good evening. and we begin tonight with new developments. what we now know about that deadly drone mistake, meant to hit al qaeda those cia drones also killing two innocent men. an american and an italian man. the american on the left there, warren weinstein, a father and grandfather. his transformation after years in captivity. this is one of the last images his family would see. tonight, what his family told me about the last time they saw him. and their message to the obama administration tonight. abc's chief white house correspondent jonathan karl takes us step by step through the dramatic mission and the moment it went wrong. >> reporter: the two hostages warren wean stein and italian giovanni lo porto were hidden deep in the mountainous and lawless region near pakistan's border with afghanistan. the cia had been watching it continuously for hundreds of hours, becoming convinced dangerous al qaeda operatives were living there and that there were no civilians inside. january 14th, cia headquarters in langley gives the order. sending in a drone to fire missiles into pound. but soon, the tragic mistake comes into focus. the u.s. learns innocent civilians may have been there after all. and this month, the confirmation. weinstein and lo porto were both killed in the strike. >> as president, and as commander in chief, i take full responsibility for all our counterterrorism operations. i profoundly regret what happened. on behalf of the united states government i offer our deepest apologies to the families. >> reporter: and aide worker and peace korms veteran, the 73-year-old weinstein was kidnapped in pakistan in 2011 just two days before he was scheduled to go home. his wife and daughter spoke to david muir shortly after seeing him in this 2013 hostage video. >> when he looked straight into that camera and said it seems that i have been totally abandoned. >> abandoned. and forgotten. >> i wanted to die, right there on the spot. because he has no idea how hard we've tryied to get him back. the funny thing is that i always take him to the airport and i always pick him up and he sees my lip begin to quiver and he says oh please don't cry. and that was the last time i saw him. >> what would you say to him if you could? >> i would just tell him how much i miss him. i would just tell him that i love him and that i think about him every day. >> that family has been through so much. we've been following their journey to bring their father home. after all the tears, sitting down with us, tonight, the anger. >> reporter: they blame al qaeda for mr. weinstein's death, but david, they had some tough words today for the obama administration saying that the support they received from the u.s. government throughout this ordeal was, quote, inconsistent and disappointing and adding that they hope mr. weinstein's death, quote, finally prompts the u.s. government to take its responsibility seriously to support hostages and their families. >> all right, jon karl live at the white house tonight. as you know jon, one more key development in the deadly strikes. there were two other men killed two americans who had traveled overseas with a chilling mission, to join al qaeda. one of them adam gadahn, known for his own videos tearing up his u.s. passport and trying to taunt america. abc ceason justice correspondent pierre thomas on the boy who grew up in california one of the most wanted for a decade, now dead tonight. >> reporter: listen to a terrorist threatening his own country. >> the streets of america shall run red with blood. >> reporter: he was a suburban california kid. a lover of heavy metal who became one of the most wanted men on the planet. the grandson of a jewish doctor. adam perlman, morphed into adam gadahn gadahn. the american mouthpiece of al qaeda. >> september 11th demonstrated that america is not invincible. >> reporter: he was the first person charged with treason in the u.s. since the world war ii era. even after those charges, gadahn was unrepentant. in 2011 urging radicals to attack inside the u.s. >> so, what are you waiting for? >> and pierre is with us now from washington. pierre adam gadahn one of the military's most wanted terrorists for a decade? >> reporter: david, there was a million dollar bounty for gadahn. he's been hunted for more than a decade. in many ways he was a unique figure because of his all-american voice. >> all right, pierre thomas tonight from washington. thank you. meantime also from d.c. tonight, the close call between a drone and a passenger plane coming in for a landing today. the crew oaf a trans-states airline state spotting a drone. the pilots calling the tower, the drone, just 200 feet away. >> hey, at about 1,200 feet a.g.o. it know it's bizarre, but it looked like a little drone went beneath us. >> the faa has been concerned about drones flying too close to passenger jets. they are investigating tonight. meantime the mystery deepens after another scare in the sky. the flight out of chicago, the pilot suddenly descending 27,000 neat just minutes. after several passengers lost consciousness. at first, everyone thought it was just one passenger. tonight, we learned there were several. abc's david kerley again this evening. >> reporter: a passenger in distress at 37,000 feet on the united airlines sky west flight from chicago. >> she was gray. her color looked eded awful. >> reporter: hearing passengers are passing out, fearing depressurization the pilots dezone quickly. a nose dive says one passenger. >> the airframe shaking and we dropped very quickly. >> reporter: dropping 27,000 feet in less than eight minutes. >> 4,000, sky west 305 tango. >> reporter: but it wasn't just one passenger as the airline first said. >> we got her oxygen. as soon as she got in the oxygen she was alert. >> reporter: passenger and nurse mary cunningham helps a fellow passenger. >> the person sitting right behind her passed out. >> reporter: moments later, the nurse herself, feeling the effects. >> i started to feel shortle of breath. >> reporter: in all, three passenger terps passed out. all in the middle of the plane. rows 11 and 12. >> inbound flight, unknown medical problem. >> reporter: an emergency landing in buffalo. >> they did request a second ambulance. >> reporter: ems workers checked a total of 15 passengers all released. >> you just become lightheaded and see, like dolts. >> reporter: sky west says there was no indication of depressurization which would have effected the entire plane. so, what was it?
