On the death of freddie gray and their calls for justice. Their protests are peaceful. Everything weve seen today, peaceful. But everyone knows violence is really just simmering. This is what Governor Hogan has to say. We dont know that things are over with. Theres still some raw emotions out there. Still some frustrations and were going to make sure that we can continue to maintain the peace in the city so weve more nights like last night and no more nights like monday night. Brad back live now here. You can see the Baltimore CityPolice Officers are standing vigil here along north avenue but they are no longer in that riot gear. A Police Source told me that what theyve tried to do now is deescalate, put away that riot gear, reduce the number of officers on the streets so people can start to feel as though life is a little more normal although under a state of emergency with a 10 00 curfew. And if officers are needed they can be called back in a matter of seconds. Leon, a lot better than when you and i were here together last night. Back to you. Alison all right. Brad, thank you very much for that. As we mentioned, the Baltimore Orioles are making history. But not in the way they imagined. Right now they are playing the first game in Major League History in front of no fans. As we first told you yesterday, the orioles announced this game would be closed to the public. And Horace Holmes is live at camden yards right now. So horace are there people outside the park tonight since they cant go in . Horace absolutely alison. Theyre just around the corner from us. Were here on ewtah street. Even though the fans are locked out of this game they feel this is the first sign that normalcy is returning to the city baseball coming back even being played in camden yards. But a strange feeling on the inside. I was here for batting practice and had been watching some of the games and ive been working to put these pieces together for the afternoon. And its very strange, theres not a soul in the stands. Theres a lot of press up in the press box. Everybody is watching the game. Up in the press box. But there are no fans in the stands and you can hear every single thing that goes on on the field. First time as you said alison this has ever happened in the history of major league baseball. But major league baseball, the orioles thought this was the best thing to do. In essence, so the orioles have lost a weeks worth of games. They have a weekend schedule that they were supposed to be here playing tampa bay. Those games have been moved to tampa and the businesses around here have gotten a big hit because 40,000 people come here every single night and those big crowds are not here to you know go to the bars and restaurants that are right around the stadium. But they say thats a small price to pay for peace on the streets. They just are very happy that baseball is being played and they know that baseball is going to be coming back that they can actually go into the stadium and see. Coming up tonight at 5 00 well talk to some of the fans that are outside of the gates. And well also talk to some Business Owners. Reporting live outside of camden yards, Horace Holmes abc 7 news. Alison see you then horace meanwhile, baltimores mayor is clarifying comments she made during mondays rioters that she called rioters thugs when comparing them to the peaceful protests. The difference between those protests and the thugs who only want to incite violence and destroy our city. Alison earlier today, the mayor sent a couple of tweets saying that she wanted to clarify those comments on thugs. First tweet said when you speak out of frustration and anger, one can say things in a way you dont mean. The mayor went on to tweet. That night we saw misguided young people who need to be held accountable but who also need support. And my comments then did not convey that. Leon democratic president ial kanld date Hillary Clinton is weighing in on the crisis in baltimore. Its a need to restore security and find ways to reform the criminal justice system. She called for body cameras for every Police Officer in the u. S. Not every problem can be or will be prevented by cameras but this is a commonsense step we should take. Leon clinton made those comments during a speech at Columbia University today. Were learning more about the plan by d. C. Police to expand its body camera program. The department launched a six Month Pilot Program back in october and now, d. C. Police chief kathy lanier says that mayor Muriel Bowser has included more than 5 million in her budget for a full Scale Program to outfit all officers with body cameras. Stay with us here on abc 7 and wjla. Com as we follow the crisis in baltimore. Well bring you any updates as we get them right here. Alison . Now, we understand that a woman is believed to have pulled out a knife, stabbed a man three times in the chest. Inflicting very serious injury. He collapsed. She got on to a bus that pulled up. They believe that will give them the evidence they need to try to discern what exactly went down here. As far as the man that was stabbed, he was rushed to the hospital. His injuries have been deemed life threatening. Reporting live, Stephen Tschida, abc 7 news. Alison all right, stephen. Thank you. Lets turn to a pleasant topic today and that is the weather. Just another Beautiful Day outside. Leon thats right. Great day to be outside and just swimming in the pollen. Ahhh, just love that alison bringing us down. Leon no. Glass half full who knows . But weve got some changes in the forecast to talk about. Chief meteorologist doug hill here now to explain that for us. Hey, man. Doug hey there. If youre outside this afternoon and this evening and you have sneezing issues you see any oak trees, shake your fist at the oak tree. Thats the prime offender in the pollen count being so high. Outside of the belfort furniture Weather Center gorgeous as you say. Sunshine give you look at the rooftop here. A few clouds and well hang on to partly cloudy skies this evening. Mild temperatures. More clouds move in tonight ahead of the next system thats going to come our way and that system will eventually bring some rain to the area for the day tomorrow. Capitol a couple of weeks ago was the focus of a hearing on the hill today. Lawmakers looking for some answers into just how that pilot made it all the way to the capitol grounds. Alison our senior political reporter scott thuman is live in the newsroom with more. Scott . Scott what we saw today was the top leaders tasked with protecting washington, d. C. And theyre trying to force to admit that our Defense System failed on a lot of levels. While doug hughes was flying through 30 miles of protected airspace, he didnt show up as a threat on radar due to the size of that gyrocopter. Only showed up intermittently and then sometimes that dot that they would see on the radar screen could also be confused with anything from a kite to a balloon. So big problems there. It was also debated whether or not in a Committee Hearing today, whether or not authorities would have been able to shoot down hughes who was angry about Campaign Finance reform if he had explosives on board, not just petitions. Youve got a dude in a gyrocopter 100 feet in the air crossing 30 plus miles of restricted airspace. Whose job is it to detect him and whose job is it to take him down . Sir, as the commander at norad, thats my responsibility and im accountable for that. Why didnt that happen . Were working against physics. Did you not or did you have guns trained . As he landed. Scott why was the senate warned of the potential threat but not the house . Were going to tell you why coming up tonight at 6 00. Leon . Leon well have to wait a bit longer to learn who is going to be leading ward eight in the district. Last nights election was too close to call. Sam ford explains how many votes now separate the top two candidates. Sam outside the Campaign Headquarters today lay hundreds of yard signs never used. What she hoped would be a Victory Party last night with her chief supporter mayor Muriel Bowser did not work out that way. You never know what the voters are going to do or how its going to turn out. What im proud of is shes winning this race. Sam bowsers other candidate did win handily in ward four special election for her old seat. For the seat of the late marion barry in ward eight, the former School Board Rep gave may a run for her money. In fact, she had 18 times as much money as he had. 270,000 to whites 15,000. The numbers show him only 152 votes behind her and there are 1,200 uncounted absentee or provisional ballots. Make sure theres no potential for fraud in this case. A lot of millionaires have stake in this race for the mayor and ruby may. We want to make sure theres no trickery against the people. I believe theres going to be a fair and transparent process and im a student. And so if you give me an opportunity to learn what the process is, i will study it. Sam the board of elections has invited in the white and may campaigns tomorrow to discuss how these provisional ballots will be processed. A spokeswoman for the ward says its unlikely a winner will be declared before friday of next week. Incidentally, christopher barry, Marion Barrys son placed sixth in the election with 460 votes.
