'in the last three years, flumist offered little if any protection against the flu in children between the ages of 2 and 17.' by shot, the vaccine was 63 percent effective at preventing the flu. adults ages 18 to 64 have the option of getting the vaccine with a smaller needle that only pierces the skin, which should be less painful than the traditional shot injected into the muscle. and there are new formulations for people 65 and over to consider whose immune system research shows, may not be as responsive as young peoples. stronger than the normal vaccine and another type, fluad, boosts older peoples immune system response. check with your doctor on those. 'when it comes to timing the shot, healthy people under the age of 60 or so can benefit from longer protection by getting the vaccine as soon as it becomes available.' however, the protective effect of the vaccine may wear off faster in older people. so getting the shot a bit later - in early fall - may protect tends to peak. in any case, it takes about two weeks to build up immunity. consumer reports says the most important thing, of course, is to get the flu shot no matter what the timing. the standard vaccine is still free under most insurance plans and now at 8:30.. an update on news from overnight -- milwaukee police are investigating a homicide. it happened in the area of 27th and hope just around one o'clock this morning. police say a the victim is a 20-year- old man. officials found him suffering from a gunshot wound -- he died on scene. the investigation is ongoing. and milwaukee police are investigating another overnight homicide. this one happened in just before three o'clock this morning. police say they found a 32-year-old man suffering a "very serious" gunshot wound -- he later died at the hospital. that investigation is also ongoing. and one person is dead after a crash near 51st and auer -- it happened at midnight. milwaukee police tell us the driver of a dodge neon did not stop at a stop sign and crashed into a car driven by a 58- year-old woman. one of the occupants female in her late 20's -- was ejected from the car. that car struck a light pole that ended up falling on the woman -- she died on scene. the other people in the neon fled the scene on foot... the 58-year-old woman was treated for minor injuries. that investigation also ongoing. and another person is killed in a crash -- this one in kenosha. it happened around 12:30 this morning near 52nd street and 256th avenue -- that's near the town of brighton. we're told it was a single vehicle crash officials are still working on notifying the family. we've got another crisp, fall day ahead, with mostly sunny skies and highs near 60. we'll stay clear tonight and into monday, with lows in the mid to upper 40s. tomorrow will be much warmer, with highs near 70! today: mostly sunny. high: 60 dewpoint: 42 wind: more than two million are without power from florida to the carolinas in the aftermath of hurricane matthew -- while the storm is winding down flooding is still a huge concern. matthew has now been down graded to a post-tropical cyclone. still -- matthew was strong enough to make more than 100 roads impassabl thousands of people and leave a big mess behind. forecasters expect matthew to move off shore this morning. navigating around the storm is still a struggle for many. i spoke with some people who are returning home and say they are just thankful to be able to dodge the storms' path. it slammed into florida, then barreled its way up the east coast, nats hurricane matthew then made landfall in south carolina a category 4 to a category 1, the storm continues to wreak havoc in its path. our hearts out to everyone affected in that area ryan karchner is thankful to have made it out of the south east. on the heels of orlando shutting down, the international airport in charleston south carolina halted all flights as well. we were happy we got here on time a lot of flights were cancelled that leg of the trip would have connected in north carolina and on to and there but it was just heavy rain and wind charlotte was pouring rain and windy we got out there ok, lots of flight cancellation there headed south passengers coming into general mitchell international airport exited with a sigh of relief, thrilled to be here glad to be home after feeling the trickle effects of traveling during storm. for them, it may have been a rocky trip by air, but by land...some traveling to the storm ravaged area are eager to get there. help other people. so that's what i do now," tommy poe is one of two american red cross who deployed from milwaukee friday headed to orlando for two weeks. 29 other are already in different states along the east coast trying to help with longterm relief after a week of disruption and . devastation.
