Provided an update. There are a total of 17 arrests last night, most were disorderly conduct, most for burglary. Several swap cars were vandalized. Six businesses were destroyed by fire. They have been treated and released from hospitals. The National Guard has been activated and is on standby. Milwaukee mayor says this continues to be a volatile si we do not know what is going to happen if we have a flareup tonight like we had last night. If you love your son and you love your daughter, you love your grandchild, tell them to stay away from this area, stay away from this area. Joyce the police chief will make the call whether or not the National Guard will be diploid. The chief also spoke at the briefing this afternoon. More about the Police Shooting that sparked the unrest. Colleen they were here this afternoon. The chief, the mayor and the Council President and they offered to details about the officer and the suspect involved in yesterday shooting. That still photo demonstrates without question that he had a gun in his hand. Colleen reporters he saw a still photo taken from the body camera of the officer. The 23yearold was armed. I want our community to know that. He had a gun in his hand. Colleen the chief says he pulled the suspect over because he was in a suspicious car. The officer got out of his squad car, the suspect running from his car and was cornered. It was very fast. The individual to turn to the officer with a firearm in his hand. You cannot tell when the officer discharges because the body cameras, there is a 32nd delay before the audio takes on. Kicks on. Colleen the officer involved is now the target of a threat. He happens to be africanamerican. He is a very active officer. He has been staying with relatives. Colleen the chief says that the suspect had more ammunition than the officer confronted. 23 rounds, and we are also told by the chief of the suspect had a lengthy metal record, an arrest record but we did check Court Records and they indicate several of those cases that he dismissed. Mike i did speak with him. I also spoke with a lot of other people out here right next to the bp gas station. This is one of the businesses that burned overnight. We saw a lot of people including some starting to scatter and leave that they were before Holding Hands across the street and holding a vigil. There are many people at the park throughout the day praying and we ran into the father of the suspect this afternoon. His name is Patrick Smith and he is the father of smith shot by police. We caught up with them as he walked among the people that were here praying and holding the vigil, condemning the burnings last night. He told us his son was surrounded a culture that glorifies guns and that might have led up to what happened. Models, this is what you get. Mike he also said that his son did not have good role models in his life and he counted himself epic Police Presence at the bp station. Mike when we first rolled up this morning, the first thing we saw was people out here picking up trash and cleaning of course, people had a lot of things on their mind that they wanted to say, some condemning the burning of this gas station because it is where they gassed up. A woman said she comes are often come her grandkids, kids coming here to buy their snacks and now they have no place to go. We heard the same about the other buildings that were burned in the neighborhood out here. I felt an aura of sadness out violent talk or anything like that. These were people that live in this neighborhood, sherman park, living near for a while and they know that their homes are here, families of vigor, good homes, good people and they do not want this kind of stuff in the neighborhood. That is what they were out here saying today and that is what we heard from everyone that was out here today. Kathy thank you. That was one of six businesses damaged or destroyed by fire. The governor stressed repeatedly this move is just a precaution in the event of more escalating violence, the kind that we saw here last night. What you see behind me right now is the prayer group. A lot of folks gathered around, Holding Hands and singing, very different scene that played out during the overnight hours. That is the reason some of the this morning come a last night that the governor is putting the National Guard in place. The guard members will not be mobilized unless they are absolutely needed. We have received several hours of training in terms of rules and engagement and what is the specific time to be called upon. Kent Governor Walker spelled out the plan for 125 members of the National Guard 32nd military Police Company to put them on standby, close by if violence in the city once again gets out of control. He said theres a reason he is acting quickly. Would escalate, and what more would need to be done, not just last night that the coming days. Sadly, we have seen it elsewhere around the country in my sense in states with the governors waited too long, it escalates. Our hope is that we deescalate.
