more and more people have been stopping me on the street comdemning the violence and the destruction. live in milwaukee myra sanchick fox6 news thanks the waukesha county shef held by sylville smith when he was shot by police was stolen. investigators say it may be the same firearm stolen from a residence in the town of genessee back in march. they are tracing the gun using its serial number. sheriff's officials tell us they do not know if smith stole the gun -- he could have purchased it from someone else. the weekend unrest in milwaukee left a lasting imprint on the people who witnessed it. beverly talor joins us live from sherman park never forget sunday night. why? because he was shot in the neck. nat 18 year old ben olson removes the neck brace he now has to wear after being shot in the neck sunday about 11:30 p.m. near sherman park. this photo shows you what the gauze to sunday night, ben was taking his friend home after leaving the state fair... noticed a lot of people in the sherman park area and they decided to check it out. they walked to sherman and burliegh. 'there was a more rowdy group across the street throwing big bricks and other things at police but we were with the more moderate group. :09 when police moved into position they moved to what they thought was a safer area. 'and then when there were no bricks or anything being thrown i just felt impact out of nowhere. my bodys immediately running backwards my friend immediately covered it up and carried me over to an apartment.shortly after police surrounded them, got ben into an armed vehicle, and transported him to a hospital. the friend called his dad, richard olson . 'it went right passed his artery, right passed it, just to the outside of it. just of the spine. :27 just took a piece off and decided to settle right on top of the spine.' :31 you can physically see and feel where the bullet is lodged. its expected to move even more to the surface and thats when doctors will remove it. needless to say richard is a grateful dad to still have his son. 'as a parent to realized that the boy you love so much could have been gone just like that.' :03 thanks to his dads sound happened in a journal to help him process the shooting. mary thanks bev the unrest in sherman park brings back memories of an even more volatile time in milwaukee for some buildings burned and people were killed during the 1967 riots. fox6's madeline anderson joins us live in the newsroom with a look at what it was like back then. those who lived through and even participated in the 1967 riots say the unrest this week doesn't begin to compare to the anger and destruction the city experienced in the 60s. it was july 30th... 1967... "on a saturday night across the screen came, all milwaukee wildfire across the country. "there were 50 some cities all over the united states that was rioting at the same time. burning, looting. " milwaukee was now up. " mayor maier when he was around, they blamed it on the commandos." tyrone daniels was a member of the naacp commandos. he guarded the marchers that summer protesting housing discrimination guess he didn't have anybody else to blame, the only uniform force at that time in milwaukee was the commandos. " for five days...gunfire rang out... businesses went up in flames... and snipers terrorized the north side. "the national guard used to ride the street in half tracks. 50 caliber machine guns mounted on the half tracks " despite the destruction, shakespeare lewis says the black community's voice needed to be heard. i " was out there like everybody else because i august 3rd... the violence ended. four people had lost their lives... including a police officer. "they were a lot braver than i was. " alderman terry witkowski was a twenty-something-year-old part-time state fair police officer back then. he planned to join the milwaukee police force. "after that weekend, i did not show up for that physical agility test." now 49 years wiser... all three men reflect on what happened in 1967 and what's happening today... i dont approve at all. "this is certainly the worst thing to do if we want more jobs. " i can almost cry. " still to this day... martin luther king drive... where much of the 1967 riot took place.. then called upper third street... still hasn't recovered economically. many buildings are boarded up and lots are vacant. the folks i spoke with are hopeful... sherman park businesses will be able to recover because the damage isn't nearly as extensive. reporting live in the newsroom... ben thanks madeline you can see much more of the footage from the 19-67 riots on our website -- as well as the dramatic scenes unfolding in the sherman park neighborhood over the last week. just go to our website, fox 6 now dot com. the sheboygan falls mother accused of suffocating her child was in court today. police testified today that kaitlin kin-a-tader katlyn kinateder suffocated her 2-year-old son with a plastic bag.the officer says kinateder told her she was "heari killed. according to the criminal complaint -- kinateder confessed to killing the child. she is now bound over for trial. the four men charged with getting away with 20 bucks after killing a woman in a botched robbery, will head to trial. 32-year-old rebecca wood was killed july 13th. wood's body was found, shot, in her car near 28th and clarke. deanthony bradley, william rounds, jeremiah flowers, and anton mukes are charged in connection to wood's death. according to a criminal pointed a gun at her head with his finger on the trigger. bradley told police when the victim tried to drive away the gun went off-- killing her. they all entered not guilty pleas, and are due back in court at the end of the month. we're learning more about a fatal, hit- and-run crash, in milwaukee, tuesday evening. today, justin williams spoke to the victim's mother. he is live, near 23rd and fond du lac, with the latest. justin? her mother says tuesday marks the s been hit by a car. the first, years ago, in chicago, did not require hospitalization. the second, tuesday evening, in milwaukee, resulted in bunch's death. you took a daughter. you took a sister. you took a aunt. tasha bunch does not know to whom she is speaking, i haven't been asleep. i been up, since last night. but she is absolutely certain what she wants them to do. just thinkin', hopin' -- prayin' that you guys discusses the death of her daughter, 22-year-old tyann bunch, who is killed, around 7 p-m, tuesday night, after being struck by a car, near the intersection of milwaukee's 23rd and fond du lac. she wanted to hurry-up, and cross the street, but her girlfriend stated that she seen a car comin', 'n' she told her that that wasn't a good idea, and she told her that she 'got this'--that they could cross the street, and my daughter ended-up gettin' struck. the striking vehicle, according to block away from the scene where at least one man runs away. it's like a strip, a drag strip, you know, for auto racers. kevin thomas' crash scene concerns continue, as he describes the dangers plaguing pedestrians. they get side-by-side, on this, particular, strip, and then they just speed down here--with no regards of traffic, life, or anything. meanwhile, she be tellin' me she love me, she appreciate me, i got her back. facebook, saying she don't know what to do, if she lost her mom ... that was on the tenth ... a witness says tyann was in a crosswalk, when she was struck. police say the suspect vehicle is a 1999 cadillac deville -- adding that neither the license plate, nor the vin number, found on, and in, the car are listed to that vehicle -- so, stolen. as this investigation continues, here, in milwaukee, i'm justin williams, fox 6 news. mary thanks justin presidential candidates continue their focus on wisconsin -- despite the polls heavily favoring hillary clinton. so why keep coming back -- if the state seems like a done deal? we asked a political expert to give us the inside analysis of what's really going parties' tickets are campaigning here, you'd think wisconsin must be a state up for grabs. "wisconsin is really important i've been here twice since i was added to the ticket and that's because wisconsin is a critical place for us to win." democratic v-p nominee tim kaine stopped in madison tuesday, while republican presidential nominee donald trump rallied in west bend. "i am asking for your vote on november 8th so i can be your champion in the campaign stops, the most recent marquette law school poll paints a picture not of a state up for grabs.....but of one in which hillary clinton leads donald trump by 15 points amongst likely voters. "trump wants to create multiple scenarios for getting to 270 electoral college votes because he doesn't want a kind of all or nothing bet on ohio or pennsylvania." according to uwm professor mordecai lee, even though clinton has a thinks the trump campaign views wisconsin as winnable if they can mobilize the party's base in the state's rural and conservative counties. "one could superficially say hey wisconsin in presidential elections has gone democratic ever since ronald reagan ran for reelection but that's really missing the statistics of how close some of the elections were." he also says winning wisconsin could help trump make up for a loss in a larger electoral state. "we transfer about 10 percent of our patients each day to a hospital, that requires a higher level of care" that shouldn't be necessary for cramer.
