The Milwaukee County medical Examiners Office is investigating 12 deaths in a 72 hour span. All are likely tied to drug overdoses. Twitter shortly before 9 pm on sunday night. Fox sixs Julie Collins has more. Drug abuse is a problem that has been plaguing communities in southeast wisconsin for years but recently its spiked. It was two weeks ago we first talked to Alderman Michael murphy. Who was reacting to four probable overdose deaths, which had happened in 48 hours. every one of its either a father, a mother, a brother, sister, cousin and that loss of Human Potential has been drastic and terrible for our community and unfortunately its not getting any better. And im fearful that its only going to get worse. this past weekend is proof that it has. The Milwaukee County medical examiner reports that in the past 72 hours, 12 more people have died from a suspected overdose. Less than a week ago, at a roundtable discussion in the area, attorney how he sees best to combat the issue. but above all, from my perspective we need prevention, we have to stop more people from flowing into this problem. through july of this year, 161 people have died from drug overdoses. Thats up 10 percent so far this year, according to the Milwaukee County medical Examiners Office. we have great prevention messages if we can just convince people to use their medications only as theyre prescribed to them, to store them safely and securely in their home, and to get rid of them when the attorney general making that point about prescription drugs. Because they are often considered the gateway to heroin use. The medical Examiners Office told me autopsies for all 12 deaths will be performed over the next 3 days. Thousands of people attending labor fest down at maier Festival Park and the labor day parade in downtown milwaukee. The parade began at zeidler summerfest grounds where labor fest ended just a little while ago. Labor groups say its an opportunity to show unity and pride for their crafts. Milwaukee police say around midnight they tried to stop a chevy avalanche wanted in connection to a homicide last week. After a short pursuit, the truck crashed into another car at 15th and capitol. Two suspects a man and a woman were treated for minor injuries and taken into custody. The driver in the other vehicle was taken to the hospital for nonlife threatening injuries. One man is recovering after an argument leads to morning. Milwaukee police say the man was shot in the knee near 95th and brown deer. He was then taken to his home near heather and brown deer. Emergency crews treated him there before taking him to the hospital. The two nuns murdered in mississippi are being honored with a scholarship.
