"the living conditions were reported to not be too safe." police were called here to check on an elderly woman, but arrived hoarding situation. "the 85-year-old lady took in some stray cats and as a result of all these cats being in the house, there was some cat feces and mold growing in the house." 3 cats were found dead. 7 alive. police believe other strays may have been living there at some point. the animals were handed over to the wisconsin humane society. "we believe the case in mt. pleasant is a hoarding situation due to the volume of cats inside the home." for most of the morning and afternoon-- streets were blocked as first responders looked the quality of the air inside the home and say it is uninhabitable. " a lot of cats were in the house and as a result that produced an unsafe environment." the home will now sit empty off this quiet street— until the condition there improves. "its just not safe to live in at this point until things get cleaned up inside the house." ashley says: police say the home had no working plumbing and the electricity was partially functioning. the woman living in the home is ok and is staying with f will be filed. in mount pleasant, ashley sears fox 6 news. tonight we're learning more about the two-dozen dogs seized from rescue operation in racine earlier this month. all but two of them will be returned. the dogs were seized from a "lucky mutts" rescue home. they were found living in small cages -- and in filthy conditions. the 24 animals seized are being cared for by the humane society won't give up custody -- and they want them back. 33-year-old "heather jensen" runs this particular rescue. both she and her boyfriend "terry bogard" are charged with 26 counts of animal mistreatment in the case. two people are injured after a hit- and- run in racine county. and now police have some new clues --- as they search for the driver responsible. fox six's stephanie grady joins us in the studio with more. the incident happened early this morning in mount pleasant - police say the two men were walking down the median when they stepped off-- trying to flag someone down -- and that's when they were struck. the vehicle fled the scene -- but it was later found in a kenosha parking lot. it had heavy damage to the windshield and the driver's side. police say the investigation has been difficult -- because the people that were hit -- were intoxicated. certainly, you know, alcohol was a factor. i dont know what level of intoxication they were, but the officers at the scene said they had trouble getting the scene for false reports of a gunshot victim. we were hearing that police planned to release more information on the case tonight. if there are any developments overnight -- we'll be sure to have them on fox six wakeup news starting at 4:30. back to you. attorneys call it a victory for a transgender teenager from kenosha. today a federal judge ruled his school district must allow him to us 16-year-old ash whitaker was born a female...but realized at a young age that he identified as a male. school administrators insisted that whitaker use the women's restrooms or private facilities, separate from the school's other students. the transgender law center filed a lawsuit on his behalf. today the judge granted a preliminary injunction-- allowing whitaker to use the bathroom he wants. seeing results! marquette university says crime on and around campus has gone way down! very big change. ben handelman is live on marquette's campus tonight. good evening. that change--- building a fully commissioned police department. the switch happened over a year ago. the university says they are seeing big results. abby snell-- as a female i feel safe. and tadhg scully say at marquette univeristy-- again, never felt unsafe on campus. theyve never experienced crim growing number of their classmates can say the same thing. i think what it goes to show is marquettes campus is safe. marquette police have released new crime statistics showing huge drops compared to the previous year. robberies-- cut almost in half 42% battery and assaults-- decreased by over 60 percent 62% .burglaries are down nearly a quarter 23% .the biggest change? were really starting to see the impact that this big step of marquette's police department is just over a year old. once security officers made the switch to fully commissioned and trained police officers in 2015. we can handle things from beginning to end. were able to make arrests now. we can process those on campus, rather than call the milwaukee police department. chief paul mascari says his department is more efficient. students say they've noticed the changes. i think it added another layer of safety to it. including less crime alerts in their email. i have been getting less of those. leavig worry about how to relax in-between classes. there are 40 officers on the force here at marquette, and they patrol areas just off campus as well. they say this isn't just helping campus, but the entire neighborhood. live at marquette, ben handelman, fox 6 news. facing charges -- for stealing thousands of dollars worth of perfumes and fragrances from the menomonee falls j-c penny store. 40-year-old "markell baker" reportedly was part of a cleaning crew that was contracted to work at the store. prosecutors say baker would take about a dozen fragrances every other day he worked. that allegedly went on for six months! the goods would then later be sold at beauty salons and barber shops dry today -- but tomorrow -- we might not be that lucky. weather expert tom wachs joins us now from the weather deck. get ready for more rain on wednesday. i'll have your fox6 forecast coming up. coming up-- a local athlete returns from the rio her. plus-- an 11-year-old boy awarded by the american red cross. the life he saved to new tonight -- a grand homecoming for a local gold medalist.
