to the expanding search for hannah graham. crews expanded beyond charlottesville into scottsville, about 20 miles south. our northern virginia bureau chief joins us with the latest. >> we spoke with the chief of police in the last hour. they're still looking for surveillance video or anything they can get that would detail the whereabouts and activities in the daysthew following the disappearance of hannah graham. this man is coordinating the search efforts. areas based on tips coming in. about 35 people were involved in the search today along with canine units. jesse matthew remains in jail post forom the command the search efforts. he is awaiting a court hearing in connection with the disappearance of hannah graham more than two weeks ago. >> we know areas where she is not. largely a process of elimination. tips keep as long as coming in the search will continue. a 20-year-old virginia tech student was abducted and killed here five years ago. i spoke briefly with the attorney for jesse matthew about that situation and the investigation. we will have more on that coming up tonight at 5:00. will see you then. on the meantime -- in the meantime, the search for a man with autism has gone nationwide. missing sincebeen thursday after leaving a vocational program. he has a history of wandering, but has always been found within two days. he is considered an endangered -- person.sing >> michael phelps was charged with a dui last night. he was driving 84 in a 45 zone. the officer who pulled him over said phelps was unable to pass the field sobriety test. this is his second dui in maryland. the first was in 2004. he tweeted this. how about a more positive sports story? who do you think is going to the world series? >> if you ask major league whose , the are not white house, omar gonzalez. this is what we know at this point. gonzalez is age 42, formerly from texas, he has a three count indictment against him. of unlawfully while carryings a dangerous weapon. he is charged with carrying a dangerous weapon outside a home or business and the third is possession of ammunition. on will recall that september 19, he jumped the fence and ran through the first of the white house while carrying a knife. the first family was not there at the time but it unleashed a controversy about just how safe the white house really is. the secret service searched his car after a fire in a home. what else can you tell us? >> we're following two incidents. one is an automobile wreck, also someone deceased. then we have a home that is several miles from their and we don't know if there is a connection yet except neighbors we sawld me that the car is the family car from this home in this community. certainly, we don't want to talk about any names, but folks tell us they know the family that lives in this house well. they say they are good people, active in the community. one neighbor saw both of them yesterday, wife out yesterday jogging. they don't know who the deceased are, but they are terrified and upset about this. this is a potomac neighborhood of homes of > 4000 square feet each, 4500-4600 square feet each . neighbors are being kept some quarter-mile away. roads are closed. we have not been able to get a look at this ourselves except from our helicopter in the photographs that have been tweeted by the fire department. this was apparently a tall fire in the garage that was quickly extinguished and then they found a person deceased inside. this point, the police have been coming in and out. neighbors are pacing with arms folded, worried looks on their faces. don't know what is going on but they know something terrible has happened in their neighbors, and they are horribly upset about it. >> the offense appears to be broken or broken through with some sort of force. there are still details to be sifted through on this story. we will wait and see in the days and hours to come. >> in the meantime, we are following breaking news about two miles away. someone is dead after a car crashed into a tree at river and piney meetinghouse road. we are live with the latest, steven. >> this is what we've got. we are right at the intersection of these two thoroughfares. right behind me you can see the car that slammed into the tree. investigators are still combing the scene, trying to figure out what is going on. here is what we have gleaned from authorities. the person at the wheel of the car was a fatality. that call came in one minute before the call -- apologize for that. technical difficulties. we will try to get him back to see what he has learned. we are keeping our eye on this. smalle occurrences in a section of the potomac. we will keep our eyes and ears open and let you know what we hear. the two have good news for you. changes are coming to 270 that are going to make many commuters happy. the downside is they are probably not going to see those than a decade.e this is part of a long-range plan for the d.c. area. it stretches until 2040. the 270 section is the largest project in the entire d.c. area, 33 miles from frederick down toward shady grove, an area that is very congested as it is. it's going to be widened at a cost of about $5 billion. this stretch of 270 is a nightmare for the meters dash for commuters. they say it can take as long as two hours. they say it is welcome news but they are hesitant as well. section finishes, it just pushes traffic further down, so it doesn't actually fix the problem. but it does make me happy to hear they are doing it. >> some folks are pushing an alternative plan. instead of widening the entire highway, they want to widen just the shoulders to lead commuter frederickng down from and hagerstown drive on the shoulder during heavy traffic hours. that is a plan that has been studied in the past and they are hoping to keep the fight alive. >> thank you. a report out last week by the u.s. department of transportation finds more breaking news tonight coming in from potomac where investigators are on two different scenes. fire in a garage with one person dead inside. the other, just a few miles away, at deadly car crash. investigators are trying to figure out of these cases are connected. >> an investigation is underway in the deadly car crash that happened on piney meetinghouse road near river road. roads in front of both scenes are shut down. >> breaking news coverage from the scene. what have we learned? >> it seems like this is where all of this began. the police have this road closed off. they are not letting anybody go down there at this point. we can tell you that the call came in from the fire department for smoke showing from the garage. when the fire department got inside, they found a small fire, deliberately set according to sources. nearby, they found a deceased person. they are telling us it was a female victim. neighbors tell us that the home is the home of a husband, wife, and recently married daughter. the husband arrived here not very long ago. he is alive and well, terribly upset. police have not yet let him go down to the home and we have just heard from sources that the daughter is soon to arrive on the scene. her whereabouts are now accounted for. a lot of people upset. we want to play you some sound of the neighbors. they are not able to get back to their own white house, omar gonzalez. this is what we know at this point. gonzalez is age 42, formerly from texas, he has a three count indictment against him. of unlawfully while carryings a dangerous weapon. he is charged with carrying a dangerous weapon outside a home or business and the third is possession of ammunition. on will recall that september 19, he jumped the fence and ran through the first of the white house while carrying a knife. the first family was not there at the time but it unleashed a controversy about just how safe the white house really is. the secret service searched his car after his arrest. they found hundreds of rounds of ammunition, two hatchets and a machete. i should tell you that gonzalez has been indicted on three counts. one federal, to district. appear induled after a fire in a home. what else can you tell us? >> we're following two incidents. one is an automobile wreck, also someone deceased. then we have a home that is several miles from their and we don't know if there is a connection yet except neighbors we sawld me that the car is the family car from this home in this community. certainly, we don't want to talk about any names, but folks tell us they know the family that lives in this house well. they say they are good people, active in the community. one neighbor saw both of them yesterday, wife out yesterday jogging. they don't know who the deceased are, but they are terrified and upset about this. this is a potomac neighborhood of homes of > 4000 square feet each, 4500-4600 square feet each . neighbors are being kept some quarter-mile away. roads are closed. we have not been able to get a look at this ourselves except from our helicopter in the photographs that have been tweeted by the fire department. this was apparently a tall fire in the garage that was quickly extinguished and then they found a person deceased inside. this point, the police have been coming in and out. neighbors are pacing with arms folded, worried looks on their faces. don't know what is going on but they know something terrible has happened in their neighbors, and they are horribly upset about it. >> the offense appears to be broken or broken through with some sort of force. there are still details to be sifted through on this story. we will wait and see in the days and hours to come. >> in the meantime, we are following breaking news about two miles away. someone is dead after a car crashed into a tree at river and piney meetinghouse road. we are live with the latest, steven. >> this is what we've got. we are right at the intersection of these two thoroughfares. right behind me you can see the car that slammed into the tree. investigators are still combing the scene, trying to figure out what is going on. here is what we have gleaned from authorities. the person at the wheel of the car was a fatality. that call came in one minute before the call -- apologize for that. technical difficulties. we will try to get him back to see what he has learned. we are keeping our eye on this. smalle occurrences in a section of the potomac. we will keep our eyes and ears open and let you know what we hear. the two have good news for you. changes are coming to 270 that are going to make many commuters happy. the downside is they are probably not going to see those than a decade.e this is part of a long-range plan for the d.c. area. it stretches until 2040. the 270 section is the largest project in the entire d.c. area, 33 miles from frederick down toward shady grove, an area that is very congested as it is. it's going to be widened at a cost of about $5 billion. this stretch of 270 is a nightmare for the meters dash for commuters. they say it can take as long as two hours. they say it is welcome news but they are hesitant as well. section finishes, it just pushes traffic further down, so it doesn't actually fix the problem. but it does make me happy to hear they are doing it. >> some folks are pushing an alternative plan. instead of widening the entire highway, they want to widen just the shoulders to lead commuter frederickng down from and hagerstown drive on the shoulder during heavy traffic hours. that is a plan that has been studied in the past and they are hoping to keep the fight alive. >> thank you. a report out last week by the u.s. department of transportation finds more breaking news tonight coming in from potomac where investigators are on two different scenes. fire in a garage with one person dead inside. the other, just a few miles away, at deadly car crash. investigators are trying to figure out of these cases are connected. >> an investigation is underway in the deadly car crash that happened on piney meetinghouse road near river road. roads in front of both scenes are shut down. >> breaking news coverage from the scene. what have we learned? >> it seems like this is where all of this began. the police have this road closed off. they are not letting anybody go down there at this point. we can tell you that the call came in from the fire department for smoke showing from the garage. when the fire department got inside, they found a small fire, deliberately set according to sources. nearby, they found a deceased person. they are telling us it was a female victim. neighbors tell us that the home is the home of a husband, wife, and recently married daughter. the husband arrived here not very long ago. he is alive and well, terribly upset. police have not yet let him go down to the home and we have just heard from sources that the daughter is soon to arrive on the scene. her whereabouts are now accounted for. a lot of people upset. we want to play you some sound of the neighbors. they are not able to get back to their own
