Abcs alex perez has the story from chicagos ohare airport. Good morning, alex. Reporter good morning, bianna. It has been headache after headache. For those trying to travel for the holidays this weekend. Here at ohare and many airports theyre still playing catchup from a number of delays. In many parts of the country, this winter storm has been relentless. Wreck after wreck, the massive storm creating a nightmare during the busy Holiday Travel weekend. Rain leading to a dangerous glaze of ice across the central part of the country. And at airports along this storms path, crews working nonstop to deice planes and in oklahoma, look closely, the rain even freezing on this birds feathers. The ice buildup so thick, trees snapped and crumbled under its weight. Those trees are coming down pretty quick. Reporter and threatening homes. In kansas, many cars ended up upsidedown, some even stranded. This pickup truck, slid off the highway, killing the driver. In amarillo, and in other parts of texas, First Responders struggled just to keep up with the crashes. Treacherous Road Conditions in vermont caused this rollover on i89, and ice in michigan, thick enough to cover this car window. And its not just snow and ice, overnight, this storm causing possible tornadoes in arkansas. Causing this 18wheeler to overturn in memphis. And flooding entire neighborhoods. And this storm is not over yet, that ice, snow and rain now moving east, and here in the midwest, temperatures are expected to plunge tonight. Dan . Something to look forward to, alex. Around washington, d. C. , that until 10 00 a. M. As we look later into the afternoon here, by noon, a few snow showers around the chicago. Snow ongoing in milwaukee. Were going to see a few showers around philadelphia into new york city, this afternoon, but early tomorrow morning, if you are traveling around 8 00 a. M. , right down i95 from boston, down to the nations capital, it looks like another round of rain is in the forecast. Also snow, from milwaukee to green bay, 1 to 2 inches, up to 4 inches of snow there. Who will have a White Christmas . Right now, 42 of the United States covered in snow. President obama is warning that violence in south sudan could cost the worlds newest country in africa the support of United States. Saturday, four u. S. Troops were injured after gunfire hit aircraft. The escalating violence in the area is causing tens of thousands of south sudanese to seek shelter inside a u. N. Mission compound. Happening right now in kentucky, s. W. A. T. Teams have entered the house of a decorated military veteran. Whos been barricaded inside possibly with a weapon since saturday evening. Police say theyre in communication with the man. Earlier, they said there are other people in the house and theyre concerned about their safety. Our local affiliate which is at the scene said gunfire was heard coming from the house. So far no word of any injuries. And more fallout this morning from that massive credit card Security Breach at target, chase bank is putting temporary restrictions on its debit cards used at the popular retailer. Chase card holders can only withdraw 100 and limit their debit purchases to 300. The restrictions will be lifted once replacement cards are issued. And in colorado, claire davis, the teenager shot inside of arapahoe high school, has died. She was shot in the head at pointblank range by her fellow classmate karl pierson, police say that she was not piersons intended target. She was just 17 years of age. Edgar bronfman has died, he was the longtime president of the World Jewish Congress and champion for jewish rights around the world. In 1999 bronfman was award the president ial medal of freedom. Bronfman was 84 years of age. And finally, a gift of flowers from pope francis or rather for pope francis, the pontiff visiting a Childrens Hospital in rome on saturday. During the threehour visit, the pope thanked the children for sharing their christmas dreams and wishes with him. No gifts for them yet. Its not christmas yet. That was gift enough. To space now, and the wardrobe malfunction thats jeopardizing the mission to make crucial repairs to the International Space station, yesterdays spacewalk went well but tomorrows been postponed because of space suit problems. It turns out, theyre decades olds. Abcs Mike Boettcher is in houston right now. Reporter there was a problem saturday. Yet another issue with the 35yearold space suits used by the astronauts that were designed during the era of the space shuttle. American astronauts Rick Mastracchio and Michael Hopkins raced through time and space. Removing ahead of schedule a broken cooling pipe that jeopardized operations aboard the International Space station. But there was a glitch. Astronaut mastracchio, the senior of the two space walkers, complained about freezing feet and at times had to readjust temperature controls within the suit. When Mission Control asked him to extend the spacewalk, he balked. My vote would be to call it for today, but its up to you guys if you really want to go out there. Reporter one of mastracchios problems was revealed by Mission Control a few hours after the walk ended, water in his space suit. We want to dry that suit out overnight. Reporter theyll spend Christmas Eve trying to finish the work. After they canceled the latest spacewalk. Its different from an emergency encountered last july by an Italian Space walker. When he almost drowned, when a glob of water collected in his helmet. Its working the aging space suits. The suits are 35 years old. We review the hazards. Well turn now to the latest on the arrest of four men. In the vicious killing of a young lawyer gunned down in front of his wife in a parking lot of an upscale Shopping Mall. This morning, police are now saying the accused coldblooded killers wanted the mans luxury suv, so, is this part of a frightening new trend . Abcs reena ninan is here with more. Reporter they credit good oldfashioned police work, technology to help crack the case. The suspects picked up just five days from the horrible attack. This morning, police say that these four men arrested late friday night for their alleged role of the tragic Shopping Mall carjacking. We believe that the individuals immediately involved in this incident have been charged and now taken into custody. Reporter saturday, Police Revealed new details of the night friedland was murdered. They say the four suspects arrived in a chevy suburban suv. They allegedly discovered dustin and his wife leaving the mall. Thats when investigators terrell abc news thats when the carjackers struck. Jamie watching as her husband was fatally shot. The crime itself seems to be motivated by the desire for that particular vehicle. Reporter theyre targeting luxury vehicles, like their suv. Carjackings, with so many cases its been a focus of the fbis new Jersey Office for three years. There is a black market for stolen vehicles. Reporter Law Enforcement sources say some stolen vehicles are quickly moved to africa as part of an international ring. Its not clear if thats the case here. Investigators are looking into whether this incident is linked to others in the region. In a statement overnight, his widow expressed her thanks to police. We are very grateful to the Essex County Police and all of the local authorities for pursuing this so vigorously. The men could potentially face the death penalty. 90 of cars from carjackings are usually recovered. As was this one. What a terrible case. Reena, thank you. This morning, the woman at the center of a digital uproar, of all people, Justine Sacco, should have known better. Shes a pr hot shot of sort. But friday, before boarding a flight to south africa, she sent out an incredibly offensive tweet about aids and race. By the time she landed yesterday, that tweet had gone global and she had been fired. Abcs gio benitez is on the story. Reporter good morning. Up to a few days ago, she was representing big websites. Like match. Com and the daily beast. Now, shes unemployed. So many watching her demise online, while she offline was on a plane. This morning, Justine Sacco is without a job, fired after sparking an international controversy. Her peril began when she tweeted this. It started with going to africa. Hope i dont get aids. Just kidding. Im white. Her former employee, iac, quickly issued a statement calling the comment outrageous and offensive. After firing sacco on saturday, said it again condemned the tweet. Shes an individual who we have otherwise known to be a decent person at core. Sacco, apparently oblivious of the rising backlash without wifi from london to cape town, south africa friday. Her whole time her twitter account exploding. Her reputation imploding. The hasjustinelandedyet, anxiously waiting the moment sacco would get online. This is one of the fastest responses in crash and burns that i have seen from a tweet. Reporter this photo posted to twitter, showing sacco after she landed in cape town, moments later, the offending tweet was deleted, then her entire tweet, but still no apology. The pr person has two jobs, one is to present things to the public, but the other is to read the mood of public and to be sensitive to that and this was shockingly insensitive. Reporter her family tells abc news this is not indicative of the type of person she is. But now on her nowdeleted account, she described herself, known for her loud laugh. Sacco is expected to make a statement very soon. She hasnt said a thing publicly since sending out that tweet, dan and bianna, clearly a lot of people want to hear from her. She allegedly had some questionable tweets in the past, as well. Gio, our thanks to her. Were going to turn to president obama whos enjoying the sun, sand and surf of hawaii on his annual winter vacation with his family there. Before leaving the white house, the president was really grilled by reporters about his fifth year in office, which he insisted wasnt the worst of his presidency. Lets bring in the host of this week, george stephanopoulos. So, was it the worst year of his presidency and what does he do to make 2014 less horrible . I think its safe to say it was the worst year of his presidency. But also a tough year for everybody in washington, they had the least Productive Congress in memory. The president has to do a few things to start to turn this around. Number one, get back to basics. Fix the health care website. Make sure people are signing up. Big deadline coming up tomorrow for people who want to have theieir Health Insurance by january 1st. Number two, some good news, the economy has been getting stronger. They want to avoid government shutdowns to harm the economy. On top of that, they have to try to find some way to work with congress and at least one of his bigticket items that was stalled, immigration. And now to the incredible story of an nfl cheerleader who went from the football field to the battlefield as part of a special ops combat unit in afghanistan. The team she cheered before her service, Philadelphia Eagles will honor her service. Abcs linzie janis is here with her story. Reporter this amazing young woman was leading a platoon of 22 in afghanistan just weeks ago, and in an exclusive interview she tells why she decided to ditch her pom poms for an Assault Rifle and pistol. Just back from a second tour in afghanistan, 25yearold lieutenant Rachel Washburn will be named Hometown Hero in a ceremony during tonights Philadelphia Eagles game. In 2009, washburn gave up her career as a cheerleader for the team to become an officer in the u. S. Army. I was always going to join the military. Theyre not exactly the same. But both jobs require you to handle stress. Reporter while in college, she juggled both identities. Training as an officer and winning a spot on the eagles Cheerleading Squad her sophomore year. And when she came back, she didnt miss a beat. She knew all of the dances. She was just doing everything. Reporter but after graduation, her love of country won out. Washburn deployed to afghanistan in 2011 as part of a cultural support team, her Mission Winning the hearts and minds of women in afghanistan. Trying to create a bond with them was always our main objective. We talked a lot about head scarves and makeup. Reporter washburn and another female officer were attached to a special forces unit. And despite these stunning photos of her time there, she fought in a remote and dangerous mountain area, where two other female officers died. Their sacrifice just means so much to me and to other women. Reporter washburn says that shes following in her dads footsteps, a retired air force fighter pilot. I know enough about the army to know that what she was doing was not safe. You dont want your own kid to go. Reporter washburn has a year left on her current military contract. But shes planning on doing three more years after that. Perhaps law school after that and a career as a human rights lawyer. She is awesome. What an inspiration. She has a boyfriend, dan. Just so you know. I know that youre married. Thats not dangerous, given that im married. Not to worry, honey. Not to worry. But she is her boyfriend happens to be a First Lieutenant as well. Shes remarkable. Thanks, linzie. Now to a moment of honesty followed by a moment of greed, and it was all captured on surveillance cameras. It involves a waitress who found 1,000 bucks and tried to return it. Samantha a waitress at the crab house, realized one of her customers forgot something in his seat. I just saw a wad of hundreds. I didnt count it. I was in a rush to catch the guy. Reporter security cameras were rolling as knight caught up to this man and handed him the misplaced 1,000. I was like you left in the booth. He was like, thanks. Reporter one small problem, this is not the man who lost the money. Seaworld is fighting back against the charges in the documentary, the company took out a fullpage ad in several major newspapers and addressed what it calls dishonesty and misinformation about the seaworld. Seaworld is lashing back. At this documentary and its charges of animal mistreatment. The company took out a fullpage ad in eight major newspapers friday. To, quote, set the record straight. The movie black fish chronicles the story of tilikum, a killer whale associated with three deaths during 30 years in captivity, including the death of dawn brancheau. This video taken at the seaworld shows the whale playing with the trainer just before dragging the trainer into the water. In an open letter, seaworld says we do not capture killer whales in the wild. Seaworld also said that tilikum did not attack her, that all evidence indicates that tilikum became interested in her ponytail. Grabbed it and pulled her into the water. I dont think this is the last we heard of this. This documentary seems to have gained more momentum, not less momentum. Reporter the theme park chain also responded to the documentarys heartwrenching video of whale hunts. Showing young whales being separated from their mothers. Seaworlds ad says that we do not separate killer whale moms and calves. It came after eight musical acts canceled upcoming performances at the orlando theme park. What this celebrity situation does, it makes it a bigger story and thats exactly what they dont want. Reporter abc news reached out to seaworld, officials said in a statement, we felt the time had come to address the many falsehood of our long history of Marine Mammal display. And in the uk Scotland Yard said theyre reviewing evidence after celebrity chef Nigella Lawson admitted uses drugs, she said that she used cocaine with her late husband when he found out that he had terminal cancer. She made the revelation during the fraud trial during her two former assistants. And a wild brawl at a womens olympic exhibition hockey game between the u. S. And canada, with eight seconds left in that match, tempers flared and fists started flying. Six players from each team were hit with penalties.
