radar. showers and storms to our northwest, fond du lac county in the metro county at the moment. the dew point is at 63 degrees, so we will see little drop, but we will have a little warm humid afternoon ahead of us. some thunderstorms tonight. weekend forecast is coming up. melinda: sounds good. when you're on the go, take the weather watch 12 forecast with you. just download the wisn 12 news app. it's free for your smartphone or tablet. >> breaking news this morning. one man is in the hospital after a shooting in downtown milwaukee. police say a 34-year-old man was shot on the street near old world third and wells. kilbourn where he flagged down an officer. he is expected to survive. police say the suspect ran from the scene. this is near the hyatt regency hotel, representatives say they have locked their doors, to make sure guests stay safe. ben: right now, searching for information on what led up to a fatal shooting right outside the doors of a police station. police say two men got into an argument outside of district six headquarters near 27th and oklahoma. one man reportedly shot and killed the other. it's not clear if they knew each other. police say the suspect then walked into district six, told officers about the shooting and handed over the gun. melinda: now, continued coverage of the unrest in milwaukee. people in sherman park are working to pick up the pieces. tim, what's next? tim: right now, crews are working to demolish the businesses that were burned during the unrest. here's the scene on saturday when fires broke out at eight businesses near sherman and most damage, it burned to the ground. yesterday we saw atf agents sifting through the rubble for evidence. crews are working to clear the damage from the gas station lot and an o'reilly auto parts that was badly damaged. the demolition will also help investigators collect key evidence about how those fires started. ben: people from across milwaukee, coming together, after the unrest over the weekend. last night, hundreds of people gathered for a prayer vigil. the milwaukee archdiocese organized the service to pray for peace in the city. in the lindsey heights neighborhood, a march for peace. about 50 people participated. organizers planned this walk before the violence began in sherman park. and a group of chaplains, trained for crisis situations are offering counseling to the family of sylville smith killed in a police shooting and to hundreds of other people in milwaukee. they traveled from north melinda: two attorneys who were part of the making a murderer trial are speaking on the criminal justice system, later today. dean strang and jerry buting are taking part in a panel discussion on challenges facing the justice system. it's part of forwardfest, happening today in madison. strang and buting were defense attorneys for steven avery. the murder trial was documented in netflix's smash hit series making a murderer. ben: later today, helping your kids stay healthy when they head back to school. milwaukee is holding itsst back-to-school health fair of the year. the fair runs from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at north division high school. there will be vaccinations, lead testing, vision and dental screenings, along with haircuts for students. kids can also get free backpacks and school supplies. melinda: later today, the city of brookfield is working to keep mosquitoes away. mosquitoes from breeding. a helicopter will drop pellets over the land this morning. the city is asking people to avoid wirth park while that's going on, but it's safe to visit the park once the treatment has been dropped. ben: new from overnight, did you see storms in the distance last night? this is a time lapse, taken here at wisn 12 news, looking west. lightning lit up the sky late last night as storms hit southwest of milwaukee. still ahead a town goes low-tech to keep their lawn tidy. melinda: why sheep make the perfect lawnmowers for this town in illinois. ben: and a family, hurt when lightning strikes. what the lightning hit, that's causing serious issues for them. melinda: but first, let's take a live look outside as we head to break. it is clear in downtown milwaukee. jeremy will tell us when we can jeremy: thank you for joining moment. we're watching the radar. a handful of showers out there right now. a little bit of rain. you could run the wipers a couple of times if you are traveling in the next 20 minutes or so. thunderstorms off to our northwest. closer to the stateline looking drive. it is still humid outside. we have a temperature of 77 degrees in milwaukee. your forecast looks like this. means all day rain, we will have partly sunny skies this afternoon. there is a huge change in your week from forecast we will up yet, a few cars. 13 minutes on 45 southbound to the zoo. ben: a traffic alert, this weekend i-94 will be closed at the zoo interchange. it shuts down at 11:00 tonight and reopens early sunday morning. the ramps from 894 and 41 are closing, too. crews will be installing tub gis project. greenfield avenue is the suggested detour. a texas family falls victim to a lightning strike, on their patio. melinda: they were unloading groceries when lightning hit their car, and bounced onto them. the video is a little choppy but you can see the lightning bolt and then the family ends up on the ground. they're all ok, just some minor burns. the car, though, is fried. let's get right to tim elliott in the newsroom. ben: he's following some big california. the blue cut fire burning red hot the trail of damage left behind and the progress firefighters have made, as they try to get the flames under control. plus, is lochte a liar? why police in brazil say the olympian and several of his teammates were not victims of a robbery, but instead, they're suspects. i'm hall of famer jerry west and my life is basketball. but that doesn't stop my afib from leaving me at a higher risk of stroke. until i learned more about once-daily xarelto... a latest generation blood thinner. then i made the switch. xarelto? is selective targeting one critical factor of your body's natural clotting function. for people with afib currently well managed on warfarin, there is limited information on how xarelto and warfarin compare like all blood thinners, don't stop taking xarelto without talking to your doctor, as this may increase your risk of a blood clot or stroke. while taking you may bruise more easily, and it may take longer for bleeding to stop. xarelto may increase your risk of bleeding if you take certain medicines. xarelto can cause serious, and in rare cases fatal bleeding. get help right away for unexpected bleeding, unusual bruising or tingling. if you have had spinal anesthesia while on xarelto watch for back pain or abnormal bleeding. tell your doctor before all planned medical or dental procedures. before starting xarelto tell your doctor about any conditions, such as kidney, liver or bleeding problems. to help protect yourself from a stroke, ask your doctor about xarelto. there's more to know. >> you're watching wisn 12 news this morning. ben: welcome back. it is friday, august 19. you may not need your ball all day. jeremy: some places could see a shower or thunderstorm. the bulk of the rain world be this morning -- will be this morning in central wisconsin pushing east. a couple of later showers in the southeastern part of the state. today. rain and much cooler temperatures. melinda: thank you. right now, wildfires are scorching california. here's wisn 12 news' tim elliott, with details on one of the largest buyers out there. tim: it's called the blue cut fire, and since tuesday it's burned more than 35,000 acres. it's burning near san bernardino. some mandatory evacuations are still in place, others have been lifted. officials estimate that nearly 83,000 people were ordered to evacuate. more than 1500 firefighters have been working to contain the fire. as of last night, the blue cut fire is about 22% contained. california's governor has issued a state of emergency for the county. it's still not clear what started this fire. ben: an update on the orlando nightclub shooting, doctors say the last victim who remains in the hospital has improved slightly. condition since the shooting on june 12. now, that person's condition is one step up, at guarded. the name of the patient has not been released. 49 people were killed in the shooting and more than 50 others were hurt. melinda: right now, people in louisiana are struggling to clean up after devastating floods. the water is still high in some areas. around 40,000 homes have been damaged. but as neighborhoods start to dry out, the water is entering lakes which are rising. near baton rouge, one lake is in danger of rising so much that it ul ben: the red cross expects the flooding in louisiana to be its largest and most costly disaster response since superstorm sandy in 2012. the storms impacted more than 75,000 people in louisiana. many who lost their houses are now turning to red cross shelters. but that requires manpower and costs a lot of money. i talked to the head of the red cross, to find out how you can help. in louisiana. what can we do to help out? >> first of all, we can always use volunteers. i just met a brand-new volunteer from your state. she's very excited to be part of this deployment. we really could use some financial support as well. ben: you can call to donate the laura -- you can also text la-floods to 90999 to make a $10 dollar donation. there's more information on the red cross website. melinda: also new this morning, dozens of red cross workers from here in wisconsin are in louisiana helping flooding victims. red cross equipment, like disaster relief vans, are making their job easier. local people have donated shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, and more necessities along with giving their time. deploying to go places. right now we have almost 40 volunteers in louisiana, we're just starting to mobilize for california. melinda: workers in california will help people affected by wildfires there. again, if you want to help people in either place, you can donate to the red cross online, and over the phone. a town in illinois is getting creative with their lawn-care. their lawns they let these sheep roam. they eat grass and weeds in the town of waterloo. it's better for the budget, and the environment. the mayor says they've been using the sheep for about 20 years. ben: this is a bunch of guys who did not want to cut the grass and said she would work. melinda: i love that. they are cute. jeremy: they are having a lot have not had any rain to get the grass growing our area. we hope to get some rain over the next 36 hours. not much in milwaukee so far. most of the pavement is dry at this hour. over the next three to four hours, the best chance to see isolated thunder storm or shower. the dew point will be 65 degrees to 70 degrees. here is your checklist or it still plenty of fires and festivals going on. a drastic change in your forecast, just wait until you see the seven-day. doppler 12 radar right now, michigan. sprinkles and light showers in the a torrential downpour. those thunderstorms may pull together in dodge or fond du lac county. 77 degrees in milwaukee. 60 it's in the northwoods. not until saturday into sunday with temperatures storing into the 90's today. keep a plan be ready to go. a good bet to have outdoor event scheduled, but have the umbrella ready to go. thunderstorms. 73, cooler and less humid. ben: we are in traffic watch 12. looking great so far as we are heading out the door. melinda: thank you. a mystery unfolding in rio de janeiro, involving olympic jim, this has been talked about a lot. what are we learning about this alleged crime? tim: this is a big scandal. four swimmers, including ryan lochte, claimed they had been robbed at gunpoint. now police say the athletes were drunk and vandalized a gas station. then made up the robbery as a cover story. believed they were being robbed because security guards held them at gunpoint and wouldn't let them leave until they paid for the damage. this morning, two of the swimmers are on their way home, after being detained in brazil. lochte is already in the u.s.. ben: time now to check in on the medal count, and see how the u.s. stacks up. this morning, america has earned 100 medals. 35 of those are gold, 33 silver, and 32 bronze. china comes in second with a total of 58 medals including 20 gold. and great britain is third in line with 22 gold medals, and a total of 56. melinda: the olympics wrap up this weekend in rio and watching the world's top athletes has pushed people around the world to get active. but the people in rio didn't need the olympics to get inspired. deirdre fitzpatrick is at olympic park where the locals are as inspiring as the olympians. >> get ready to feel like a working out and the world's top athletes are impressed. if there's one thing you can say about the olympic host city brazilians don't suffer from a lack of confidence do they?
