the whole system clears out of town by early tomorrow evening. we'll have more on the timing and impact coming your way in a few minutes, maureen? >> thank you doug. president obama's state of the union address tonight is expected to focus on economic proposals meant to help the middle class but the president is already facing resistance from the republican controlled congress. mike conneen joins us live from capitol hill where just minutes ago, police began shutting down roads around the capitol. mike? >> maureen, those road closures are in effect. we're seeing a heavy police presence across capitol hill. access limited to only those with credentials for tonight's event. the speech scheduled to start at 9:00 p.m. the president's sixth time for delivering the state of the union address. but the first time he'll stand before the republican majority in the house and senate. >> the president of the united states. >> despite a republican-controlled congress, president obama will push ahead with his agenda. hoping to capitalize on better approval ratings and economic momentum with lower gas prices and an unemployment rate below 6%. >> economy is growing, things are looking much better than they did two or three or four years ago. >> i think it's a little bit shock right now. but, you know, maybe it's on the upside. >> perhaps setting the stage for the debate in 2016 the president will unveil tackling income inequality with white house videos already promoting free community college for some students, paid sick leave for workers and tax cuts to the middle class. to be paid for with tax increases on the 1%. >> the 1% has so much and there's a lot of people who are still in poverty and homeless. >> but americans visiting from across the country want to hear the president discuss a wide range of issues tonight. >> domestic economy. how it actually is. the numbers. >> we're really slipping on education. >> terrorism is a big problem. >> love to hear him talk about immigration. >> big deal is the environment. >> in foreign policy, president obama is expected to provide an update on the fight of so-called militants and urge them not to enact new sanctions on call on congress to lift the 50-year-old embargo on cuba. one of the first guests tonight will be the 65-year-old government contractor from montgomery county who was just released last month from a cuban prison. he supports the president's new policy on cuba but the republicans have their own guest tonight. republican house speaker john boehner and senator marco rubio of florida are bringing along cuban activist who's oppose lifting the embargo. reporting live on capitol hill mike conneen, abc 7 news. >> thank you mike. freshman senator joni ernst of iowa will deliver the republican response to the state of the union address. last november senator ernst won that seat controlled for years by the democrats. we will have full analysis of the state of the union address and the republican response tonight with senior political reporter scott thuman tonight on abc 7 news at 11:00. developing news out of annapolis tonight. crews are using heavy equipment in their search for a missing annapolis couple and their four grandchildren after a massive fire. i.t. executive don pyle and his wife sandy and four young grandchildren are unaccounted for after a fire destroyed the pyles' mansion along the annapolis waterfront yesterday. fire marshalls say the search of the 16,000 square foot home could take days. >> the standard house of 2500 square feet so you're looking at five standard houses put together. there are a lot of businesses that aren't 16,000 square feettors say it's too early to determine a cause of the fire or to know why no one in the house made a 911 call. in the meantime family and friends are paying their respects. metro officials are in the hot seat speaking for the first time since last week's deadly incident on a yellow line train. the agency leaders met with the d.c. council this morning to face criticism for metro's response to smoke filling a train and tunnel at l'enfant plaza station. one woman died and more than 80 others got sick from breathing smoke and fumes. metro's board of directors chairman tom downs said fans and the ventilation system in the tunnel were working properly at the time of the incident but he would not elaborate because of the ntsb's ongoing investigation. two murders in as many weeks and now a neighborhood is on edge. residents of d.c.'s ward eight in southeast, though are ready to fight back. "7 on your side"'s jennifer donaldon is live in that area tonight to tell us about it. >> well maureen, after yet another young man was killed here in southeast just yesterday, community organizers are vowing that this upcoming community meeting will be different. just hours ago, we met with this man's grieving family and his mother. >> i won't see my son ever again. they're picking up these guns and they're not thinking. >> yesterday at 2:00 in the son 22-year-old kevin owens was gunned down in the congress heights neighborhood in southeast. >> always had a loving smile on his face. always! >> she says she hoped his 3-month-old daughter lamore has that same style, too one day. >> she's not going to know her father. >> owens' murder was the second in one week's time in this eight ward. 17-year-old phillip jones was shot and killed at a bus stop in southeast last wednesday after a high school basketball game. >> the more things change the more they remain the same. >> phillip pinell executive director of the anacostia coordinating council remembers 1991 when they filled a casket up with the names of ward eight murder victims and marched in the streets. the list went on and on. fast forward to now and he's calling for another large scale community meeting on thursday. >> not going to sit back in 2015 as our neighborhoods basically become rivers of blood. >> the police chief said murders and shootings in the area are down. >> the shooting that happened late yesterday afternoon was just kind of a stark reality that we still have a lot of work to do. >> what is getting done? you keep talking. put some of this in action. our children if they make it to 18. they're happy. >> even though we can't go out there and literally take guns out of the hands of any potential murderer, we at least are going to make that type of outcry to say this is a community that deserves better. >> as for the owens' murder the police chief told our cameras that she expected an arrest in that case today. let's get to the large scale community meeting that residents here are vowing will be sustained change. it is thursday night from 6:30 until 8:30 in 3100 martin luther department of transportation reports the overpass in cincinnati was being demolished when it collapsed late monday night killing one person. a tractor-trailer driver suffered minor injuries. lanes of i-75 are still closed at this hour. metro transit police are looking for two people tonight after a shooting on a metro bus. we took you to the scene live last night on abc news at 11:00. a man went through the back door and fired a gun into the bus. two people were hit but their injuries are not life threatening. and right now, police are looking for two persons of interest. these are pictures 6:00 continues. >> heroin deaths in our area especially in virginia are spiralling out of control. in fact, between 2011 and 2013, overdose deaths jumped 164% in northern virginia alone. northern virginia bureau chief jeff goldberg reports there's a new push to curb those numbers. >> my son had all of life's blessing. >> don flattery says there's a very clear reason why he talks about the death of his son kevin. a native of alexandria and graduate of gonzaga child high school and u.v.a. who died last september of a prescription overdose. >> critically important to personalize these prescription drug and heroin addiction. >> we're all fighting a losing battle. >> this attorney general is proposing several different bills on the issue including one that encourages reporting overdoses and progress penalties against drug dealers and expanding use of a prescription drug that counteracts doses. >> the goal of these bills is to save lives. >> between 2011 and 2013 heroin
