♪ ♪ if you are a regular of "world news now," your schedule may make you more aware of the assortment of energy drinks that exist. >> one such company, monster energy, now under investigation. why? being accused of encouraging undersage students to mix the drinks with alcohol. jim avila with the story. >> reporter: they are the monstrously caffeinated energy drinks marketed to 20-somethings, increasingly popular as an alcoholic mixer an college campuses. the new york attorney general is taking aim revealing e-mails which he says prove monster energy not only recruits students to promote for their caffeinated drinks an campus but also throws parties encouraging alleged underaining freshmen and sophomores to mix alcohol and energy drinks. >> there are large, almost cooler-like containers that are provided with the monster logo wherein the students mix alcohol and the monster drnks. >> reporter: monster calls the student promoters collegiate ambassadors. according to one of the young men contacted by abc news, they are paid $100 per party. enkorgeed to snap photos like this at parties and report on the parties in e-mails to the company. like we had a nice size party and four kegs, two trash cans of jungle juice and five cases of monster. the nork attorney general's office has subpoenaed documents about the collegiate program. >> we have evidence, e-mails that demonstrate that 18-year-old and 19-year-olds are being approached and encouraged to drink the alcohol with the caffeinated beverages. >> reporter: monster denies the accusations saying monster did nothing illegal or deceptive and monster will continue to be marketed in an appropriate, legal, safe and responsible manner. jim avila, abc news, washington. >> the problem is alcohol is a depressant and some of the stuff in that drink is ginsing. when you combine the two, it can lead to cardiac issues. >> oh, now you tell me. could have used that information a couple years ago. no, they are right. it's a problem. you probably shouldn't drink the drinks anyway an their own. probably shouldn't drink alcohol either. you certainly shouldn't put them together. >> t.j. is a product of what happens years later. >> this is what happens. i didn't turn out so bad, did i? pierre thomas, abc news, washington. health officials at two american airports have been sent scrambling over ebola scares. a child passenger en route to chicago's o'hare from liberia reportedly started vomiting, was rushed to the hospital this morning remains isolated for observation. the child's family has no symptoms but remains under quarantine. an adult passenger traveling from liberia reportedly nauseous and with di reara also remains in the hospital in chicago for observation. the cdc has determined not to test any of the passengers for ebola. meantime, a passenger arriving at newark international airport from west africa also exhibiting symptoms is now in isolation at a local hospital undergoing evaluation for ebola. a cdc spokeswoman confirmed the passenger was singled out under the government's new screening procedures. the department of homeland security is now routing all passengers from liberia, sierra leone and guinea through only five u.s. airports. newark, jfk, o'hare, dulles and atlanta. some good news this morning an the ebola front. american cameraman ashoka muck pew is reported to be ebola free. he'll be allowed to leave the biocontainment unit at the nebraska medical center this morning. his blood no longer shows signs of the virus. mukpo will now be free to head back to his home state of rhode island. the texas nurse nina pham's condition has been upgradesed from fair to good. pham was admitted to the national institutes of health last week. she's one two of nurses in dallas who became infected with ebola while treating thomas eric duncan who died from the disease earlier this month. president obama is among those mourning the death of legendary newsman ben bradlee. the former "washington post" editor died yesterday at his home in washington. abc's david muir has a look back at his towering career. >> reporter: he was a newspaper legend reporting an history and making it. but even this seasoned journalist was surprised at what a president could do. >> in my naive way when i first came to this town, i didn't think presidents lied. >> reporter: a veteran of world war ii, a buddy of jfk. in 1968, ben bradley became the executive editor of the "washington post." for more than 20 years he was its fearless leader. fighting the government, determined to publish the pentagon papers in 1971. >> we are free to publish what we always were going to publish, which was material which in our mind the public had a right to know and which did no damage to the united states. >> reporter: that same determination a year later with the story that would reshape history. >> "washington post" reported today -- >> "the washington post" -- >> reporter: bradlee stood by those two fearless newspaper reporters, woodward and bernstein as they broke the watergate scandal. >> woodward and bernstein have done an extraordinary job. >> reporter: in "all the presidents men," bradlee was played by jason robartz. the post's reporting would help bring down the nixon administration. >> i shall resign the presidency effective at noon tomorrow. >> reporter: bradlee and his wife writer sale quinn very much a part of washington. quinn by his side as his health declined. >> i don't think we have ever been as loving with each other as we are now. >> reporter: when bradlee received the medal of freedom last year he was called a titan of journalism. david muir, abc news, new york. whanget a legend. >> i worked at "the washington post." one of my first jobs out of college. and one of the things that still remained, it was during the iraq war. people in the newsroom, editors, were not afraid to push back at the white house when they would call and disagree with some of the stories. i think that's one of the things with publisher katharine graham. they were very good friends. she always had his back. there's a story peter osnos tells about how kissinger was unhappy with some of his reporting. calls katharine graham and passes this note to ben bradlee and ben bradlee says put this in your baby book because this is like a badge of honor here. and stood by him. you hopior journalistic, your institution and newsrooms will support you against these huge titans. >> a lot of people argue that's not the case a lot of places anymore. we're all kind of in bed together. some will even accuse -- because you want access all the time but that's old school stuff, man. and -- wow. change the game. a lot of people can't say they absolutely changed the game. so we'll have more an that on abc throughout the day. we need to turn to the man, speaking of the white house. the man accused of just bursting into the front door, jumped the fence? he's been declared unfit to stand trial. at least for now. initials sayment of omar gonzalez came after a one-our screening. a judge ordered him to have a more in-depth competency evaluation. gonzalez is accused of carrying a knife into the white house and assaulting two secret service officers. three of the victims of a confessed serial killer in northwestern indiana have been identified. and officers are searching abandoned buildings in gary for more bodies. police say darren vann killed at least seven women. one was found in a motel friday and he led investigate tors a building where he dumped the others. >> while this cannot and should not be characterized as domestic violence, it is certainly clear violence against women. >> vann is a registered sex offender wths a long list of violence against women mean was convicted of a rape in 2009 in texas and ten years ago, police say he kicked don the door to his girlfriend's home and threatened to set her and himself on fire. the family of a former harlem globetrotter hoping he'll be found alive and well nearly two weeks after he vanished in northern california. rico omar harris went missing while driving from l.a. to his girlfriend's house in seattle. his car was found near a state park three days later with a dead battery. harris is 37 years old and 6'9", 280 pounds. a big guy. but described as a gentle giant. he'd taken a sales job in seattle and was planning to move in with his girlfriend. the head coach of the new jersey high school football team at the center of the hazing scandal has been suspended ingmp that decision was made after an emototional board of education meeting at which most of the speakers supported sayreville high's head coach george najjar. he and four of his assistants will be paid during their suspension. one administrator called the move wrenching but necessary. >> there were pervasive widespread and generally accepted and tolerated acts of harassmentment, intimidation and bullying in that program. >> the coach's suspension will continue spending the outcome of criminal investigation into the hazing allegations. seven students have been charged in the case. michael sam is once again without an nfl team. he's been released by the dallas cowboys. the openly gay sam spent seven weeks an the team's practice squad but was never placed an the active roster. he thanked the cowboys organization for the support he's received. he was let go because several previously injured cowboys are returning to action. sam is the first openly gay player ever drafted in the nfl. the first game of the world series between the royals and giants didn't take long to spark to life. san francisco got right to work in the top of the first. already up 1-0. hunter pence hit a two-run home run. the giants tacked on two more runs in the forth and two more in the seventh. the royals avoided being shutout with a home republican bun, but little, too late. san francisco wins 7-1. one royals fan pretty disappointed after that game. just game one. everybody calm don. the south korean guy known as the royals superfan. >> sung woo lee arrived at the airport wearing a sweatshirt with the words superfan. it's the second tomb he's made the 6500-mile trip to kc to see the royals play. the first time in august when his visit coincided with the streak of wins. he was given tickets to last night's game and seen sitting next to actor paul rudd. he's from the area. a big kansas city fan. they can try again tonight. just one game. he's really seen as the good luck charm for the royals. later in "the mx," turning ikea into something truly frightening. are shoppers in for a scare, though? that. we'll get into that later. we have to begin with details of this recall. those defective air bags. federal safety officials have expanded the recall to more than 6 million vehicles. >> there's special urgency for drivers in warm weather areas which make it more likely the air bags will explode. here's abc's brian ross. >> we've got a lady who just got killed in a car wreck. >> reporter: it follows a bizarre and deadly traffic accident late last month at this intersection in orlando, florida, with a dramatic call to 911. >> he just pulled her out of the car. he says her neck is severed. >> reporter: sheriff's deputies thought she'd been murdered given the injuries to her neck. they even released a photo of a possible person of interest who they have now cleared after learning the air bag in her honda was one of those, like this one, under recall because of the possibility it could explode and send dangerous metal shards flying through the car. >> based on the evidence the sheriff's office pulled out of the vehicle, they are leaning towards that decision, too. >> reporter: if confirmed, safety advocates say it would be the fourth death connected to air bags that did not perform as they are supposed to. >> this is like having an ied in your car. when it explodes, it sends shrapnel into the vehicle and peppers the occupants causing severe lacerations or in some cases death. >> reporter: the defective air bags are the latest example of what safety advocates say has been the repeated failure of federal officials to protect the public from highway hazards. including, as abc news has reported, highway guard rails which are supposed to absorb a head-on impact. there were demands from congress for action in the wake of a growing number of gruesome injuries and deaths in guardrail accidents. and a court finding monday that the manufacturer essentially lied to the government about the guardrails. now the federal highway administration has ordered the guardrail manufacturer, trinity industries of texas, to perform new crash tests on its guardrails or face the prospect of having them banned or revoked for use across the country. brian ross, abc news, new york. three teenage girls from the denver area are back home after the fbi says they tried to join isis fighters in syria. sources tell abc news promo videos like the one you're seeing here preaching the virtues of jihad and hatred of the west were key to convincing the girls to leave their families behind. >> public messaging and social media is as slick and as effective as any i've ever seen from a terrorist organization. >> the worried parents reported the girls missing last week. they made it as far as germany before being intercepted and returned to denver. unclear if they'll face any charges. isis fighters in syria say they intercepted weapons and other supplies dropped by american cargo planes. they posted the video you're seeing here. posted it online showing hand grenades and rocket propelled grenades meant for kurdish fighters. the pentagon is still analyzing the video, but the videos match those weapons dropped by the u.s. an american held in north korea for six months has been abruptly released without explanation. jeffrey fowle was charged with leaving a bible in a hotel room. he is now heading back to his wife and three kids in ohio after getting picked up by a military plane. two u.s. citizens are still being held by the north sentenced to hard labor for the same alleged hostile acts. tributes pouring in this morning for former "washington post" editor ben bradlee. the legendary newspaper man died yesterday. best known for his part in bringing down the presidency of richard nixon after the watergate scandal. bradlee battled alzheimer's for several years before his death. he died at his home in washington. bradlee was 93 years old. now to the high school football hazing scandal in new jersey. the board of education in sayreville, new jersey, took an unexpected step last night making the suspensions of the team's head coach and several assistants indefinite. abc's elizabeth herr has details. >> reporter: the school board debated and decided the suspension of sayreville's long time head football coach george najjar and his four assistant coaches was warranted. >> this evening, we took another wrenching yet important and necessary step. >> reporter: the decision is hitting a town already split over the earlier cancellation of the storied sayreville football team's entire season. >> i feel very sad for the situation that all these kids are going through right now. >> if the allegations of hazing are true, i sincerely feel for the victims and their families. >> reporter: the allegations are disturbing and the head of the sayreville schools is adamant the district's response was difficult but necessary. >> there were pervasive, widespread and generally accepted and tolerated acts of harassment, intimidation and bullying going on within that program. >> reporter: seven players, 15 to 17-year-olds are now fighting various criminal charges, including aggravated sexual assault, conspiracy and criminal restraint. prosecutors allege that in september, four freshmen members of the team were held against their will in the locker room, then sexually assaulted. and again, the school board has decided the five coaches who are also teachers at the school, they will remain suspended with pay pending the outcome of the ongoing criminal investigation. reena and t.j., back to you. >> elizabeth, thank you. we turn to a frightening scene in a middle school near dallas where more than 20 students were attacked by a swarm of bees. the sixth graders were playing a soccer match during an outdoor p.e. class when they accidentally disturbed a beehive buried in the irrigation system. some of the kids were stung up to a dozen times. you can see the video here that some had to be rushed to the hospital. they are all expected to be okay. we turn to a rescue in the chesapeake bay as a fire breaks out on a sailboat. a good samaritan pulled the man from the burning boat about five miles off the virginia coast. then the coast guard swooped in to transport the boater to dry land. a salvage company is working to remove that charred boat. here's a look at the nation's weather. a band of showers stretches across the midwest from southwest texas into northern minnesota. showers also in the northeast. heavy rain in the northwest where some areas could see more than five inches of rain by the end of the week. >> temperatures cooling across the nation. 50s and 60s across the northern tier. 70s, 80s in the deep south, l.a. phoenix still a hot spot. 92 degrees. turn to some troubling times for mcdonald's. shares of the world's largest burger chain were sliding yesterday as the rest of the market rallied. the reason? pretty simple here. mcdonald's issued a weak earnings report saying its sales around the world dropped more than 3% the last quarter. the company is moving quickly to try to reverse that slide tinkering with the menu and beginning to use a touch-screen ordering system. now a health headline
