and apple fans, get in line. we are hours away from release, and some of you aren't wasting any time. captioned by the national captioning institute --www.ncicap.org-- abc 7 broadcast centers, this is abc seven breaking news. are asking for prayers for this community, the families involved. we ask for patience from the media and public. >> we are following breaking news out of north florida where eight people are dead, the result of a murder suicide. >> this happened this afternoon in the town of bell. police reported a man shot and killed his daughter and six grandchildren. tom roussey is on the story for us. what can you tell us? >> an absolutely awful story. the six grandchildren that the gilchrist county sheriff's their says were killed by grandfather ranged in age from 10 years old to his young as three months old. this is the man police say killed the seven family members and himself. he is 51-year-old don spirit. besides his six grandchildren, and he also killed his adult daughter, this all came to light this afternoon when a deputy came to the home after a report of a shooting. the deputy made some sort of contact with don spirit. don spirit then killed himself. when deputies went inside, they found the other bodies. here, andall family what can you say? there are certain things in life you can explain. there are certain things you can't. >> this all happened in a very rural area of north florida. the town is west of gainesville and only has about 350 people. there were people inside the home was survived, but they didn't say who they were. a criminal history. he got out of prison eight years ago from a gun charge. tom roussey, abc 7 news. in from northwest washington where georgetown university is reporting a student who died days ago had contracted bacterial meningitis. died tuesday. the university had been waiting on testing to determine what sort of meningitis she had. is university reports it working with the cdc tonight, and right now, her case appears to be isolated. no additional cases have been reported. >> developing news at the charlottesville where police are coming through surveillance video, going frame by frame searching for any kinds of clues leading to hannah graham's whereabouts. officers zeroed in on a person of interest. they have a description, but they say they need your help. robert lyles is live in charlottesville. how is the community doing? >> to put it simply, hannah graham's disappearance has stunned the city, so much so that a tidal wave of students filled this amphitheater with one phre on their lips -- bring hannah home. today. came forward >> there is always hope. homecoming has arrived among early at the university of virginia. hundreds of cavaliers hold a candle in one hand, and in the other, praying for anagrams safe homecoming. >> it is a sign of the community get there. a surveillance video from downtown pizza restaurant offered police the first break. graham,is 18-year-old thatalking behind is a man was a witness. >> this gentleman walked up behind her, stuck his arm around her waist. she stopped walking, they faced each other, and had a brief conversation. described thees man as african-american, 5'10", weighing between 250-285 pounds. is in his late 20's, early 30's and was wearing black jeans and a white t-shirt. her close friends are encouraged. >> as far as we should know, she is alive. investigators with rescue dogs scoured riverview park for signs of graham. >> it doesn't seem real that this could happen here. >> the university is offering support where it can. >> everybody is doing what they can to support students. >> in dartmouth, they passed out her favorite candy, starburst. >> just bring her back. >> charlottesville police stress tonight that the person they are looking for is just a person of interest and not a suspect. they are calling on the public to call and with any tips. they are still looking for surveillance video around the downtown area. a $50,000 reward is being offered for any tips that lead to hannah graham. live in charlottesville, robert lyles, abc 7 news. >> in montgomery county, police are not giving up on finding sarah and jacob hoggle. the children and their mother disappeared at the beginning of september. the mother was arrested september 12. today, police conducted a search off i 270. there is no word if anything was found. if you have seen the children or have any information about them, contact police. >> a 7 on your side consumer alert regarding home depot. the company is scrambling to recover from a massive data breach. the store says 56 million cards were compromise between april and september. a spokesman said the malware has been removed from their networks. home depot says it has a new system in place to make data safer. the store is offering free identity protection to anyone who shot during the time. >> let's talk about the weather. it has been one of the best weeks of the year. we may get another day out of this before things start to change. meteorologist steve rudin has a first look at the forecast. >> a quiet night in the belfort furniture weather center. we did have a few showers earlier this evening. they did not amount to a whole lot. annapolis saw some light rain. it stays drive for us around the d.c. metro for the rest of the overnight. looking at temperatures across the board, cumberland, hagerstown at 57 degrees. still hanging onto the upper 60's at reagan national. nighttime lows ranged from the 40's to around 60. to talk about a warm-up for the weekend in a few minutes. d.c. mayoral candidates met for the first time at american university tonight. came out showing councilwoman muriel bowser with a strong lead but not with a majority. "the washington post" poll shows a browser the democrat leading independent david catania by 17 points. formal council carroll schwartz is coming in third. roz plater was there for the debate. she is live in our satellite center. lots of voters are still undecided. do the debate have a clear winner? >> i don't know if there was a clear winner, but it seemed most of the heat was between muriel bowser and david catania. in a normal d.c. election year, the democratic nominee for mayor muriel bowser would have been a shoo-in, but this year is different. facing two viable rivals, both former republicans turned independence. councilmember david catania had formal councilwoman carole schwartz. was relatively tame, but fireworks erupted when bowser brought up an ethics bill she helped craft. >> what she did was assemble 10 bills other people wrote. >> i have to correct that. >> i didn't interrupt you. >> you said something that is not actually factual. >> cheryl schwartz took them both to test. unfortunately, the january 1, 2015 effective date -- that thosethat this election, loopholes are still wide open. at americanditorium university, most were the already converted, but we found a few undecided voters. >> i haven't done too much research. >> some are still looking to hear more details. >> affordable housing, no matter what candidate, what does that mean? answerss didn't get tonight, there are three more mayoral debates before the november 4 general election. prospector, abc 7 news. >> meanwhile, an historic vote as scottish citizens decide whether their land should remain part of the united kingdom or break away form an independent nation. more than 4 million people going to the polls. that is an amazing 97% voter turnout. for the first time, the vote has been extended to 16 and 17-year-olds. exit polls show the no vote with a slight lead at 52%. the results are on paper ballots and will not be expected until friday morning. side ofenate on this the pond tonight has approved president obama's request for the u.s. military to train and equip syrian rebels for a war against isis militants. that comes as new information reveals ices militants extend as far as australia. arrested twoe people and detained 15 others. say the suspects planned to film the beheading of random person in public and rate the body in the ice is flag -- the isis flag. >> we have people planning to conduct random attacks. today, we worked together to make sure that didn't happen. >> australia has joined the u.s.-led coalition against basis, providing advisors and fighter jets. police say they believe at least 60 australians are fighting alongside isis in the middle east. >> new charges filed against a montgomery county tattoo artist. one -- why one woman tells us she couldn't fight back. >> whooping watching abc seven news at 11:00 -- on your side. a 7 on your side health alert for montgomery county where officials are confirming two more cases of whooping cough in public schools. that makes a total of 20 cases and the outbreak began on the first week of classes. the county health department says the new cases involve a student in germantown and a staff member at rocky hill middle school in clarksburg. experts say there is no link between the two cases. on 7, new charges against a montgomery county tattoo artist accused of sexually abusing his clients. two women claim mark matthews touched them inappropriately. in august, one victim told us she was afraid to stop him because matthews had a needle on her skin at the time. since the report, a second victim came forward and told us matthews was so distracted, he damage her tattoo, leading to an infection. matthews has been fired from the parlor where he worked. he is now working at black dragon tattoo parlor in urbana. >> 7 on your side with a consumer alert and bad news about credit card debt in our area. according to credit.com, people who live in this region have some of the highest debt in the country. alaska came in first with an average of about $2200 in debt. slightly lower in virginia where the debt level was at $1800 on average. 6 and 6 plus will go on sale in the morning, and folks are lining up to get theirs. he stopped by the store in georgetown tonight, but that line is nothing compared to one in manhattan.
