 8,000 to 9,000 trump supporters and protesters. >> an event of this size is going to necessarily disrupt the city. we are doing everything we can working together. together with the city and with law enforcement. and public safety partners to lessen the disruption. sam: metro will open an hour earlier that day from 4:00 a.m. until midnight. for security and crowd control purpose, a list of stations downtown plus the pentagon will be closed. they are urging folks to buy in advance a special $10 metro fare card, good all day inauguration day. >> it's not only a great bargain but it prevents you from standing in line. sam: the participants say they have been working to put it together since last april. also the question of the protesters. d.c. m.p.d. says it has issued three permits for protests on freedom plaza, park police could not say at this point, they say they are still waiting for some word from the presidential inauguration committee before they issue permits. reporting live from northwest washington, i'm sam news. michelle: okay. alison: thank you. we told you earlier today that president-elect trump had intelligence briefings. on the same day this morning he took aim at his successor on the show "the apprentice." he said arnold schwarzenegger got swamped or destroyed in the ratings. the tweet came hours after vice president joe biden had a strong message for the incoming commander-in-chief. >> grow up, donald. grow up. time to be an adult. you are president. you got to do something. show us what you have. you are going to propose legislation. we're going to get to debate it. let the public decide. let them vote in congress. let's see what happens. alison: of course, as we showed you earlier vice president biden did preside over the counting of the electoral college votes on capitol hill today. at the end of the process he denied those objections and said as you heard him say, "it is over." michelle? michelle: time now for a check on the traffic situation, as folks get ready to weekend. erik smith has details. erik: michelle, not too bad of a ride overall. we have delays on the wilson bridge. this is the outer loop out of virginia to maryland. the earlier debris at 210 did clear. the further you get the better it is on the stretch. those slow off of van dorn street heading that way. looking at the beltway, that is looking better. that won't be too bad. looking at the capital beltway at the american legion bridge near george washington parkway. you can see the outer loop is tough here. the delays begin on the maryland side of things heading down toward georgetown pike from earlier crash there. so that is all wrapped up. inner loop traffic past connecticut avenue is tough as you head in toward silver spring. that is all from the traffic desk for now. back to you. michelle: all right. thank you so much. once again we are talking snow. alison: yes! again. doug: this morning it was north and west of washington. all the action shifts south and east of washington tomorrow. let's get you started. if you get far enough south and east, take a look at the advisories. in the purple color, winter weather advisories from arkansas northeast to the metro area. part of the metro area. the areas in pink, those are all winter storm warnings. a fairly narrow band. from deep south, georgia, carolinas to southeastern virginia, southern maryland and the eastern shore. all of this to take place overnight and through the day tomorrow. in fact, the national weather service issued blizzard warning for akamac county in virginia and in extreme southeast virginia. that will be a wild portion of the storm. if you notice, you don't have to go that far to the get to the point there is very little snow at all. you can see the rain and the snow over southwestern virginia and north carolina. colder northerly winds flow in. the more cold air, the more dry cool air and it will fuel the storm but it might suppress heavier show you the accumulation forecast. we will keep an eye on it but it's a case where the farther south and east you go from washington the more the weather issue it will be. the satellite and radar, rain and snow to the north. the future cast 6:30 in the morning, snow across the area. there is the northern edge of it. you get a mix. heavy snow, colder air midday. fairly light metro to the north. but anything east and south is where the heavier amounts could be. early afternoon the snow will be out of here and that will be that. how much? flurries for large part north and west of washington. dusting to an inch in the eastern suburbs. one to three inches farther southeast, four to eight farther southeast. farther you go, the hier the snow is likely to be -- heavier for the snow will be. it's cold tonight down to 22. light snow overnight. 27 tomorrow. touch of the afternoon sunshine after the snow in the morning. then partly sunny, windy 25 degrees on sunday. extended outlook shows cold weather continuing through monday. then a warm-up. showers wednesday and thursday to the 50's. it may be 63 by friday. it will stay mild through next weekend. alison: all right. thanks, doug. >> wheel of fortune! alison: how about history for you on friday. on this date in 1975, "wheel of fortune" premiered. it's the longest running syndicated quiz show in history. you can watch it, of course, every day at 7:00 on abc7. michelle: coming up at 4:00 -- >> the fact is we don't know everything. michelle: the city of lights recognizable behind the smog. where else people are paying big alison: new information about the raid at the prince george's county liquor board headquarters that ended with four people facing charges. brad bell is live in greenbelt. what happened today, brad? brad: well, you know what? after all the revelations yesterday it was quiet here at the courthouse. no new information from the feds. but we have been working the story hard and what we learned is the f.b.i. was even more active than we knew yesterday. abc7 news has learned from this prince george's county scrap metal yard was among several locations sempled by the f.b.i. in connection with the widening probe of brides paid to officials by the liquor store owners. in addition, sources say at least one other business connected to a state senator was searched. that is in addition to the p.g. liquor board and those arrested yesterday as they arrested the store owner and the board member sud and the administrator david son for allegedly taking and arranging bribes. late this afternoon, the office of the governor larry hogan announced sud had re-signed his position. the governor wants more. >> it wouldn't be a bad idea for all of the board resign over the disgraceful claims. we have heard rumors about decades of what might be going on. i don't have all the facts yet. brad: it's convoluted bu bottom line f.b.i. says officials were selling their votes. now on monday we expect the parties to reconvene here in courthouse for detention hearing for one of those arrested. we will learn more at that point. the feds said they will release the identity of the elected officials probably next week. when we come back at 5:00, we will hear how county executive rushern baker is reacting. he says he is mad about all of this. in greenbelt, brad bell, abc7 news. michelle: coming up on "abc7 news at 4:00" -- the president's plea to republicans before they dismantle the affordable care act. jonathan: we continue to follow the break news from the fort lauderdale airport. this is pictures showing hundreds if not thousands of people stuck on the tarmac as police continue to investigate. we know five people were shot dead. eight others wounded in the baggage claim area. coming up for us we have the latest o why are you checking i want to see if it changed. credit scores don't change that much do they? really? i'll take it! sir, your credit... is great, right? when was the last time you checked? yeah, i better check my credit score. here, try credit karma. it's free. alright, no more surprises. credit karma. give yourself some credit. jonathan: back with the breaking news from fort lauderdale, florida. that is where there has been a shooting in the baggage claim area. it happened at 1:135 this afternoon. what we know at this hour, 236-year-old, police identifying as esteban santiago. they say he came in on an air canada flight. he got his checked bag which was a he walked in the bathroom, took it out of its case, loaded it. walked in the baggage claim area and without saying a word opened fire and he kept shooting. reloaded and kept shooting. when he ran out of ammo, he threw his gun away from him and lied on the ground spread eagle waiting for police to arrest him. five people are dead. eight others are wounded. q mccray is joining us from the satellite center. what are you hearing? casino as you know -- q: as you know, this is a hectic and a tragic scene to say the least. i'll go over the numbers one more time. we know five people are dead, eight others are injure and the man behind this all is in custody. the footage that we are getting from fort lauderdale, hollywood, international airport really speaks for itself. you have to take a look at it. chaos. confusion. hundreds of passengers on the tarmac. law enforcement swarming the area. we know this all happened in the baggage claim area of terminal two. there, according to witnesses, the pulled out a gun and started shooting. apparently the only reason why he stopped, according to witnesses, is because he ran out of ammo. that is according to witnesses. he laid down and he was arrested. this happening at 1:00 today. since then there have been other close calls if you will. emergency alarms going off in terminal one. and some people also running for their lives after supposedly hearing other gunshots coming from parking garages and terminal one. now those have been unconfirmed reports as of this point. the broward county sheriff department has not confirmed that as of yet. the man being accused of all of this, esteban santiago, is in custody as we speak. he is 26 years old. right now motive for the shooting is unknown. that is the latest from the sat center. back to you, my friend. jonathan: thank you very much. with a situation like this, it is always fluid. some of the information we get early on may change. some of it we are getting now. never had a passenger on the manifest as esteban. they said they didn't have anybody there and didn't have checked guns on the flight. these things are changing. he started to open fire and people didn't panic right away because they weren't sure what was happening. when they realized what happened, chaos ensued and people raced for the exit to get out of there. the broward county sheriff a short time ago in a news conference said he is the only shooter they have in custody. they do not believe there was ever any other shooter. they think people's nerves were on high alert. they may have heard something and backfire from a barking garage and reacted accordingly. as far as a motive, there is no motive given at all. lauderdale international airport shut down. no flights coming or going. that is creating a ripple effect at all airports across the country. brianne carter picks up the team coverage at reagan national with that side of the story. brianne: here is what we know at this point. none of the flights from here along the tarmac are taking off for the fort lauderdale international airport. the f.a.a. says there is now a ground stop. they are not receiving or having any flights take off from the fort lauderdale international airport with it closed. we do know some of the flights were able to get off the ground ahead of that. just within the last half hour a flight from fort lauderdale landed here at reagan national airport. take you inside from what we have seen. it's not a massive stepped up security presence. we have seen a number of police inside the airport today. what we have seen is a number of the folks showing up here to realize that the flight has either been delayed or has been delayed more than once. still at this point, we are have some folks hoping that will get off the ground later this everything. earlier today we talk to folks who said they were not going to take that chance. they were not going to sit and wait. they have rebooked the flight for sunday. >> that was my concern. you know, that there would be a creeping delay. we would be at the airport and the families would have to come back to pick us up. that is not convenient. then they want to book us tomorrow morning but we thought it's sunday. brianne: travel waivers for a number of airports are issued. you will want to check with your carrier. we did just have a flight within the last half hour arrive at reagan national airport. they are from fort lauderdale. what passengers on that flight are saying coming up tonight at 5:00. reporting live, brianne carter, abc7 news. jonathan: all right. thanks very much for that. we can tell you the f.b.i. is part of this investigation. they have not ruled out terrorism but given us any indication if that is what it is. obviously, if anything should happen you can sign up for the text alerts at wjla.com/text. so if something should happen immediately our web team will immediately hit your phone and let you know what is going on. you will get an update. that is latest from the "live desk." back to you. michelle: all right, jonathan. thank you. new developments tonight regarding dump truck that crashed in a house in oxon hill before christmas. now the driver is facing several charges. at the time, he claimed he was run off the road. but police say he made up entire story. police in prince george's county are trying to figure out if the a.t.m.'s recovered in a u haul truck in d.c. were stolen from gas stations in the county. this is new surveillance video of a smash-and-grab at a station in hyattsville. three men used the u-haul truck to dislodge the machine before loading it up on taking it off. it's all, it is one of six similar cases in december. four a. in d.c. alison: all right. let's talk about the weather now. we had a little bit of snow last night. and now we are looking at more for saturday. doug: a little bit in our area but the farther southeast you go, the bigger the deal will be. you go from the area with no snow at all to blizzard warns over southeast virginia and the lower eastern shore of virginia. it will be a powerful storm. when we pull back on the images you will see we are on the northern fringes of a larger system. here we go with coverage here. we should tell you there is a good chance metro area south and east, you will wake up to snow falling. the forth north and west from the district, probably nothing more than a flurry even if that. tonight cloudy skies continue. we will drop in mid-20's. snow developing overnight we think. by 7:00 in the morning, about 25 degrees. future cast will start to unlock the clues here. as you go through late tonight we stay cloudy with the temperatures in the 20's. then we get to 3:30 in the morning we see the moisture move up from the south. snow developing and the cold air. the temperatures don't do much. through the morning hours stay cold. teens to north. 20 to the sut but then the shift is on, all the heavy stuff starts to fall over the eastern sections of the east coast all the way down through the coastal carolinas. very gusty winds out of the north and west. we think at 2:00, it should be the end of it as it rapidly exits. it will be colder and breezier tomorrow especially on sunday. as far as the forecast the stormwatch7 weather team thinks we will see generally flurries. the city north and west. the farther south and east you go coating to an inch. one to three inches in the winter weather advisories to the south. then you get to the heavy duty snow, four to eight inches. blizzard conditions because of the high winds in the hampton roads area. so a major storm. as far as what will happen after that, it will improve here. get to 30 on monday and warmer by the end of next week. alison: okay, doug. thank you. we all know how the forecast can change. so stay connected with the stormwatch7 team all weekend at wjla.com or through the abc7 facebook and twitter feeds. you can download the stormw or the smart phone. still to come at 4:00 -- >> everyone wants to see the blue skies but right now it's impossible. michelle: the length some people are force alison: we are following breaking news out of fairfax county, where police tell us a woman is dead and a man is in police say they think it's a domestic situation and that there is no threat to the public. we do have a crew on the way to the scene. we are going to bring you more information as soon as we get it. michelle: right now, imagine if this is what you saw when you walked outside. this is what people in northern china, what we are referring to, not the baby, have been dealing with for weeks now as a cloud of smog descends on places like beijing. the air quality is more than 50 times worse than the level the world health organization considers safe. it has some people looking for ways to keep the inside clean. >> her life just began. the air she breathes in and out is such a bad quality. i couldn't sleep. two nights i couldn't sleep. michelle: so far the family has spent purifiers and $500 every few weeks to change the filters. they have also spent another $5,000 for ventilation system. alison: wow! that is not the only part of the world dealing with the problem. look at paris. paris saw its highest pollution in a decade last week. they are blaming car exhaust and wood fires for all of the tiny particles in the air. still ahead -- >> do not let anyone ever make you feel like you don't matter or you don't have a place in our american story. alison: parting words from the first lady and she and her husband prepare for wife after the white -- life after the whie house. >> they cars drive past the future home of the first family. >> it's exciting. i'm looking forward to hopefully meeting him and his family and possibly welcoming them to the neighborhood. ryan: castillo says possibly because his home a few doors down is up for sale. they have spent 20 years here but they put the home on the market before the president announced he is moving to the neighborhood and before evanka trump bought a home around the corner. >> there is a time for everything. ryan: the home is listed at $3.8 million. it has four bedrooms. four a finished basement the couple uses as office space. >> it's very warm. generous, that speaks to their personality. they have had fundraisers here. it's a home for entertainment. ryan: it has been on the market for two months and they are showing interest to live next to the most desirable neighbors. >> this is one of the more special parts of the home. the backyard with beautiful landscaping. the owner says it almost makes you feel like you trump and the obamas. a lot of security. meanwhile, sp obamas. michelle obama gave what will be her last public speech as first lady today. if it was anything, it was emotional. she spoke at an event honoring the 2017 school counselor of the year. on several occasions the first lady's voice cracked as she thanked her supporters and told children there to reach for the stars. >> i am so grateful to all of you for your passion and your dedication and all the hard work on behalf of our next generation. i can think of no better way to end my time as first lady than celebrating with all of you. so, i want to close today by simply saying thank you. thank you for everything you do for our kids and for our country. being your first lady has been the greatest honor of my life. i hope i have made you proud. alison: very emotional. michelle: you can see how everybody around her were moved by the words as well. alison: probably speaking as a mom, too, to ch teachers. michelle: she has been a great role model. all right. we, before leaving office today, president obama issued a bit of a challenge to republican lawmakers before repealing the affordable care act. president obama: make your team and make the republican members of congress come up with things that they can show will make this work better for people. if thigh are convincing i think you will find there are a lot of democrats out there, including me, that would be prepared to support it. michelle: president-elect donald trump has called for obamacare to be repealed on his first day in office. but a new study out of the george
