that's where suzanne kennedy is there live to continue our coverage this evening. what have you learned? suzanne: leon and autria, the officer arrived here in the 9:00 hour and brought here by anne arundel county ambulance number 21 which was here for much of the morning. that is the ambulance that we saw and the officer getting loaded into and ultimately be transported here from fort meade. we want to show you aerial nootage of when that man was being transported. it shows the male police officer wounded as he was about to get into the audience. he was able to get on the gurney himself and he had his right arm in a sling and his left arm by his side. you can see it is bloodied. we contacted the hospital spokespeople and due to hospital privacy laws, they were unable to give us information about the officer. we know from sources on the scene, his injuries were not serious. we did within the hour what we believe to be an associate and colleague of the officer leave and get into a federal vehicle. he appeared to be carrying the wounded officer's uniform in a plastic bag but we have not seen the officer leave the hospital and the hospital spokespeople will not provide the hospital says the patient has improved going from serious to fair condition now. and the person's name is still not being revealed now. we're told that the patient contracted ebola while volunteering at sierra leone and arrived at the n.i.h. two weeks ago. heading in a good direction. autria: good news there. mild start to your work week. leon: we might need the umbrellas tomorrow. new information in last week's deadly plane crash in the french alps. prosecutors say the co-pilot was treated for suicidal tendencies years before he came a pilot. here's more on the co-pilot's psychological state. reporter: the new revelations are chilling. >> been in treatment of a psychotherapist. reporter: the new timeline shocking. >> before he got his pilot's license. reporter: it turns out that andreas lubitz were treated for tendencies and there were more excuses from work. he hid his medical issues from his employers. a note they found torn up inside his dusseldorf apartment. >> but these documents don't show anything of being suicidal or being aggressive. reporter: the 27-year-old shared this apartment with his girlfriend believed to be a math teacher at a nearby school. his mother played the organ at a church in his hometown and the pastor admits he did not her well but spoke to her after the crash. and now the subject for investigators. not only his psychological state but also the voice recorder that captured the final moments before he crashed the plane. according to the german paper, you can hear the captain trying to return to the cockpit shouting "for god's sake open the door". the last thing heard, passengers screaming. despite the latest findings, officials say they don't know the motive and no suicide note has been found. autria: the national bardo museum is open to the public for the first time since the deadly terror attack. gunmen opened fire on terrorists march 18th killing 22 people. it was the country's worst attack on civilians in 13 years. two of the gunmen in that attack were killed by police. several others have been arrested. the suspected mastermind was killed in the security raid over the weekend. leon: the decision is growing over indiana's new freedom of religion law. some say it opens the doors for discrimination against gays and lesbians. scott thuman is here with more on the controversy. what's the story? scott: you can hear that criticism from indiana to the white house but there are two sides to this story. so let's try and explain what's happening here. republican lawmakers as well as the governor there in indiana say that the law is meant to prevent big government from telling businesses what they must do. for example, religiously, they don't want to do business with certain people, the critics, though, say that the law makes it easier to discriminate especially over sexual orientation. either way it has created such a firestorm that today, after a long list of businesses including ones like apple and angie's list spoke out against the new law, republican leaders announced this morning that they will alter or amend it. >> i think it's terribly unfair what's being said against our state. we don't support discrimination in this state. somehow, people are suggesting it for that reason. >> the governor and the republican leaders won't say it but we will. discrimination is wrong it and should be illegal. scott: indiana is hardly the only state with a law like this one. what makes it so different? what are people angry about this particular one? we'll explore and that talk about the proposed changes, what may be taking place that could at least quiet some of the anger. but that's still up for debate, too. have that for you coming up in an hour. scott thuman abc 7 news. autria: apple's c.e.o. tim cook is voicing his opposition to indiana's religious freedom law. in an op ed piece to "the washington post," cook called the law dangerous and says it has the potential to end decades of progress towards greater equality. cook said he was opposing the law on behalf of apple, a company that strives to conduct the business that is just and fair. many of you have weighed in on this law on our abc 7 facebook page. danita wrote when a business refuses to everybody is a customer because of different lifestyle beliefs, it is discrimination no matter how you crashed at the intersection of race track road and kimberwick drive. one person was pronounced dead and another was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. we're working to get more information about what caused the accident. leon: jet blue said it had a computer outage but travelers can see delays up and down the east coast. that glitch prevented passengers from checking in at the airline sefrl service kiosk and that long line, workers had to issue handwritten boarding passes. >> like standing outside for an hour. >> nice if they had people instructing where to go. nobody knows what line goes where. leon: jet blue is apologizing for the outage. airline says that the residual delays are expected up and down the east coast and would not specify, however, how long it would take to get everything back to normal. autria: let's get ready to rumble. the university of maryland's women team tonight. leon: that's right. they are one win away from getting to the ncaa final four. sports director tim brandt joining us to tell us about it. tim: the women never get the attention that men do. only in basketball. hey, but this is huge tonight. maryland women are trying to get back to the final four for the second year in a row. of course, the lady terps won the national title in 2006 the head coach only seems to have a contender. she's a great recruiter, the players love to play for her. she is a fabulous coach. during the games, making adjustments. most of all, she is a motivator and known for her fiery speeches. she gives her girls a check up from the neck up when she need it the most. after one of the speeches from the heart, her team believes they are world beaters. now they play tennessee in the elite eight trying desperately to get back to the final check on the traffic situation. jamie sullivan here with the details. jamie: first we'll start out with the red that we're seeing. we got it namely in that stretch near the american legion bridge getting from maryland to virginia and same thing on the inner loop and then we're really seeing it a lot through oxon hill. i want to focus on accidents. it's right near triangle. you can see this red line. at this point, you're averaging only about six miles per hour so yes, we are in the single digits but the crash that we've got is northbound. move to the southbound side. average under 20 minutes getting to the beltway and closer to the occoquan. this is on the outer loop near on the beltway near the toll road. look at all of this red only averageing about 13 miles per hour and right here is the 270 spur. it's mainly going to be approaching the beltway and then once you get on the beltway. we take a look from above to give you an idea. again, slowing on the top side of the beltway and then in d.c. we have an accident. this one to watch out for northbound d.c. 295 at pennsylvania avenue. so still have a few crashes and have some of the normal congestion this afternoon. you will not have any problems. 95 baltimore washington parkway is clear. back to you. leon: thanks, jamie. autria: doug, beautiful day out there right now. doug: perfect spring day. some areas saw snow and sleet and rain earlier. autria: it was snowing in alexandria about 3:00 this morning. doug: steve rudin is front of our studios here in rosslyn. what's the deal with blossom? steve: it's looking really good out there right now. a little bit of a setback for the day tomorrow and then warmer air towards the end of the week and then give a punch to the blooms. take a look at what it looks like right now. you can see how the blossoms now just beginning to started. it will take another two weeks or so peak period april 11th through april 14th at least 70% of the blooms will be in full bloom. it's going to start earlier than that so if you have relatives coming into town, april 7th 8th, 9th you'll be in good shape there. if your allergies are bothering you, you better get ready. already starting. here's the pollen count for you. tree pollen now in the high category. grasses and mold in the low category. and expect those categories to increase as they move through the next few weeks. clear up quickly. it's start to go look a little bit more like spring not only here but across the weather maps. look at the numbers now. after a chilly start to the day, 65 at reagan national right now and 63 in manassas. 61 degrees in baltimore as well and the temperatures right now represent a big jump over what the numbers were yesterday at this time. 18 degrees warmer in washington. and manassas. 16 degrees warmer in gaithersburg. now, tonight, we'll watch the continuation of the clearing trend. the front went off the coast and high pressure is building in. clear skies for the most part later tonight. still a few clouds now but already, the next system and the upper level winds will come shooting across the ohio and western pennsylvania and bring more rain here by the afternoon and evening. a little temperature change, too, coming. mild temperatures, not warm. but mild behind the front, look at this temperatures in the 70's in central and southern plains and that is the weather pat he were that's going to start moving in here thursday and friday. i may have just dropped it. let me cover my bald spot while i drop to get it. we're all good. here's the deal on the justice on a death penalty mitigation issue so it's a wonderful city. jummy: wonderful. i know that "hot bench" isn't your typical court tv show. can you talk a little bit about what sets this show apart? >> i think the biggest difference between our show and a lot of the other court shows is people really get to see how judges make decisions. a lot of the times that process is foreign to screenings at the national zoo. just ahead of easter monday a number of violent incidents in recent years. sam ford with more now on the story that's new at 4:00. >> this way! you can bring it all around! sam: this is the national zoo today and greeted with new security screening. no metal detecting machines to pass through. it's required to enter many government buildings but visitors open bags so security can inspect them. >> it was ok. it's not a machine, right? not this time. it was ok right? >> i'm glad. that's a good thing. to make sure everybody is safe. auto a>> period of time to do it. sam: today is african-american day, carryover from the day of segregation. in recent years there have been violent incidents. last yee, two people were wounded in front of the zoo and two years before, a teen was stabbed at the zoo. council member from that area. >> nothing over the top. it's a level of security together with coordination with m.p.d. on the outside, should give people a sense of comfort. leon: this year the zoo is calling easter monday washington family celebration where city residents will mingle with what is a national crowd and it seems everyone is used to security. >> better be safe than sorry. >> they were very polite and very courteous about it. sam: the zoo would not provide anyone to go on camera to discuss what they're doing. spokeswoman said this is one of many measures they are taking as they get ready for the larger crowds in the spring and summer months and yes it will all be in place on easter monday. reporting from northwest washington, out there and sunny, too. temperatures in the 60's. feels like spring. live look at the weather bug camera. in ocean city, maryland it looks nice. no umbrellas on the beach. has something to do with the fact that water temperatures in the 40's. i'm guessing that's going to be it. what we do this time of year is take a couple of steps forward and one step back weatherwise. that will be the story this week. we saw that shot. that came from the plaza hotel on boardwalk where it's 56 degree air temperature and gusty winds as well. locally, 65 at reagan national. 61 degrees in martinsburg. 66 degrees in fredricksburg on the hour with a fair amount of sunshine. clear skies tonight but already tomorrow's rain moving just north of chicago right now. we'll see showers tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow evening but again, that story will be the temperatures are not showing any signs of getting colder. more for you in the next couple of days. leon: a family in montgomery county had to find another place to stay after fire damaged their home overnight. this happened on brin-mar avenue. no one was hurt in the cause of that fire. autria: we know the identity of a man shot in the district this morning. 2 they found him suffering from apparent gunshot wounds and he later died at the hospital. police are offering a $25,000 reward for anyone with information leading to an arrest. leon: virginia governor terry mcauliffe approved the design face of a planned renovation at the state capitol. it's estimated to cost $300 million. the governor suspended to work on the project last year. plans call for a new office building and parking deck as well for state lawmakers along with the old city hall. autria: the man convicted of having unprotected sex with women knowing he had h.i.v. will spend 18 months behind bars. daniel cleaves was sentenced this morning. jeanette reyes has emotional reaction. jeanette: daniel cleaves will serve 18 months behind bars with time served. this comes after an emotional serving early this morning where disturbing details were referred to repeatedly in these court documents including the moments when one of the victims found out that she was exposed to h.i.v. on multiple occasions. late last year cleaves had unprotected sex with two women without telling them he was h.i.v. positive. he says he was taking drugs that made transmission highly unlikely. court documents detail a text message exchange between the victim and cleaves. she tells him -- i can't believe you didn't tell me and says i don't feel like living anymore. he says he's truly sorry. he pleaded guilty to two counts of reckless endangerment. cleaves sobbed loudly this morning as his parents pleaded with the judge to let him off with time served. the judge gave him 18 months sentence minus 157 days. >> dan recognizes most of all that because he felt the same pain that these victims felt that he's going to remember that if he ever thinks about doing this again. >> he denied the choice of these women victims whether or not they wanted to engage in sexual behavior with him. jeanette: the law does not require that cleaves be register registered as a sex offender. if more victims come forward, he will face additional charges. reporting in montgomery county jeanette reyes, abc 7 news. leon: the rockville city police department say overall, crime dropped 3% last year. figures show that the biggest drop category was in burglaries. they're down 30% from 199 to 139. robberies saw the biggest increase with 18%. however, the number of reported rapes in rockville increased from six to 10. police say in most of the incidents the victim knew the offender. autria? autria: the fiancee of the former patriots player aaron hernandez testified in his murder trial today. she took the stand for a second day after being called by the prosecutor to the stand. jenkins admitted she removed a box from their basement at hernandez the day after the slaying. leon: authorities in panama beach, florida blame spring break for a shooting that wounded seven college students. police say a fight broke out at a house party near the beach. a 21-year-old opened fire hitting students along with one in the face. he's now in custody charged with attempted murder. >> we have drunk people under the influence of drugs with guns and no respect for themselves others, and most of all authority. we have a recipe for disaster! leon: police say this is one of nearly 600 crimes reported since spring break began over the weekend. one city councilman proposed alcohol restrictions on beaches and earlier closing times for the bars. but that suggestion went nowhere. autria: those poor officers. could you imagine? leon: no. autria: coming up at 4:00 not everybody is laughing at jamie foxx's jokes. why some are accusing him of being transphobic. leon: a consumer alert on facebook. you'll want to take a second look at ♪ ♪ ♪ autria: need a little extra it was intended for people on disability like her. >> yeah i was able to help -- john: she texted government agent that was handling the grant that told her to wire a $300 processing fee to receive the check and you guessed the right. >> i september the money and found it was a scam. john: the government agent a scammer. her aunt who received the grant, her facebook page had been hacked by the scammer. she is out $300. we called the so-called agent's number but all we got was a full voicemailbox. her friend who received the same facebook post is dangerous. >> it's wrong to take advantage of people like that. people are struggling as it is. to take advantage of people like that is ridiculous and disgusting. john: she says it's horrible to prey on people like dancy who borrowed the $300 she spent because she had no money to begin with. the government will never text you about money. grants are hard to get and require a long application process. don't waste your money. leon: up next weather center. we have some snow this morning. yet, we're only about 63 days away from the beginning of the hurricane season. but it's never too early to start preparing for storms. the national hurricane conference is under way in austin texas today. and reporter alex boyer is live in austin with what they're focusing on this year. what stands out, alex? alex: i can tell you they're focusing on a lot of things obviously but it's all about the storm surge today. you know right now, inside the austin convention center you could say it's the calm before the storm. yet, emergency workers from all across the nation taking part in this three-day workshop and as you can imagine, they're really hoping for the best but they're preparing for that worst case scenario. its wind packs a powerful punch. >> supposed to be -- alex: and the aftermath of a hurricane is almost always devastating. >> we have to double down on our education experts. alex: he is a storm specialist with the national hurricane center in florida. he's worried about the people that are inland not aware of mother nature. >> it becomes increasingly difficult for coastal residents to understand that saltwater could come into their home and threaten their life. alex: experts say storm surge is the number one killing hazard of any hurricane. >> the conditions and the intensity. alex: at the national hurricane conference in austin texas, the best in the business are trying to figure out how to get that message to the masses. >> our goal really is to ensure the lines of communication will always stay open between the folks who are making the forecast and the people who need the forecast to make decisions. alex: people like john wilson. he's retired now. up until last year it was wilson who decided which parts of florida should be evacuated. >> it's amazing how many had a clue that it was out there. we thought we were doing a good job of conveying it through the normal, traditional media. alex: hurricane experts are forced to track people's viewing hablts turning to the internet for people. >> now based on the generation out there, you have to kind of focus your message on social media. alex: and they will release this year's hurricane outlook is may 27th in new orleans and doug, as you recall this was a city devastated by hurricane katrina nearly a decade ago. doug: absolutely. a lot of people don't understand even when you're far away from the coast like in the hill country in texas, the hurricane rains can do a lot of damage where you're standing. alex: that's right. i was talking to a meteorologist here from the national hurricane center and he tells me that's exactly it. it's all about the storm surge. because that storm surge can reach some 15 or 20 miles inland and a lot of people who live there think they're not going to be affected by this but clearly they are. doug: thank you very much sir. alex boyer reporting live from austin. take a look at the local forecast update in a few minutes. leon and autria? autria: thank you. attorneys for the wife of robin williams and his kids agreed to settle the dispute. they agreed to meet before april 10th on the matter. williams' relatives are arguing who should get clothes and other personal items that the actor kept at a home in northern california. williams' wife says some of the actor's personal items were taken without her permission. leon: actor and comedian jamie foxx is being calls transphobic and disgusting after making jokes about former olympian bruce jenner. now, this happened during foxx's himself. leon: jenner is transitioning from male to female. fox has not responded to the social media backlash that he's now having to endure. autria? autria: a new app aims to keep your teen safe behind the wheel. a new triple a study finds distracted driving is to blame for 58% of all crashes involving teen drivers. drive safe mode is trying to prevent that. the idea is to keep teen drivers from picking up their phone while driving and if that happens, it notifies parents. >> i'm in trouble if i do do it so i don't know. i think it's ok. >> i told her if you're going to drive, please do half of americans are not saving enough. the bank rate survey says about half of those surveyed save 5% or less of their incomes. that includes 18% not saving a single dime. the recommended amount to save is about 15% on your income. only 1 in 7 are actually saving more than that. finishing work around your house got a little bit easier. today, on-line retailer amazon launched amazon home services. there's a new marketplace there for on demand professional services. amazon home services gives customers a way to browse purchase and schedule hundreds of professional services like house cooler and still talk about safe driving? comedy central named a new host to replace john stewart on "the daily show." trevor noah. he is a 31-year-old biracial comedian from south africa. noah joined all of that. we couldn't see more than 1500 feet this morning but it's cleared out nicely. 65 with the breeze out of the northwest right now at reagan national airport. so temperatures they're comfortable now after rising through the 60's during the day. turn around but won't get terribly cold overnight. you won't find any terribly cold weather in the seven-day outlook. things are looking up. 52 in new york city and laguardia. 65 in comparison here and temperatures 70 or higher through parts of the midwest central and southern plains. that's the weather pattern that will shift in our direction late on friday and into saturday. in between teams, we'll take a look at this and enjoy it. all these numbers show how much warmer it is now than it was last year. folks getting a tease of spring weather. tomorrow, we'll have sunshine and then the next storm system shots on its way to chicago land. that likely will bring more rain by tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night. this is the futurecast. sun in the morning. steady increase in cloudiness expected during the day. showers are moving out of the blue ridge. and then we'll have rain for the rush home tomorrow afternoon. tomorrow evening, but that too, should quickly clear out of here as the next cold front comes through. clearing skies as we get through tomorrow night and through wednesday and thursday as well. so overnight, 39. not terribly cold. it will be cleared as we head through the day tomorrow. sunshine in the morning. afternoon and evening showers. still mild. upper 50's to lower 60's and then the next seven days a cooler day on wednesday with sunshine. look at how temperatures pop on thursday and friday. 70, 71 72. it will be another storm system approaching. cold front late friday with the good chance of rain and showers could last through midday on saturday. easter sunday looks nice. sunshine, upper 50's and touch warmer by monday. leon: all right. doug: i've done my job. autria: thanks for the sunshine. leon: see if folks are moving at all on the monday commute. let's see what's happening with jamie sullivan. jamie: not moving too fast in some spots. i want to begin with a crash. 95 northbound in virginia near triangle. the nice thing about this is it's actually northbound and not southbound so it's not going to affect you trying to commute home southbound on 95. right now averaging, well only about 41 miles per hour. once you get past the accident but before that, we're only in the 20's and that's going to be where you're seeing a lot of this red. as far as our commute in maryland getting there on the beltway and that stretch across the american legion bridge we're in single digits. it is slow! this is very typical for us. earlier disabled which is adding to the congestion. as we take over the whole beltway, you see two problem spots on the top side near 270. live look near montross to show you and give an idea of the pace. not terrible. we've got everyone commuting out on this stretch. and then as we move back to our maps, i want to focus in on the area where we've got a crash so it is on the inner loop of the beltway right near central avenue. you can see already a red line. let's pull out to show you how slow we are. some spots only at about 14 miles per hour and as we take a look in this area it gives you an idea of how congested we are. keep that in mind. that is a look at traffic. back to you. autria: jamie, thank you. coming up next here on abc 7 news at 4:00 a woman is brutally attacked near a skate park and it's all caught on camera. why bystanders say they leon: amazing, shocking scene in california where a woman is now recovering from a cracked skull, a broken jaw and more after men attacked her near a skate park. autria: cell phone video shows one man hitting her with a skateboard. peter: this cell phone video as shocking as it is brutal. a young woman in venice fights off her attackers before one of them slams her head with a skateboard. she falls to the ground and begins to wail. witnesses who say they felt scared and outnumbered choose not to help. >> she cracked her head open. peter: one man holds the woman up and another rushes in to punch her. the attacker continues to pound and kick the woman who was still on the ground. >> hard to believe it -- that no one stepped in. peter peter: she's friend with the woman who recorded the video and gave a copy to police. it started at the venice skate park when the victim got into a verbal fight with several men. the young woman walked away but the men followed her to nearby pacific avenues and that's when police say things took a violent turn. police say two other men were also injured in the brawl. but it's the woman beaten and attacked with a skateboard who suffered the worst. requiring surgery for a cracked skull and broken jaw. >> taunting. it's really, really disturbing. autria: two other men were injured in the attacks. police do not have a motive and so far no arrests have been made. that's it for abc 7 news at 4:00. the news at 5:00 starts right now. leon: a deadly confrontation with an odd back story. how two men dress as women ended up at the gates of the n.s.a. and under fire. young life lost. questions surrounding the weekend plane crash over the weekend and the skills of its pilot. remarkable survival of a firefighter who disappears in a flash. it's after 10:30 a.m. and you got to have that egg mcmuffin. you may now be in luck! leon: shots rang out at the gate outside of the national security agency leaving one man dead and another injured. jummy: this happened at the entrance of fort meade on connector road over the baltimore washington parkway. brad bell was one of the first reporters on the scene and he's there live now with how this may have begun with a stolen car and a wrong turn. brad? brad: yeah wrong turn is right. you know, this began with an awful lot of violence. our first reports, was it a car that was ramming the gate at n.s.a. and police returned fire. the only vantage point from news chopper 7 and we want to get to that video. when you see that video, you'll see a police cruiser bashed up and you'll see another s.u.v. nearby and you'll see a white sheet on the ground. that's one of the suspects from the car. what we understand happened is this car approaches the gate to one of the most heavily guarded, most secure facilities in the world. officers tell the driver to turn around. but the driver does not obey those commands. barricades pop up and the driver tries to ram that police car. that is when officers opened fire. one of the suspects killed on the spot. the others seriously injured. one of the police officers injured in the car crash. and then this back story that you talked about. police looked at the suspects and realized
