Maintenance, money spent or anything. Again, were standing by for all those details in the preliminary report from the ntsb. Could get that into the newsroom any minute. Well bring you the latest details as soon as we get them. Reporting live in southwest washington, mike conneen, abc 7 news. Thank you. The mind set of some metro passengers seems to be changing these days after mondays incident. This morning, abc 7 saw several people tweeting about smoke in the rosalynn station just down the street as a matter of fact from our studio here and we sent a crew out and they found an odd smell there in the station but things running just fine. But richard wolf tweeted this picture noting the orange line train emptied at rosalynn and smoke fills cars. And then steve cuff tweeted this. Orange line car at rosalynn starts getting something burning smell before metro even says anything. People get the hell off new reality. That could be the case. Abc 7 did call metro and we found out there was a problem with the brakes on a train there and that could have been what caused the smoke in the station. They say theres nothing serious. Alison . Earlier this week the metropolitan council of governments released its report on the state of our regions infrastructure. It found a 16 billion gap in funding for Public Transportation over the next decade. Overall, the region falls about 58 billion short in the next 10 years. Thats for everything from transportation to energy and water projects. The district is already undertaking a massive project. They had a storm water overflow. They blessed the anaconda River Project last month, you may remember that scene and today Vice President joe biden toured the area to see how the whole project is coming along. D. C. Bureau chief sam ford is there and joins us live from the site along independence avenue in southeast. Hey, sam hello leon. Well, i am in front of a drill head. It is the second of three drillheads that eventually are going to be put underground to drill massive storm tunnels under the city and as you can see, this thing is huge. The Vice President joined the mayor here today to congratulate d. C. On its efforts to clean up its rivers right now after a big rain. A long of untreated sewage flows into the potomac and anacostia rivers. Once these 13 miles of tunnels are completed, they will hold the overflow until it can be properly treated meaning much cleaner rivers. The Vice President said it makes economic sense because business is not going to come to places where the water is dirty. If were going to lead the world in the 21st century and we are leading the world in the 21st century, we have to have the most modern infrastructure in the world. And this drill head has a name actually. Her name is nanny for nanny Helen Burroughs who was an educator who lived in washington, northeast washington many years ago. Theres another drill head thats called lady byrd for lady byrd johnson. Shes already at work heading north, this drill head will be heading south they will meet somewhere around poplar point as they contract these mas tunnels. This particular project will be completed, were told in 2017. Well have more at 5 00. Back to you. All right. Alison, assist hard as it was to hear today, Martin Harris tells me attended court today to gain both clarity and closure. As many will remember police were called to a hor bizarre scene at that germantown home last january. Inside, four children all between the ages of 1 and 8 had been brutally stabbed and choked. The 1 and 2yearolds were found dead wrapped in sheets placed on a bed. Paramedics did, however, manage to save the 5 and 8yearold. It wasnt long before Police Arrested the childrens mothers, zaciah avery and her close church friend. The women told police they didnt intend to kill children but pluck demons from their bodies. Today, sanford admitted her guilt but in turn was not held criminally responsible by reason of insanity. Instead of sitting in a prison cell, a judge committed the 22yearold to a secure Mental Health facility in jessup maryland. So she is in her own prison. Shell have teal with her own life. If she comes to terms with it she comes to terms with it. If she doesnt, she might end up there. She believed that she had been nishlted into this group of demon assassins and she and this avery, it was their mission. A judge denied Christopher Lee cornell bond about two hours ago. Rebecca cooper is standing by in our live desk. Shes got more including word of who was shouting out in court today. Tell us about that. Thats right, it was Christopher Lee cornells father who shouted out to his son inside the courtroom dont trust anyone. As you said, the judge ordered that he be held without bail and today, were learning more about cornell and some of the paranoia that may have factored into his psychology. Take a look at this picture that was taken by our abc affiliate in cincinnati. This was taken at a 9 11 memorial event in 2013. Cornell showed up protesting and holding a sign that reads 9 11 was an inside job. In smaller print, he wrote the free masons did it. Now, were also learning as a teenager cornell twice faced police charges. In one incident he was charged with Domestic Violence against his mother. A year earlier, he and his brother were cited for beating up a classmate. His father had to say about why he believes his son is innocent. Auto too if i thought he was up to something, i would have been the first one to turn him in. I would have turned him in to save his life. Cornells record shows this was a young man who was bullied at school and frequently ran away from home. These incidents fit the profile of a type of young man vulnerable to a radical and extremist group. Theyll be considering that as they continue to hold them without bail in ohio. Investigators inspected the area of incident and also provide pictures in this preliminary report of the third rail. They say they observed severe electrical arcing damage to the third rail and electrical cables about 1100 feet ahead of the trains, one of the trains impacted and stranding passengers. Recorded data shows at 3 06 p. M. , monday afternoon an electrical breaker at one end of the section of third rail tripped and about 10 minutes later, the Operations Control Center began activating ventilation fans in an effort to exhaust all that smoke from the area. The electrical breaker at the other end of the third rail section remained closed and confined power until the remote told the command to open that breaker around 3 50. The ntsb said the investigation continues. Theyre reviewing maintenance records of the track, of signals and power inspections. Rail car vehicles documentation on previous events with smoke generation. Maintenance and repair records as well as looking at employee training records. Investigators have collected material samples from the incident site and theyre also examining the samples at the ntsb materials lab. In addition investigators are conducting interviews with personnel involved and have begun the collection and review of available surveillance video. So as we expected, we would get these preliminary facts but this investigation will continue for many, many months before we get a final report and possibly recommendations from metro or from the ntsb on how metro can prevent this type of incident from occurring again, the severe nature of the electrical arcing and were also standing by and we expect to get it tomorrow, the internal report from the d. A busy roadway has been reopened but repair work is still under way after a water main break in alexandria. Thats right, it was a 12inch break between king street and park center drive. And it created a despiser of water. About 6 30 this morning. Jeanette reyes spoke to impacted residents. Residents here didnt know what to make of it at first. Looking out the window and i thought a fire or something. A major water main break on park center road tore through this cement and asphalt making way for a geyser that shot up 20 feet in the sky. Kind of icy walking because a lot of the areas where the water had been pooling, you know its below freezing right now. Thousands of gallons of water then became a treacherous river that streamed down king street later created a thin sheet of ice. It was actually kind of interesting to look at but im sure with traffic, its very much a pain to all the folks that are trying to get to and from now. Even after the geyser slowly retreated back into the gaping hole the damage was done. Dangerous conditions forced them to shut down king street near i395 for over two hours, that meant two bus service. My commute today is going to involve walking. Jim snyder took it better than most. How far is your walk . Five miles. Not a big deal, though. But he wasnt the only one having to hit the pavement this morning. Walk a little bit to get to work.
