reporting live stephen tschida abc 7 news. alison: ok. thank you for that. now, also, the associated press just released this video right here of the moment that gyrocopter landed on the west capitol lawn. a tourist captured the video as the pilot flew over a group of kids and then came to rest right there on the lawn. so we're also hearing from witnesses near the u.s. capitol at the time of this incident. d.c. bureau chief sam ford continues our team coverage from near the capitol. sam? sam: well, alison, what is amazing is how normal things are. after 2 1/2 hours ago, everybody was going crazy around here with the thing flying in but now on the tourist buses, people are posing for pictures in front of the capitol. but it was about 1:30 this afternoon when everybody's eyes swung towards the sky. >> this is not good people! no, it's not! sam: workers, tourists anybody outside of the west front of the capitol section of the mall had their attention captured first by the sound of a helicopter and as quickly by the sight of the bicycle with a blade on top as some described the gyrocopter as it came in for a landing. given the times the number of people fear that it was some kind of terrorist incident. capitol police told people to run, to get out of the way. groups of visitors like some college students from west virginia recounted what they saw. >> came flying over the pond over there and lands right and bounces down on the ground and there's like a box on the back of it. but he landed right there and he said get back. get back go and started running. sam: police cordoned off the area and sent in robots to check out the copter and it was not a threat. police remember what happened in october of 2013 when this woman named marion terry that came here driving fast with a child in the car ultimately was killed by the capitol police and now a big scene here at the capitol again basically in the same area where much of that happened almost a year and a half ago. reporting live from the u.s. capitol, sam ford, abc 7 news. anchor: thanks so much for that. abc 7 is gathering more details about the pilot of this gyrocopter. stay with us for the latest developments in this investigation. and look for updates on our website, wjla.com. alison: we are also following breaking news that's affecting the green line in prince george's county. firefighters say a piece of construction equipment hit a pedestrian bridge. news chopper 7 was over the scene on berwyn road in berwyn heights. no one was hurt but pieces from that bridge fell right on to the metro and marc tracks between greenbelt and college park metro stations. at this time rail service is temporarily suspended between green belt and college park. you can see some significant damage there. buses will arrive at metro stations soon to pick up the passengers. we have a crew on the way to the scene. we'll have an update as soon as they arrive. well, just within the last hour the gaithersburg man convicted of sexually assaulting several men was sentenced to 150 years in prison this afternoon. anchor: maryland bureau chief brad bell is live with the details. brad? brad: well dramatic time in court today as the judge read out the sentence adding 20 years to 20 years to 10 years to 20 years for each of the counts until he got to 150 year sentence. for now 40-year-old joey poindexter and we can show you some video of mr. poindexter. his mug shot and surveillance video of him leading a young man out of a college park bar back in 2013. you can see the young man clearly intoxicated. prosecutors proved in court that that was poindexter's m.o. he would go to beer pong tournaments, play beer pong with college aged men and get them drunk. in all likelihood drugged, and then bring them back to his gaithersburg home. where he would keep them drunk or drugged while he committed horrible sexual assaulting on his victims. this is what the state's attorney john mccarthy had to say after the sentence came down. >> an individual who i think clearly is a vial evil, depraved predator who coldly and premeditatedly for years preyed upon incapacitated and i do agree with the judge drugged individuals and served as their sexual predator. brad: we're still working on this story. when we come back at 5:00 we'll tell you why poindexter's lawyer in court today says that she plans to appeal his convictions. circuit court in rockville, brad bell, abc 7 news. anchor: thank you for that. former nfl star aaron hernandez will spend the rest of his life in prison. today, a jury convicting him of first degree murder in the shooting death of odin lloyd. abc's margie gonzalez has reaction to the verdict and sentencing. margie: after the verdict was read -- >> guilty of murder in the first degree. margie: former new england patriots star aaron hernandez glared at the jury who found him guilty of all counts in odin lloyd's murder appearing to mouth the words "you're wrong." his fiancee and mother embracing in tears. his victim's family breaking down. >> the people that had a hand in my son's murder. margie: lloyd was shot to death execution style near two years ago in a massachusetts industrial park. he was hernandez's friend dating his fiancee's sister but prosecutors offered no motives and the murder weapon was never found. yet, the jury says the mountain of evidence including video of hernandez with what appeared to be a gun was enough to convince them that he plotted the murder and pulled the trigger. >> didn't need the murder weapon. margie: less than two miles from gillette stadium where the 25-year-old had a promising career and a $40 million nfl contract hernandez will spend the rest of his life in this prison without the possibility of parole. >> aaron hernandez may have been a well known new england patriots player. in the end, the jurors found he was just a man who committed a brutal murder. margie: the defense will appeal the conviction. meanwhile, hernandez still faces a separate trial for a 2012 double murder in boston. marcy gonzalez, abc news, new york. alison: speaking of boston today marks the two-year anniversary of the boston marathon bombing. that city unveiled commemorative banners today at the finish line where the bombs went off killing three people wounding more than 260 others. dzhokhar tsarnaev was recently found guilty for his involvement in the 2013 attacks and will be sentenced next week. anchor: we are hearing from the teenager arrested and charged with vandalizing a jewish synagogue in gaithersburg. sebastian espinoza-carranza is out on bond right now. montgomery county reporter kevin lewis is live to share his candid interview with the 18-year-old. kevin? kevin: hi there, larry. this young man spoke to us in hopes of clearing his name. he admits to vandalizing the shaare torah synagogue congregation but admits this is only meant to be a silly teenage prank. according to sebastian espinoza-carranza, he and three other teens were hanging out in the kentlands last monday evening when they devised a plan to deface the synagogue. they purchased white spray paint, and grabbed halloween masks and at 2:00 a.m. they desecrated the temple. they had acronym k.k.k. and other hate language. he says he's not racist or prejudice and in fact has a number of jewish friends and considers this to be a foolish teenage mistake but not an intentional hate crime. >> i want to go and apologize to the jewish community. it was a really stupid prank and he wasn't really really bad error there that i did. it's hard for me you know i'm really disappointed and sorry for what happened. reporter: as for the three other teens, it's very likely they, too, will face charges. i asked sebastian why he and his friends singled out this synagogue. that's all new at a:00. i'm kevin lewis, abc 7 news. anchor: look forward to that. thanks, kevin. turning to the weather now and looking live outside, much better weather compared to the rain and the overcast skies we had yesterday. alison: absolutely. not too bad today! but you will want to keep the umbrellas handy. chief meteorologist doug hill has a first look at the forecast. hi, doug. doug: hello there. it's looking a lot brighter. we've been struggling with the cloud cover all day. every now and then a little bit of sunshine through the clouds and that's the story right now outside of the belfort furniture weather center. let's give you a look at the rooftop camera. a lot of clouds showing up. cloud cover things out a bit, enough that even with northerly winds, we're up to 68 degrees at reagan national airport. 64 degrees at manassas. gaithersburg at 63 and 65 degrees in fredricksburg. through the evening, keep it mostly cloudy and a little bit of sunshine at times. cold and in the 60's. as we head to the late night hours, partly cloudy and cooler. there is some rain in the weekend forecast. have the timing of that for you in just a couple of minutes. back to you. alison: ok. it's pretty exciting. ready to rock the red tonight. anchor: a lot of the stanley cup playoffs between the caps and the islanders. robert burton is joining us live from the verizon center with what's at stake tonight. robert: hey larry. everybody remembers we weren't exactly here covering the caps in the playoffs. that's because they weren't here. not like a big letdown when you make the playoffs consistently but don't make it one year. however, it's a new season and new post season at that and the caps tell us they're ready to rock. the capitals are excited for tonight although they say moderation is the key. >> it's exciting at the same time it's the biggest challenge to keep those emotions in check to make sure you find your place and mentality that makes you more successful. robert: after spending last spring on the outside looking in, there's nothing like being back in the stanley cup playoffs. some april madness that the caps hopes takes them deep into may and beyond. >> you're not in for a year and see guys playing, it's frustrating. you realize how much fun it is so when you get a chance to be back in kind of enjoy every moment. and i think when you enjoy things, just have more fun with it. tends to go better for you. so i'm hoping that's going to happen this year. and, you know it's very positive. very confident. so see how it turns out. robert: you can see around me a lot of empty blue seats but i can tell you come 7:00 when the puck drops, will definitely be a sea of red out here. for now, live at the phone booth, robert burton, abc 7 news. back to you guys. alison: ok thank you. coming up here on abc 7 news at 4:00 the dramatic video that's raising some new questions about the type of police force used to detain armed suspects. >> jesus christ! man down! larry: ahead at 4:00 why police say the officers intentionally rammed into the man probably saved his life. alison: concern for pet owners nationwide as a dog flu outbreak spreads to the chicago area. debate over the use of police force in certain situations. now, the video shows the police officer intentionally hitting a suspect with his car. diane cho is at our live desk with more on this. diane, everybody is talking about this. diane: we have to warn you that the video is graphic in nature recorded from an officer's dash camera in his patrol car and what you see is the first officer following a suspect slowly and then moments later, another officer intentionally uses his car to run into the suspect throwing him into the air before he slammed into a retaining wall. police say this was the end of a crime spree, the 36-year-old went on earlier that day. authorities say he robbed a convenience store, set a church on fire and then entered a home and stole a car before they say he went into a wal-mart and stole a rifle and ammunition. at one point in the video, you see him pointing the rifle at himself. police say he fired a shot into the air. they say he also pointed the rifle at an officer and then walked away before the officer hit him with his patrol car. >> set back and second guess, waited another five seconds, 10 seconds, another 14 seconds. that remains. the officer has a very difficult, tough decision to make and he made that tough decision. and if he doesn't make that decision, we don't know that if he lets him go for another 10 seconds, he's going to take something out in the parking lot and then we're answering some completely different questions. why didn't you act sooner? diane: he survived the impact and his attorney said based on what was seen in that video, it was a case of excessive use of force. the officer was placed on routine administrative leave but is now back on duty after the prosecutor's office cleared him of any wrongdoing. diane cho, abc 7 news. larry: "7 on your side" with the consumer alert. beechnut nutrition is recalling baby food after a consumer found a small piece of glass in one of the products. the recall impacts four every day. every now and then, you know. larry: i like that. the answer, not really. there you go. alison: he had time to think about it. larry: maybe a couple of minutes. alison: not a bad first weather week for you. larry: that's right. thanks, doug. we've been talking about breaking news we've been covering for quite a bit here. alison: that's right. let's get back to our roz slater live at the scene of the pedestrian bridge accident we told you about in berwyn heights, maryland. roz, bring us up to date. roz: it is a pretty amazing sight. i'll get out of the way so you can take a look and see. that's what we're talking about right there. here's what we're told happened. they're building some new trusses and the contractor was moving some equipment down past down this track when for some reason, that crane they were transporting the boom portion of it was up and not retracted so that struck that portion of the pedestrian bridge which came tumbling down and crashing down on to part of the metro track part of the marc train track as we are just learning. fortunately, no one was injured in all of this. but as you can see the potential for injury is there. all of that of course now right at this -- at this portion of the time is having an impact on the rush hour traffic. a temporary inconvenience for marc passengers as well as for metro passengers. but we're told for now is that this will be probably several hours to come. impact mostly the greenbelt train. passengers will come to the college park on the green line. there will be buses waiting to take them to their destination. but again, a significant interruption of traffic here of the train traffic here as people are start to go go home for the day. people are coming out to the neighborhood to watch. many of them stand on the pedestrian bridge to watch the train go by. it's so damaged at this point in time it's come crashing down on to the tracks and interrupting rush hour as we know it. for now, we have to keep you posted on the latest for -- in terms of the train traffic. but for now, back to you. alison: ok. thank you very much, roz. larry: thanks so much for that. still ahead at 4:00 "7 on concerned about a recent outbreak of dog flu in the chicago area. alison: so more than 1,000 dogs have been infected. some are worried, some people are worried now that it could spread to our area, too. so there are steps that dog owners can take to protect their animals. so we're happy today to welcome our abc 7 veterinarian dr. katie nelson. she's here now. hi, good to see you. so what can pet owners do right now to protect their pets from this? >> the unfortunate thing is that our current vaccine is not going to be 100% protective as far as we know. initially, we thought this was an eight strain of flu and now we think it's an h3n2 strain of flu that has been affecting thousands of animals in south korea and chinese -- and in china and so we think this is a recent introduction to the united states possibly back in january. not exactly sure where it came from. but the good news is that our vaccine, our influenza vaccine may impart enough immunity for these pets to be able to fight it off. it's sort of like us getting the flu vaccine. it may not cover all of the strains but better for us to have it because it encourages our immune system to build up against these viruses. so you know we're a very mobile society. and especially in this area, we have people coming in all over the place traveling with their pets. so the best thing that you can do is if you're planning to travel to chicago, number one leave your pets at home. if you do have to go to the chicago area make sure that you avoid any -- any areas that are like dog parks, grooming salons veterinarians unless you have to go for some sort of a reason. and if your pet does start to show these signs that, unfortunately, are very similar to allergy symptoms in pets right now which we all know are everywhere but runny nose coughing malaise, these are things that you definitely want to have your pets seen by your veterinarian because it could be allergies or could be the flu and either way you need to know. larry: interesting. alison: thank you! good to have you here. thanks for that information. hopefully we won't need to bring you back with more on this. >> i hope so. larry: take my dog and put the scarf around him and the coat. it all works. >> that's right. got to do what we can. larry: thanks so much. >> thank you. larry: good to see you. still ahead at 4:00 continuing coverage of breaking continue to follow that breaking news from the ground of the u.s. capitol today. one man arrested after landing a gyrocopter right on the west lawn. larry: our scott thuman is live near the capitol with an update now. scott? scott: larry alison a bizarre scene that we have not witnessed before at the u.s. capitol. show you the flight path this man took. according to eyewitnesses he was over on that side by the national mall very, very low. some say 20 feet or so when he came across third street there over the reflecting pool made his way past a group of tourists who were standing there taking photos just above them and then landed right in the middle of the lawn on the west side of the u.s. capitol. now, take a look at the video from earlier today provided to us from a man who was down here from montgomery county. he saw the commotion and ran over and took these images of the pilot, doug hughes being pulled from the gyrocopter, that single blade aircraft immediately upon landing, u.s. capitol police swarmed him, and got him out of there. searched him and handcuffed him so make sure he didn't have any nefarious plot under way. this is apparently some sort of demonstration by him. he was upset with campaign finance corruption as he called it and was going to deliver 535 letters to members of congress. what threw a lot of people off down here and the feeling of concern and confusion is because on that gyrocopter it had a u.s. postal service logo. a lot of people didn't know what to make of it especially because he did come in so low and landed right there. he was taken without incident. he didn't put up any struggle. they handcuffed him and brought him off and you can see on the lawn behind me here cleared this scene, removed that aircraft and all the streets are back open. but just quite a moment down here this afternoon outside the u.s. capitol. reporting live i'm scott thuman, back to you. larry: coming up at 5:00 what the pilot told a tampa newspaper before he allegedly brought the gyrocopter to the capitol. the video and his explanation as to why he did it. that's coming up at 5:00 tonight. alison: let's go ahead and turn to the weather now because more rain is on the way for this week. larry: sure is. doug hill is here to explain when we'll need those umbrellas. hey, doug. doug: hey, larry and alison. by friday don't put them far away. you'll need them back. things are slow to clear out. still some cloudiness. filtered sunshine getting through. warm us up to 68 degrees at reagan national airport. 64 in martinsburg, hagerstown and frederick. 66 degrees right now in fredricksburg and we'll see a pleasant enough evening. skies will clear. might even clear soon enough to enjoy beautiful sunset tonight. temperatures will fall through the 50's and even the 40's. 42 to 50. the range of overnight temperatures. the high pressure across areas of eastern canada to new england, pushing south slowly. that has kept the rain to the south and in time this evening will push the clouds out of the way and make for a pretty good forecast as we head through the day tomorrow. lots of sunshine and 67. plan on the rain on friday. mild 70. saturday looks terrific. sunshine and mid 70's. there's our averages. 67 and 47. good this time of year to get a few days where we're actually above average temperatures. check out the next seven days in just a few minutes. alison? alison: thank you. a new service promises faster security check-ins for air travelers at b.w.i. airport. a new york based company called clear plans to open kiosks at the airport next week. at the kiosks travelers can have their identities verified with iris or fingerprint scans and then they can skip the long security lines and proceed to t.s.a. screening. the service costs $15 a month per passenger. a spouse or partner can be added for $50 a year. those under 18 years old are free. larry: new details are emerging about a key witness in the deadly shooting of walter scott. the attorney for the man who was in the car with scott said his client heard the crackle of a taser and heard shots fired but did not see the shooting. pierre fulton releasing a statement calling scott "a dear friend who made him a better man." former north charleston police officer michael slager is charged with murder for shooting scott as he ran away. alison: coming up at 4:00 today, actress rita wilson says a doctor's second opinion helped detect her cancer. we're going to hear from the doctor about why patients shouldn't be afraid to ask for that second opinion. we'll be right back. alison: actress rita wilson's fight with breast cancer. she reveals a second opinion is what saved her life. wilson told "people" magazine she was originally misdiagnosed and initial findings missed the cancer. wilson said it was a friend who told her to get a second opinion and she did. and discovered the cancer. the actress has now undergone a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. so we're happy today that joining us is dr. shawna willie the director of medstar health regional health breast program, you're a breast surgeon as well medstar georgetown and appreciate you being here today. >> thank you. alison: dr. willie wilson's case is bringing this to light. a lot of people are discussing this issue of second opinion. what do we learn from what happened here? >> well second opinions help to confirm what the first opinion was or if the two opinions are different, maybe even a third opinion would be necessary. in her case, she actually got a second opinion from another pathologist. and that's really the starting point for the diagnosis and then the treatment decisions are based on establishing the correct diagnosis. she has something that's fairly uncommon and fairly rare. especially in a study where something is uncommon having somebody who looks at those slides a second time can actually change the diagnosis and we see that happen. alison: is it unusual for -- you hear about getting a second opinion from a second doctor. but is it unusual for a request to be made for another pathologist to look at the results. >> we actually do that on a routine basis at georgetown. there are national guidelines that suggest that should be done. so i would say it's not unusual. but it is not always done. and it is a question as to how many second opinions you're going to get because you do need to get on with your treatments. alison: sure. would you say as a general rule, you know, she was taking friends' advice but probably following her gut as well. would you say as a general rule that's an important part of being a patient, taking control of how you feel about this? >> time and again, i've had a patient who really leads me to make the right decisions for them. she was in a high risk situation. she had had a condition that predicted that she was at higher than average risk of developing breast cancer. so she did almost certainly have a gut feeling about that. and if you are not comfortable with the recommendations that you've gotten the opinion that you got then it is always good to get a second opinion. alison: thank you so much. appreciate you being here with us. coming up next on abc 7 news at 4:00 a "7 on your side" consumer alert. what you think is a bargain could be anything but that. why buying
